A NYC Chiropractor Explains Nutrition Response Testing

Before finding out how a NYC chiropractor explains Nutrition Response Testing, you first need to understand the fundamentals of chiropractics. This is an alternative health care practice that concentrates on holistic healing methods with emphasis on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

Common ailments addressed by chiropractic doctors are neck pain, lower back pain, herniated discs, sports injuries, herniated discs, and pinched nerves. As part of holistic healing, chiropractors will also analyze the patient's nutrition imbalances and lifestyle. A lot of people neglect correct nutrition because of the stress and strains of day-to-day life.

In order for the human body to function at its peak, it needs to be fed the right foods. Many of us think we are eating correctly when, in fact, we are not. Even if we eat healthy foods, we may not be getting the balance right. This can cause symptoms of a nutritional imbalance.

These may include migraines or other headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, heart problems, stress, weight gain, and others. Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) is the non-invasive way to determine if there is a dietary imbalance. When this has been established, a chiropractor is able to devise an eating plan that includes certain supplements.

Nutrition Response Testing is a relatively new program that is able to detect problems in the body's natural 'computer.' The information is obtained through muscle testing, neurological reflex testing, and acupuncture points. It is essentially a descendant of Applied Kinesiology - a method of diagnosis used by alternative health care practitioners like homeopaths, chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncturists, as well as medical doctors.

The basic premise is that the body operates through a network of chemical and electric signals. They are sent from and to the brain by the nervous system and the spinal cord. All organs are controlled by the brain and the nervous system. Furthermore, every muscle is controlled by, and connected to, the nervous system.

If something interferes with these electrical messages, the muscles can become weak. NRT involves many of the testing principles of Applied Kinesiology, but the system of diagnosis is different. An underlying principle of Nutrition Response Testing is that many symptoms are caused by an imbalance. When the imbalance is addressed properly, the body's computer can work correctly and clear up the symptom.

Let's say the chiropractor detects active reflexes in the liver or kidneys. With his or her comprehensive knowledge about nutrition, the patient can be given an individualistic dietary plan to follow. This will include specific supplements. When the balance is corrected, the reflexes will become strong and the kidneys or liver are able to work properly, thereby improving health.

When NRT is administered, there are numerous medical problems that can benefit. Some typical ones are food allergies, fungal infections, parasite infestations, weak immune systems, fatigue (extreme, severe and chronic), abdominal pain, a range of digestive problems, and skin rashes. NRT can be defined as a way of restoring the proper flow of energy by implementing a nutritional plan after studying certain parts of the body. I’m so proud of today’s incredible transformation Rachel! In June 2015, at 50 years of age, Rachel realized that she wasn’t happy with where she was physically when she saw a picture of herself with friends. She knew she was ready for change, especially since she was preparing for her upcoming wedding (February 2016). Rachel’s Story:

“We all have that “Ah Ha” moment. Mine came last June, when I was photographed with some friends in town for a music event. My typical “trick” of sandwiching myself in the middle of the crowd and turning sideways to cover half my body didn’t work this time. What I had known to be true was staring me right in the face. All the recent wardrobe “updates” were really a disguise to compensate for the fact my clothes weren’t fitting anymore and I had to buy new ones.

A few weeks later, a co-worker and I were talking about upcoming trips—both about six months out. Hers was a romantic getaway, mine was destination wedding/honeymoon. She said, “Hey, have you heard about Hitch Fit? Let’s do it together.” No, I hadn’t heard about Hitch Fit, but I wasn’t going on my honeymoon looking like I did in the June picture, so I said yes.

Understand, I have never been a disciplined person in my life. I am not an athlete, and the only time I’ve been on a sports team was in grade school when my parents signed my sisters and me up to play summer softball. My sisters and I have a joke, when friends ask what position we played. (Mostly because they’re shocked we were even allowed to participate.) My sister, Rebekah always replies, “ They stuck us in the outfield, and we mostly hung out and made dandelion necklaces and bracelets.”

So there was nothing in my background that would even suggest I would be successful on this program, any program for that matter. BUT, what I do respond well to is encouragement, positive energy, and accountability. I found all that at Hitch Fit.

Initially my co-worker and I were going to sign-up for the online program. Both Micah and Diana were ON IT when it came to answering our million and one questions we had, before we even officially signed up. I decided to also have a personal trainer at the Overland Park, KS Hitch Fit Gym location, for two reasons:

  1. I didn’t even know how to use gym equipment, so needed instruction.
  2. I needed the weekly weigh-in / measurements to stay on track.
I signed up, completed a questionnaire, and a few days later received my customized meal plan. The instructions with the email suggested printing out the information and keeping it in a binder. Okay, maybe this was a serious thing. I mean, a binder? I thought I was going to just get a quick summary, and away I would go!

When asking about a Hitch Fit personal trainer, Diana asked me if I had a preference, male or female. I told her I was 50 and didn’t want someone yelling at me. Honestly, after spending time around many of the trainers, she could have matched me with any one of them, and I would have been comfortable. Every week when I would arrive for my session, each one of them would look up, smile, say hi or bye at some point during my hour. Talk about a company culture that breathes the same air/ has the same philosophy!

