Creating a Championship-Caliber Pitcher #NFCA2017
About this Course
Melyssa Lombardi from the University of Oklahoma and Jennifer Rocha from the University of Florida present Creating a Championship-Caliber Pitcher at NFCA's 2017 National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Coach Credentials
Melyssa Lombardi, Associate Head Coach, University of Oklahoma
Having completed her 20th season as a full-time coach, Melyssa Lombardi continues to guide the Sooner pitchers and catchers to even greater accomplishments. Lombardi was promoted to her current position of associate head coach in July 2007.
Drawing from her playing days as a catcher for the Sooners from 1995-96, Lombardi has lent her valuable experiences in tutoring the Oklahoma catchers and pitchers. During her tenure, the Sooners have won the 2000, 2013, 2016 and 2017 National Championships and have won 16 NCAA Regional Championships in 20 postseason appearances. In addition the Sooners have claimed nine Big 12 regular season titles (1999, 2000, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) and four conference tournament championships (2001, 2007, 2010 and 2017).
As a member of the Sooners' coaching staff, Lombardi has been a part of four NFCA National Coaching Staffs of the Year (2000, 2013, 2016 and 2017), and 10 Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017).
A former all-conference catcher for the Sooners, Lombardi has also coached the Oklahoma battery to a combined 19 All-America honors, 36 All-Region accolades and 75 All-Big 12 honors during her time in Norman.
The 2017 season featured one of the deepest staffs in program history as three pitchers threw at least 100 innings and all five members of the staff had ERAs at 2.08 or lower. The staff ERA was 1.55 on the season with 510 strikeouts in 482.2 innings and an opponents' average of .177.
Paige Parker continued her career with another All-American season and her third straight season being named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year after posting the lowest ERA (1.43) and best strikeout rate (8.72 per 7 IP) of her career. Junior Paige Lowary transferred from Missouri and was named an All-Big 12 First Team honoree as she emerged as a dominant relief pitcher. With 11 saves on the year, Lowary had more than any team previously recorded in OU history and she tied for fifth in NCAA single-season records. Freshman Mariah Lopez went 18-1 on the season with 109 strikeouts in 101 innings and threw a no-hitter. Fellow freshmen Nicole Mendes and Melanie Olmos rounded out the staff by giving up just two runs in 24.2 combined innings.
Jennifer Rocha, Associate Head Coach, University of Florida
Jennifer Rocha has made a name for herself as one of the top pitching instructors in the country. In her 12 seasons at Florida, Rocha has tutored seven All-American hurlers in Stephanie Brombacher, Stacey Nelson, Hannah Rogers, Lauren Haeger, Delanie Gourley, Aleshia Ocasio and Kelly Barnhill. In four of the last 10 years, the Gators have turned in the top team ERA in the country and in 2017 the staff posted a 0.81 ERA which is the second best in program history.
On June 15, 2017, Rocha was elevated to associate head coach.
Rocha was instrumental in the development of a pair of NFCA All-American hurlers in Delanie Gourley, Aleshia Ocasio and All-Southeast Region third team selection Kelly Barnhill. During the offseason the trio earned spots to play at the international level with Team USA (Gourley & Barnhill) and Puerto Rico (Ocasio).
In addition, Rocha was named the 2015 NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year. It was the first honor of its kind received by a UF coach in program history.
After tutoring both Nelson, Brombacher and Rogers to successful careers in Orange and Blue, Rocha led Haeger to becoming the best pitcher in the country in 2015.
Rocha made the trip to Gainesville with head coach Tim Walton, as the two have worked together for a decade. Under Rocha, the Wichita State pitching staff set several school records and posted an earned run average of under 2.00 in back-to-back seasons. Their 1.46 ERA in 2004 was the lowest in program history. The pitching staff struck out over 400 batters in each Rocha’s final two seasons, with one individual recording over 200. In 2005, the Shockers’ top pitchers registered records of 20-8 and 22-8 and each had a 1.52 ERA in 202.1 and 180.0 innings pitched.
JOIN THE RESISTANCE
If the first thing that pops into your head when you think about resistance bands is a retirement home, don’t worry, you’re not alone. You are, however, mistaken. Resistance bands got a bad rap somewhere along the way, but they are actually useful for anyone and you can use them anywhere.
Free weights will likely always remain the darling of anyone aiming to put on mass, but resistance bands do have their advantages. For one, it’s much easier to pack resistance bands in your suitcase than a dumbbell! This means, no matter where you are, if you have resistance bands, you never have an excuse to skip a workout.
