Strength Coach Timing Ten Yard Dashes

Michael Boyle -
Tony Holler's Record, Rank and Publish was a game changer for us at MBSC and got us timing both 10 yard dashes and, Flying 10's.
One subject that keeps coming up is “what is a good time”?
I can provide times for elite Professional Hockey, elite Women's Hockey ( US Olympians and NWHL) , and Elite College Hockey  (NCAA Division 1 men's and women's).
I can also provide comparative times for high school and middle school athletes.
However, in order to do so there needs to be a few parameters. Tony Holler's times for Flying 10's are taken in the 30-40 yard segment of a forty yard dash. We would refer to this as a 30 meter fly-in.
The length of the fly-in will obviously influence the time. A longer fly-in will yield a lower time. We experimented with 5, 10 and 15 yard fly-in's and every athlete gets faster as we add 5 yards.
We use a 10 yard fly-in due to space constraints most of the year. Although this may not be optimal, it is what we can do!
In addition, our times are from a standing start using the Brower start block ( not a starting block but, a block feature of the Brower Timer that records start at foot movement). This is a two point start.
The reason this information is important is so that we get an apples to apples comparison.
Here are our times from this past year. A reminder, 10's were done from a 2 point start with electronic timing. Hand held times will not be close and, hand start/ electronic finish will also not be close to our times.
Flying 10's were recorded with a 10 yard fly-in also with a Brower Electronic timer. For flying tens you will need two sets of sensors. These are best times, not averages.
NHL
Standing 10   1.2 sec       Flying 10 ( 10 yd fly) 1.04-1.07

iHealthTube Featuring: This Cancer Survivor's Tips for Prevention and Sierra Nevada Cancer Center Talks Breast Cancer: Care, Prevention, Risk Factors

After recovering from cancer over 40 years ago, Dr. Carl Helvie discusses his thoughts on prevention and treatment, to a degree. Find out what he's done and recommends that's easy for people to do to help the body stay healthy or regain health. [Video Below].

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center Talks Breast Cancer: Care, Prevention, Risk Factors
By: Jorge Perez

The idea of undergoing any cancer treatment can be difficult, which is why Dr. Jorge Perez and his team strive to offer immediate Advanced Cancer Care to patients and their families.

"I work personally with patients and their families and collaborate closely on disease management," said Dr. Perez. " I want all of my patients to beat their cancer, and I will do everything that I can to help them restore their health."

The team prides itself on its personal approach, and SNCC patients become part of our extended family of cancer warriors and survivors.

"We are here to help," said Dr. Perez. "While you are in our care, we want you to feel like you have a friend -- and a resource that can help connect you with information, support, ideas or just an ear to listen."

And the best feedback we can hear is that our patients felt supported throughout the process.

"I feel very blessed that the Sierra Nevada Cancer Center has been helping me fight my spreading breast cancer," said SNCC patient and South Lake Tahoe resident Kathy B. "Dr. Perez and his staff are very supportive, inspirational, professional and secure. An illness like mine makes life difficult every day, but being able to communicate and stay focused on my medications helps me stay strong and encouraged to continue with all my treatments. Thank you with all my heart and soul."

Preventive Measures

Treatment and early detection is what has given the millions of breast cancer survivors their best chance at beating cancer.

To reduce your risk of breast cancer:
* Increase your level of physical activity
* Maintain a healthy weight and diet
* Decrease the consumption of alcohol
* Talk with your doctor about ways to avoid Combined Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Risk Factors

Many factors contribute to the risk of developing breast cancer -- gender, age, family history and race among them.
* Breast cancer occurs nearly 100 times more often in women than in men. Men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer, but they have a far greater risk developing Prostate Cancer.
* Two out of three women with invasive cancer are diagnosed after age 55.
* If your mother, sister, father or child has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the risk of you developing breast cancer increases, especially if your relative was diagnosed before the age of 50.
* It is unknown as to why, but breast cancer is more common in Caucasian women.
Bio:
Keep in mind: You only have control over some aspects of your risk factors. Sierra Nevada Cancer is here to help if you are diagnosed, with facilities and treatments that will encourage healing in your battle against cancer.

