THE IMPORTANCE OF WEIGHT TRAINING WORKOUTS FOR THE MULTI-SPORT ATHLETE

The multi-sport athlete has many things to consider when preparing to compete and developing a weight training program. Each athlete needs a program that will maximize athleticism for the current sport they are playing. When evaluating what weightlifting program to use, ask the following questions: What energy system is needed the most for my current sport? How important is power, strength, speed and agility? How much recovery time will the athlete have between workouts and competition? And when scheduling your workouts what are the time demands of this sport?Remember, each program should be as specific as it can be to the sport currently being played.

Here are twelve benefits to weight training that relate directly to your in-season game:

1. Injury prevention 2. Increase performance – muscular strength, power, endurance, speed, agility 3. Injury rehab 4. Increase stabilization 5. Increase flexibility 6. Improve attitude 7. Improve balance 8. Improve stability 9. Increase energy levels 10. Improve body composition 11. Increase mental toughness 12. Improve confidence level
Ideally, a program that incorporates most, if not all, of these benefits would best equip you for success in a variety of sports. A tailor made workout that meets the needs and demands of the sport you are currently playing should be employed for the duration of the season.
Two Killer Weight Training Strategies
For the purpose of this article, I recommend one of the two following strategies when setting up your weight training program. First, you can apply a general workout that uses 5 or 6 basic lifts to meet the power, strength, flexibility and stability needs that most sports require. Second, a workout that employs push-pull exercises, training the core and functional exercises that are specific to the sport you are currently playing. Also, this type of workout can create a variety of exercises so that boredom does not become an issue. Third, a rotation of the first two strategies; this will add diversity to your program and force your body to adapt to different training stimuli. This will produce tremendous results. Whichever strategy you choose make sure you are adequately overloading to the body part you are training.
The following list of what to add and what not to add to your workout will make it more efficient and productive regardless of the type of program you choose to follow. Your body will adapt to the specific training that you provide it so, be careful how you train because that is precisely how you will develop.

Weight Training Do’s

1. Perform Core Exercises. All sports require a strong and stable hip and torso area for absolute body strength and protection and are therefore, essential for all training programs. This area is known as the core, or foundation, of the body. Denying training to this part of your body, is neglecting the central part of where all of your sports movements originate. 2. Perform Push-Pull Lifts. – Lifts like the bench press, lat pull downs provide the push/pull effect. When performing one right after the other, or superset, greater amounts of work can be performed in a shorter period of time. 3. Perform Functional Exercises. Functional training exercises train your muscles to perform as they would on the field or court. These training movements mimic particular movements in sports and can have tremendous carryover to your sport. Make sure you don’t perform a sports skill with heavy overload, this will lead to faulty mechanics in your skill and can cause much more harm than good to your game. 4. Perform Strength and Power Exercises. Strength lifts such as the deadlift, bench press and squat and power lifts such as the push press and hang clean can provide the basics needed for all sports.

Weight Training Don’ts

1. Don’t Perform Plyometric Exercises In-Season. Keep plyometric exercises to a minimum if you are currently playing a sport that is dynamic in nature, such as football or basketball. The combination of these two will lead to excessive wear and tear on the body in the form of overtraining, decreased athletic performance and injuries. 2. Don’t Perform Single Joint Exercises. There are NO movements in sports that are limited to only one joint. Movements occur at multiple joints and in more than one plane. So, the benefits of performing multiple joint, compound body movements in your workout program will transfer more positively to the sport you are playing. 3. Don’t Use Exercise Machines. Machines isolate muscle groups and do not allow for other body parts to act synergistically. Stick to free weights, medicine balls, kettlebells, exercise bands, stability balls, body weight training etc., that simulate real life and recruit larger muscle groups.

