How to Jump Higher the Right Way

Hello there Athletes and Warriors!
An age-old goal but still a good one that I get from Athletes all over the world is "How can I jump higher?". Certainly one of the most difficult skills to advance in by totally doable.

The better news is by applying these methods to your training, you will be in a position to increase foot speed, explosiveness, agility and more. While you are soaring with the elites! Check out our guest article for more.

-Coach Nate

How to Jump Higher the Right Way

The two most important keys to jumping higher are your form and workouts. If you don't get these two things correct then you cannot jump higher, and you will likely lose inches off of your vertical jump. Don't miss these two simple things. If you want to jump higher, then there are right ways and wrong ways to do it. The wrong ways will actually make you lose your vertical jump, which is not what you want to do. The right way can get you to improve your vertical from 2-6 inches in less than 45 minutes. I have seen it happen when athletes simply know how to warm up, stretch, and take-off correctly.

There are two things that are crucial to jumping higher, and they are having the correct form and having the right jumping workouts.

When you have the right jumping form, you will use the strength you have in your legs most effectively. And once you are using them most effectively, then you can start to build your jumping muscles to increase your jump even more.

The key to your jumping form is to use your arms correctly. The best way to do this is by practicing with just your arms. I usually start with box jumps which focus on this the most. Stand in front of a large box or platform, and with your feet shoulder width apart, use your entire body (especially your arms) to jump up as high as you can, onto the box.

The Most Comprehensive Vertical Jump Program Available.

Also, when you jump, make sure that you stand tall. Because if you start to lean forward, then too much power will end up pushing you forward instead of straight up. You need most of your power to push you straight up in order to get the most out of your jump.

Lastly, you need to make sure that your jumping workouts are helping you, not hurting you. If you start doing slow movements like squats and stuff, then you can actually lose your vertical jump because it is strengthening the wrong types of muscles. The right types of muscles are fast-twitch muscles which are responsible for quick Science Articles, explosive movements like jumping and sprinting.

So your jumping workouts need to include plyometric exercises like box jumps and depth jumps and squat hops and jump rope exercises. Those exercises will help to build the strength you need in order to increase your jumping power.

The Jump Manual - Increase Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers

Nate-and-Michelle-Miller-Transformation-1997.jpgThe Jump Manual in case you haven't heard is the "bible" of explosive training, much less considered the best step-by-step method of adding legitimate inches to your vertical. By jumping higher you can be assured that your overall foot speed with increase, your power that translates to contact sports will increase as well as your dynamic flexibility. And for those of you who simply want to look and feel better, add a little of this training to your program as many of the plyometric exercises are excellent ways to burn fat without hours of long boring cardio. So indeed jump to it! :)

The Jump Manual - Increase Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers
by Will Theydon

Fast twitch muscles fibers are actually the ones who present the speed for muscle contraction. They give the athlete speed, agility, power and quickness. They are actually 10 times faster than other muscle groups. One way to increase fast twitch muscle fibers is through isometric training. This exercise will most likely isolate and condition your fast twitch muscle fibers and increase your speed and quickness.
get-paid-to-play-and-share-728x90.gif
Isometrics is ideal to increase fast twitch muscle fibers, thereby helping to develop speed training. Usually, the fast twitch muscle fibers are the most neglected muscles since most athletes are actually focused on doing endurance training, thereby working the slow twitch muscles instead.

Plyometric exercises may also help increase fast twitch muscle fibers. Other exercises include drop and catch movements, squats, lifts, drop jumps, and other types of exercises that require supramaximal forces.

These types of exercises do not only help increase fast twitch muscle fibers but also increase bone density, power and strength. Plyometric exercises benefit children, teens and adults. It improves hip and lumbar spine bone mass in children and later reduces the negative effects of old age in the musculoskeletal system.

Doing the drills regularly helps prevent anterior cruciate ligament injuries, as long as there should be enough exercises preceding these drills to act as a warm up. Make sure that there is a gradual practice of the movements since if you act on it in a fast manner, you might suffer from the injuries.