Thanks to remarkable improvements in cancer detection, care and research, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today. Our last post talked about treatment options and detection methods. This time, we're talking about the role of personal care when diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as preventive measures and risk factors.

Understanding Mental Health

By: Pedro Gonzalez

Mental health is as important as physical health. Still, millions of Americans suffer with various types of mental illness and mental health problems, such as social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, addiction to drugs and alcohol, and personality disorders. Mental illness and psychological disorders have good treatment options with medications, psychotherapy, or other treatments.

Mental health concerns everyone. It affects our ability to cope with and manage change, life events and transitions such as bereavement or retirement. All human beings have mental health needs, no matter what the state of their psyche. This book is written specifically for those who want to have an introduction to mental health, mental illness and mental health problems. It is written in simple language from a person that is curious about the subject and wants to share with you his research.

My curiosity about what makes certain people successful, drove me into the road of mental health. I am not an expert in the subject of mental illness ad treatments, thus before any actions to self-treat or self-diagnose your mental health status you should consult with a qualified physician who can properly diagnose and treat any potential mental illnesses. What became clear to me is that there is more to good health than just a physically healthy body: a healthy person should also have a healthy mind. A person with a healthy mind should be able to think clearly, should be able to solve the various problems faced in life, should enjoy good relations with friends, colleagues at work and family, and should feel spiritually at ease and bring happiness to others in the community.

Why should you be concerned about mental illness?

As mentioned earlier, our mental health affect how we perceive many aspects of our lives. It is an integral part of our whole health. There are many reasons why you need to be concerned about
mental illnesses.:

• Because they affect us all. It is estimated that one in five of all adults will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime.
• Because they are a major public health burden. Studies from nearly every corner of the world show that as much as 40% of all adults attending general health care services are suffering from some kind of mental illness.
• Because they are very disabling. Even though the popular belief is that mental illnesses are less serious than physical illness, they do in fact produce severe disability. They can also cause death, as a result of suicide and accidents.

The World Health Report from the World Health Organization in 2001 found that four out of the ten
most disabling conditions in the world were mental illnesses. Depression was the most disabling disorder, ahead of anemia, malaria and all other health problems.

• Because mental health services are very inadequate. Specialists spend most of their time caring for people who suffer from "severe mental disorders" (‘psychoses’). These are quite rare, but are also the very diseases that the community associates with mental illness. Most people with the much commoner types of mental health problems, such as depression or alcohol problems, would not consult a mental health specialist.
• Because mental illness leads to stigma. Most people with a mental health problem would never admit to it. Those with a mental illness are often discriminated against by the community and even their own family.
• Because mental illness can be treated with simple, relatively inexpensive methods. This is the good news! It is true that many mental illnesses cannot be ‘cured’. However, many physical illnesses, such as cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis, are also not curable. Yet, much can be done to improve the quality of life of those who suffer these conditions and the same applies to mental illness.

It is important to understand mental health so we can help ourselves and our loved ones. The stigma often associated with the many forms of mental illnesses is very real. For example, many people with bipolar disorder or other mental illnesses are afraid to share their condition with other people for fear of ridicule or judgment. The stigma is so real in fact many will avoid telling friends or family of their mental condition. Many people with bipolar disorder face stigma and discomfort from well-meaning friends and family members that don't really understand bipolar disorder. It is common for patients with bipolar disorder to feel misunderstood. Unfortunately even many health care providers carry with them a biased attitude toward bipolar patients. Many have a difficult time focusing on the real reason a person is in their office. Instead they focus on the mental health issue.

Here are some small steps patients and family members can take to help overcome the stigma associated with mental illness:

* Always accept your condition for what it is.
* Never attempt to hide your condition for fear that others will be un-accepting or misunderstand you.
* Educate friends and family. Direct them to a number of sites that help explain bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. Great reference sites include the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
* Confidently explain that one if five people suffers from some form of mental illness or another.
* Remember that you are more an insider than you realize.
* One out of every five of your friends, acquaintances or associates likely suffers from some form of mental illness. -Use support groups to help bolster your self-confidence and promote your inner peace and well-being.

