The Ultimate Rape Prevention
By: Michael Edward Loftus Sr

PERHAPS THE ULTIMATE RAPE ESCAPE - GRIP IT & RIP IT

In 1992, a burglar tried to rape a sleeping, middle-aged nurse, Curtescine Lloyd, in Edwards, Mississippi. He punched and threatened to kill her unless she submitted to rape. Instead, she grabbed his penis with one hand, his testicles with the other and wrenched them in opposite directions. He screamed and pummeled her some more but she refused to let go. They struggled until she shoved him outdoors half naked.

In 2001, a woman walked into Chicago’s police headquarters holding a pair of testicles she'd bitten off an attacker.

Abi Grant awakened with a burglar on top of her, threatening to kill her, and punching her face. She punched back. She thought she was going to be killed. When he put his tongue in her mouth, she bit it hard and grabbed his penis and dug in her nails. When he tired of hitting her, she used his penis for leverage and managed to head-butt him. He fled.

Even when erect, a penis is merely soft tissue that's attached to a man's body only by weak, blood-engorged, spongy tissue, skin, nerves, and blood vessels – not by bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon, or anything at all sturdy. The same goes for the testicles and scrotum. Thus, a man's genitalia are extremely vulnerable.

A rapist's genitalia is within reach of the (unbound) victim – either from behind or in front – and many martial artists claim that it can be easily torn off his body. However, a lack of volunteers to test this theory forces it to remain part of martial arts’ lore. Yet, if you think about it, this very same lack of volunteers makes it blatantly obvious that it's far too dangerous for anyone in his right mind to try finding out – even a failed attempt could maim.

So it's a safe bet that a woman ferociously wrenching a rapist's genitalia like wringing out a washcloth – even one-handed – will seize absolute control of the encounter. With the utmost irony, his fragile tool of crime suddenly becomes his undoing – truly poetic justice.

TAKING A BITE OUT OF CRIME
Or, if you're forced to perform fellatio, his penis or testicles can easily be bitten off. Either biting off or tearing off his genitalia will cause a rapist to suffer severe pain, blood loss, reactive shock, and panic. In all likelihood, he'll frantically scramble to get away from you – especially if you keep furiously attacking him until you suddenly flee – and the police will easily find him when he desperately seeks attention at a hospital.

If he tries to kiss you, bite into his lips until your teeth meet – chomp down as hard as possible – then vigorously shake your head side-to-side to cause maximal damage. Then immediately attack him furiously to ensure your escape.

While calmly reading this, you may feel that maiming a rapist is too gruesome an act for you. That, of course, is your decision – though you'll likely feel very differently during an actual attack. Yet you still have a very powerful option: grabbing his genitalia with a crushing grip and holding on until you can maneuver him into a situation from which you can safely escape – as did Curtescine Lloyd in Rape-Escape-Options

Who is a Hero

By: David Burnel
l

According to the dictionary a hero is: a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

For me this word has a few meanings that may relate to the official definition, but more importantly to me identifies a few actual faces.

I have personally been on hundreds of 911 trauma calls where lives hung in the balance off cliffs, open water, frozen lakes and burning structures. I am reminded of one of my very best friends from the Dive Rescue team and our annual "Ice Diving" certification. We were required annually to perform two under the ice dives and stay on the bottom for 10-15 minutes to maintain certification. Certified to do what you may ask? Certified to go under an ice shelf where the dead and dying are waiting to be brought home to family and loved ones. Certified to reach deep into an abyss alone as a single diver tethered on a line that is all that separates you in a zero visibility "black water" environment from the warmth and safety of the surface and natural air.

