December 17-24, 1990 - Surviving My First Round Of Chemo

Mark Everett Kelly celebrated his 29th year since his diagnosis of Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma on December 12, 1990.
The week before Christmas in 1990, I spent receiving my very first dose of chemotherapy. My doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering put me on an experimental protocol of treatment for Rhabdomyosarcoma. The protocol called for five days of treatment during the first cycle.
One of the reasons I decided to go into detail of my first treatment is because hospitals today still use the same types of chemotherapy they used on me almost 30 years ago. They include Ifosfamide, etoposide, Cytoxan, doxorubicin/adriamycin and vincristine.
The fact that these drugs are still so commonly used, despite knowing the long-term side effects they will cause, greatly disturbs me. Please look at this link to discover the over 40 diseases/conditions that will eventually replace cancer. Despite "beating" the disease, patients will forever be dealing with long-term issues that will permanently change their quality of life.
WAS SURGERY A CHOICE INSTEAD OF CHEMOTHERAPY?
If I wanted to deal with a much more deadly, aggressive form of Rhabdomyosarcoma a few months down the line, then no, it wasn’t a choice. The tumor was also a little too large to remove all at once. The hope was that chemotherapy would shrink it enough to be removed before beginning bone-marrow transplant.
Below is an explanation from the same website that lists the diseases I referred to in my previous paragraph.
"Only about 15-20% of patients will have visible spreading (metastasis) of Rhabdomyosarcoma, but all patients are considered to have micrometastatic spread (too small for detection by radiologic tests). For this reason, chemotherapy should be used to treat all patients with RMS to eliminate micrometastatic tumor cells and decrease the likelihood of recurrence. Many different types of chemotherapy are used, and usually in combination. The specific combination selected depends on cell type, primary tumor location, and extent of the disease."
Micrometastatic cancer cells hide and are undetectable on most diagnostic tests such as an MRI, Bone Scan and Cat Scan. My oncologist, Dr. Ghavimi, who designed my protocol, said if I didn’t complete the entire protocol, then I might as well shoot a bullet through my skull.
SIDE EFFECTS FROM THE FIRST WEEK OF TREATMENT
I work up from surgery on December 17, groggy, and in pain from the lymph nodes they surgically removed from my right groin. They also inserted a broviac which had running through it my first dose of chemotherapy. Later that evening, I vomited about 20 times, which was a common occurrence for the remainder of the week.
Despite all these horrible side effects, there was one very positive result. My first round of treatment ended at midnight on December 23/24. When my doctor examined before sending me home for Christmas, he discovered my tumor had shrunk about 50 percent from the start of treatment on Monday.
Please make sure you read my next blog entry next week.

