Bowie State Cross Country Places Second and 11th at CIAA Championships


Rhema Ndjami Earns All-Conference Honors



CARY, N.C. (October 30, 2014) – The Bowie State University women and men’s cross country teams competed in their final conference event of the season at the WakeMed Soccer Park this morning. The men placed second overall while the women placed 11th out of 12 teams at the 2014 CIAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.  

The Lincoln University edged Winston-Salem State University by one point (59-60) to claim the women’s 5K crown with Shaw University finishing third with 95 points. Taylor-Ashley Bean of Virginia State repeated as the individual women’s 5K champion with a time of 19:27.57. Jazmina Paris-Morris of Shaw was second in 19:32.74 and Shana Brown of Lincoln finished third in 19:33.25.

BSU junior Samantha Ferguson (Newark, Del.) was the first Lady Bulldog runner to cross the finish line, placing 36th and finishing the course in 23:33.24. Freshman Treyniqua Dickey (Washington, D.C.) ran the course in a time of 24:44.24 to place 80th and senior Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.) completed the 5K course in 26:40.40, finishing in 55th place.

Seniors Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) and Crishonda Coffey (Richmond, Va.) rounded out Bowie State’s participants, placing 56th(26:45.00) and 64th (28:32.98) respectively.

In the men’s 8K race, Virginia Union scored 26 points and Bowie State University was second with 63 points. Virginia State University placed third with 95 points. The top three men’s and women’s squads received team awards.

Bowie State junior Rhema Ndjami (Hyattsville, Md.) was the men’s individual 8K champion with a time of 26:11.75. Kyle Edwards of Lincoln was second in 26:12.90 and Donovan Mundy of Virginia Union placed third in 26:14.12.

Freshman Michael Aregaye (Lanham, Md.) clocked in with a time of 28:00.57, placing him 13th overall and redshirt junior J.D. Tharpe, III (District Heights, Md.) finished in 14th place, running the 8k course in 28:04.49. Senior Sonny Hicks (Temple Hills, Md.) and junior Cullen Moseley (Landover, Md.) crossed the finish line, one behind the other, with times of 28:22.16 and 28:24.59 respectively. Hicks placed 17th overall while Moseley was 18th overall.

Freshman Ryan Washington (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Troy Jones (Waldorf, Md.) also competed but didn’t factor in the team scoring. Washington finished 20th overall (28:32.92) and Jones was 26th (29:12.16) among the men.

Bean headed the women’s All-CIAA team, which included Paris-Morris of Shaw and Brown of The Lincoln (Pa.). The other all-conference members are Merideth Alexander of Shaw, Danisha Wiggins of Winston-Salem State, Alexis Cubbage of The Lincoln (Pa.), Fanta Fofana of Saint Augustine’s University, Sarah Gray of The Lincoln (Pa.), Domenique Julius-Williams of Johnson C. Smith University and Tametris Morrison of Winston-Salem State.

Ndjami led the men’s All-CIAA squad, which included Edwards of Lincoln and Mundy of Virginia Union. The other all-CIAA members are Franck Charles of Virginia Union, Emmanuel Nelfrard of Virginia Union, Luis Neives of Virginia Union, Christopher Henry of Virginia State, Deandre Horton of Virginia Union, Marcus Nelson of Shaw and Jalen Robinson-McCoy of Saint Augustine’s University. Each men’s and women’s All-CIAA member received an individual award.

Bulldogs Place in Bowie State Pre-Homecoming Challenge

Lady Bulldogs Place Second in Bowie State Pre-Homecoming Challenge

BOWIE, Md. (Oct. 16, 2014) – Junior Samantha Ferguson led the Bowie State women's cross country team to a second place finish at their own Pre-Homecoming Challenge on Thursday afternoon. The Lincoln University captured the 5K women’s title with 15 points.  
 Ferguson finished with a time of 21:09 helping pace the Lady Bulldogs (32 points). Washington Adventist University finished third overall (53 points) and Elizabeth City State University  finished in fourth place (82).

Bowie State sophomore Treyniqua Dickey finished the course in seventh place and a time of 22:04. Seniors Kayla Watson and Rayshawn Penn placed 9th and 10 overall, coming in with times of 23:46 and 24:05 respectively. Senior Crishonda Coffey completed the course in 24:42 and a 12th place finish.

Lincoln’s Shana Brown claimed the women’s individual title, running the course in 17:58 while teammates Alexis Cubbage and Kaydee-Ann White finished second and third overall.
  
