Bowie State 3 - Cheyney 1 (VOLLEYBALL FINAL)

Lady Bulldogs Power past the Cheyney Lady Wolves 3-1 in Non-Conference Volleyball


BOWIE, Md. (November 4, 2014) - Sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) recorded a match-high 22 kills and junior Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) added another 14 kills in Bowie State 3-1 non-conference decision over Cheyney University of Pennsylvania on Tuesdayevening. The Lady Bulldogs won by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-21.

Bowie State sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) recorded a match-high 37 assists while redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned a match-high 20 digs. Ngundam and Archer-Simpson tallied double figure digs with 16 and 12 respectively. Mason paced the home team with a team-high three service aces to go along with five digs and a match-high three solo blocks.

Cheyney (1-29) was led by Breanna Joseph (Effort, PA.) with a double-double team-high 10 kills and 16 digs. Katherine Brooks (Irvine, Calif.) and Vishae Campbell knocked down eight and seven kills respectively for the Lady Wolves while Kennetha Wallace (Nashville, Tenn.) added two kills. Wallace was responsible for 18 of Cheyney’s 19 total assists.

Bowie State (7-20) had little trouble in the first two sets but experienced a 17-10 deficit in set three. Following a Lady Bulldogs timeout, the play of Mason sparked Bowie State and pulled the home team within two at 17-15.

The Lady Wolves maintained a third set lead until a Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) pulled the Lady Bulldogs even at 21-all. Cheyney regained the lead on the next rotation and held on to take the third set 25-22.

The fourth and final set of the night was full of excitement and hustle by both teams, but Bowie State claimed the victory and sweep the season series. The match saw 24 ties and eight lead changes.

Bowie State will close out the home portion of their 2014 schedule on Thursday (November 6th) hosting Goldey-Beacom College at 7 pmin the Lady Bulldogs final non-conference match of the season.