The greatest advantage to resistance bands training, however, is that resistance is maintained through every part of the motion. This increased tension throughout both the concentric and eccentric part of the exercise results in better range of motion strength and more complete muscle stimulation. One disadvantage is that you can’t perform your near max lifts.
To select your bands, make sure you select a resistance that is proportionate to your strength and the exercise you’re doing. Before you start your workout, secure the band so that the length will provide resistance, even at the bottom of the movement.
Here are a few exercises we recommend for each muscle group:
CHEST
Bench Press – Secure the band under the legs of a bench and lie on the bench, face up. Grab the ends or a handle in each hand and position them at shoulder height with your thumbs touching the front of your shoulders. Push your arms up into a full extension moving your hands toward each other at the top, but not touching. Slowly lower back down to the starting position.
Cable Crossover – Wrap the band around a stationary post or pole so that one end or handle is on each side. Stand facing away from the pole with an end/handle in each hand. Raise your arms out to the sides with your palms facing forward. Keeping only a slight bend in your elbows, bring your palms together in front of your chest. Slowly return to the starting position without letting your arms fall behind your body.
ARMS
Curls – Stand over the center of the band with your feet shoulder-width apart. Grab an end/handle in each hand, starting with your arms at your sides. With your palms facing up, pull your arms toward your shoulders by bending at the elbow. Slowly lower back down to the starting position.
Triceps Extensions – Sit on a chair or a bench with the center of the band beneath you. Grab an end/handle in each hand and bend your elbows so your hands are positioned behind your neck, palms facing up. Press your arms straight up until they are fully extended, then slowly lower back down to the starting position.
SHOULDERS
Upright Row – With your feet over the center of the band and shoulder-width apart, grip each end or handle and hold them about thigh height with your palms facing down and hands touching. Keeping your hands together, pull the band straight up in front of your body to shoulder level, bending your elbows to form a high “V.” Slowly lower back to the starting position.
Shoulder Press – Stand over the center of the band with your feet shoulder-width apart. Grip each end or handle, positioning your hands at shoulder level with your palms facing each other and your thumbs touching your shoulders. Press straight up, rotating your palms to the front as you extend straight up. Slowly lower back to the starting position.
BACK
Row – Sit on the floor with your legs extended. Place the center of the band behind the soles of your feet. Grab the ends or handles of the band in each hand, arms extended and palms facing each other. Sit up nice and tall and pull your elbows in along your body, stretching the band towards your core. Think about squeezing your shoulder blades together, then slowly return to the starting position.
LEGS
Squats – Stand on the band with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width. Holding a handle or end of the band in each hand, bring the top of the band over each shoulder. Your elbows will be pointed out straight in front of you. Sit straight down with your chest up and your abs tight, pressing your knees out over your toes. Rise back up to your starting position.
Calf Raises – Stand with the band under the toes of each foot. Create tension in the band by taking an end/handle in each hand and stretching it to your shoulders. Keep your hands by your shoulders and raise up onto your toes. Slowly lower back down.
GLUTES
Glute Bridge – Tie a band around your legs, or use a shorter length that remains tight when your legs are shoulder-width apart. Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor, bending your knees at a 90-degree angle. Press your hips straight up until you form a straight line from your shoulders to your knees, contracting your glutes throughout the movement.
ABS
Weighted Sit-ups – Fix the band around the base of a decline bench. Both the band and your head should be at the lowest point of the bench. Grab an end/handle in each hand and pull the resistance bands across your body so your elbows are tucked in, your palms are facing down and your hands are touching. Keep your hands in place as you perform a sit-up, then slowly lower back to the starting position.

How to Persuade People to Smile
| By: Kari Farmer |
If you can make someone smile then you can make someone like you. If your challenge is to make everyone smile that you meet then you are on the road to making a lot of new friends and bringing joy into a lot of people's lives. If you want to persuade someone to smile then you need to know exactly why people smile in the first place.
