BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State volleyball played a spirited and energetic home opener against Chowan University, but the Hawks were too strong, downing the Lady Bulldogs in straight sets, 15-25, 15-25 and 17-25. The setback spoiled the home opener for the Lady Bulldogs and set the team record at 1-11 overall, 1-4 CIAA and 0-2 in the North.
Sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) led the home team with six kills on 20 attacks while freshman Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) and sophomore Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) added four kills apiece for the Lady Bulldogs.
Bowie State sophomore Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) contributed three kills and sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) supplied a pair of kills in the loss. Archer-Simpson was also responsible for 13 of Bowie State’s 14 assists. Redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with eight digs and three service aces, all team highs.
Chowan’s Hawks (8-3, 5-0, 2-0) were led by Melanie Chaussee (Lawrence Kan.) and Jordan Miller (Elizabeth City, .NC.) with 10 kills each. Cindy Ehrich (Fredericksburg, Va.) tallied a team-high eight digs for the Hawks and Allison Smith (Manassas, Va.) recorded a match-high 28 assists.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the court on Monday (September 22nd), when Bowie State plays host to Elizabeth City State at 7 pm in BSU’s A.C. Jordan Arena.
