Shepherd Rams Deliver Doubleheader Setback to Bowie State Lady Bulldogs

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State softball suffered a non-conference doubleheader home loss to Shepherd by scores of 5-1 and 12-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Cassandra Clayborne (Damascus, Md.) led the Lady Bulldogs with three hits over two games and senior Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Md.) added a pair of hits.

The Rams were led by Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md.) with five hits and four RBI in seven at bats. Kass Taylor (Huntington, Md.) and Elisa Orlandi (Owings, Md.) recorded four hits apiece of the two-game sweep while Jess Mason (Martinsburg, W.Va.) added a pair of hits on the afternoon. Shepherd cleared the Lady Bulldogs’ fence three times with Snyder, Taylor and Rubie Tefeteller (Camp Hill, Pa.) pounding those.

Shepherd got the board first in game one following a Snyder double to left that scored Mason to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Bowie State’s Lewis singled to right center in the bottom of the 1st inning to push Clayborne across the dish to tie the game at 1-all.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Shepherd’s Mason led off with a fly out to right. Taylor stepped up and stroked a double to center and Snyder followed with a two-run blast to left field that gave the Rams a 3-1 advantage.

Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va.) began the Shepherd 5th inning with a double into left center and later advance to third on a wild pitch. Taylor hit a sacrifice to left, scoring Witt.

The Rams pushed their final run of game one across the dish in the top of the 7th inning after another Taylor double that scored Jennifer Schofield (Forest Hill, Md.).

Game two began with a scoreless 1st inning by both teams. Shepherd (14-18) drilled Bowie State freshman pitcher Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) for four runs on six hits in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 4-0 advantage.

With two outs in the top of the 4th inning, Mason reached on a single to left and then stole second. Taylor followed up with a two-run shot to left that pushed the Rams lead to 6-0.

Shepherd erupted for six runs on six hits in the top of the 7th inning to extend the Rams lead to a really comfortable 12-0.

Bowie State (7-25) travel to West Chester (Pa.) University for its final set of non-conference games on Wednesday (4/9). The Lady Bulldogs conclude the 2014 season at home on Saturday (4/11) hosting the Lady Bears of Shaw University on Senior Day.

D.C. Divas Come Up Short in Season Opener, 36-32

Boston, MA – In one of the best rivalries in women’s football, the Boston Militia have had a decided edge lately over the D.C. Divas.

On Saturday night, the Militia maintained their upper hand in the series…but barely.

The Boston Militia (1-0) intercepted a pass by Divas quarterback Allyson Hamlin with 57 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 36-32 victory. The D.C. Divas (0-1) lost their ninth straight game to the Militia, but almost all of their losses have been close, exciting, competitive contests.

This one could hardly have been closer.

Boston seemed to be easily in control of the game at the start. The Militia got on the board first with a long 48-yard touchdown run. After a muffed return on the following kickoff, the Divas quickly fumbled the ball to give Boston possession with great field position and a 6-0 lead.

Yet D.C. showed that 2014 would be a new season at that point. Safi Mojidi forced a Militia fumble which Desiree Abrams recovered for the Divas. The Divas defense forced a stop that seemed all too elusive in three games against the Militia last season, particularly in an 81-54 shootout loss in their last regular season meeting in Boston.

Then Kenyetta Grigsby got the Divas offense working. Grigsby, who missed most of that 81-54 defeat last season with an injury, was in excellent form early in this game, rushing 14 yards for the first D.C. touchdown of the year. Grigsby’s dash tied the game at 6-6 after one quarter of play.

Next, the Divas turned to their passing offense. The D.C. defense got the ball back for the offense, and Allyson Hamlin threw her first touchdown pass of the season to Kentrina Wilson, who made a spectacular catch and run over the goal line to give the visitors a 12-6 advantage.

Boston responded by going to their marquee player. On third and goal from the five-yard line, Militia quarterback Allison Cahill tossed a swing pass to Whitney Zelee, who took it five yards to the end zone. Zelee then rushed for the two-point conversion, and Boston led, 14-12.