My good buddy and fellow diver would perform his annual dives with great courage and faith that if anything happened I would be there for him. He was right. Beyond that thought though is where the correlation to the word "Hero" comes in to me. My buddy did not like the water much. He performed his dives to do good and to make a difference because he believed then and still does now as a Captain in a full time fire department that saving lives is a worthy risk and comes before personal comfort or safety. Seeing him go into the water year after year in every environment from swift water to under the ice taught me the word hero in a more direct and less glamorous way. Doing the hard thing when no one else is present for a noble cause is being a hero in my book. Performing dangerous missions in training or under real word conditions when you are scared is being a hero. As a Public Safety Scuba Instructor I witnessed this humble behavior for many years and on many actual recovery calls. Never during these events did anyone in my circle use the word hero to define themselves. In fact, tradition is that if you are caught in the news paper or singled out on TV you may be responsible to by drinks, shakes or dinner for ALL those who were on the call. This was just another way of keeping everyone in the mindset that a "Team" is more powerful than the individual. Nevertheless these men and women in my book were and are defined as true heroes.

Another humble and simple example is the voice of a four year old child to a veteran mother "you're the hero mom." Whenever I think of this or contemplate the context of those speaking and hearing it I get a little teary eyed. The little girl is right that her mother is a hero in every sense of the word. Risking it all, committed while aware of the danger and bold to speak out the things she believes in.

Often the "Hero" will deflect the attention. Some may think this is casual banter and perhaps superficial humility. To me it is the fact that if one acknowledges the hero word, they deny all the other critical participants that were present during the mission, operation, rescue or recovery. Perhaps they just do not want to buy a round of shakes for the team. Either way the dead in many cases are truly the heroes because they voted with their life and the vote was cashed in.

As I write this at my desk and in the company of many real bona fide heroes I can’t help but reflect on my long time buddy and fellow instructor in the Urban Warfare Center® - www.urbanwarfarecenter.com - "Bravo." He was recognized for valor in Afghanistan at 12,000 feet while he and one other soldier assaulted a fixed mortar position and a bunker successfully. A-10 warthogs had attempted gun runs to suppress the threats, but because of the terrain and conditions they could not deliver their guns or bombs. A-10 pilots of all aviators are never unwilling to drop bombs, this place was hardcore. It finally took an old fashion assault of two guys with courage breathing heavy at altitude to unseat the mortar and the bunker. This kind of hero will say "I was just doing my job." In fact as I spoke briefly with Bravo today thats exactly what he said.

Doing one's "job" is fine when you work at a lumber yard, restaurant or bakery. But when you carry a weapon in hostile terrain "doing your job" means killing, saving or anything else required to get you and the others home. It is by its very nature "above and beyond."

While I sat in the basement of his parents a year or so after he came back from a very violent tour of Afghanistan I learned that he had not told his parents about his medal with a "V" for valor. I explained to them that he had been formally recognized for his contribution in a remote region of the world and he should tell them the story. Truth be told he did. He of course left out some of the more weighty parts of it as only another warrior would understand the complexities of taking lives to save them.

My father would leave our home in a little city outside of Los Angeles every day for 24 years and strap on his gun and leather to fight an ever increasing wave of crime as a policeman with LAPD. I witnessed this day in and day out knowing that he risked his life each time. This reality was brought home any time a graduating classmate or a partner of his were killed in the line of duty.

My dad is one of the most humble and simple men you will ever meet. He would never call attention to himself, especially if it was implied that he was a "hero." He caught the number one bad guy on the top ten list in the 1960s and was given a bottle of champaign that sat on our shelf for 25 years. He saved lives and dealt justice to the bad guys. He is one of many of my personal heroes.

Heroes come in every color, shape, size, gender and walk of life. It can be the civilian who decides not to sit idly by and let someone else be victimized. It can be a kid saving another kid from drowning. The true mark of a hero is the person who has a steep and deep value system and lives a life based on liberty, involvement and protection of those very rights at the cost of popularity, safety, fortune and even life.

To all those "heroes" who read this article I (we) at OPSGEAR® - www.opsgear.com - say THANK YOU and may God Bless and keep you always safe. To all those who cannot read this and are forever gone, we think of you and salute you this day.