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action Thursday (October 30th) participating in the (CIAA) conference championships in Cary, N.C.


Michael Aregaye Leads Bowie State Bulldogs to First Place Finish in Pre-Homecoming Challenge

BOWIE, Md. (Oct. 16, 2014) - Led by freshman Michael Aregaye, the Bowie State University  men's cross country team finished first in their own Pre-Homecoming Challenge 8K meet held at Jericho Park on Thursday afternoon.  
 Aregaye ran a time of 28:08 to finish as the Bulldogs’ top runner (3rd overall), as Bowie State finished with a team total of 28 points.  Junior Cullen Moseley placed fourth overall in a time of 28:26, while redshirt junior J.D. Tharpe, III (28:36) and freshman Ryan Washington (29:00) finished fifth and seventh, respectively.

Senior Sonny Hicks rounded out Bowie State’s top five finishers, placing ninth overall with a time of 29:07. Freshman Maurice Rucker also participated in Bowie State’s one and only home event, finishing the course with a time of 32:05, but did not factor in the team scoring.
 
The Lincoln University finished second in team points with 41 points, with Kyle Edwards earning the individual title in a time of 26:37. Lincoln’s Federico Ghelli finished second overall, crossing the finish line at 27:57.
 
Washington Adventist University (51 points) came in third and Elizabeth City State (90 points) rounded out the men’s field.
 
The Bulldogs will be off until Thursday, Oct. 3oth, when they compete in the CIAA Championships in Cary, N.C.

Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs Place 3rd and 4th at Towson Invitational

Bowie State Men’s Cross Country Places Third at Towson Invitational


TOWSON, Md. – The Bowie State University men's cross country team finished third overall at the Towson University Invitation on Fridayafternoon. Navy ran away from the competition with a score of 15 points while Coppin State finished second with 55 points followed by the Bulldogs (70 points) in the 5-mile run.

Navy’s Josh Hanna took the top spot for the men, placing first overall with a time 26:36.55. In fact, all seven Navy runners were the first to cross the finish line.

Freshman Ryan Washington (Silver Spring, Md.) was the first Bowie State runner to finish the course, crossing the finish line with a time of 29:42.82. Fellow freshman Michael Aregaye (Lanham, Md.) clocked in at 31:00.05 to finish 10th among the individual scorers.

BSU sophomore Troy Jones (Waldorf, Md.) was on the heels of Aregaye, crossing the finish line with a time of 31:02.55.

Senior Sonny Hicks (Temple Hills, Md.) and redshirt junior J.D. Tharpe, III (District Heights, Md.) rounded out the Bowie State scorers, finishing with times of 31:36.98 and 33:37.29 respectively.

Bowie State’s next date of competition will be Saturday, October 4th as the Bulldogs travel to Cary, N.C. for the HBCU Challenge.


Bowie State Women’s Cross Country Places 4th at Towson Invitational


TOWSON, Md. – Junior Samantha Ferguson (Newark, Del.) led the Bowie State women's cross country team for the third meet in a row, this time in the Towson Invitational on Friday evening. Ferguson completed the 5K course with a time of 23:58.55.

Shawnee State claimed the team title (34 points) followed by Delaware (39 points), host Towson was third (52 points) and Bowie State finished fourth overall (110 points).

Other Bowie State competitors include freshman Treyniqua Dickey (Washington, D.C.) (26:12.74), seniors Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.) (27:08.52) and Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) (28:40.37) and junior Crishonda Coffey (Richmond, Va.) (31:05.16).
Delaware's Katrina Steenkamer finished in first place (18:01.16) to earn the women's individual title.


The Lady Bulldogs cross country team will be idle until October 4th, when they return to competition at the HBCU Classic in Cary, N.C.

Young Bowie State Bulldogs Cross Country Team Finish 11th at Navy Invitational



ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bowie State men’s cross country team competed for the second time this season, this time participating at the Navy Invitational. As a team, the Bulldogs totaled 299 points. Host Navy captured first overall with a score of 17 points. FULL RESULTS ATTACHED

Bowie State freshman Ryan Washington (Silver Spring, Md.) led the Bulldogs as he recorded a time of 31:27 and 57th place overall over the 8K course. Freshman Michael Aregaye (Lanham, Md.) was the next Bowie State runner to finish the race (59th place), coming in with a time of 31:27.Juniors Cullen Moseley (Landover, Md.) and J.D. Tharpe, III (District Heights, Md.) finished in 60th and 61st place respectively with times of 31:50 and 32:11.