It took the Divas about ten seconds to regain the lead. D’Ajah Scott ran the ensuing kickoff back through the entire Militia defense and into the end zone for a D.C. score. The Divas continued to flounder on their conversion attempts, coming up empty for a third time, but they still claimed an 18-14 lead.

In three meetings last season, Boston’s offensive game plan seldom shifted away from the running of Zelee, and it seldom had to. But with the Divas defense now doing a respectable job at times of slowing down Zelee, Boston was actually forced to turn to the air and throw the ball. The results weren’t pretty. Cahill was intercepted by D.C. defensive back Callie Brownson, who gave the Divas great field position in Boston territory.

With the Divas in possession of the ball and a four-point lead, Jenne Massie made a tremendous run inside the Boston red zone for a first down. But Massie’s run was negated by a penalty, which erased the first down and instead brought up third and 13. The Divas turned the ball over on downs, and Zelee, as she often does, made the Divas pay. Zelee scored her second touchdown of the game on a long run to put Boston ahead after a successful conversion, 22-18.

It was a disastrous end to the first half for D.C. The Divas advanced the ball to midfield on their next possession and faced a fourth and one with two minutes to go in the half. The Divas opted to throw a pass, which fell incomplete. Zelee stepped into the spotlight again, taking the ball to the house to extend Boston’s lead to 28-18 with 1:33 remaining before halftime.

The D.C. offense wasn’t done shooting itself in the foot. It turned the ball over on downs again with thirty seconds left in the half, and Boston drove down to the D.C. five-yard line in time for one last play. The Militia handed the ball to Zelee, but the D.C. defense stood tall and stopped her short of the goal line to keep the halftime deficit at ten, 28-18.

The Divas gave up consecutive touchdowns to end the first half and needed a goal line stand to keep it from getting worse. But any notion that the Divas might fold facing a ten-point deficit was completely dispelled as the third quarter began. D.C. once again took advantage of the Boston special teams by running back another kickoff for a touchdown. This time, the Divas finally converted the two-point play after the score, and just like that, D.C. had cut the Militia lead to 28-26.

The D.C. defense forced two consecutive punts from the Militia, and on their second punt, the Divas offense made them pay. Again it was Kentrina Wilson who made the big catch, snaring her second touchdown pass of the day to hand the Divas a 32-28 lead after three quarters.

Whitney Zelee would once again prove to be a Divas killer, scoring her fourth touchdown of the contest on a long run with10:28 left in the game. That would turn out to be the decisive score, as it staked the Militia to a 36-32 lead.

The usually explosive Divas offense had three opportunities to score and regain control of the game, but the Militia defense forced three turnovers on downs to seal a narrow victory for Boston. On the final D.C. possession, Hamlin threw an interception deep in Boston territory with under a minute to play as the Militia escaped with a win.

The Militia improved their home winning streak to 23 games, having not lost at home since being defeated by the Divas in the 2009 Eastern Conference championship game. The Divas, meanwhile, proved that they have enough to play Boston to the wire but are still searching for that elusive win over their bitter rivals.

The Divas next take the field for their home opener on April 19, when they will face the reigning national champion Chicago Force.

Beware of this cancer hazard in most milk

If Cows Could Talk. . .
     They’d T
ell You to Steer Clear of
     Bovine Growth Hormones!

Yes ma’am, Brown Bessie & all her gal pals are just sick about what’s being added to their milk – literally!
The problems started in 1993 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) to increase milk production. Farmers inject rBGH into cows biweekly to induce them to produce more milk than they normally would.
According to the American Cancer Society, Canada, the European Union and some other countries have not jumped on the bandwagon. You won’t be surprised when you learn what this stuff is and what it does. . .
Continued below…

The 8-Ingredient Recipe for Radically Improved health
How would you like to trade your body for a healthier, more youthful one?
By doing just ONE thing differently, you can...
Heal your diseases... banish aches and pains... sleep like a baby... and restore your youthful energy...
Age backwards... put an end to grey hair... improve your vision... and reduce wrinkles—without cosmetic dermatologists, eye doctors, plastic surgeons, and hair colorists…
Lose weight... improve muscle tone and skin elasticity... and recover your youthful physique.
Click here to claim your FREE REPORT and discover this amazing little-known secret—and radically transform your health.