If you are interested in learning more about mental health, I have compiled an easy to read and understand e-book "Understanding Mental Health" were I cover types, causes, and treatments available.

Funny Christmas Stories to Share with Your Loved Ones
By: Jasmine Montford

Christmas is a time of goodwill, good cheer and good times with family and friends. Christmas songs are sung, Christmas dishes and desserts are shared, and Christmas decorations are put up in advance of Christmas Day. Well, why stop there when you can also share funny Christmas stories with family and friends gathered in the family home?

Think of these Christmas-themed funny short stories as your family’s new tradition for the holidays and, thus, add more fun, more laughter and more levity to the special occasion. While gathered around the dining table on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, a few selected members of the group will tell humorous short stories about Santa Claus and his elves, angels and shepherds, and even about the experiences of family and friends during Christmas.

With these funny Christmas stories, a few rules must be observed so that everybody can enjoy the tall tales. Keep in mind that Christmas is supposed to be a happy occasion so it is important to respect other people’s sensibilities especially about the beloved Christmas characters. For example, the funny short stories must not touch on sexual subjects since kids are around – perhaps, these kinds of jokes can be saved for when the kids are asleep.

It is also important to remember that Christmas is also a special religious occasion for many Christians. You will want to avoid making fun of certain religious symbols and icons (i.e., crosses, saints and Christ) unless you are absolutely sure that everybody within earshot of your irreverent funny Christmas stories sees these tales as just that – jokes that are designed to elicit laughter, not raise hackles. Otherwise, just avoid telling these tales to preserve the peace and goodwill of the season.

What are the benefits of sharing funny Christmas stories, you may ask? After all, there are already songs and dances, food and drinks, and other traditions that make Christmas fun so there seems to be no need to add more to the season. Well, shared laughter strengthens relationships among parents and their children, among friends and acquaintances, and among husbands and wives – and isn’t Christmas all about strengthening the family and the community? So, share your funny Christmas-themed stories at the dinner table and watch how love, peace and goodwill flow among family and friends.

CoachTube Presents Alabama Insider Featuring: Turning of the Tide: How Alabama’s 2008 season changed college football

The 2008 Alabama Crimson Tide team doesn’t have its name plastered across the walls of Alabama’s multi-million dollar football facility, but without the foundation built by that team, many of the championships that now decorate those walls may never have come to Tuscaloosa. It was a season that ended in bitter disappointment with a heartbreaking loss to the eventual national champions led by a legendary quarterback. That disappointment would become the fuel that drove Nick Saban’s program to its first national championship in 17 years. [Video below]

HitchFit Healthiest Restaurant Menus

The 10 Healthiest Restaurant Menus

When you’re on a diet or going through a lifestyle change, going out to eat at a restaurant can be a worrisome experience. There is no worse feeling than having to sweat over a menu not knowing what to order, let alone making the ultimate decision to eat healthy when you go out. You want to be able to go out and enjoy being with friends, but not derail your lifestyle change. This is possible, but you’ll need a healthy game plan to keep your diet on track!!
Are You Ready To Lose Weight? Click Here to Get Started Today!