Senior Sonny Hicks (Temple Hills, Md.) rounded out the Bowie State scorers, completing the run in 32:14 and in 62nd place.  Sophomore Try Jones (Waldorf, Md.) also competed but didn’t factor in the team scoring, finishing in 64th position overall and a time of 33:05.

The Bulldogs will return to action next weekend (September 20th) when they participate in the Towson University meet.

Ferguson Leads Lady Bulldogs Cross Country at Navy’s Salty Dog Invitational


ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bowie State University women's cross country team competed in the Salty Dog Invitational on Saturday morning hosted by the Naval Academy.  The Lady Bulldogs finished in 11th place out of the 11 teams that participated in the meet. FULL RESULTS ATTACHED

Johns Hopkins finished in first place overall with a team score of 24.  All five of their scoring runners placed in the top 10 of the 134 runner field. Sophia Meehan was the first Johns Hopkins runner to cross the finish line, clocking in at 21:53 to claim the individual title.

Navy placed second overall with 53 points followed by Richmond (78 points), the University of Maryland Baltimore County (99 points and George Washington rounded out the top five teams with 144 points.
Bowie State freshman Samantha Ferguson (Newark, Del.) finished first for the Lady Bulldogs in 66th place overall with a time of 31:07.  Freshman Treyniqua Dickey (Washington, D.C.) trekked the 6k course in 34:04 and in 69th place.  Senior Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.), in 70th place overall and in third place for the Lady Bulldogs, finished at the 36:54 mark.
Seniors Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) and Crishonda Coffey (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the scoring for Bowie State, finishing in 71st and 72nd place respectively, with times of 38:42 and 39:09. 


The Lady Bulldogs will return to competition on Saturday (September 20th) at Towson University.

BSU Cross Country

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Bowie State University men's cross country team opened the 2014 season at the Green Terror Challenge hosted by McDaniel College.  The Bulldogs finished in third place out of five teams that competed in the meet on Saturday morning.

Navy finished in first place with a team score of 12 points with Gabriel Collison leading the way for Navy.  He completed the 5k course in 17:04 to take home individual champion honors. Teammate Cameron Allen finished in second with a time of 17:08 followed by Bowie State junior Rhema Ndjami in third at 17:22.  Navy’s Zachary Anderson finished just behind Ndjami with a time of 17:23 while Dillon Cooley finished in fifth place, crossing the finish line with a time of 17:34.

Bowie State freshman Ryan Washington crossed the finish line in 19:37 (20th place) followed by the Bulldogs duo of junior Cullen Mosely and senior Sonny Hicks in 25th and 26th place respectively and times of 20:39 and 20:52. Redshirt junior J.D. Tharpe, III finished in 29th place overall and a time of 21:22.

Bulldogs sophomore Troy Jones and freshman Malik Butts rounded out Bowie State’s participants with 30th and 35th place finishes.

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Bowie State University women's cross country team competed in the McDaniel College Green Terror Challenge on Saturdaymorning.  The Lady Bulldogs placed third overall out of the four team field.

Stevenson University took home first place honors with a team score of 12.  Brittany Appleby of Stevenson won individual champion honors after completing the 3k course in 13:06.  Host McDaniel College finished in second place with a team score of 21, followed by Bowie State.

Hagerstown Community College earned a team score of 54 points to close out the field in fourth place.

Bowie State combined for a team score of 46 points, but only four runners participated.  Junior Samantha Ferguson crossed the finish line first for the Lady Bulldogs.  She finished in 15:40 and in 11th place overall. Senior Kayla Watson finished next for BSU, with a time of 17:17, and in 16th place.  Senior Rayshawn Penn, with a time of 18:04 earned an 18th place finish while fellow senior Crishonda Coffey crossed the finish line at the 19:35 mark (25th place).

Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs Finish 4th and 7th at HBCU Cross Country Challenge

CARY, N.C. - The Bowie State University women and men's cross country team competed in the Historically Black College and Universities Challenge as part of the Great American Cross Country Festival on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs placed fourth overall and the Lady Bulldogs finished in seventh place out of eleven teams in the Non-Division I scoring portion of the event.

St. Augustine's women finished first among Non-Division I scorers as four of their top five runners finished in the top ten. Winston-Salem and Virginia State finished in second and third place as a team respectively, with Lincoln (PA) finishing in fourth and Chowan fifth.