These plyometric drills, which are the best exercises that increase fast twitch muscle fibers, can be done anywhere. You do not need to be in a gym to practice them. You may even opt to practice them at home. They basically include exercises such as jumping, skipping, and hopping, although they have different varieties to it. Repetitive sets are ideal and another option is to do it with weights.

How to Jump Higher in Volleyball

Diego-and-Nate-Senior-Night-2015.jpgJumping higher is a must for just about any field or court sport. The reason is that the higher you jump, the more explosive you are as an athlete. Explosiveness is a cousin to overall foot speed as speed is one of the defining factors in vertical leap. Read on and learn how to increase your vertical as it applies to Volleyball in this instance.

How to Jump Higher in Volleyball
by Josh Bidds

Volleyball and basketball happen to be the two sports that require the most jumping. The approach in volleyball is one where you can go full out and nobody will step in your way so you can expect to jump your highest.

One of the best weighted exercises for jumping are squats. Don't think you can just do tons of squats and that you will be blocking balls with your armpits. Squats alone will really only get your legs stronger but not faster.

Doing small sub maximal repetitive jumps will only train your muscles to do exactly that, jump continually at a minimal heights. For volleyball training you need to focus on low reps in each set of jumps. If you are a blocker you need to focus on jump exercises that don't have an approach. Using a chair, do jumps from a seated position exploding up to jump onto a box at least 2 feet high. Do only 8 reps on a high enough box that the eighth rep is hard to finish.

So how exactly should you train to get the most of out of a plyometrics program? This is the question that has been studied by coaches and athletes for years. Working out improperly in the gym would just result in you doing a lot of work and getting very little results from it.

You should learn how to train smarter not harder when it comes to jumping. It may come as a surprise but there are workout programs that will increase your vert 2 inches in only 2 weeks.

This could make the difference of making a point or getting blocked. Imagine training for two months and adding 10 inches to your vertical! These results are not impossible. Remember to always check with a doctor before undergoing any excessive training and never train when you are sore.

Squats are a very good exercise to build the strength of the legs. Before you move on to plyos you need to be able to do ten squats in 10 seconds with your weight on the bar.

If you can do this then you are ready to start training for speed. Bo
More Information:
x jumps are a very good way to start. Find a box about 2 feet high and do sets of eight reps as fast as you can. Rest completely between sets!

Excel at any Football Combine..

Banner4
Whether you are a youth, high school, college, or pro prospect, the combines are an opportunity to showcase your physical and mental talents to your future football opportunities. Doing the work now much like that prescribed in US Sports Strength and Conditioning NFL Combine Workout will help you rise above the rest.
From NFL.com:

Each February, hundreds of the very best college football players are invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., where executives, coaches, scouts and doctors from all 32 NFL teams conduct an intense, four-day job interview in advance of the NFL Draft. Here is a brief breakdown of the measurable drills:

40-yard dash
The 40-yard dash is the marquee event at the combine. It's kind of like the 100-meters at the Olympics: It's all about speed, explosion and watching skilled athletes run great times. These athletes are timed at 10, 20 and 40-yard intervals. What the scouts are looking for is an explosion from a static start.

Bench press
The bench press is a test of strength -- 225 pounds, as many reps as the athlete can get. What the NFL scouts are also looking for is endurance. Anybody can do a max one time, but what the bench press tells the pro scouts is how often the athlete frequented his college weight room for the last 3-5 years.

Vertical jump
The vertical jump is all about lower-body explosion and power. The athlete stands flat-footed and they measure his reach. It is important to accurately measure the reach, because the differential between the reach and the flag the athlete touches is his vertical jump measurement.

Broad jump
The broad jump is like being in gym class back in junior high school. Basically, it is testing an athlete's lower-body explosion and lower-body strength. The athlete starts out with a stance balanced and then he explodes out as far as he can. It tests explosion and balance, because he has to land without moving.

3 cone drill
The 3 cone drill tests an athlete's ability to change directions at a high speed. Three cones in an L-shape. He starts from the starting line, goes 5 yards to the first cone and back. Then, he turns, runs around the second cone, runs a weave around the third cone, which is the high point of the L, changes directions, comes back around that second cone and finishes.