There is no quick fix in a transformation. Hitch Fit is about day by day, doing the activities to get you there. It’s a journey. And there is nothing like looking at my pictures from my first in-person consultation with my trainer, Eric Reynolds (shout –out!), to jump start that journey. If I thought the June pictures were bad, looking at my body at that first session confirmed it was time.

Here are my take-ways for anyone thinking about making a change:

  1. You will not likely see quick changes. I could ‘starve’ myself over a weekend, and lose more weight than I did in my first two weeks on the program. BUT, each day of doing to right activities, builds over time, and the changes (both weight and body fat) become evident. Additionally, these activities eventually become your lifestyle, not just a diet.
  1. The meal prep and eating according to the timeline is like a part-time job. You have to take it seriously. You have to prepare.
  1. It is likely you will struggle the first few weeks, getting everything down.( meal prep, exercise, drinking enough water, etc) Do not get discouraged! You’re making a major change to your life/ your routine. If it were easy, everyone would naturally know how to do it, and there would be no need for Hitch Fit.
  1. Don’t just look at the number on the scale. The body fat changes are so important!
  1. Be prepared for negative comments as people notice the changes you’re making in your food choices / your lifestyle changes. I can say 100% of my family members and close friends were positive and encouraging, but the same wasn’t true with a few co-workers. I had one tell me not to loose too much weight because it would make me look older. I had another criticize me for not having a piece of cake at an office celebration. All the comments both positive and negative were a reminder that even when I couldn’t see the changes, others could.
When you’re ready, make an investment in you, it will make you a happier, healthier person.”

Where's The Fat?

Exercise Combined With Diet Cuts Bodyfat, But From Where? Do you lose more weight by cutting calories than you do by exercising more? Recent evidence slightly tips the scales toward exercising. A study in December's Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise followed 26 formerly-sedentary women for 13 weeks. One group of women cycled for a half-hour once or twice a week while cutting 200 calories a day from their diet. Another cycled three to four times a week while eating the same as usual. And a third made no changes. Not surprisingly, the third group lost no fat. But both exercise groups lost similar amounts of visceral fat--deep, hard fat that shapes the typical beer belly. Visceral fat has been associated with heart disease and diabetes. The three-or-four-times-a-week exercise group, however, lost more subcutaneous fat--the kind that lays just beneath the skin, primarily in your arms and legs. Though not harmful, subcutaneous fat makes you look flabby.


WHAT'S YOUR BODY SHAPE? Waist-to-Hip Ratio Tells Where The Fat's At You're not as slim as you'd like to be. But you've never really thought of yourself as being overweight either. So when you read about the benefits of maintaining a "healthy weight," you wonder where you fit in--is your weight OK, or is it putting your health at risk? A simple do-it-yourself evaluation reported in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter can give you an idea of what shape your shape is in, and if you might benefit from shedding a few pounds. The waist-to-hip ratio indicates where most of your fat is located. People who carry most of their weight around their waists are often referred to as "apples." Those who carry most of their weight below their waist--around the hips and thighs--are often referred to as "pears." Generally, it's better to have a pear shape than an apple shape. That's because fat around the waist is associated with an increased risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. Fat around your hips and thighs is considered less of a health risk.
To find out what shape you are, measure your hips at their widest point and your waist at its narrowest (usually at the navel, but this may vary). Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A ratio greater than .80 for a woman and greater than 1.0 for a man indicates an apple shape.
TURN OFF THAT TV! Get Your Kids Up Off The Couch, Excessive TV Watching Is Making Them Fat Knowing that the overweight children of today are likely to become the overweight adults of tomorrow mandates that you pay careful attention to your child's diet, exercise and lifestyle habits. A study reported in a recent issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association reports on dated collected from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which measured the amount of physical activity and television watching among 4,000 children in U.S. households and the relationship to their Body Mass Index (BMI) and percent bodyfat. Overall, approximately 20% of the children reported fewer than three exercise sessions per week (which was even higher among girls); whereas 26% of the children watched more than four hours of television per day. Yes, per day! Not surprisingly, the increased television watching was associated with increased BMI and total bodyfat levels. The authors concluded that increased television watching was associated with the increasing prevalence of overweight children inthe U.S., and that children were increasingly participating in sedentary-leisure activities, such as playing video games, watching television and using computers, and that this trend was more than coincidental. As parents you need to encourage your children to participate in regular exercise, particularly activities that they can engage in for the rest of their lives. Good examples are running, cycling, weight training, soccer, bodybuilding, basketball, swimming and skiing. If we do not stop this trend, the health care crisis will continue to grow to bigger and bigger proportions in this country.

Feature Exercise

Barbell Front Lunge


Place the bar across your shoulders and trapezius muscles. Step forward 2.5 to 3.5 feet and drop straight down. Try to keep your forward knee above your foot as you lower your body down as far as is comfortable to you, or until your front thigh is parallel to the ground. If your knee moves out in front of your foot you will increase the stimulus to the frontal quadriceps muscles of your leg, but you will also greatly increase the stress to your knee joint. Maintain good posture throughout the lift. Exhale as your push off the front leg and return to the starting position. This is an excellent exercise for developing the muscles in your buttocks and thigh area.