Police Fire and Military Training: newbie rit training and CO2 Extinguisher Basics

Basic RIT training with four of the new guys

CO2 Extinguisher Basics
By: Matthew Kerridge

When most people picture a fire extinguisher, the image that is called to mind is that of a CO2 extinguisher. With their large, metals cylinders of bright red and hard horns, these fire extinguishers have been installed as an emergency measure in homes and businesses for generations. Carbon dioxide extinguishers can be differentiated from similar extinguishers by the lack of any sort of pressure gauge at the top of the tank.

While there are other red fire extinguishers that use dry chemicals instead of compressed carbon dioxide gas, you can easily spot a CO2 extinguisher by the fact that there will be no gauge at the top of the devices tank. CO2 fire extinguishers have a limited range of only a few feet and are typically only used to put out small fires or clear the way for safe evacuation of the area. Each CO2 extinguisher must be recharged every five years.

The Walter Kindle Company first invented the carbon dioxide extinguisher in 1924 at the request of the Bell Telephone Company. Bell had been having difficulty finding a dry chemical extinguisher that could effectively extinguish the electrical fires that sometimes broke out on early telephone switchboards. The CO2 proved particularly effective at controlling electrical fires, and their popularity quickly grew throughout the industrial sector.

Another factor influence the widespread adoption of the carbon dioxide extinguisher was the fact that it was considerably safer to use than the earlier chemical models. The dry chemicals that were used in the other fire extinguishers were known to cause toxic reactions in people in the immediate vicinity of their use that ranged from mild to deadly. In fact, the relatively harmless effects of the CO2 extinguisher are a big factor in the continued popularity of the device in the modern world.

CO2 extinguishers operate by releasing highly pressurized carbon dioxide onto that comes out a velocity that is high enough to remove all of the oxygen out of the area of a fire and extinguish the source of combustion. The gas that is released from CO2 extinguishers is also very cold and rapidly lowers the temperature of a fire. While CO2 extinguishers are very common in many buildings, they are not effective at extinguishing all fires. However, there are effective at controlling many fires long enough for residents to evacuate a building or for the fire department to arrive on the scene.

CO2 extinguishers are actually not the preferred fire extinguishers of choice for many types of fires. CO2 extinguishers are particularly ineffective in battling Class A fires. Class A fires constitute all fires that are fuelled by ordinary, combustible material. Because CO2 fires do not push enough oxygen away from the fire for the necessary amount of time to extinguish a Class A fire, these fires can easily continue to smoulder and reignite. Instead, CO2 extinguishers are designed to put out exclusively electrical and liquid fuelled fires. In case of an emergency, these extinguishers can also be used to save a human being who has caught on fire.

CO2 extinguishers are regularly seen on television and film as a set prop. Because CO2 extinguishers are fairly safe to use, production companies often use them for extinguishing a stunt man when he is set on fire for the scene. However, actual fire rescue workers rarely use CO2 extinguishers for real life rescues in less absolutely necessary.

Matthew Kerridge is an expert in home fire safety. If you want more information about types of co2 extinguishers or are looking for a reputable co2 extinguisher company please visit http://www.adt.co.uk

 Travelers on the Orphan Train

By: Tony Grayson

The words abandoned, abused, and orphaned do not sound sweet upon the ear. They are heartbreaking when the word children follows them. New York City was a magnate for European immigrants to America. Many never got beyond that city, which grew to accommodate them. As their resources dwindled, the impoverished immigrants inhabited the baser parts of the city, known as the slums. So many people from so many places massed together, creating a breeding ground for pestilence, which laid waste to many families. By the 1850s, the slums became the unhappy home of legions of orphans, whose parents had died or abandoned them. As the great War Between the States fired up in the early 1860s, this matter was made worse when so many men of immigrant families were compelled to enlist to fight a war in order to get money to feed their families. Many of those men were killed or maimed them beyond repair, spawning more orphans to roam the slums in search of scraps of food. Survival was the daily trial of an orphan.

