Grant Cain Recruiting Coordinator, Inside Linebackers Coach & Co-Special Teams Coach at Mercer University
Grant Cain begins his second season as the recruiting coordinator, inside linebackers coach and co-special teams coach at Mercer University in 2014.

In his first season, Cain mentored a young inside linebacker unit that helped key a Bears’ rushing defense that ranked second in the Division I FCS. His unit had two of the team’s top four tacklers, led by freshmen Tyler Ward, who posted a team-high 101 tackles (10.5 for loss), and Devin Davidson, who added 57 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Cain came to Mercer after a seven-year post at Coastal Carolina University, holding various positions on the Chanticleers’ staff. His stint at Coastal Carolina began in 2005, when he was hired as a graduate assistant coach under then-head coach David Bennett.

He parlayed his role as a graduate assistant coach into a full-time coaching position in 2007 after graduating with a master’s degree in instructional technology. His appointment as outside linebackers coach ushered in an era of consistency on the defensive side of the ball as the team ranked among the nation’s top-23 programs in tackles-for-loss (TFL) in 2007, led the conference in TFL in 2008 and paced the league in sacks in 2009.

In 2010, Cain was promoted to coach both the defensive ends and outside linebackers, and continued to produce immediate dividends in his assigned defensive areas. Despite suffering a season-ending injury to preseason all-conference selection Quinton Davis, Cain helped develop senior DE Kent Harper from a third-string backup into one of the league’s premier defensive players. Harper finished the 2010 season with an average of 10.0 tackles per game, ranking third among Big South players and 16th-best in the nation before landing All-Big South Second Team honors.

Cain’s time at Coastal Carolina saw the team reach unprecedented success, capturing Big South Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Overall, his work helped the Chanticleers rack up a gaudy 47-33 overall record, while becoming a perennial league power with a 22-13 Big South record. During more than seven seasons at Coastal Carolina, Cain also contributed instruction for the special teams units and inside linebackers.

Prior to his time at Coastal Carolina, Cain spent the 2005 spring and summer seasons as a defensive assistant with the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football league. His efforts helped lead the Crush to its first AFL title in the franchise’s third year of existence.

Cain’s playing days saw him earn team captain honors in his senior season at Catawba College, an NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference. During his four seasons as a student-athlete, the Indians made national playoff appearances every year, including advancing to the semifinals in 2001.

A 2003 graduate of Catawba with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Cain is married to the former Shauna Koontz. The couple has two sons, Caleb and Samuel.

Atomic Darts 15 Day Trial...

How to Throw Darts

By: James Keyes

The Grip

1. Be direct and aim. The primary purpose of your grip is to be able be to retain the end of the dart facing or pointing at each stage of throwing.

2. Be relaxed and solid. Your grip needs to be firm and stable shouldn’t put tension on the muscles of your fingers. Your grip is over excessive if your fingers become white as a result of the force being exerted. Also, if you are having difficulty releasing the dart your grip is too tight. Remember that the game of darts isn’t a game of force, but instead a game of touch.

3. Use a minimum of 3 fingers. The more fingers you use the better the control and regulation you will have when you gather acceleration or speed. However, this will make it more difficult to release the darts because you have more fingers that have to be coordinated.

4. The shape of the barrel. Not all types of grips will be functional or suitable on various barrel types. The longer the barrel the more fingers you will have to use to grip the darts. Conversely, the shorter the barrel the lees fingers will be required to grip the darts. You must not only determine the correct grip for you, but also you will have to determine the size of the barrel that’s right for you.

5. Don’t us a fist. You have to spread your fingers that you aren’t using for your grip of the darts away from those that are. If you are using your 4 fingers when you are gripping the darts the smallest finger will join the other 4 which will make a fist. This will cause muscle strain on the other 4 fingers and the result will be a fist rather than to an open hand which is required for an effective release.

The Stance

When a player is aiming, they target the line, set the dart and the eye. When the player throws the darts they need to try to place the 3 control routine of his arm in a plane of 2 dimensions.

The Throw

Be relaxed and solid. Your grip needs to be firm and stable shouldn’t put tension on the muscles of your fingers. Your grip is over excessive if your fingers become white as a result of the force being exerted. Also, if you are having difficulty releasing the dart your grip is too tight. Remember that the game of darts isn’t a game of force, but instead a game of touch.

The weight should primarily rest on the foot that is forward while your foot that is behind will adequately hold your weight in order to ensure that your posture is balanced. Remember that regardless of which distribution of weight you use, your posture must be unshakable and firm. The foot that is forward must remain on the floor constantly. Also, if you constantly are bending forward, you will strain your back. Don’t lift your balance leg when you are throwing darts. Always keep your balance foot on the floor. Keep your body still with your posture while you are throwing darts.