Shuttle run
The short shuttle is the first of the cone drills. It is known as the 5-10-5. What it tests is the athlete's lateral quickness and explosion in short areas. The athlete starts in the three-point stance, explodse out 5 yards to his right, touches the line, goes back 10 yards to his left, left hand touches the line, pivot, and he turns 5 more yards and finishes.

What Athletes Eat To Win

This article is a little dated (I think Eric Snow retired from the NBA  after the 2008 season), but the information is just as valid, and maybe even more so now. All US Sports Online Strength and Conditioning Programs come with our state-of-the-art nutritional meal planner.

  • What Athletes Eat To Win
Three top athletes, a professional basketball player, a triathlete and a rodeo clown, reveal the dietary regimens they say help them maintain peak performance.
    Eric Snow
    Professional Basketball Player

I try to be conscious of my diet, partly because I can't knock off the pounds as easily as when I was younger and partly because you don't want to be too full playing in the NBA.
Some guys eat whatever they want, but I stick to a fairly consistent regimen: On game days, breakfast consists of a bagel or some toast and a piece of fruit; when we don't have a game, I might have a bigger breakfast such as pancakes. But if I eat a really big breakfast on game days, it throws me off: I might be full until 4 p.m., so I'll skip lunch and can't eat because it's too close to game time.
Lunch is usually my big meal, some pasta or chicken. On game days, that's all I have until after the game. Then, I might eat something like a turkey sandwich or a salad,  something just to tide me over. I'm usually not hungry after a game and don't want to eat a heavy meal before going to sleep. I may splurge on ice cream, but that's pretty much it for junk food. And I never eat pork or beef. Before I was in the NBA, I ate a lot more food and still felt hungry. Now, I feel satisfied.
My biggest concentration for competing is to drink enough. I drink four 32-ounce glasses of water or Gatorade throughout the day, including one at every meal. That's the real key drinking enough. Eric Snow is the starting point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers.

    Doug Stern
    Triathelete

How and what I eat before exercise depends on many factors, the distance or duration of a race or workout, how long I've been training, the weather, but one thing always is constant: fluid intake, which is 8 ounces every hour throughout the day. During intense exercise, you can sweat as much as 8 ounces every 20 minutes.
When I was competing, I trained about two to three hours a day, and I would lose about 8 ounces of sweat every 20 minutes or so. To keep myself hydrated, I would drink gallons of water mixed with powdered vitamin C and electrolytes throughout the day. But during competition, I, as well as many other triathletes, drank a mixture of water and, flat cola, which we mixed beforehand. We did this because the cola contains caffeine to keep you up, and it is easily digested.
My competition diet was high-carb and healthful, but I've always focused more on when I eat than what I eat. If a race were on Saturday, I would carbo-load from Wednesday on by keeping my meals constant but decreasing my activity level. That means a breakfast of cereal and fruit; lunch consists of pasta or a bagel and vegetables; and dinner contains meat or chicken for protein. The night before a race, I would have a big lunch and a very small dinner, if at all, to keep my bowels fairly empty. The morning of a race, I would only have coffee and cereal at least 1 hours before the start of the race.
Doug Stern has competed in nearly 40 triathlons, a race consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 18-mile run and 50-mile bike race. He wrote a training column for Triathlete magazine and currently teaches swimming in New York City.
    Paul Bonds
    Rodeo Bullfighter

As a rodeo clown, my job is to protect the cowboy to distract a raging bull long enough for the cowboy to get away. It's tough and dangerous work, and you have to be in top physical condition. A rodeo cowboy has to last eight seconds on a bull whose mission is to throw him, but I'm out there working for that eight seconds, the next eight seconds, the next eight seconds, one cowboy after another, for the entire night.
It's hard to maintain a steady healthful diet because I'm on the road continuously from April to October, and I'm forced to eat a lot of fast food. I do try to eat a high-carbohydrate meal before I work to give me the energy I need. I eat a lot of pasta and beans; it helps keep my legs fresh. But no matter where I am or what food is available, I drink plenty of water four 32-ounce cups of water each day. No way you can do this work without keeping yourself hydrated.
Paul Bonds, a member of the International Professional Rodeo Association, spends half the year touring the U.S. rodeo circuit and the other half at home in Oklahoma City.