Is smiling an involuntary reaction to a positive stimulus? Or is smiling just something that we have learned to do when we are happy? We just have to look at young children to realize that smiling is quite natural and instinctive. Children smile before they can talk when they find something funny. The great thing about little children's smiles is that they are never forced or fake, but instead they are always genuine and they can instantly make you smile in return. Bodybyboyle Online Strength And Conditioning ServiceBeing genuine is one huge technique to remember when you are trying to persuade someone to smile. Their reaction needs to be to something they find really funny or smile worthy, and that vibe will not come from a fake attitude no matter how hard you try. They may give you a polite smile just so you will go away, but the feelings of liking you will not be attached to that smile. How can you spot a fake smile? First of all their eyes will not match up with their smile. Their eyebrows will either be raised as they smile or look similar to boredom. A genuine smile involves a slight closure of the eyes with a little gleam of pleasure. You can also spot a genuine smile by the mouth opening a little bit or a lot. A fake smile is normally tight-lipped and only the corners of the mouth turn up. But perhaps the most obvious aspect of a genuine smile is that it will make you smile in return. A fake smile will automatically make you question their sincerity and give you feelings of confusion rather than joy. This is why you always want to be sincere with your smiles. Another thing to remember when trying to persuade someone to smile is that everyone has a different sense of joy and what makes them happy. If you try to tell a racist joke that your buddies love to a person who finds racism extremely offensive, then you are not going to make them smile. In fact, you will make the like you much less and possibly never smile around you. So keep your humor and words about common interests and ideas that most people share and leave your opinions and ego out of the equation. One of the best ways to persuade someone to smile is to tell them how great they look with a smile on their face. Everyone enjoys being complimented and remembers the positive aspects of the comments they receive, so if you tell them that their smile can light up the room then they are going to want to light up the room more often! If you run into one of those people who never smile at anything you can try telling them that there smile would be much better than the normal look they give. While it may offend them at first, you will have given them an insight into how the world perceives them. In fact, they might not even know that they look so miserable all the time. I remember that when I was younger I was embarrassed to show my teeth when I smiled, so I always gave a tighter lipped smile that ensured my teeth would not show. One day I smiled at someone at work only to be asked why I was always frowning as it was very unwelcoming. I was blown away! Here I thought I was lighting up the world with my toothless smile and instead I actually appeared to be frowning everywhere I went! Needless to say I practiced my full tooth smile in the mirror after that and was never accused of frowning again. And the best way to persuade someone to smile is to be a positive and uplifting person. Those are the people who always make others feel better about themselves and feel better about their day just for running into them. So work on feeling that joy inside yourself and you will naturally spread it around - and see a lot more smiles wherever you go! Joel Osteen Ministries Featuring: Victoria Osteen - You Are a Child of Promise
The Bible speaks a lot about our words. Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” And James wrote, “Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things” (James 3:4–5). He recognized that although our tongue is a very small part of our body, it directs the course of our life for victory or defeat even when we’re in the midst of stormy, negative situations. Too often when we get in difficult situations, we forget the power that we have in our tongue and where it can lead us. [Video Below]
You have to be strong with your words of faith as well as being strong in your thoughts. And the best way to get your thoughts to line up is to release your words of faith. Words reinforce what you think. Make God bigger than anything else that you see.

Listening in Your Spirit
Just as we have physical ears, we have spiritual ears. God doesn't speak to us out loud like you see in some movies, He speaks to us in our spirit. Many times God will speak things that contradict what we see with our eyes. You're struggling in your finances, but you hear that voice saying, "You're blessed. You have more than enough." It doesn't look like you'll ever get well, but you hear a voice saying, "You're healthy. You're whole." It's just the opposite of what it looks like, but God calls you what you are before it happens. Abraham didn't have any children when God called him "a father of many nations." Gideon was afraid and felt unqualified to lead the Israelites yet God called him "a mighty hero."
The scripture says that "the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18). That sickness or addiction may look permanent, but one touch of God's favor and you'll be well. You may feel like you're stuck, you're not seeing any good breaks—stay in faith, it's subject to change. If you listen down in your spirit, you'll hear that voice saying, "New levels are coming, new opportunities, new relationships. Favor is in your future."
In 1 Kings 18, it hadn't rained in Israel for three and a half years, and there was a great drought in the land. But the prophet Elijah heard God speak to his spirit and he told King Ahab, "I hear the sound of abundance of rain" (v. 41). Everywhere the king looked it was brittle dry. I'm sure he thought, "Elijah, you're hearing things. There's not a cloud in the sky." That's the way God is. In a drought, God will talk to you about rain. In lack, He'll talk to you about abundance. When you feel insignificant, He'll talk to you about greatness. He speaks to your spirit about what's coming, but it may be the opposite of what your circumstances look like.
Elijah could have thought, "I'm not going to tell anyone what I heard. They'll think I'm crazy." But Elijah was bold enough to announce what he heard. The scripture says, "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so" (Psalm 107:2). It's not enough to just believe what you hear, you need to announce it. When you're fighting a sickness, tell someone, "I'm healthy. I'm whole." They may look at you and say, "What do you mean? There's no sign of you getting well." When you announce it, it sets the miracle in motion. Your words have creative power. You give life to your faith by speaking it out. That's what allows God to bring it to pass.Friday, June 1, 2018