Domestic Violence: The Fact Behind The Myths and Victims and police concerned about domestic violence response times

Domestic Violence: The Fact Behind The Myths

Domestic Violence is one of today's most common assault type crimes. It seems as if almost everyone either knows someone who was, or is a victim of domestic violence. Or, they either are, or were a victim themselves. There are a lot of myths associated with domestic violence that unfortunately are grossly misleading. In this article, I am going to address some of those myths and attempt to set the record straight.

"Domestic Abusers are extremely violent people"

Though some domestic abusers are extremely violent people, they are actually the minority. Most of the domestic abusers we arrested never resisted or fought with us. Why? Because domestic abuse isn't about violence it's about control. The abuser wants to control their victim, and this control is enforced through physical violence, but the underlining fact is control. This is why they will not fight with the police, because they know they will not gain the control. Another example is say the abuser is at work, and his superior (who may even be a woman) asks him to do something that he may not want to do. He doesn't beat the superior up because he doesn't have the control. Yet at home, behind closed doors, he wants and gains the control. This is a difficult concept for many to understand. To help explain this better I have listed a few common control issues found in domestic abusers.
  • Monitoring the victim's comings and goings in great detail.
  • Isolating the victim from family or friends.
  • Discouraging the victim from working, joining organizations, attending school, or leaving the house.
  • Constantly accusing the victim of being unfaithful.
  • Belittling or humiliating the victim.
  • Controlling all finances and forcing the victim to account for what they spend in detail.
  • Destroying personal property or sentimental items.
  • Threatening to leave with the children or saying they will never see the children again.
As you can see domestic violence is a control issue. Actually the psychological damage done by this type of behavior is much greater then the actual physical abuse.
"Domestic Violence only happens to poor people.
"Domestic Violence has no boundaries; it affects all levels of income. I had a one case where the domestic abuser was an educated male who made a six figure income. His victim (former live in girlfriend) was an educated female who made a nice income herself. They both had good jobs, and lived in an expensive condo. Well he had beaten her so badly that she was hospitalized with a closed head injury. Talking with her later she stated that she could not believe she found herself in this situation. She stated that her abuser was a white collar worker who actually appeared on the outside to be a harmless geek. In fact, her friends couldn't believe he was capable of this. A few days later we were called back to the residence to stand by as peace officers, while the woman packed up her stuff and moved out. During the time that we were there, I noticed how she couldn't stop trembling. She was so afraid that her abuser would come back, and attack her while she was there. This was to spite the fact that two Police Officers were with her the whole time (remember this was many days later). What is sad this was not the first time she was abused, but hopefully with her leaving it will be the last. In case you're curious yes he was arrested.
"Alcohol drug abuse, stress, and mental illness cause domestic violence"
This is not true, but is commonly used as an excuse from abusers who try to pardon their actions, and unfortunately their victims buy into this. Alcohol use, drug use, and stress do not cause domestic violence; they may go along with domestic violence, but they do not cause the violence itself.
"Domestic Violence is a personal problem between a husband and wife"
Domestic violence goes way beyond just the two immediate people involved. Look into a child's face that sees this violence everyday. Then go visit that child about 10 to 15 years later and see what they have become. If they are male, they will most likely become domestic abusers themselves. If they are female they will most likely become domestic victims themselves. Why? Learned behavior; this was their environment growing up, and to them, this is just acceptable behavior that people do. It takes a very strong person to come out of that type of environment and not have it become part of their adult lives. A child who lives with domestic violence will never forget it.
"If it were that bad, she would just leave."
Leaving a domestic violence situation is not so easy. Many times children are involved and the victim may not have any financial means of supporting themselves. Not only that, but they may fear that they will be killed if they leave. As strange as it may sound, some have a real psychological bond with their abuser, and just won't leave. I have had many instances were we arrested an abuser and the next morning his victim is begging us to release him and recanting her story. This is one of the reasons why the law has changed in many states. Now it is the state not the victim, who prosecutes the domestic abuser.
"I can change him."
This thought is the worst. For anyone who thinks this, read the following carefully NO YOU CAN'T! I have heard this so many times, all from victims who are beaten time and time again. Domestic violence is way too complex for any one person to handle, or fix. You have to either escape it, or have some sort of professional intervention. I would highly recommend escaping it. I have yet to see anyone who has stated this, ever change their abuser.