Living As A Cancer Survivor - Ghosts Of Christmas Pasts and Hope For 2020

Mark Everett Kelly, seen here with his Uncle John Harper, is a 29-year survivor of Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma.
Merry day after Christmas, everyone. I had planned on continuing my post from last week on the Christmas of 1990. I wanted to say something else today, but I will do both things that I want to put in this blog today.
CHRISTMAS EVE/DAY 1990
I was released from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital around 2:00 PM on Christmas Eve. I had so much stuff sent to me from friends and family since my admission that I needed four or five bags to fit all of my stuff.
Christmas Eve, I spent with my girlfriend, whom I had just started to date three weeks prior. A death notice from cancer wasn't the best gift idea, but to her credit, it did not scare her away. I had not been home since my diagnosis, so the feeling was one that I never experienced before. It was gloomy, strange, and awkward. I was happy to be home, but this was not the same home I left on December 10.
Christmas Day was much that same. Friends came over to see me, family stopped over, and we exchanged gifts, but no one who came over knew what to say. Hope was not present. The unknown invaded our house like someone coming to steal from us. Whenever the unknown is involved, things feel messed up. No one wants to say the wrong something. Everyone comes across your path picks up on that feeling. I hope I never experience that again.
Whenever I visit families on the pediatric cancer floor, I see that look and feel that presence. Whatever you may be feeling this Christmas and whoever you are celebrating with this new year, please take a moment to pray for the other society that exists. I never could imagine such despair existed, but it does.
There are also infants, babies, toddlers, young children, and teenagers facing a future that only existed in movies and other people's world. There are survivors facing cancer returning and the mental exhaustion of what that can entail. Count your blessings, and please encourage anyone open to helping the cancer community.
LEARNING FROM 2019
Now that I got that out of the way, 2019 was a hard year for this blogger. I learned many hard, embarrassing lessons, and the timeline I gave myself to succeed following my divorce, I did not meet. That said, I did take encouraging steps in many directions.
MY PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR - YOU MATTER
May God continue to shine His blessing on everyone. If you are alone and feel worthless, shame, guilt, lonely, and like you don't matter. You do. I think the same way. Don't blame God or believe that His promises aren't sufficient. The only thing we can do as believers or non-believers is to be present. Be accountable. Be honest. Be sincere. Give of yourself whatever you have. Use the talents God gave you to honor the fact that He created you for a specific purpose that was just yours. Realize, no other person in the world can give the world what you can.
God knew YOU - how you think, how you feel, what you are sensitive to, what you are corrupted by, what your failures would be, your list of failures, lies, deceit. He knew all of it. However, He came to take those burdens and throw them away. That does not mean we continue to carelessly do those things because we know the price has been paid and covered. Much the same way, you would not continue to gorge yourself with food despite the bill already being paid. What you owe others, yourself, and your Creator - REAL. HONESTY. You try. You GET UP. You go to the people you lied to, betrayed, and let down, and you OWN UP. BE A MAN/WOMAN. Don't make excuses.
Don't allow the shit in this world and lies of the enemy that wants to destroy you and take away that purpose that can transform others - whether you see it or not. You ARE Important. You DO MATTER. You are LOVED. Keep trying. Keep plugging. Your sins, mistakes, and transgressions are over. I am down now. I am hurting now. I am broke, behind on bills, and so fucking stressed about what other bills and payments I can't make. My body is breaking down. I have to drag my skinny ass out of bed and deal with pain, fevers, intestinal blockages, etc.
The world sees me as a loser now. But I will continue to spit in the eye of the enemy that wants me to give up. That will NEVER happen. They will have to drag my skinny ass to the grave to stop me from fighting, kicking, and screaming. Keep fighting. Don't quit. You do matter. May God continue to bless and keep you. Happy New Year!

Does Over Paying Free Agents in Baseball Win you Titles - Author: Errol Marks - WorldWide Sports Radio Network

“Does Over Paying Free Agents in Baseball Win you Titles”

Over the last two decades baseball teams have paid a ridiculous amount of money for free agent players. The MLB has tried for years to keep teams under the luxury tax, to make sure the big market teams pay if they go over it. In 2016 their were a record breaking 6 teams issued the luxury tax by the MLB and still franchises have not back down on paying the big free agent. Over the years teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels have paid a massive amount of money for free agents. So my question to you is does over paying free agents win you championships? Lets check out some free agent moves in the last 10 years that has worked. Max Scherzer got a 210 million dollar contract from the Nationals in 2015, since then he has tossed two no hitters, won quite of few Cy Youngs and this year help win the Nationals their first championship. CC Sabathia took a 161 million dollar contract from the New York Yankees in 2009 and help the yankees win there first championship in 9 years. My thought on baseball contracts is, that agents like Scott Boras have tried in the last 2 decades to play the big market teams against one another. I believe the agents are one of the main causes of these problems in baseball and has hurt smaller market teams in the MLB.

The last two offseason you would of thought that general managers had a little more understanding, on over paying top free agents. Last year Bryce Harper excepted a 13 year 330 million dollar contract from the Phillies in free agency, he had 35 homers and 114 runs batted in. Giving one player a contract like that effects your luxury tax going forward for the next 10 years. Harpers contract could hurt the Phillies moving forward but was he the missing piece to win a title? The answer is probably no, Harper has 5 homers and only 10 runs batted in 19 playoff games with the Nationals. While quite a few pieces beside Bryce was added to the Phillies last season, the team finished with a 81 win season and didn’t even sniff the playoffs. Manny Machado accepted the 10 year 300 million dollar contracted from the Padres last offseason. The Padres now will be put in the same position as the Phillies with Bryce for the next 10 years and it could hurt them with the leagues luxury tax going forward. Machado last year help the Padres win four more games than the 2018 Padres and again they finished in last place in their division.
The Yankees this year won 103 games with over 33 injuries which was the most in baseball history in a 162 game season. They were 2 games away from going to the World Series and lost because of timely hitting. The Yankees decided this offseason, after being under the luxury tax for almost 2 years and opened their pockets for a ace. I would say this for yankee fans be careful what you wish for. This is the same kid the yankees drafted in 2008 that decided to go play college ball and walk away from his professional contract with the yankees. I don’t know but paying a pitcher historic contract which was a 9 year 324 million dollar contract, does not guarantee anything as far as championships are concerned. Since the Yankees are breaking records in so many categories they historically have not won a championship in now 10 years. So I ask you reading, does adding a 300 million dollar pitcher to your now loaded pitching staff worth paying that contract? Only time will tell but I do know one thing time is not on their side with the luxury tax thats for sure.