An Angel

Philanthropist Charles Loring Brace founded the Children's Aid Society in 1853 in that city. A minister by trade, he channeled his beliefs and his energy into gathering resources from those who had means and a conscience and swooped up as many orphans as he could catch. But, the task was overwhelming. The orphanages filled with them. He realized that those places were people storage for kids, and not the way to replace a loving family that each kid had lost. He got an idea: Get the orphans out of New York City!

The Orphan Train

Europeans heard the unhappy news of the plight of so many unfortunate immigrants to America. Many of those who followed them were able to plan and prepare to get past the Eastern cities and their slums. Especially, European farm families, blew past the coastal nuclei of humanity by organizing themselves into traveling caravans that moved west. First, they settled the mid-western valleys, and later, they went as far west as they could on the storied wagon trains. Yet, they too suffered the tragedy of death. Brace heard stories of mid-western farm families who had lost children and of those who were barren of children. Desperate for the joy of children in their lives, and willing hands to make the farms work, they turned to their pastors, parsons, and priests. Prayer led to practicality, and to Charles Loring Brace. Again, he turned to the city's wealthy, and with their help, he spawned the first orphan train.

A Child's Point of View

Many of the orphaned children were born in the city slums, and had not seen the world beyond that slum and the orphanage. The idea of going west, on a train, something that they also had never seen, was heady stuff. They would go along with their friends. Their caretakers filled them with hope as they prepared them to look presentable and placed them on the train. The journey was long, weeks long. They ate and slept on the train. Then, something for which they had not prepared happened. The train stopped at a mid-western town. All of the children disembarked to stand in a line on the loading dock. Throngs of people were there, nearly all of the inhabitants of the town. Pastors, parsons, and priests were there, and then magic happened. A farmer's wife said to one of the children, "Darling, there is something about you that makes my heart sing. Can I be your mother?" The poignant moments were very individual, and not all of them were so touching. Older children might be selected for their capability to do farm labor, while the younger ones might be picked to mend the broken heart of a barren wife. With each passing stop of the train, the ritual repeated. Those children who were not selected became fewer in number and more anxious. An unspoken thought passed among those who were left. "Does nobody want me? Will I be returned, alone?" Brothers, sisters, and best friends, were sometimes split up, never to be reunited.

A Legacy

So many stories came from Brace's orphan trains. Most of those stores were untold. Some of them were unhappy stories. But, the majority were uplifting tales of children who were orphans no more. One of the former orphans was Charles William Paddock. In 1919, he was known as "the fastest man alive". Readers may recall this, for he was the American that British runners aspired to race at the 1920 Olympics, illustrated in the book and film called Chariots of Fire. John Green Brady, three-time Governor of Alaska, told then Governor, and later President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt how Teddy's own father had been one of the financiers of the orphan train that took Brady out of the slums of New York City. This and so many stories of young lives salvaged, were the result of the ideas and actions of a world shaper, Charles Loring Brady.

Remington 1100 Tactical 4 Review
By: Neil Dobson

Remington Arms Company, Inc. was founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion, New York, as E. Remington and Sons. It is the oldest company in the United States which still makes its original product, and is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America.

It is the only U.S. Company which produces both firearms and ammunition domestically, and is the largest U.S. producer of shotguns and rifles. After a 12-year absence in the handgun market, Remington announced the Model 1911 R1 in April 2010, slated to be available through select independent dealers beginning June 2010.

The last handgun produced by Remington Arms, the Model XP-100R, ceased production in 1998. Its products are distributed in over 60 foreign countries, making its base wider than those of its competitors.
Remington has also developed or adopted more cartridges than any other gun maker or ammunition manufacturer in the world.

Remington is part of the Freedom Group, owned by Cerberus Capital Management. The Remington 1100 tactical is a gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun, popular among sportsmen, and law enforcement/military officials.

Designed by Wayne Leek, the Remington Model 1100 tactical was introduced in 1963 as a successor to the Model 58 and 878 gas operated shotguns. It found immediate high levels of acceptance, due to a significant reduction in felt recoil, excellent handling characteristics and reliability.