This hormone is genetically engineered, which ought to make you suspicious right away. It’s manufactured by Monsanto and is sometimes called Bovine Somatotropin (rBST). It is similar, though not identical, to a hormone that cows naturally produce - another factor that should make you suspicious. The difference between "similar" and "identical" is all the difference in the world.
Unnaturally high levels of this hormone boost milk production… but as you may have guessed, rBGH causes a number of problems with the milk, including:
  • Increased levels of pus
  • Residues of antibiotics
  • Higher levels of a hormone called Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1)
Each of these consequences is cause for alarm, but the production of the hormone IGF-1 is especially troubling.
This hormone is directly responsible for increasing milk production. According to some Monsanto studies, using rBGH raises IGF-1 levels about five times above normal levels.
IGF-1 is a naturally-occurring hormone that’s found in both cow’s milk and human milk. Its purpose is to help cells grow. It’s responsible in part for the quick growth of infants in both species.
But here’s the difference…
The IGF-1 hormone in humans is usually bound to protein and thus has a weaker effect than unbound IGF-1 in milk. And please note, IGF-1 is NOT destroyed in the pasteurization process nor during human digestion and is therefore biologically active in humans.
So when young children, adolescents and adults drink cow's milk — it’s likely that IGF-1 behaves as a cancer-accelerator! The substance encourages cell division in your body. Healthy cells divide and then are signaled by their genes and hormones when it’s time to STOP dividing.
After a certain amount of time (or cell divisions), healthy cells are actually instructed to die—that is, undergo programmed cell death (apoptosis)—to make room for new cells.
If something throws this process out of whack and prevents programmed cell death from occurring, it can cause cells to grow out of control.
Uncontrolled cell growth is more or less another way of saying cancer (it is characteristic of some other diseases, too, but it’s the defining feature of cancer). So it’s no surprise to find that studies have linked excess IGF-1 to cancers of the breast, colon and prostate.
But aside from causing cancer in us humans, this unnatural chemical intervention inflicts some damage on the cows that can pose additional health problems for humans…
You won’t want this ‘secret ingredient’
in your milk!
Whenever rBGH is used to rev up milk production, the cows tend to become more susceptible to udder infections classified as mastitis.
A mastitis infection can increase the amount of cow’s pus which ends up in milk. Monsanto has admitted that their study data show a whopping 79 percent increase in mastitis in cows injected with rBGH.
This, in turn, causes a 19 percent increase in the amounts of pus and bacteria in milk.
Monsanto even admits this on the warning label for their Posilac drug (their brand name for rBGH). Besides the increased possibility of pus and bacteria in your milk, the label also states:
“…use of POSILAC may result in an increase in digestive disorders such as indigestion, bloat, and diarrhea.... Studies indicated that cows injected with POSILAC had increased numbers of enlarged hocks and lesions (e.g., lacerations, enlargements, calluses) of the knee...and...of the foot region.”
I don’t know about you, but I don’t find it appetizing to think about — much less drink — pus-contaminated milk from sick cows. But you might be wondering if there’s something that can be done to help the cows heal so that no pus winds up in milk.
Well there IS, but it happens to be…
Antibiotics that DON’T do a body good!
Cows suffering from mastitis are treated with antibiotics to help eliminate the infections. But this only increases your chances of having antibiotic residues present in your milk. The American Cancer Society and other defenders of rBGH insist that any such residues will not pose a significant risk to human health. But a quick scan of today’s health headlines will tell you that a different scenario is more likely: Increased antibiotic use in food animals may contribute to the development of more strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
This, in turn, can lead to an increase in human infections that are difficult to treat.
So what can you do if you’re concerned about excess hormones and other nasty ingredients creeping into your milk supply? Well, some folks opt for purchasing organic and sustainably produced milk.
Still others have switched to using almond and rice milks.
I’ve nearly eliminated milk products from my own diet. On the rare occasions when I have milk, I make sure it’s produced without rBGH, other hormones, or antibiotics.
I urge you to do the same. These steps can go a long way toward protecting you from ingesting excess hormones and the health nightmares that can result!