Bowie State senior Brittany Williams (Baltimore, Md.) finished first for the Lady Bulldogs, crossing the finish line in 13th place in the 78 runner field with a time of20:48.7.  Sophomore Faith Sykes (Richmond, Va.) earned a 38th place finish after completing the course in 23:45.5.  Freshman Leia Conrad (Washington, D.C.) was the third Lady Bulldogs runner to cross the line at the 24:45.9 mark, good for a 50th place finish.  BSU junior Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.) placed 58th overall with a time of 26:51.7 and sophomore Carissa Smith rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs in 68th place with a time of 28:38.2.

Lady Bulldogs juniors Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) and Kendall Reynolds (Lompoc, Calif.) also competed in the meet for Bowie State.  Penn ran in the course in 28:47.0, followed by Reynolds who crossed the line with a time of 28:54.3. Fellow junior Crishonda Coffey (Richmond, Va.) completed the Bowie State contingency, running the course in 29:32.2.  
In the men's division, junior Rhema Ndjami (Hyattsville, Md.) crossed the line first for the Bulldogs and in 3rd place in the 80 runner field.  Ndjami completed the 8k course in 26:52.6.  In second place for Bowie State and in 23rd place overall was senior Dana Smothers (Bel Air, Md.), who crossed the line at the 30:12.2 mark.  Junior Sonny Hicks (Temple Hills, Md.) finished in 30:22.9, good for 25th place.  Sophomores Cullen Mosely (Landover, Md.) and Daniel Ballah (Bowie, Md.) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs after trekking the course in 30:43.3 and 331:32.1 respectively.

Freshman Vernon Swanson (Capital Heights, Md.), senior Ronald Exum (Landover, Md.) and sophomore Xavier Thomas (Carroll County, Md.) competed in the meet as well, and crossed the line with times of 32:27.8, 33:12.1 and 36:54.8 respectively.

St. Augustine's finished in first place on the men's side among Non-Division I opponents with a score of 42. Virginia State was second (87), Virginia Union third (88), Bowie State (99) and Lincoln rounded out the top five teams with a score of 106.
The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs will host the Bowie State Pre-Homecoming Challenge on Wednesday (October 9th) at 2 pm (Time Subject to Change) at Jericho Park.

Faith Sykes and Rhema Ndjami Lead Bowie State to Second in Bulldogs Challenge



BOWIE, Md. – Washington Adventist University claimed first place in the women and men’s division in the Bulldogs Challenge hosted by Bowie State University at Jericho Park this afternoon.

In the women’s division, Washington Adventist outscored Bowie State 23 to 32 and was led by Kayon Spencer with a time of 25:14 over the 5K course. Lady Bulldogs’ sophomore Faith Sykes (Richmond, Va.) placed second with a time of 27:17 followed by Lucia Cortes (28:11), Alejandra Campos (29:22) and Chelsea Rivera (29:57) in third through fifth of Washington Adventist. BSU’s Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.) was 6th overall, crossing the finish line with a time of 29:59. Lady Bulldogs’ sophomore Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) finished 7th (30:13) followed by freshman Leia Conrad (30:17) in 8th and junior Crishonda Coffey rounded out Bowie State’s scorers in 9th with a time of 34:15. Ashley Boggess of Washington Adventist finished 19th overall with a time of 39:05.

On the men’s side, the Washington Adventist Shock edged Bowie State’s Bulldogs 30-25 in the two team event. Junior Rhema Ndjami (Hyattsville, Md.) continues to lead the Bulldogs cross country team, leading all runners with a first place time of 15:15 over the 5K course. Jinmi Ismail was the second runner to cross the finish line, clocking in with a time of 15:47 for Washington Adventist. Leland Pittman of Washington Adventist placed third overall with a time of 15:49 followed by BSU senior Dana Smothers (Bel Air, Md.) in 4th place at 16:15. Washington Adventist’s Kashif Brown and Brian Scott took fifth and sixth with times of 16:31 and 16:33 respectively. Freshman Vernon Swanson (Capital Heights, Md.) and junior Sonny Hicks (Temple Hills, Md.) finished 7th and 8th with times of 16:46 and 17:17. Christopher Daniels wrapped up the scoring for the Washington Adventist men, finishing 9th overall (18:54). BSU freshman Xavier Thomas (Carroll County, Md.) placed 10th with a time of20:09 and fellow freshman Travis Scarborough also competed, but his time of 25:09 did not factor in the scoring.

Bowie State returns to competition on Saturday (September 14th) at the U.S. Navy Academy.