The Model 58s had supplanted the recoil operated Model 11-48, which retained the long recoil action of John Browning's original design, present in the Remington Model 11 and the Auto-5. All models of the 1100 tactical are gas operated, with a mechanism that noticeably reduces recoil.

Several variations of the Remington 1100 Tac 4, in 12, 20, and 28 gauges, and .410 bore are still in production as of 2011. The Remington Model 1100 tactical ushered in the era of truly successful and reliable gas-actuated auto loading shotguns, and it is the best-selling auto loading shotgun in U.S. history.

When it was introduced in 1963, the Remington 1100 tactical was an immediate success with skeet shooters in particular. The gas-operated action of the model 1100 tactical reduced felt recoil. The 1100 tactical is also a popular trap shotgun. Versions with high ribs and Monte Carlo stocks are available.

N Dobson has had extensive training and operational experience with both Military and law enforcement agencies.

Traffic Stops: Control your Risk Factors and Don't be your Own Worst Enemy!

[Video below]-Dave Smith discusses the risks of "routine" traffic stops and the dangers that they present. He illustrates how to assess the situation and mitigate these risks.

Don't be your Own Worst Enemy!
By Marc Victor

I cringe to think how many times clients come into my office to discuss their criminal matter with me only to learn they have done possibly irreparable damage to their case. I have found few people who are aware of their constitutional rights.

Your awareness of some simple concepts may serve you well in the event you or a loved one is the unfortunate subject of a criminal investigation. First of all, always remember, you are not required to talk to the police. There may be occasions where your persuasive oral skills will serve to get you a stern warning instead of a costly ticket; however, talking with the police will rarely benefit you when the investigation is for a crime.

In addition, talking to friends and family about your criminal matter is usually not a good idea either. Although you do not expect a friend or family member to compromise your case, you may put him or her in an unfair position. A prosecutor may summon your family member or friend to the witness stand in a criminal trial and ask questions about your statements. Such a dilemma will force your family member or friend to decide between perjury and possibly hurting your case.

Don't get caught up by the fact that the police officer failed to inform you of your "Miranda Rights." These are your rights to remain silent and to have an attorney present during questioning. So long as you are not under "arrest" the police officer may properly ask you questions without informing you of these rights.

You are never required to consent to a search. If a police officer has a search warrant, you must permit the search. However, if a search warrant has not yet been obtained, you should insist the officer obtain one before you voluntarily allow a search. The fact that you insist upon a search warrant does not mean you have something to hide. Rather, it is a confirmation of the constitutional concept that police do not have the right to arbitrarily conduct searches of your property.

A police officer has no right to detain you unless there exists reasonable suspicion that you committed a crime or traffic violation. However, a police officer is always allowed to initiate a voluntary conversation with you.
Sometimes it is unclear whether or not a person is detained. If you are in doubt, you should ask the police officer if you are in fact free to leave.

If you are arrested, Arizona law mandates that you will be brought before a judge within twenty-four hours. This is an important hearing for you. The judge will decide what conditions, if any, must be met before you can be released from jail. You have a right to retain an attorney for this hearing to argue for your release.

Regarding the crime of driving under the influence of alcohol, the best advice is to have a designated driver. However, if you are the subject of a DUI investigation, you must be especially careful and thoughtful about what you say and do. In Arizona, a conviction for DUI guarantees a jail term.

Arizona law does not require you to submit to roadside field sobriety tests. Although these tests may assist you to convince an officer you are not intoxicated, as a general rule, refusing to take the tests is the better choice. Keep in mind, it is the police officer who subjectively decides whether you passed or failed the tests.
Deciding whether to submit to a blood, breath or urine test is a different matter altogether. If you refuse one of these tests, you will likely lose your driver's license for one year. You should consult an attorney before deciding to refuse or submit to one of these tests.

DUI is a complex area of the criminal law. However, like other criminal charges, the decisions you make during your initial contact with a police officer can be the difference between conviction and acquittal.