PRO CLIMBER, PRO MODEL: A CHAT WITH THE TALENTED SIERRA BLAIR-COYLE

She’s not your average climber, nor is she is your typical model. In fact, Sierra Blair-Coyle has managed to be quite successful in each environment. While my last couple of interviews at CoachTube have focused on a few of the mainstream sports with Shea Groom in soccer and Marcus Ginyard in hoops, this one was slightly different. Although it’s currently not on the level with some of those others, rock climbing is rapidly ascending. It takes a significant amount of physical strength, as well as mental fortitude. Interestingly enough, both of these traits are witnessed across many other sports. This is part of the reason why I always urge younger athletes to expand their boundaries and not center all their attention on one sport!
Rise of Climbing
When talking with Sierra, one thing I began to notice was the growth climbing has had. Not only has Sierra rose to the point where she has thousands of social media followers, but the sport is growing around the globe. In fact, the sport of climbing is attempting to get the nod to become an official sport in the 2020 Olympics. Whether or not the bid succeeds is questionable, but I believe it certainly reveals hope for the future. Through further research, I’ve learned the International Federation of Sport Climbing has proposed the Olympic event to be composed of three aspects: sport, bouldering, and speed.

A Little Background on Sierra
With over 300,000 likes on her Facebook page, it’s clear Sierra Blair-Coyle has plenty of fans. This large growth in following has been a direct result of her willingness to interact fans and reach the upper ranks of the climbing community. In a sport that allows you to participate in some unique locations, fans are always looking forward to following along with her next endeavor. Back in 2012, NFL star Jacoby Jones described the Ravens’ locker room culture by stating, “Work hard, be hungry and stay humble.” Based on my knowledge of Sierra, I’d say she fits all three phases of this. She continuously trains rigorously to be the best she can. She knows there is more to come and the road doesn’t stop now. Lastly, she isn’t afraid to recognize how she got started and show respect to all those cheering for her. Just as the Ravens ended up reaching their final goal by winning the Super Bowl, I believe Sierra will go down as one of the most well-known climbers in the world.
INTERVIEW
I had a chance to catch up with Sierra and discuss how she got into climbing and where she sees the sport going in the future.
Brandon Ogle: How did you get started with climbing and when did you begin to realize that you wanted to work towards climbing professionally?
Sierra Blair-Coyle: I tried climbing for the first time when I was 8 years old at an outdoor mall by my house. I immediately fell in love with climbing and told my parents that I wanted to compete in climbing and become a professional rock climber! In a way, I always wanted to be professional. However, as time progressed and I continued to improve, I saw my dreams becoming reality.
BO: What does the normal training routine look like for a climber?
SBC: Everyone has a different training routine, and I know mine is constantly changing! I am always trying to tweak it to make it better. Right now, I climb 3 days on, take a rest day, then repeat the 3 day cycle. On 2 of the 3 climbing days I also strength train.
BO: Just as regular, consistent strength training is vital for climbers, so is the correct diet. Could you breakdown that aspect of your training?
SBC: My diet is simple, I eat fruits, vegetables, and lean meats!
BO: Since you are technically a student athlete at ASU with your climbing career, could you give our readers a picture of how you manage this busy lifestyle?
SBC: Luckily my senior year at ASU has been more manageable so far, but it is still a very busy time for me. I take as many online classes as possible and schedule my in-person classes on the same day or days. This helps me focus on climbing while also balancing school.
BO: Every sport has their own potential injury risks. What are some of the typical ones, as well as some more serious potential injuries, that climbers have to be aware of?
SBC: The main injuries in climbing are finger injuries because you are putting so much stress on them. Luckily, you can do many preventative exercises that help keep your fingers healthy. In reality, the majority of the injuries that climbers sustain are not life-threatening.
BO: Could you describe how your social media presence has enhanced your climbing career in terms of sponsorship opportunities, etc.?
SBC: Social media has been a fun way for me to show people my life and some of my adventures. I love being able to share what I am doing with people because I know how awesome it is when you find an inspiring person to follow on social media!
BO: Along with competing in rock climbing, do you or have you done in the past any other sports to complement your climbing aspirations?
SBC: I participated in other sports when I was younger, but climbing was always the sport that stuck for me!
BO: Despite climbing’s recent growth, it still trails other mainstream sports, like football and basketball, in popularity. Do you envision it continuing to garner more and more interest from younger kids or even potentially becoming an Olympic sport?
SBC: I know climbing will continue to grow, which is exciting to see. So much has changed since I started climbing and I always enjoy seeing so many new people enter the sport.
BO: Every athlete understands the need to put all anxiety behind them when it comes time to compete. How do you stay calm in the moment, even when competing in a big event?
SBC: I treat a competition like it’s another day in the gym. I want to do well of course, but I like to put myself in the mindset of where I am most comfortable, which is with my friends in Arizona. I think about how much fun I have sessioning with my friends and the hard problems we try and send. That is definitely my competition strategy, to just climb like I do when I am back home!
BO: Outside of the climbing community, who are some of your biggest inspirations from other sports?
SBC: At this point I admire all athletes, I know the hard work it takes to be on top of your game and I respect that.
BO: Lastly, in your own personal opinion, what would you consider to be the most enjoyable and most difficult aspects of climbing professionally?
SBC: Meeting people and seeing amazing places have been the most enjoyable aspects of climbing professionally. As far as the most difficult aspects, training can be draining! But you keep doing it because you love it and hard work is what makes you better!
I’d like to thank Sierra for participating in this interview and continue to wish her the best on her future aspirations.

