By: James Keyes
The Grip 1. Be direct and
aim. The primary purpose of your grip is to be able be to retain the end
of the dart facing or pointing at each stage of throwing. 2. Be
relaxed and solid. Your grip needs to be firm and stable shouldn’t put
tension on the muscles of your fingers. Your grip is over excessive if
your fingers become white as a result of the force being exerted. Also,
if you are having difficulty releasing the dart your grip is too tight.
Remember that the game of darts isn’t a game of force, but instead a
game of touch. 3. Use a minimum of 3 fingers. The more fingers
you use the better the control and regulation you will have when you
gather acceleration or speed. However, this will make it more difficult
to release the darts because you have more fingers that have to be
coordinated. 4. The shape of the barrel. Not all types of grips
will be functional or suitable on various barrel types. The longer the
barrel the more fingers you will have to use to grip the darts.
Conversely, the shorter the barrel the lees fingers will be required to
grip the darts. You must not only determine the correct grip for you,
but also you will have to determine the size of the barrel that’s right
for you. 5. Don’t us a fist. You have to spread your fingers that
you aren’t using for your grip of the darts away from those that are.
If you are using your 4 fingers when you are gripping the darts the
smallest finger will join the other 4 which will make a fist. This will
cause muscle strain on the other 4 fingers and the result will be a fist
rather than to an open hand which is required for an effective release. The Stance When
a player is aiming, they target the line, set the dart and the eye.
When the player throws the darts they need to try to place the 3 control
routine of his arm in a plane of 2 dimensions. The Throw Be
relaxed and solid.
The weight should primarily rest on the foot that
is forward while your foot that is behind will adequately hold your
weight in order to ensure that your posture is balanced. Remember that
regardless of which distribution of weight you use, your posture must be
unshakable and firm. The foot that is forward must remain on the floor
constantly. Also, if you constantly are bending forward, you will strain
your back. Don’t lift your balance leg when you are throwing darts.
Always keep your balance foot on the floor. Keep your body still with
your posture while you are throwing darts. Click here for more information about Darts and dart boards

(Above) Darts BDO Ladies World Trophy 2017
Final - Dobromyslova v de Graaf
Who invented the dart board? I guess we will never know, it was
probably some archer in the middle ages who converted the bottom of a
barrel or tree slice into the first dart board and threw his arrows at
it. Dart boards were made of wood for many years mostly from elm and had
to be soaked in water overnight to stop the board from splitting.
However we do know who invented the first Bristle board, that was Nodor
in the 1930's, they were approached by an inventor who had an idea to
make a dart board from rope! It must have sounded crazy at the time, but
it worked. They took some rope strands all the same length and
compressed them tightly together and hey presto the first "Bristle"
board was born. This was a huge advance on the traditional wooden board.
For a start no more soaking and the board was self healing and long
lived. It was an instant success.Nodor got a patent for the
design and so were the only manufacturer for 25 years or so for the life
of the patent. After the patent expired other manufacturers entered the
arena most notably Winmau . And you thought Nodor was a funny name.
Apparently the name Winmau was made up from the first three letters of
the two names of the wife of the company director "Winifred Maud" hence
Winmau. Winmau and Nodor fought for supremacy in the dart board
market for many years until Nodor eventually took over the Winmau brand.
During this time Winmau came up with their famous Blade board with
ultra thin wire separators and Nodor came up with the first staple free
bulls eye dart board. The bristle boards were used in all the big
tournaments that started in the 70's and are still used today in the
prestigious tournaments like the Las Vegas classic and the British
Lakeside tournament. Then came Electronics, the electronic dart
board came on the scene and changed the game overnight. The odd thing
about electronic boards is they are covered in hundreds of small holes
for the special soft tip darts to enter. At first glance you think how
can the dart get into those holes so exactly? The holes are centered at
the base of a dimple like the dimples of a golf ball, guiding the soft
tip darts to the holes in the board. And it works very well with nowhere
near the amount of bounce outs you might expect. There are sensors
beneath the holes which trigger the electronics to record the score and
deducts or adds the score to the previous one automatically, depending
on the game. This was a great boon to darters as they no longer had to
keep score and the boards could be networked to collect all the scores
from the boards on a computer, great for tournaments. The
difference with the electronic dart board are that you have to use soft
tip darts, and the tips are made of plastic so as not to damage the
board. (Never use normal steel tip darts on an electronic board) Also
the maximum weight of dart allowed on most electronic dart boards is 20
grams. You can now have the best of both the steel tip and soft
tip game now with the introduction of the new BristleTech boards which
have bristle type fibres that can take the steel tips as well as the
soft tipped darts and still work with the electronics. The Bristletech
technology is set to dominate the dart board market in the future. So
there you have it, we have come a long way from the elm wooden dart
boards and I'm sure there will be even more developments to come,
especially with the combination Bristle type boards and electronics.
Electronic darts is very popular on both sides of the Atlantic now and
maybe even the professional game will embrace it before long.

