Experts Warn: Ease Into Hot Weather Workouts


Okay Athletes and Warriors! The weather is warming up in most parts of the globe, and even though that's a great time to amp up your workouts, be sure to take all safety into consideration before you do.

Experts Warn: Ease Into Hot Weather Workouts
WASHINGTON (AP)--For couch potatoes who begin an exercise program when it's hot, even working up a sweat takes practice.

The practice is called acclimatization. It's the process of getting your body used to the special demands of hot weather. "You don't sweat as much until you are acclimated," said Dr. Janice Zimmerman, director of the medical emergency center at Ben Taub General Hospital and an associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Beginners should not feel alone in this. Even trained athletes who plunge into working out in hot weather could benefit from time to adjust, Zimmerman said. "A period of acclimatization is necessary from a safety standpoint for just about everybody," she said. The risk in not easing into exercise is in overexerting before your body has learned how to shed heat efficiently. The outcomes could range from having a less rewarding workout to, in the worst cases, triggering an underlying heart problem or fatal heat stroke.

The body has two main ways of doing controlling heat, Zimmerman said. One is to dilate blood vessels near the skin. Blood that's heated in the body core by exercise can be cooled by radiating the heat through the skin into the air. Dilated blood vessels bring more blood to the skin. "It operates kind of like a car radiator does," Zimmerman said. The other method is by sweat production, which acts more like the car's air conditioner. Evaporation has a cooling effect. And when sweat evaporates, it gives up heat, which cools the skin. "The more you sweat, the more heat you lose," Zimmerman said. "As people get acclimated, they sweat more and lose heat better."

How long it takes to become acclimated varies from person to person, Zimmerman said. Trained athletes, who already sweat efficiently, take less time than do untrained people to get used to heat. However, the technique of acclimatization is the same for the trained and untrained - starting at a comfortable level and increasing it gradually.

Sweat output requires liquid input to keep the body's water level up. And people can lose water more easily than they realize. "The best way to say it is, if you just go by thirst alone, you'll probably underdrink by a third," said Mike Sawka, chief of the Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division, U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, Natick, Mass.

That's because the brain doesn't sense thirst until the fluid levels are already drawn down. The body then has to play catchup, drinking until the feeling of being thirsty goes away. As hot weather wears on and people become used to it, they become better at matching their liquid needs to their liquid output, Sawka said. But a person can lose 3 percent of body weight before feeling thirsty, Zimmerman said. And people may go through the summer in a continuous state of slight dehydration. This can account for the pounds that many people lose each summer, thinking they've been burning more calories by being more active, she said. "People are proud of that fact, but the reality is they are losing water, not fat," she said.
People also can see their exercise performance drop without realizing it, Sawka said. "If I ride a bike and I'm not competing, I'll just notice I rode a little slower - or I might not notice," he said. An athlete keeping track of time or distance might feel thirsty but not care, focusing instead on the event, Sawka noted. And an older person might not notice thirst quickly, he said - age dulls the ability to sense thirst. This is especially a risk for older people because dehydration, which makes the heart beat faster, can trigger underlying problems such as heart disease, he said.

For all exercisers, the way to head off trouble is to drink even when they are not thirsty, and water is the best drink, the experts said. Sports drinks that replace sweated-off carbohydrates and electrolytes are valuable only for people who exercise an hour or more, Sawka said. Some drinks should be avoided, Zimmerman said. Alcohol is among these, she said - it is a diuretic, so it makes you excrete water. Caffeine is a mild diuretic, so drinks with caffeine are "better than nothing," she said.

However, a noted researcher sees value in some flavored drinks. The use of salt and carbohydrates, as found in sports drinks, stimulates thirst, said Dr. Oded Bar-Or of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. His research looked at children, but the results probably hold for adults as well, the Canadian scientist said.

In Bar-Or's experiments, children who got a lab-prepared flavored drink with salt and carbohydrates drank enough to keep themselves fully hydrated. Flavored water alone left his test subjects slightly dehydrated, and plain chilled water did even less good, he said.

When I first started the Hitch fit program, I will be the first to admit I was skeptical. I mean, I’m 41 years old. My most fit years are behind me. Well, at least those were my excuses. At first, I was thinking I would be happy dropping 10 lbs and obtaining a shape that wasn’t round. Well, to my surprise it came off quite quickly. I thought that maybe there is something to this eating and exercise plan. So I shifted my goal…..again. And met that fairly quick. It began to become an addiction, and I was SEEING RESULTS. Motivation was high, I was feeling good. Then an interesting thing happened. I have been on blood pressure medications, cholesterol and triglyceride meds, and I was also taking oral diabetes meds on the verge of being placed on insulin. I went for my routine labs as I always do, and my labs came back nearly normal!! My Hemoglobin A1C (diabetes marker) had previously been 10.7 (5-6 is normal) and was back down to 7. So she wanted to retest. When those results returned they were even better at 6.8. I can happily report to you that I am currently OFF all my medications with normal lab results on EVERY facet of my blood chemistry. I have the documents to prove it. Those are the results of Hitchfit I am most proud of. I was killing myself slowly, and just chalked it up to being a normal process of age. I mean, dropping from 238 lbs to 186 lbs at my lowest weight losing 52 lbs, and dropping from close to 30 percent body fat to close to 11% percent is certainly an added bonus, as is being able to walk around a pool without a shirt and not feeling ridiculous. Knowing that I not only look and feel better, I’m also not a ticking time bomb. Had it not been for Hitchfit, the support and motivation from my wife and family, I would never be where I am now. Who knows, I may not have been here at all!