The healthy game plan we’ve designed comes in two parts. The first part our healthy restaurant guide is identifying restaurants that have an abundance of healthy options. To do this, we like to use a site that has a listing of nutritional facts from an array of different restaurants. The second part of the healthy game plan is to identify what is or isn’t a part of your diet. This comes in handy if the nutritional facts for a restaurant aren’t available. Try to follow general health rules such as:
  • Always grilled food instead fried food
  • Fruit or steamed vegetables instead of carbohydrate-heavy French fries and pasta
  • Smaller portions or splitting a dish with someone
  • Lastly, if available, items from health-conscious menu sections
To help ease some stress when ordering out, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 healthiest restaurant menus along with a healthy game plan of how to order for each one.
1. Red Lobster (believe it or not!!)
This fresh seafood establishment is known for the cheddar bay biscuit, but at 150 calories per biscuit, its best to avoid these altogether (in fact, at any restaurant, avoid the bread basket!!). Instead, steer your eyes toward Red Lobster’s Lighthouse Menu items; the omega 3 rich tilapia with broccoli is a safe bet. As a general rule, dodge dishes labeled “crispy”—that translates to deep fried!! That’s a no-no!!
2. Subway
There is a reason why so many athletes serve as spokesmen and -women for subway. The deli sub chain has an abundance of healthy meal options along with a handy meal builder available on their site to aid you. As a general rule, dodge any sub with meats other than turkey, chicken, ham or roast beef. Fill any sub sandwich with veggies and remember that cheese and condiments add calories—use sparingly, if at all!
3. Chick-Fil-A
As the clear front runner of fast food chicken restaurants, Chick-Fil-A has only one menu item that breaks 500 calories—that item being the 530 calorie sausage biscuit. Believe it or not, Chick-Fil-A’s char-grilled chicken sandwich paired with a fruit cup totals out at 360 calories. As a general rule, opt for the fruit cup or side salad over the waffle fries.
4. Applebee’s
Headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas, Applebee’s has two notable sections of their menu titled “Under 550 Calories” and “Weight Watchers”. As a general rule, stick to these two sections as the rest of the menu is riddled with unhealthy menu items.
5. Noodles & Co.
Offering the dishes inspired by Asian, Mediterranean, and American cuisine, Noodles & Co. offers a handy cheat sheet to creating a meal with 500 calories or less. As a general rule, dodge the Buttered Noodles and Pesto Cavatappi—they are the most calorie heavy at 460 each.
6. Seasons 52
Known for the freshness of their menu, Seasons 52 offers large variety of healthy grilled menu itemsthat are always a good decision when trying to lose weight. As a general rule, dodge the squash trio as a side—it is the only side item that is over 200 calories. The grilled boneless Rainbow Trout is a safe choice at 430 calories. Plus, it’s delicious and fresh!
7. Panda Express
This Americanized Chinese fast food restaurant has menu options that are healthy, but they can be extra friendly with their portions. So as a general rule, dodge the orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken or anything with pork. The broccoli beef is a safe choice—just be sure to have them cut your steamed rice to a third of a portion.
8. Yard House
This upscale-casual restaurant can be extra tempting with its huge beer selection. But avoid those enticing suds and order the Seared Ahi Caesar with dressing on the side! At 380 calories, you’ll stay on track with no worries. For more options, Yard House’s nutritional guide is available here.
9. Chipotle
For many, Chipotle is an addiction, and an unhealthy one at that. Luckily, every menu item is customizable. The key to sticking to the healthy game plan here is to choose the right combination. Thanks to Chipotle’s menu calculator, this is an easy task. A healthy combination we like is three crispy tacos with carnitas, black beans, lettuce, and fresh salsa. As a general rule dodge, the carb-loaded tortilla, rice, sour cream and cheese!!
10. Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue
As two Kansas City natives, we gotta have our barbecue!! So we couldn’t make a list without featuring some of KC’s finest. Barbecue in general isn’t the healthiest of cuisines, but Jack Stack offers healthy menu items. The smoked turkey sandwich is a great healthy option, but you’ll need to modify it some: Hold the fries and order the vegetable kabob in its place. At 470 calories, you can enjoy some barbecue (just be sure to go light on the sauce!!).
To stay on track with your healthy lifestyle change, you have to be conscious about everything you eat. With this healthy restaurant game plan, you should have no fear about eating anywhere other than home. Just be sure to follow the general rules. If done properly, you can achieve that transformation you’ve always dreamed of!!

Furthermore, particular gatherings have an expanded danger of suicide, including American Indian and Alaskan Native, Asian American, lesbian, gay, promiscuous, and transgender youth.
