NCAA Basketball Bowie State Men's and Women's Results Vs Fayettville State

Fayetteville State Broncos Top Bowie State’s Bulldogs 70-58 in Non-Conference Matchup

https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=821775&u=1164047&m=58751&urllink=&afftrack=FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Bowie State University dropped a non-conference contest on Monday night, as the Fayetteville State University Broncos defeated the Bulldogs 70-58. The loss dropped the Bowie State record to 10-8 overall while the Broncos improve to 15-3 on the year.

Similar to the Bulldogs' previous game against Claflin University on Saturday, both teams kept the score reasonably even throughout the first half. The most significant lead of the period didn't come until the 2:30 mark when FSU’s Jalen Seegars knocked down a 3-pointer to extend Fayetteville State's lead to 12.

Bowie State did not regain the lead the entire half, after holding it briefly near the beginning of the game. However, heading into halftime, the Bulldogs held the advantage in points in the paint (16-14) and second-chance points (7-4). Still, the Broncos held 38-29 lead at the break, as they were shooting 54 percent (15-of-28).

Coming out of halftime, the Broncos continued to extend the lead off their first-half momentum. Ty McClain scored on a layup, and Seegars connected on another shot from long distance. As Bowie State struggled to respond with a bucket on their own, the Broncos were looking at a 15-point lead after Mark Burton knocked down a jumper at the 17-minute mark.

Around the ten-minute mark, it was the same story. Seegars hit another 3-pointer, and then Will Brown converted on a slam dunk. Although the lead was as high as 17 at the time, the Bulldogs continued to fight, as Bowie State senior Rinardo Perry (Washington, D.C) converted on back-to-back layups. But again, the Broncos would respond with Darian Dixon hitting a jump shot.

Throughout the final five-minutes, the Broncos put the game away as Bowie State continued to find ways to stop them on defense. For the Bulldogs, senior Juwan Smith (Lexington Park, Md.) led the double-figure scoring attack with 15 points while fellow senior Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) chipped in a personal season-best 13 points. Junior Justin Route (Washington, D.C.) and senior Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) both added eight points each in the setback.

As a team, Bowie State shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 23 percent (3-of-13) from long range and made 69 percent (9-of-13) of its free throws. Fayetteville State shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field, 47 percent (8-of-17) from deep, and 44 percent (8-of-18) on free throw attempts.

Bowie State returns on to host Shaw University in a conference matchup on Saturday (January 18) as part of a doubleheader. The Bulldogs and Bears will tipoff at 3 p.m.

Fayetteville State Blows Past Bowie State 74-47

https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=821775&u=1164047&m=58751&urllink=&afftrack=
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Bowie State University women’s basketball team had a night to forget after falling to Fayetteville State University 74-47 in a non-conference contest. The Broncos had three players in double-figures and were led by Katisha Hyman, who dropped 18 points in the victory. The Broncos improve to 9-7 while the Bulldogs dip to 14-2.
Bowie State senior Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, Md.) led the team in scoring with 12 points each. Junior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) added nine points and senior Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) contributed seven points. Hutton and Christian were Bowie State’s rebound leaders with seven apiece.
Overall, FSU had a solid game of balance scoring with Shantel Bennett and Aminata Johnson both scoring 13 points. London Thompson added 14 huge rebounds for the Broncos as well. Fayetteville State shot a scorching hot 54.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor while Bowie State struggled at 28.6 percent (16-of-56).
The Broncos opened the game with a 16-3 run in the first nine minutes and closed out the quarter with a 18-5 lead. FSU held a 12-2 advantage while scoring six points off Bowie State’s turnovers.
BSU would finally wake up in the second period. However, FSU would continue its dominance and led 31-16 with 5:23 remaining. The Broncos outscored the Bulldogs 12-7 to end the quarter and went into halftime with a 43-23 cushion.
Bowie State would not get closer than 15 points as the home team kept their foot on the pedal throughout the third period and maintained a 20-point lead 57-37 going into the final stanza.
It was one of those games for the Bulldogs as they couldn’t get anything going on offense. FSU extended its lead to 68-44 in the fourth period with 2:44 left to play. Nothing changed after that as Bowie State has now dropped two of its last three games.
The Bulldogs will now have five days to regroup until its next matchup at home versus Shaw University on Saturday (1/18). Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

Tips for Running and Handling the Ball in Transition

A large part of the game of basketball is understanding the surrounding circumstances. With this comes a time and place where pushing it in transition makes sense. However, there will be other times where it makes more sense to slow it down and set up an offense. Some teams favor getting up-and-down to score in transition, while others take a more methodical approach. This article will take a look at the up-tempo offenses that strive to effectively and efficiently score the ball in transition.