I started my life style change the end of August 2013. Certain things would make me notice the weight I was at. When I would get my hair cut I would look in the mirror and realize I didn’t like the person I was looking at. I started working out a little more than I usually had. I lost a few pounds here and there but not to the extent I was hoping for. I’ve been working out for several years but wasn’t getting any results. I was building muscle but without burning the fat it wasn’t showing. I thought I was doing things right and making better food choices but I wasn’t. Eating out once or twice week, drinking sweet tea, and consuming candy aren’t something you can do if your expecting any kind of change. I guess you can’t have a few margaritas a week and expect to lose any kind of weight :) it wasn’t until I started talking to Micah that I really started to understand my body and what I needed and didn’t need. He taught me what food choices I needed, what was good, what was bad, and everything in between. With that and the workouts he had me follow, he helped me transform my body and life into something I am happy to say I’m proud of. Thank you Micah for everything!

THE SETBACK (9 weeks in)



9 Weeks into his transformation BOOM. While at work a broiler exploded and his body was covered in 2nd and 3rd degree burns. He was hospitalized and could not workout for a few weeks. I remember getting the text from him with the pics and story and simply thinking REST and Recover, happy that he is alive. He responded back with I cannot wait to workout and start eating the way i have been again. He swears he recovered so quickly because of all the sweet potatoes i had him eat :) He didnt let this keep him from reaching his goals, the minute he was cleared to workout again he was back at it.

Alayne’s Story:

“My battle with “weight creep” started in my early 40’s. I tried all methods of exercise and calorie restriction to control it. When this didn’t work, I was convinced it was hormonal and I just needed to get those hormones balanced to get things back to normal, so I started going to all kinds of doctors, having all kinds of tests done to figure out what needed to be fixed. One doctor told me that I could eat any kind of protein I wanted (hot dogs!?!), but that I had to cut out ALL carbs – vegetables and fruits included. The only time I could eat carbs was if I was going to exercise immediately afterwards to burn it off.

There is one time that I remember my weight actually responding to what I did – maybe after some hormone therapy – but otherwise, I felt like I was exercising all the time and/or counting every calorie going into my mouth with no results. Why put out all of this effort with what seemed like no reward? I would quickly get discouraged and give up whatever I was trying at the time. I was trying to do everything myself with no real plan or guidance.

Fast forward to my late 40’s: My weight was at an all‐time high and I had to keep buying new clothes to fit into. I felt uncomfortable in anything fitted and I didn’t like seeing pictures of myself. I knew I wasn’t very overweight, just very uncomfortable, and very much not in control of where my health was going. My cholesterol was high and I was heading towards insulin resistance/pre‐diabetes. I was always tired and very lethargic. I didn’t realize how inactive I actually was.

I started looking into Hitch Fit because a friend of mine had used the program and had fabulous results. As a matter of fact, she is now a personal trainer in their gym now. But even with Amy’s amazing results and incredible support, I was scared to make the commitment to purchasing a program. I’m trying to run a house, work full time and very involved in our church. Where was I going to fit in the exercise?

And although I’m not a very picky eater, the others in my house are. I barely have time to plan and make one meal at night – I did not want to make 2 different meals. I finally decided to give this program the chance I deserved and purchased the onlineLose Weight Feel Great program in February this year.

I found ways to fit the exercise in. I got up earlier each morning to get my cardio finished before work. I have to admit, at first I really struggled with the morning workouts and dreaded them. I am a night owl, not a morning person, and I was so out of shape. I couldn’t increase the resistance on my elliptical or go very fast or for very long. I knew the settings I had previously been able to use, and was nowhere near that any more. It was hard to not let this be discouraging, but I stuck with the plan. Perseverance is so important and I had the right mindset. After a couple of weeks, my body started catching up to my mind and I realized that I had so much more energy on the days that I did my cardio first thing. I started becoming a morning person. I even missed not doing cardio early on days that other responsibilities came first.

I consistently followed my plan, but I was still bit nervous doing my first “check‐in” measurements and pictures after four weeks. The scale weight hadn’t gone down much, so I wasn’t sure if I was really getting anywhere. When I saw the pictures and numbers, though, it gave me the encouragement to stick with the plan. I was down 3% off my starting body fat and could see progress in the pictures!