Quiksilver and Billabong Sponsor the Pro Tour

By: Charlotte Green

The ASP surfing tour goes all over the world having events at all the best surfing spots across the world from Australia to Hawaii. Different legs of the tour are sponsored by different top surfing companies including Quiksilver and Billabong.

Gold Coast, Queensland- Australia –Event Quiksilver Pro

Australia and surfing are 2 words that you often see together, surfing seems to embody the way of life, the ASP surfing tour stops off here every year to make the most of the fantastic waves and to soak up some of that relaxed Aussie vibe. This leg of the tour is sponsored by Quiksilver,

Bells Beach, Victoria –Australia - Event Rip Curl Pro

On the Southern Coast of Australia this spot is an excellent place to take in the surf competition the weather is idealperfect for the tourist. The event takes place in and around Torquay, Victoria which is a town of significant residential areas built up over the last 50 years.

Santa Catarina, Brazil – Santa Catarina Pro

The competition will be held at the beach of Florianopolis which is believed to have the most consistent waves in the region and therefore is a brilliant place to hold the competition, this event is sure to draw in massive crowds and a good party.

Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa –Event Billabong Pro

South Africa has long been a destination of choice for surfers across the world, the great weather and surf has meant that people will travel from all over just to surf this spot. The Billabong Pro ASP World Tour is held at Jeffrey’s Bay every July and is a huge worldwide event.

Master any Skill with our Internationally Accredited Professional Diploma.

Teahupoo,Taiarapu-Tahiti – Event Billabong Pro Teahupoo

The event takes place in Teahupoo and the waves are formed by a reef which the surfers drop in over. The reef is off the south-west of Tahiti, it has produced some of the biggest waves in the world and the record for biggest wave ever ridden took place there.

Trestles,California-USA – Event Hurley Pro

California has a huge history of surfing and it would be wrong to have a surfing tour without at least one stop there. The event is held in the Lower Trestles part of these great surfing spots because of the most consistent waves, the event draws huge crowds and encourages tourism in this area.

South West Coast-France –Event Quiksilver Pro France

Ahh the first of two surfing events in Europe, this event takes place on the west coast of France, it has good waves and attracts huge crowds of spectators.

Peniche-Portugal – Event Rip Curl Pro

Elected to be included in the 2009 ASP tour by the surfing community this is a new beach for the surfers to get to grips with. The waves reach towering heights and challenge the surfers nerve as much as their skills, making this a spectacular event to watch.

Puerto Rico – Event Rip Curl Search

This event is part of the Rip Curl search that aims to find different locations every year to challenge the surfers abilities to adapt. Of course many of the pro surfers will have surfed pretty much all the top beaches in the world but anything can happen on event day.

Banzai Pipeline,Oahu-Hawaii – Event Billabong Pipe Masters

It would not be a surfing world tour without an event in Hawaii and what an event, the pipe master really sorts the weak from the strong. This competition involves dropping into some of the biggest waves in the world and surfing through the pipe and staying on your board becomes all the more important because of the unforgiving reef beneath the waves. The final and most prestigious event of the ASP Tour is always well attended and is a true spectacle.