Advantages

Before I get deeper into specific drills to improve your own abilities in handling and moving the ball up-court in transition, I thought it would be best to provide you with details on why and when it works. First off, it can easily produce some quick points. If the defense doesn’t get back right away, lay-up opportunities will be available. This leads me to the next advantage, which is the fact that it pressures the opposition to get back quickly. As a result, you may see more rushed shot attempts or less aggression in attacking the offensive glass: both positives for the team choosing to get out fast in transition. Lastly, it allows for more players to see court time. Due to the up-tempo nature it creates, coaches are forced to sub players in-and-out more frequently. This creates a more unifying culture and prevents any egos from forming in the locker room.

Get It to the Guards!

The most important tip for running the ball in transition is to get the ball in the hands of a guard immediately. Upon getting the defensive rebound, all forwards and centers should look to a guard as the primary ball handler. In order to so, a guard needs to hang back to provide a receiving option for the forward to pass to. It’s also important to point out that you can still run a transition offense even off a made basket. In order to implement this, coaches should designate one player to be the full-time in-bounds passer. This will speed up the overall process and ensure there are no situations where no one is there to throw in.
Ultimately, all young players must understand that if they’re a forward or center, the first order of business should be to get the ball in the hands of a guard.
Guards train to develop their ball skills to handle the rock in tight situations. For young guards, I recommend continuously working on these abilities. This video from CoachTube provides a number of incredibly helpful tutorials to learning new moves.
Practice these and make them seem second-nature!

Stay Under Control!

When younger players hear the coach talk about implementing an up-tempo, transition offensive strategy, it can be exciting. After all, you’ll get the opportunity to push it every time and likely get a few easy lay-up chances every game. However, the key is to stay under control and know when to push it. You won’t be able to play the transition game after every missed shot.
Additionally, the opposition might focus more on getting back if they get burned by the transition a couple times. With this said, if you’re the guard, you need to pick and choose times to speed it up. At the same time, when you are handling the ball in transition, keep your head up. It’s vital to constantly be gauging the surrounding circumstances and looking for passing lanes.
Also, never force it into the paint if the defense is already set up. Sometimes this will result in a pair of free throws, but more often than not it will be a charge or a careless turnover.

Know Your Lanes

I’ve already started to delve into some of the basics of playing in transition, which has included getting the ball in the hands of the guard and staying under control. The next element is for the other players to know their roles. Typically, coaches preach for the point guard to receive the outlet pass from the rebounder in the middle of the court. At this time, the other guard and small forward should be racing up the sidelines. The power forward will follow slightly behind the point guard to present yet another opportunity. Lastly, the rebounder (the center in this case, but could also very well be the power forward) will serve as the trail man. The center’s roll is to present a backup option, possibly as a pull-up three, or the emergency defense in case the transition chance goes awry. Each of the particular lanes may change based on where the players are at the time of the rebound, but the key is to fill each of those lanes. This gives the point guard the most room and options to work with.

2-on-1 and 3-on-2

A couple of the more common fast break/transition opportunities that there will be are the 2-on-1 and 3-on-2. Many coaches practice each of these a decent amount in practice, as there easy to train with and are perfect game-type situations. In this section, I’ll provide a few helpful hints that I’ve taken away from my playing and scouting experience.

2-on-1

On the 2-on-1 break, I believe it is most effective for the ball handler to take a shoot first mentality. As he or she is racing up the court, they should utilize their peripheral vision to see where and who their teammate is and where the opposition is. The reason why I say “who” is because certain players like bigs may be more adept at catching a lob rather than a pass where they have to put a dribble down. With this shoot first mentality, attack until the defender makes a decision and picks one of the two offensive players.

3-on-2

With the 3-on-2, you have to remember to keep the ball in the middle of the court. Otherwise, it becomes much easier for the defense to prevent all passing lanes. Most of the time, with these situations, I like the point guard to stop around the free throw line and make the open pass. One of the defenders will likely pick up the ball handler, while the other will choose one of the two wings. In the times where the defenders pick up both wings, go straight to the hole and either finish with a layup or a floater. At all costs, avoid overpassing, which can easily end in a turnover and missed opportunity.