Which NFL Head Coaching Vacancies are the Most Attractive - by Ryan Hickey WorldWide Sports Radio Network

Which NFL Head Coaching Vacancies Are The Most Attractive?

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Black Monday in the NFL came and went, with one of these least active days we’ve seen in recent time. Only one organization made a move as the New York Giants fired Pat Shurmur. Three other head coaching vacancies arose prior to Monday, as the Cleveland Browns fired Freddie Kitchens hours after the season ended while the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins made their firings during the season. In all, four head coach openings were available before the Redskins hired Ron Rivera as their head man on Tuesday morning. So with the Browns, Giants and Panthers still open, which is the most attractive situation?
1) Cleveland Browns:
Despite the dysfunction in the front office, the Browns are the most attractive job because of the talent on the roster. Stepping into either New York or Carolina is a rebuild situation while stepping into Cleveland is a ready to win situation. More than anything, the Browns need a leader as their head coach. Someone who can hold players accountable, lead from the front and create a culture that hasn’t existed in Cleveland in what feels like an eternity. The concern is the possible upheaval in the front office, as general manager John Dorsey’s job is possibly in jeopardy, although it seems like that decision could ultimately be made by the new head coach. If that’s the case, the new head coach either way will have a general manager who shares the same vision, which is key to putting a successful team out on the field.

The biggest priority is developing Baker Mayfield, who despite having a rough sophomore season has shown the ability to be the guy moving forward. The Browns won last offseason and built a tidal wave of hype heading into 2019 mostly because the players knew the talent they had. Players quit at the end of the year in part because they saw a loaded roster that was being wasted by incompetent coaching. Having a leader take charge, put players in positions to succeed and bring that 2018 second half swagger back will have the Browns on the up-and-up in 2020. This job has the highest ceiling and the quickest chance for success.
2) Carolina Panthers:
New owner David Tepper is ready to put his fingerprints all over this organization and guide Carolina under his vision. This started with the ousting of Rivera and could continue with the dismissal of franchise quarterback Cam Newton. Carolina is an interesting job because outside of Christian McCaffrey and Luke Kuechly, there isn’t much talent on the roster that stands out. The good news with that reality is the new head coach can shape the roster to his vision and pick his franchise quarterback. That is a luxury few head coaches are offered, as the other three openings this year all have young quarterbacks in place that the new coach will have to adopt.

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey gets patted on the head by offensive guard Trai Turner (70) after scoring a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in the third quarter at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, December 29, 2019. DAVID T. FOSTER III DTFOSTER@CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.COM
Another bonus is the NFC South power structure. While the Saints are division champs yet again, Drew Brees isn’t getting any younger. The Buccaneers never established any sort of threat this decade and the Falcons are running it back with a head coach who’s gone 7-9 in consecutive seasons despite having a talented offense. The division, while currently ruled by the Saints, could be up for grabs in a few years, which is the perfect timetable for a new head coach to rebuild the roster, find his franchise quarterback and be in the perfect position to capitalize if the Saints have a downfall post Brees.
3) New York Giants:
The Giants are an interesting situation. On the one hand, you have most of the pieces already set in place for future success as Daniel Jones showed signs he can be the guy moving forward, Saquon Barkley is a stud, Darius Slayton emerged as a reliable receiver and the offensive line flashed improvement. This should be enough for any candidate to jump at. Why the Giants are ranked third of the three teams is their decision to keep general manager Dave Gettleman. It’s been an interesting two years for Gettleman, who has made some nice draft picks in Jones, Slayton and a few defensive players yet struck out mightily in free agency. Trading Odell Beckham Jr. a few months after signing him to a contract extension is a massive black eye on his resume, not to mention to the other free agent misses like Nate Solder and trading for Alec Ogletree have not exactly worked out.

Entering a situation where the general manager is anything but secure is a tough ask for a head coach to accept, especially with how ownership seems divided on the direction of the team. The Giants have been one of the most stable franchises in the NFL, yet it’s been their instability the last few years that has made this job less desirable. There is a real possibility that a new general manager could take over next season, which automatically creates insecurity for the new head coach. This uncertainty moving forward is why the Giants are the least desirable head coach vacancy.
