Bowie State Foursome Leads Bowie State in 99-85 Win Against Cheyney

BOWIE, Md. - The Bowe State University Bulldogs evened its season mark at 3-3 following a 99-85 home victory over Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in the A.C. Jordan Arena on Monday night.

Senior Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.) notched his second straight double-double, junior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) had a career game and junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) fell one assist short of a double-double to lead the Bulldogs against the winless Wolves. Briscoe one was off his career-high in points, pouring in 22 on a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Wells added a career-best 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, which included 6-of-12 beyond the arc while Wilson chipped in 12 points dished out a career-high nine assists. Junior Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) rounded out Bowie State’s double figure scorers with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with two blocks and two steals.

"We wanted to get a lot of people in the game and looked at different combinations", said Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks. I was pleased with how hard we played but we still have to get more consistent". When asked about the play of Briscoe, Brooks said, "He's become a workhorse for us ... He defends, rebounds, scores, doesn't turn the ball over and he plays smart."

The Bulldogs recorded a season-high 19 assists, shot 47.9 percent from the field (34-of-71), 10-of-24 3-pointers (41.7 percent) and 21-of-32 at the free throw line (65.6 percent). Bowie State’s defense forced 23 Cheyney turnovers and turned that into 30 points and outscored the Wolves 40-32 in the paint. Bowie State tallied a season-best eight blocks with senior Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) credited with three.

Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa.) led a trio of double figure Cheyney scorers, pacing the team with 21 points while Zahir Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Amir Boney (Washington, D.C.) contributed 19 and 10 points respectively. Dikemba Amugo (Sicklerville, N.J.) was the Wolves’ leading rebounder with eight to go along with six points.

As a team, Cheyney (0-6) ended the evening with a 45.8 field goal shooting percentage (27-of-59), which included 6-of-11 behind the arc (54.5 percent) and converted 25-of-34 free throws (73.5 percent). The Wolves held a 41-37 advantage on the glass.

Bowie State jumped out to an early (14:18) double digit first half lead (16-4) and began to sub freely from that point and throughout the game. The Bulldogs lead grew to 18 (48-30) by the 3:38 mark of the first half but Cheyney closed the opening period with 12-0 run and went into halftime trailing 48-42.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 10-2 run to put the advantage back to double digits in the first four minutes and were never threatened the rest of the non-conference contest.

Bowie State will be idle until returning to home court action, hosting the 5-1 Augusta University Jaguars at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 4th in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