Game Experience

In the end, the best way to become a more effective player in running and handling the rock in transition is to do it in actual games. Doing so will increase your confidence that you can consistently make the right reads and get the easy bucket. You’ll become more comfortable reading defenses and knowing when to push it and when to slow it down to run the offense. Transition offense can be very exciting, but while any play can look like a potential transition opportunity, not every chance is going to work out!

Miranda Bogan - Girls Basketball Recruiting Video - Combo Highlights (Mukwonago High School / 1on1)

Presented On US Sports Net By: CoachTube-Basketball

I attend Mukwonago High School (Mukwonago, Wisconsin) and will be in the graduating class of 2019. I play basketball for both Mukwonago High School and for 1on1 Milwaukee girls AAU program. I have a strong passion for the game of basketball and am prepared to do what it takes to play at the collegiate level. I am a very versatile guard who is effective in the point guard position, but equally as strong in the wing and shooting guard positions. My advanced ball handling abilities coupled with quick speed, allows me to beat my defenders and create opportunities for my teammates as well as myself. Although I am a strong shooter with a consistent long range shot and pull-up jumper, I also love to drive and finish at the rim. I have a high basketball IQ and very good court vision, which allows me to make great passes to the open player and take advantage of high pressure situations. As a high energy player, I also enjoy playing defense by creating forced turnovers and steals. I continuously work hard on and off the court, striving to improve my basketball skills, physical ability, and endurance. I pride myself on being a great teammate, as well as a positive leader. This is a combination video that highlights a variety of my basketball skills. I have also posted additional highlight videos that are more focused to a specific skill. 3-Point Shooting Highlights: https://youtu.be/d22tXR7rt_A Assists Highlights: https://youtu.be/mFAiU6AU3-c Layup Highlights: https://youtu.be/Uno_FeetqnU For more information please contact me at Miranda_Bogan@yahoo.com or visit my player profile page at http://1on1milwaukee.com/miranda-bogan/.

Bowie State Bulldogs Capture Tough 75-70 Road Win at Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – It was the prettiest win, but Bowie State University will certainly take the hard fought 75-70 road win over Elizabeth City State University.

Bowie State (11-11, 6-3 CIAA, 4-1 North) was paced by sophomore Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) with a career-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with a team-best seven rebounds. Seniors Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) and Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) added 15 and 10 points respectively in the victory.

The Bowie State Bulldogs took a 38-33 lead into intermission, shooting 55.6 percent from the field (15-of-27) and they knocked down 5-of-7 free throws over the first 20 minutes. Turnovers were a sore spot in the first half for the Bulldogs as they committed 10.

The first half of play featured five ties and four lead changes with each team holding a six-point lead at one point. Elizabeth City State held a 10-4 lead at the 17:42 mark but Bowie State used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 12-all just over three minutes later.

The Vikings held an 18-14 advantage following a Corey Mendez dunk only to have the Bulldogs run off four unanswered points to trim the ECSU lead to 18-17.

The lead changed hands two more times in the first half, but the Bulldogs closed the final 4:29 with an 11-4 run to account for the five-point halftime lead.

Bowie State led by a game-high nine points early in the second half, but Elizabeth City State battled back to within two (52-50) at the 12:53 mark.

ECSU’s Joseph Allen’s layup cut the Bulldogs lead to 56-55 and Ahmaad Wilson’s 3-pointer made it 59-55. Back-to-back layups by Allen tied the game at 59-all at the 7:45 mark.

A pair of Zaccheus Hobbs free throws gave Elizabeth City State its first lead since and another Allen layup put the Vikings up 63-60 with 6:37 remaining in the game.

A Fleming floater in the paint put the Bulldogs back on top (64-63) with 4:59 remaining in the contest and freshman Justin Route’s (Washington, D.C.) tip-in made the score 66-63 Bowie State.

The Vikings kept it close and trailed the Bulldogs 69-67 with 1:55 to go in the key CIAA Northern Division contest but were never able to mount a comeback.

Elizabeth City State (9-10, 2-7 CIAA, 1-4 North) was led by Hobbs with a game-high 23 points and Shyheid Pettaway contributed 13 points. Allen and Mendez tallied 10 points apiece for the Vikings.

Bulldogs men’s basketball return to action on Wednesday, February 7th, hosting Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. The Bulldogs and Lions will get underway at 7:30 p.m. in BSU’s A.C. Jordan Arena.