Cop helping woman finish race will melt your heart and Exercises for Runner’s Knee

[Video] At Louisville's Rodes City Run, there are no losers, not even the person who finishes dead last. Asia Ford wears that badge with a smile as big as the race itself.

Exercises for Runner’s Knee
By: Jane Baron

Runner’s knee and other knee injuries often result from imbalanced muscles in the thighs. It is necessary to strengthen the quadriceps and the hamstrings so that your body is balanced, and your knees are not put under and undue pressure.

Quadriceps

1. Quad Contractions. This is a particularly good exercise because you can do it almost anywhere. All you need to do is sit in a chair and stretch your legs out in front of you so that your knees are straight. Your heels should be touching the floor, toes pointing upward. Once you are in the proper position, contract your thigh muscles and hold the contraction for a slow count of ten. Release for a count of 3. Begin with 10 repetitions, increasing the number as the exercise becomes more comfortable. It is nothing fancy, but then there are no excuses not to do it either! You can strengthen your quads while sitting in a (fairly empty!) subway car or waiting to be seen at the dentist’s office!

2. Leg Lifts. This exercise should be fairly familiar. Lie with your back on the floor. Keep one of your legs straight and bend the other one so that its foot is flat on the floor. Now lift the straight leg until it is perpendicular to the floor. Hold the leg in this position while you count to 3. Begin with 10 repetitions, and then increase the number as the exercise becomes easier. Remember to do sets on both legs!

Hamstrings

1. Hamstring Contractions. This is another simple exercise you should be able to do throughout the day without upsetting your schedule. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Now lean back on your heels so that the toes are lifted. Note: your heels should not change position on the floor. You are simply shifting the way you are distributing the weight. This shift should cause you hamstrings to contract.

2. Hamstring Hip Lift. For this exercise you will need to lie down on your back with your feet on a step or stair that is approximately 18 inches higher than the floor. As you push down on the step with your feet, lift up with your hips so that they come off the floor. Keep your shoulders, neck and head resting comfortably on the floor. The tension should be in your hamstrings. Start with 15 repetitions.

Reporting Sexual Assault To Police STEP 3 - Emotional Support

Self Defense Instructor Exposes How To Get Realistic Self Defense Lessons

By: Mark Jordan
Not all self defense lessons are the same. As economies decline worldwide, street crimes including robbery, theft, rape and kidnappings are escalating quickly in developed as well as third-world countries. Because of the growing number of street crimes, more and more people are asking about self defense lessons. However, most self-defense seminars available are of little practical value.

There are a lot of people out there proclaiming to be "experts", showing many styles of martial arts and self defense lessons. The fact is, most of them haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. These people clearly have NO firsthand knowledge in dealing with actual attacks and the methods they’re teaching simply WILL NOT work against an honest-to-goodness criminal. In fact, it would most likely get you killed if you were to ever try such nonsense.

So, how do you know that any particular program is teaching realistic self defense? Ask!

Tactical Workouts

Revolutionary Tactical Strength And Conditioning Program Provides A Simple Training Blueprint To Help Cops, Soldiers, And Prepared Citizens Gain Tactical Muscle

The best method to be sure you will be receiving useful self defense lessons is to ask a lot of questions. Ask questions about the instructor's history. Ask if a little person will actually be able to make the techniques work against a much larger attacker. And, inquire if it includes all types of situations such as being attacked from behind, attacks while on the ground, weapon attacks and multiple attackers. If you ask enough questions, you will either get the feeling it is a good program, or they're just leading you on.

The most important question you should ask is, how much time is spent on the subject of crime prevention; you know, things like, keep your car doors locked and don’t go to unfamiliar areas alone. Contrary to popular presumption, self defense lessons should spend less than 10% of the time discussing crime prevention. All that is common sense and you’ve probably already heard it before anyway. Fact is, there are plenty of resources out there for that kind of information, if you want it. You might contact your local police department and I'm sure they can provide you with an excellent brochure on the subject.