Surfing on US Sports Net! Pipeline/Backdoor and 2018 Starts Out Surfingly

A quick surf check yesterday at Banzai Pipeline and Backdoor. Music: Surf Report - Ace Of Spades (Motörhead Surf Instrumental Cover)

2018 Starts Out Surfingly

After a slow end to 2017, the new year's surf gets off to an above average start

Don't know about you, but New Year's Day sure feels like it was months ago, not just a touch over three weeks past. While 2017 as a whole had many memorable moments, the closing month of December was generally lacking for memorable swell events across the US. But that all changed once the calendar;flipped to 2-0-1-8.
Here's a look at the numbers from around the country over the first half, of the first month, of the new year. With weak La Nina conditions in place, we could compare this month's activity to the six previous weak La Nina seasons in our 30+ year report database. But as you can see below, the first few weeks of the month stood out on both coasts, but for different reasons, no matter what years you use to compare.

Get 10% off Domains from Yahoo Small Business! Use code DOMAIN10.

EAST COAST

Cold is probably the best way to describe the East Coast the first half of January as the northern portion of the East Coast spent half of the days below the freezing line. Even Florida received snow -- on more than one occasion. But with the record-breaking cold came waves, and plenty of them. While January is usually one of the slowest months of the year for surf in most regions, that was not the case over the start of the new year.

As you can see above, most zones came in well above the average surf height first half of the month but the number of 'fair or better' condition days was lower than one would hope with all that surf in the water. This was due to the strong fronts and powerful coastal storms (like Grayson) that brought elevated winds along with the winter weather and bone-chilling cold. The number of favorable condition days was actually well above average as well but this had more to do with prior years often having sub-par surf, meaning even offshore winds don't make knee high waves 'fair or better.'

WEST COAST

On the West Coast, unfortunately, the final month of 2017 will be remembered for the wildfires that plagued Southern California. Those fires were eventually contained, allowing all to enjoy the benefits of the of the conditions that exacerbated the fires, the offshore winds. But the memory of the fires was quickly rehashed as a storm impacted the region, bringing much-needed rain to the state during the second week of the month. Problem was, the wildfires had burned the ground bare, creating hazardous flooding and mudslides atop the recently scorched earth. Mudslides decimated the town of Montecito, and not only did the rains generate the usual no-surfing-for-72hrs warnings for SoCal, the rain and mud combo shut down beaches of Santa Barbara and Ventura -- during pumping WNW swell, nonetheless.

The wave heights on the West Coast were not as far above climatology as we saw over on the East Coast the first half of January but the early days stood out in other ways. Central and NorCal were a bit above normal in surf height and the number of days over chest high, while SoCal was a touch below their usual January start with regard to surf height and half the usual number of days over chest high. What stood out on the West Coast were the conditions over the first half of the month. Multiple offshore day runs bookended the storm that moved through during the second week of the month. Most of the indicator spots analyzed saw at least two-thirds of the days with 'fair or better' conditions. Those favorable conditions made sure any surf in the water didn't go to waste... unless you were looking to surf in SoCal after the rain, of course.

Who'da thunk it?

If you were in Vegas for New Year's Eve and had the opportunity to place a wager on the best surf spot on the East Coast for the start of the new year, what location would you have picked? Would South Beach, Miami even cross your radar? You might have laid a fiver down as a longshot since the odds would likely have paid well, and hey, who knows? Well, when reviewing the data from early in the month, this little data tidbit stood out to us -- South Beach was the best spot on the East Coast over the opening days of 2018. While other regions were above normal in surf height, SOBE was 250% above its historical surf height average, second in size only to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The issue on the Outer Banks were the conditions, however, where zero out of the first five days were 'fair or better' while SOBE managed favorable conditions on four of the first five days of 2018. We don't even need to bring air and water temps into play, we can just give the early crown to SOBE. Afterall, it's likely the only week of the year it will be able to make this claim. Stand proud, South Beach.
