WASHINGTON, DC – Head Coach Rodger Colbert has announced the hiring of Kevin Murphy as the Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach at the University of the District of Columbia effective October 1st.
"I am thrilled to bring Kevin on in this role," Colbert said. "His acumen and passion will be his most utilized assets for our lacrosse program."
Murphy, who served as a Volunteer Assistant Lacrosse Coach at UDC this past season, will continue his duties which include assisting with recruiting, practices, and all day-to-day operations of the men's lacrosse program. Last year, Murphy helped steer the Firebirds to their highest win total (4) in the 3rd year program's history, including a conference win vs. Roberts Wesleyan.
While coaching at UDC, Murphy also held a lacrosse coach position at Madlax Inc., Washington, DC and an assistant junior varsity coach position at St. Albans School. At Madlax, he coached youth players on lacrosse fundamentals and created practice plans geared toward skill improvement. Meanwhile, at St. Albans he coached the defense, developed student-athletes to compete on the varsity level, and mentored student-athletes on lacrosse and academics.
Prior to his arrival at UDC, Murphy had various international coaching experience in different parts of the world including Germany, the United Kingdom and Uganda. For two years, he served as Head Coach of the Hannover Lacrosse Club in Hannover, Germany, and for nearly three years, he was the Assistant Manager for the Glasgow Clydesiders Box Lacrosse Club in Glasgow, UK. In his capacity as Assistant Manager for the Clydesiders, he played a part in establishing the first ever box lacrosse team in Scotland. Finally, he also served for a short time as a lacrosse coach for Fields of Growth in Kampala, Uganda, where he prepared the Uganda men's national team for the World Championships and helped fund-raise for the team as well.
A California native with a U.S. History degree in 2012 from Salve Regina University and a Masters of Science in History from the University of Glasgow, Murphy also had brief coaching stints at 4 Leaf Lacrosse – a high school travel team, Yorba Linda High School – where he helped lead the team to a Sunset League Championship, and his very own Murphy's Lacrosse Camp – which he organized, marketed and ran for youth lacrosse players in Yorba Linda, CA.
Murphy was a four-year lacrosse midfielder at Salve Regina University who registered 12 points on six goals and six assists and also accumulated 64 groundballs for the Seahawks from 2009-2012.
The Firebirds, under recently hired head coach Rodger Colbert, will look to improve upon their best season yet as they compete in the young program's 4th season in Spring 2017.
