LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. The Bowie State University softball team breezed to 13-1 and 15-6 wins over the Lady Lions of The Lincoln University on Saturday afternoon. With the sweep, the Lady Bulldogs move their season record to 6-21, 5-9 in CIAA play and 2-7 in the North.
Junior Erica Atkins (Burtonsville, Md.) paced BSU with three hits while junior teammates Cassandra Clayborne (Damascus, Md.) and Hayley Flint (Mesa, Ariz.) and senior Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Md.) added a pair of hits each for the Lady Bulldogs.
The BSU Lady Bulldogs pounced on the Lady Lions from the opening pitch, scoring eight runs in the 1st inning on no hits. In fact, the first nine Bowie State players to step to the plate walked.
Bowie State padded their lead to 11-0 on two hit second inning with the senior pitcher Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, Texas) getting the first Lady Bulldogs hit. Junior Erica Atkins (Burtonsville, Md.) accounted the BSUs second hit of the inning.
The lone Lady Lions run in game one came in the bottom of the 3rd inning on an Emily Woodruff (San Diego, Calif.) single up the middle, scoring Makeda White (Aberdeen, Md.).
The Lady Bulldogs closed out the opening contest via the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom of the 5th inning. Following back-to-back walks, Atkins stroked a single to center which scored senior Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Md.). Bowie States Hernandez crossed the dish by way of a wild pitch to account for the final run of game one.
Hernandez (5-9) picked up the win in the circle, striking out four and freshman Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits.
Game two began pretty much like one with seven of the first nine Bowie State batters getting a free pass via a walk by Lincolns Sead. After just one inning, Sead was pulled with the Lady Lions trailing 10-0.
The Lady Lions were able to push one run across in the bottom of the 1st inning following an Avree Morton (Uniondale, N.Y.) single that scored Woodruff.
The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to 12-1 before the Lady Lions scored three in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The trio of Woodruff, Morton and Toni Smith (Bear, Del.) recorded triples in the inning.
Bowie State answered with three runs of their own in the top of the 4th inning to put the game out of reach at 15-4.
Back-to-back doubles by Morton and Smith assisted in the Lady Lions final runs of game two. Lincoln tallied 10 hits in the second game of the doubleheader but committed three errors. Sead (0-11) took the loss in the circle for Lincoln, walking 10 of 14 batters faced.
Lincoln (0-12, 0-10 CIAA, 0-5 North) was led at the plate by Morton and Smith three and two hits respectively.
Megan Windsor earned her second win of the season, striking out five. Freshman Victoria Lizardo (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Kiara Washington (Bowie, Md.) recorded four and three RBI respectively in game two.
The Lady Bulldogs will be right back in action on Sunday (4/6) hosting New York Institution of Technology in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 pm at Lady Bulldogs Field.