About 2 months into my plan, my husband and I took a tropical vacation. I decided I needed to try on my summer clothes before the trip to see what I needed to shop for. I was so excited when I pulled out last summer’s shorts and realized there was no way I could wear them anymore – they were WAY too big. I had a whole “new” wardrobe of clothes I had long given up on! Dresses, jeans, sleeveless shirts – so many cute things that I loved wearing again!

The vacation was a little difficult. I kept up with my workouts, but there were many food temptations. I’d like to be able to say I stayed completely with my eating plan, but I do lack some willpower. The good news was that once I cleaned up my eating immediately when we returned, everything got back on track quickly. My body’s ability to burn through calories was increasing. I was resetting my new normal.

Overall, I lost 13 pounds and reduced my body fat from 23 to 17%. I decreased my hips by 4 inches and my waist by 5. I’m no longer uncomfortable in fitted or sleeveless clothes and love the muscles that have developed with the strength exercises. (I laugh as I write that – when chatting online prior to purchasing my plan, Micah “LOL”d me when I said I didn’t want to build muscle, just tone. I know now why he laughed, but you’ve seen the pictures!) Our family recently vacationed in Colorado, and even though running was difficult at the high altitude, I was in shape for all of the hiking and biking activities we did.

Brittany’s Story: 

“I have always led an active lifestyle ever since I was young, being a competitive dancer, cheerleading and joining a gym when I was in high school. I continued to be an avid gym goer into college and got big into running after I graduated, where I completed 5Ks and a half marathon. Shortly after that I faced some challenges struggling with finding a consistent job and going through a horrific break up, ending a 6 and a half-year relationship. At that time I went through a period where I lost a significant amount of weight (and not the healthy way) followed by gaining it all back and then some!

Although I never stopped going to the gym, I lost sight of my eating habits and what exactly I was putting in my mouth. That is what truly had an impact on my body. Coming from a big Italian family it is nearly impossible to avoid food, let only unhealthy ones. So for about a year I contemplated competing in a fitness show, and at 26 years old and the heaviest I had ever been in my life I knew that it was time. A friend of my mine who is a professional fitness competitor had recommended Hitch Fit to me and seeing her results was all the convincing I needed.
So I contacted Diana and she set me up on a 12-week program designed to get me stage ready! The program was tailored specifically to meet my needs and eased me into each competition prep phase week by week. I spoke with Diana on a weekly basis, sending progress pictures and body stats as she coached me through what type of nutrition and workouts I needed to work on. She was always honest with me telling me when I was making good way or when I needed to push a little harder. My plan was strict, however I knew it had to be in order for me to be able to compete. My diet was manageable since I do love healthy foods, it just taught me how to read labels properly, portion control and how to space out my eating times to keep my metabolism up. My workouts varied, which kept my body guessing and allowed me to try new things that I found to enjoy, instead of the same old boring routine. I woke up everyday seeing my same self in the mirror so the progress pictures are what really allowed me to notice the progress I was making. As it got closer to the show Diana guided me in getting together my posing and stage presence down.

July 2015, I stepped on stage in my first fitness competition feeling and looking the best I have ever been in my life! Without Hitch Fit, and the support and guidance from Diana I would not be where I am today, healthier and happier! Since show day Diana had given me a plan to incorporate in order to help maintain my results. I hope to compete in another show in the future however Hitch Fit has given me valuable skills and knowledge about nutrition and fitness that I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

5 Myths About Strength Training

The truth is that strength training is one of the absolute best things you can do for your health and appearance.

If you've fallen for these 5 myths then you're missing out on tremendous potential results.

Myth #1 Muscle Turns Into Fat

Why would anyone want to build muscle if it could morph into fat after a span of disuse? Rest assured that this is a myth of the highest order.

Muscle tissue is muscle tissue. Fat tissue is fat tissue. One will never become the other.

Myth #2 Strength Training Doesn't Burn Fat

On the contrary, muscle mass is your number one ally against fat gains.

A pound of muscle burns 10-20 calories each day, while you're just living and breathing. Regular strength training helps you increase your muscle mass as well as preserve existing muscle mass, turning you into a fat burning machine.

Myth #3 Lifting Weights Makes Women Bulk Up

Yes, strength training increases the amount of muscle on your body; so many women take this to mean that their body will become body-builder-esque, which is quite the look you're going for.

The truth is that the female body simply doesn't contain high enough levels of testosterone to produce that level of results without a very focused and dedicated effort.

The tighter, toned figure of a recreational female weight lifter is every bit feminine.

Myth #4 Strength Training Is For Young People Only

Ha, that's a used-up excuse that senior citizens across the globe have shattered.

Assuming that your doctor has given you the OK, you have much to gain from a regular weight lifting routine.

Improved balance and coordination, better strength and flexibility, and a decreased risk of osteoporosis are just the beginning.

Myth #5 Use Light Weight and High Reps To Tone