You see, crime prevention and self defense are NOT the same thing. The truth is that no matter how much you attempt to evade trouble, trouble can still find you. Sensible self defense lessons must be based on the assumption that you’ve already tried everything you know how to do to avert an unwanted confrontation. It's a big clue that they don't really understand self defense, when they try to fill the schedule with unrelated material. Unfortunately, most people don't recognize the fraud.

You need to learn how to deal with confrontations quickly, intelligently and with total confidence in your capability to protect yourself. Practical self defense lessons will teach you highly successful techniques that have been proven to work in many different scenarios. It doesn’t matter if it is another person’s inappropriate touch, or a violent attack from a criminal who really wants to do serious harm. The skills must be simple, easy to learn and easy to recall. With a little bit of practice, these movements can become automatic reactions to an attack. That way you can get yourself quickly out of danger in just a matter of seconds.

Daughters in Danger

By: Joanne Kimes, Colleary, and Rebecca Rutledge Phd
As you may recall from your own teenage years, separating from one's parents is a vital, and healthy, part of growing up. All well and good. But the question is this: as your daughters move away from YOU, who exactly are they moving TOWARDS? And more importantly, are those people taking them someplace you want them to go?

For various societal and biological reasons, teenage girls run a higher risk of achieving victim status than teenage boys. They are often conflict-avoiding "pleasers" and tend to be more trusting and nurturing in nature, which can put them in potentially hazardous situations. Add in the general physical superiority of boys, as well as a basic lack of life experience, and the combination can be a disaster waiting to happen. And happen it does, every day of the year, in every city in America, in every state of the union. Let's break this down into two separate issues: "Danger From Others," and "Danger From Themselves."

Danger From Others
For teenage girls (and even for grown women), the primary "danger from others" will be from an abusive romantic relationship. This abuse can take many forms: verbal, psychological, physical, and even sexual. As if having this happen to your daughter wouldn't be bad enough, there is an element that makes it even worse: chances are if it IS happening, she won't alert you to it by wailing. In fact, odds are she will do everything in her power to keep you from finding out about it at all.

The reasons girls (and women) "stay" despite this treatment are complex and far-reaching. But in basic terms, once they have transferred their "love feelings" away from you and onto another person, that person then holds a power position in their lives. And with hormones raging, teenage girls often tend to love more than they think. So they stay because they love, and rationalize the abuse: it's not so bad . . . my friends have it worse . . . it's really my fault anyway . . . Odds are you believe this could never happen to YOUR daughter. Keep in mind that's what every parent thinks.

So what can you do about this? For starters, remember the adage: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to avoid a bad situation is to never let it get started. If your daughter becomes interested in a boy, you should become interested in him too. Don't let him be a stranger. Make sure he comes inside the house. Ask him about himself and about his family. Humanize him and he will have no choice but to humanize you -- and your daughter. See what your gut tells you about this boy -- and then follow it.

But let's say it's too late for that. Let's say your daughter is seeing someone and on the surface it all seems okay. How can you tell that it's not? The easy part would be the physical signs. If your daughter seems consistently upset, or unusually quiet, these are warning signs. If you discover bruises, that's more than a warning sign: that's evidence. You really must have zero tolerance for that. Don't be surprised if she explains it all away -- she fell, or got hit with a basketball at school, or walked into a ladder, etc., etc., etc. Under NO circumstances can you take her word for it. Ask her specifics. Where did it happen? How did it happen? Who was there? You want witnesses. And if she gives them to you, call them and ask. If there were no witnesses to call, make her tell her story again and again to see if she changes it at all. That's how the police determine responsibility. It will work for you, too.

All the while this is going on, it's vital you do not alienate your daughter. She will not want to "give up" her boyfriend. Keep reassuring her that you love her and this is not about punishing the boy. That they both need some help and that it's okay . . . they will get it. You just need to know the truth. Odds are you will get it!

