Bowie State Men's Basketball Conquer Elizabeth City State 69-67
In the first of two regular-season meetings, Bowie State defeated conference foe Elizabeth City State University on Greek Night by a final score of 69-67.
Senior Juwan Smith
(Lexington Park, Md.) has been pouring it in on the offensive end
during the team's three-game homestand, and he continued his tear
tonight with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the field off the
Bulldogs' bench.
"He's been aggressive, and that's what we talked about. "I felt like I was bogging him down and I said 'you know what I just want you to go play and make plays, shoot the ball if you're open and he's been doing exactly that," Head coach Darrell Brooks said.
This game went back and forth as the score remained close throughout the entire contest. Things didn't get really interesting until late in the second half. At the 7:47 mark, senior David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) converted on a layup to put Bowie State up by six, until ECSU's Justin Faison answered back with a three-pointer to cut the lead down to three.
Belle would score another layup at the 5:50 mark and make his free throw to complete the and-one, but the Vikings would counter with a slam dunk by Joseph Allen. Seniors Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) would score by a tip-in, and Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) would knock down a jumper, to push Bowie State's lead to eight with four minutes left. With the crowd in a frenzy, Elizabeth State answered with a 3-pointer by Gabe Kirkendoll to make it a five-point game.
With 49 seconds left and Bowie State up three points, ECSU's Faison scored on a layup to make it a one-point game as Vikings head coach Shawn Walker quickly called a timeout. Belle would knock down a pair of free throws as the Vikings quickly fouled and relied on last possession to tie the game until Faison was called for a double-dribble violation, which put the game to rest.
Besides Smith, Belle also led Bowie State with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Hayes chipped in eight points, and Jamison contributed six points. As a team, Bowie State shot 56 percent (26-of-46) from the field, 66 percent (6-of-9) from long-distance and made 79 percent (11-of-14) of its free throws.
Faison led four Elizabeth City State players in double figure scoring with 18 points while Kirkendoll and Joseph Allen tallied 17 and 16 points respectively. Shykeef Daniels rounded the Vikings' double figure scorers with a dozen points.
On Monday (2/10), the Bulldogs will begin a three-game conference road trip beginning at Virginia State University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in VSU's Multipurpose Center.

Big First Half Leads Bowie State Bulldog Women’s to 76-40 Win Over Elizabeth City State
BOWIE, Md. –
Senior Kyaja
Williams (Baltimore, Md.) was impressive on the court tonight recording
another double-double and ended with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go
along with seven steals while junior Talanya
Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) recorded a double-double herself scoring 18
points, tying her career-high and grabbed a career-high 10 boards.
Senior Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) chipped in 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Bowie State moves to 19-3 overall, 9-2 in league play and 3-1 in the CIAA North. ECSU dips to 8-15 (4-7 CIAA) on the year.
The Bulldogs took the win behind a great overall performance as a team. As a team, BSU shot a scorching hot 50.8 percent
(32-of-63) from the floor while holding the Lady Vikings to shooting just 25 percent (14-of-56).
Bowie
State took over the game early with a big first half and never looked
back. The Lady Vikings scored the first
basket of the night but were shut down by the Bulldogs defense after
that until the 4:10 mark of the first period. While holding ECSU with
one field goal, the Bulldogs went on a 15-5 run orchestrated by Williams
and Hutton. A Hutton layup with one minute left
gave BSU 24-7 lead to end the quarter.
Although
the Lady Vikings held their own in the second stanza by scoring 10
points, the Bulldogs were the superior
team. BSU held 30-20 advantage in points in the paint and scored 27
points off turnovers to ECSU nine. Williams’ back-to-back layups gave
Bowie State 36-11 lead at the 4:05 mark. Senior Lea Whitehead (Odenton,
Md.) jumper closed out the first half with the
Bulldogs on top 40-17.
Senior
Amel Duggins (Largo, Md.) started out the third period with a pair of
three pointers to extend the Bowie State
lead to 46-17 with 8:33 remaining. The Lady Vikings offensive woes
continued in the quarter as the visitors scored only five points
compared to 26 points for Bulldogs. Another Williams layup with seven
seconds to go stretched the lead to 66-22 entering the
fourth quarter.
ECSU outscored BSU in the fourth period 18-10 but it was a little too late as the Bulldogs dominated the first three
quarters by a large margin to pick up their third straight win.
Deal
and Sirenna Pitts led the Elizabeth City State Vikings in scoring with
11 points apiece. Devona Stell came off the Lady Vikings bench to haul
down a team-high 11 rebounds
Bowie State travels south for its next contest at Virginia State University on Monday (2/10) in Ettrick, Va. Tipoff
is slated for 5:30 p.m. in VSU’s Multipurpose Center.