The Bristle dart board has been around for 70 years, but it is still regarded as the dart board to play on for serious darters. Indeed all the top money darts tournaments still use the Bristle style board, and I'm sure it will still be around for another 70 years. The Bristle Dart Board is the choice of champions, the big money darts players that we all look up to and try to emulate. In the big darts tournaments the board is always a bristle board usually a Nodor or Winmau, and it has come a long way since its inception in the 1930's.
The "bristles" are actually pieces of rope tied together to make a small bundle. Lots of bundles are then put on a wooden base and compressed together using a steel ring. The face of the board is then sanded down and the dyes added to give the segments their different colours and then the "spider" or steel segment dividers are added. The number ring is put on the outside and hey presto; you have a bristle dart board.
The first one was made by Nodor, which is a bit odd as they were a company that made modelling clay and their boast was that the clay had no odour, hence the name Nodor. As a sideline, they made a plasticine type dart board, which was not a great success, the idea being you could reshape the clay to get rid of the holes and use the board again and again. This was a big step forward as the boards up to then had been simple wooden elm log ends.
Then some bright spark had the idea of making a dart board from rope and went to Nodor with the idea! This unlikely idea turned out to be genius and Nodor patented the first Bristle Dart Board in the early thirties. The patent gave them exclusive rights to make this revolutionary dartboard for 20 years or so and then everyone else jumped on board to make these classic dartboards.
Now Nodor had competition most noticeably from WinMau. Now the race was on to produce better and better versions of the original Bristle dart board; staple free bulls eyes and thinner wire shaped in a diamond shape to reduce the dreaded bounce outs appeared. They also reduced the gauge of the wire used in making the spider, so much so that the present boards have 20% or more extra space for the darts to hit.
Nowadays the boards used in all the big tournaments are virtually staple free and have the shaped thin wire for the spider. Winmau has its Blade III board and Nodor its Supawires board and now there are a whole host of other makes as well which all have increased scoring areas like the DMI Bandit that is totally staple free. All have staple free bulls eyes and ultra thin wire to increase the scoring area of the segments. The Bristle dart board is at the peak of its development, giving rise to increased scores compared to the past due to those ultra thin wires and increased scoring areas.
As for the future of the Bristle dart board, I think it is still bright, as nothing quite matches the look, sound and feel of a classic bristle board not withstanding the incredible developments of the electronic dart board.
A short version of dart rules, covering the basics without having to trawl through the small print of the big darts organizations. These are the basics you should know to play the game of darts. They are mostly pretty obvious and are common to all the major darts organizations. If you need greater details just go to the respective darts organization for your country, but the BDO (British Darts Organization) is the granddaddy of them all.
No Joke, you can have 12 in long darts if you want, the rules give 12 inches as the maximum size of a dart! Not that I've never seen any that length for sale, and the maximum weight is 50 grams. Usually, soft tip darts are in the range of 14 to 20 grams, and steel tip darts range from 18 to 26 grams, although there are heavier darts on sale.
The dreaded Bounce out rule:
The rule is that all bounce outs do not count towards your score and NO you cannot have another throw. Not only that, but if the dart falls out before the score has been taken it does not count either. I suggest you throw your darts harder if you keep suffering from this rule.
The toe line or throw line is 7 ft 9 1/4 inches from the dartboard: now where did that come from? But you can lean over as far as you like providing your feet are behind that throw line or toe line as it is sometimes called.
The dartboard height is 1.73 metres or 5 foot 8 inches to the centre of the bull
When a dart hits the board, the score is determined by the wire not the color of the segment. The dart has to land inside the segment determined by the wire surrounding the number. If you hit the green of the triple but the dart point is outside the triple wire the score is only a single.
The darts must be thrown point first one at a time at the board and in the '01 games the score is taken away from the previous score until the score is zero. You have to throw a double for your final dart. As a double is required to finish a game, so your score must be less than 40 and an even number to be able to throw a winning dart.

There are other '01 type games that require you to start on a double as well, in fact there is a televised tournament that has a double to start rule as well as a double to finish rule. The World Grand Prix uses that rule.
When throwing for your final double, if you throw more than you need to finish the game, you are ‘Bust', which means your score is void and your score is the same as when you started the throw. Needless to say, you are considered to be 'bust' if you get down to score of 1 as well, because there would be no double to go for .
Also note the score must be decided upon BEFORE the darts are pulled out of the board.
