Cal Ripken Visits Povich Field

Saturday's game against the Youse's Orioles came with a special treat for Povich Field attendees. Oriole Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken Jr. was in attendance to watch his son, Ryan, play against the Big Train.

Cal also brought Lynda Carter and her husband, Robert Altman, to the game with him. Carter is best known for her portrayal as the DC Comics superhero Wonder Woman on television throughout the 1970's. Her husband, Robert Altman, is the current chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks LLC, a nationally renowned video game company.

After the game, hundreds of fans stayed at Povich for their chance to meet Cal. He was happy to oblige, but not before meeting with the Big Train's star player and center fielder Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State). Cal2

Big Train Bats Continue to Produce
as Big Train Trounce Orioles 12-1

The ball leaving Renfroe's bat (and Povich Field) on his first inning grand slam.

Though the Big Train were not technically the home team on Saturday night, you would have had a lot of trouble figuring that out. The game was played at Povich Field and the Big Train played as if they were at home sweet home and demolished the Orioles by a score of 12-1.The Big Train got on the board early as Michael Bass (UNC-Wilmington) walked, Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco) reached on an error, andAdam Barry (Cal State Northridge) was hit by a pitch. That broughtHunter Renfroe (Mississippi State) to the plate to hit the Big Train's first grand slam of the season.

The Orioles had it just as bad in the second inning. After Brennan Middleton (Tulane) was hit by a pitch and Bass walked again, Hendrikssingled to bring in a run. Then Barry singled and Renfroe walked leading to a bases-loaded single from Tucker Tobin (George Mason) to score another run. After an error by the right fielder brought home two more, the score stood at 8-0 after just two innings.

While the big innings were over, the Big Train were not done scoring. Four more runs would go up on the board before the end of the game compared to just one from the Orioles. The biggest of those runs wasRenfore's second home run of the night.

Ryan Doran (San Diego State) starred on the mound for the Big Train as he had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings with the score 11-0. He ended up getting the win after pitching five innings on just one hit and no walks while striking out five.

Big Train Win Big! 11-5

Baseball Express

Big Train Win Second Straight Behind Big Bats

Big Train players get ready for their first home game in almost a week.

Another Big Train game, another comeback. It seems that the Big Train players enjoy playing the underdog this season as they started off another game down 3-0 before throwing double-digits up on the board again and winning 11-5 against the Southern Maryland Nationals on Thursday night.

Kelly Secrest (UNC Wilmington) made his second start of the season, going 3.2 innings and giving up four runs on four hits while striking out three. Though Secrest's command was not quite there, his two-seam fastball seemed to bother hitters throughout the night.

After an early 3-0 deficit, the Big Train bounced back quickly. AfterColin Kish (Florida Southern) reached second base on a throwing error, Tucker Tobin (George Mason) drove him in on a two-out single to left, giving the Big Train their first run of the game. Later in the inning Mitch Morales (Florida Atlantic) and Michael Bass (UNC Wilmington) would drive in Tobin and Zach Randolph (Mississippi State), to tie the game at three and cap a momentum-shifting rally.

The Big Train offense continued to thrive in the bottom of the third, asHunter Renfroe (Mississippi State) and Kish
would start the inning with back-to-back singles. Renfroe would later score on a single byBrendan Hendricks (San Francisco), to give the Big Train their first lead of the ballgame. Kish would then score in the following at-bat on a 4-3 double play, extending the lead to 5-3.

The Big Train would respond to a Nationals run in the fourth inning by adding some cushion to their one run lead. On a wild pitch by Nationals reliever Danny Wissman, Renfroe was able to score just before Hendricks come across on a throwing error by Nationals third baseman Spencer Wolfe on a ground ball hit by Randolph. That gave the Big Train a 7-4 lead.
The Nationals plated a fifth run in the top of the eighth, but hopes of a comeback would be silenced quickly as Big Train reliever Ben Griset(St. Mary's (CA)) came in and retired the side in order to keep the score at 7-4.

The offense would score four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Adam Barry (Cal State Northridge), Hendricks, and Justin McCullough (El Camino) all picked-up RBIs to set up an easy closeout for Griset in the ninth. Griset would finish the night with two scoreless innings, giving up only one walk and no hits.

Despite good work from the pitching staff, the offense was the real story in tonight's victory, as the Big Train scored a season-high-tying 11 runs on 14 hits. "We hit the ball a lot better," said Renfroe. "That's what won us the game. It felt pretty good to be back in front of the home fans... I showed up for 'em."

Big Train Manager Sal Colangelo also commented on last night's big win.

"We were missing 18 guys at the start of the season. The guys who filled in played hard but we were just short on pitching [and] just short on offense," Colangelo said. "So now we need to play Big Train baseball. We play every pitch of every inning and that's what they did tonight. That's what good teams do."

Big Train Down Giants 4-2 as Kish Acts the Hero: Atmosphere at Povich!

Triple by Kish Rocks Giants as
Big Train get on Right Track

Colin Kish slides into third with the game-winning triple.

The beginning of the game was unkind to the Big Train as they fell behind 2-0 after the Giants scored a run each in the second and fourth innings. However, all that would change in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Thomas (Shepherd) led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a leadoff single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Big Train fill-in Brandon Gum. While 2-1 wasn't good enough yet, longtime Big Train relief pitcher Hugh Adams (Florida Atlantic) came in and shut down the Giants in the top of the sixth.

A sixth inning rally pulled the Big Train past the Gaithersburg Giants in the second of the Big Train's three exhibition games Sunday night, as Colin Kish (Southern Florida) smashed a ball off the base of the scoreboard in right-center field and drove in two runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Bowman (Princeton) and Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco) each reached base. However, Colin Kishquickly found himself in a no-ball, two-strike hole. "I just tried to shorten up with [an 0-2 count] and hit it the other way," said Kish. "It worked out."

"Worked out" was the understatement of the night. Kish knocked in both Bowman and Hendriks with a deep triple off the base of the scoreboard in right-centerfield to give the Big Train a 3-2 lead. Kishlater came in to score the final Big Train run on a delayed steal of home after Avondre Bollar (San Diego St.) elicited a throw down to second on his steal attempt. "Colin's a great player," said managerSal Colangelo. "He did great things."

Adams was able to throw a scoreless seventh inning and picked up the win in his first live game action since last Big Train season as he suffered injury setbacks during a redshirt season this year. "He threw strikes," said Colangelo. "He got after it. We're coming together as a team ... You just have to execute and get lucky sometimes and let the pieces fall right where they may."

The Big Train will play their final exhibition game tomorrow against the Herndon Braves at 5PM at Shirley Povich Field. They will then go on the road to face the Baltimore Redbirds on Wednesday and the Southern Maryland Nationals on Thursday before returning to Bethesda for their Opening Night celebration on Friday, June 8th, against the Rockville Express.