Danger From Themselves
While it's easier to presume that the greatest dangers to our daughters would be external, the more insidious would be the internal dangers: those brought on by our daughters themselves. While their adolescence may figuratively drive you crazy, keep in mind it may do the same to them -- literally. Chemical imbalances, peer pressure, body image, school trouble, boy trouble, hormones -- these can all lead to some self-destructive behaviors. These include (but are not limited to):

* Drinking
* Marijuana smoking
* "Harder" drugs including amphetamines, cocaine, Ecstasy, opiates, methamphetamine, and the abuse of prescription meds
* Cigarette smoking
* Inhalants for "huffing" (think "glue sniffing")

Keep in mind that if you have any abuse issues in your family, your offspring are at a higher risk.

Again, look for the warning signs. These can include erratic (more erratic than usual, even) behavior, a drop in grades, loss of appetite, weight loss, a change in friends, and more/less sleep. Keep track of your belongings, too, as the prescription drugs she may be abusing could very well be yours. Missing money is another sign since drugs and alcohol are expensive and allowance was never meant to cover those!

Regardless of the challenges facing your daughter (and therefore you) do remember to keep them closer than ever before. Do not blame them for what they are going through. How you deal with them in times of trouble could very well impact your relationship with them for the rest of your lives. So even when it's hard, try to remember the little girl who wailed for you. She's still doing it, just in a different way, and through love (and some patience) you can find a way to make everything all right for her again. Just like the olden days. Yes it's tougher to resolve than a skinned knee. But together you handled that then, and together you can handle this now.

Tactical Nutrition for an NYC Police Officer and Bodybuilding for Beginners

 Bodybuilding for Beginners

By: Emile Jarreau

Every day, all over the world, someone picks up a dumbbell for the first time and begins a quest to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger. They imagine their bodies swelling up beyond belief and turning a once wiry frame into a molded piece of muscular artwork. Unfortunately, they quickly find out that the prospect is a bit harder than they first had thought. Achieving excellence in bodybuilding requires not only dedication, but intense physical exercise…A LOT of intense physical exercise. Because of this, we thought we would take some time to explain some basic principles that can help beginning bodybuilders get the RIGHT start on their new endeavor.

First of all, you should try to avoid your initial inclinations and simply start light. Most folks that start working out to build serious muscle often end up biting off more than they can chew, or in this case, lifting heavier weights than they should. It is extremely easy to go from working out to lying in the hospital with a torn muscle if you push yourself too hard. Starting off light, with weights you can handle, will allow you to make consistent and SAFE progress throughout your bodybuilding regimen.

One the next things that beginning bodybuilders do is try to build INDIVIDUAL muscles. They pick up a dumbbell and start doing arm curls until someone tells them to stop. Unfortunately, no one ever does, so more often than that, you see a nice set of guns on a puny body…come on, you know I’m right…working ONE muscle at a time is a mistake at this stage. Instead, you want to focus on COMPOUND movements, or ones that hit several large muscle groups at one time. The king of these is the squat. This exercise not only hits your entire lower body extremely effectively, it also works quite a few of the muscles in your upper body as well. No other single exercise can pack on as much quality muscle as the squat.

The next on your list of beginning bodybuilding moves is the bench press. This effective compound movement is not just for your chest, not by any means. Bench presses hit your chest, shoulders, triceps, forearms, and many of the stabilizing muscles in these areas as well. This workout can pack on muscle and make several key muscles much stronger to provide the strength needed as you further your bodybuilding endeavors.

Last on our list for beginning bodybuilding moves is the pull-up. Many folks HATE doing these, and there is a good reason…they can’t do them! Pulling off a set of 10 reps on the pull-up bar is not only impressive; it also has the ability to build some serious muscle. Cranking out rep after rep of pull-ups can do AMAZING things for your biceps, forearms, shoulders, and of course, your entire back. Once you get to the point of being able to do 25 or so, you can always add weight and continue to back on the beef. Think 25 sounds like a lot? Do pull-ups everyday and you WILL get there.

There you have it…a few basic for beginning bodybuilders that will serve your needs for years to come. Take is safe, take it slow, and follow these proven exercises to bodybuilding success.
