Firebirds Remain Locked at No. 4 for 3rd Straight Week in D2SIDA East Region Poll

Head Coach Lester Butler's squad is 21-3, 1st in the ECC standings, and ranked No. 4 in the D2SIDA East Region Poll.
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team remained No. 4 for the 3rd straight week in the Week 13 D2SIDA East Region poll released today.
The Firebirds (21-3) won their 9th and 10th games in a row, respectively last week as they defeated the No. 8 ranked team in the region, Queens, 66-61 on Wednesday night, and Molloy, 79-61 on Saturday afternoon. They are currently No. 1 in the East Coast Conference standings – a league which also features the No. 7 and 8 ranked teams in the region – Roberts Wesleyan (16-5) and Queens (16-6) – as well as NYIT who is also receiving votes.
Fourteen of UDC's 21 wins (the 2nd most wins in the East Region) have come by double-figures, and the Firebirds are 7-1 outside of conference play and 11-1 on the road this season. UDC also boasts a win over a top-25 ranked team as they dominated No. 25 Virginia St., 88-62  back on November 19th.
Ahead of UDC are the same three Northeast-10 Conference teams from the previous two weeks: Stonehill, Adelphi and New Haven. Adelphi – which suffered a 66-61 loss at No. 5 Franklin Pierce last week, fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in the poll. The Panthers are 22-3 overall and ranked No. 9 in the most recent WBCA Top-25 national poll. Stonehill, previously ranked No. 2 in the poll, jumped Adelphi and moved to No. 1 in this week's East Region poll after a pair of home wins vs. Assumption (71-64) and Southern New Hampshire (64-49). The Skyhawks are currently No. 15 in WBCA National Poll and are 20-2 overall this season after clinching the NE-10 Northeast Division Regular Season Championship on Wednesday. New Haven stayed put at No. 3 in the poll after a pair of home wins vs. Le Le Moyne (80-64) and Pace (83-73).
UDC will visit Oakdale, NY on Wednesday night to take on ECC foe Dowling and then return home to host league foe Bridgeport on Saturday.

Chowan Hawks 76-60 Win Spoils the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Home Finale

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University women's basketball dropped a 76-60 home finale to the visiting Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) added 14 points and senior Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) chipped in 13 points.

Rachel Gostomski (Newport News, Va.) led all players in the game with a game-high 25 points and five three-pointers.  Alisha Mobley (Winchester, Va.) posted a double-double performance with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Chowan had nine different players score in the contest.
Both teams exchanged points early in the first half.  With the score tied 6-6 at the 15:26 mark, Gostomski's three-pointer led to a 7-2 run and 13-8 advantage for the Hawks.   Bowie State pulled within one point (13-12) with 12:11 remaining before halftime before Chantel Roberts’ (Suffolk, Va.) layup on the Hawks' next possession gave Chowan some cushion.
The Hawks battled for an eight point advantage (24-16) by the 7:45 mark and Gostomski's three-pointer pushed Chowan’s lead to 29-18.  With Bowie State trailing 35-27 and 2:06 left to play before halftime, Mobley’s three-pointer sparked a 10-5 run and contributed to Chowan's 45-32 lead at the end of the first half.
Chowan (13-11, 9-5 CIAA, 5-3 North) maintained a double digit lead until midway through the second half when Naylor's layup pulled the Lady Bulldogs within nine points (55-46).  Gostomski promptly nailed a three-pointer for Chowan to restore the commanding 58-46 advantage to the Hawks.
From that point forward, Chowan led by 10 or more points for the remainder of the contest and easily secured the 76-60.

The Lady Bulldogs really struggled to get shots to drop in the second half, making only 8-of-28 from the field (28.6 percent) and finished the afternoon at 37 percent on 20-of-54 shooting from the field. Bowie State missed all six of their second half 3-point attempts but managed 75 percent overall (18-of-24) at the free throw line.

The Hawks were pretty consistent the entire game, finishing up with a 45.5 percent field goal shooting percentage (25-of-55), which included 6-of-15 behind the arc. After shooting 75 percent at the free throw line in the first half, Chowan’s free throw percentage dipped to 57.9 percent (11-of-19) over the final 20 minutes.

Bowie State will play their final two games of the regular season on the road, beginning with a Wednesday night contest at Virginia State with a scheduled 5:30 pm

Second Half Makes the Difference in Bowie State’s 70-55 Home Finale Win against Chowan

BOWIE, Md. - Four Bowie State University players scored in double figures to lead the Bulldogs to a 70-55 home finale victory over the Chowan Hawks to improve to 19-7 overall, 11-3 in CIAA play and 6-2 in the North.

Senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) netted a game-high 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field. Senior Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points apiece and freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 10 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals.

Junior Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded eight points and eight rebounds in the win while junior Miles Jackson (Silver Spring, Md.) chipped in seven points. Junior Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md.) tallied three points to round out Bowie State’s scorers.

Mark Anthony Buright (Detoit, Mich.) opened the contest with a three-pointer.  The Hawks led 7-0 by the 17:19 mark before the Bulldogs battled back to knot the score with 15:47 remaining before halftime.  Trailing 12-11 with 11:15 on the clock following a Wilson three-pointer, Jalen Marshall’s (Hampton, Va.) layup returned the advantage to the Hawks.  Wells responded with a three-pointer for Bowie State to give the Bulldogs a 15-13 edge.

Bowie State led by as many as 11 points (27-16) with 4:13 left in the first half.  Down but not out, Chowan (13-11, 7-7 CIAA, 4-4 North) chipped away at the deficit and trailed by a mere point (30-29) after Smith's three-pointer capped a 13-3 run at the end of the first half.

Two made free throws by Kyree Bethel (Fayetteville, N.C.) followed by a Josh Mellette (Sanford, N.C.) jumper at the start of the second half pushed Chowan in front 33-30.  With the score tied 36-36 at the 15:27 mark, a dunk by Trevis Buckhanon (Baltimore, Md.) shifted the momentum back in favor of the Hawks.  Wilson's three-pointer for Bowie State at the 12:10 mark sparked an 8-0 run and left the Hawks trailing 46-38 with just under ten minutes left in the game.

Wilson's made free throw for Bowie State with 7:11 on the clock pushed the Bulldogs ahead by ten points (53-43).  Chowan trailed by double digit points on all but two occasions in the remainder of the contest.

Bowie State outscored Chowan 40-26 in the second half on 11-of-21 shooting from the field and 15-of-19 at the charity stripe.

Kotrtez Smith (Waldorf, Md.) and Mellette led the Hawks in scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively. Bethel, the teams’ leader in scoring average was held to just nine points.

“We met our goals … outrebounded them by 10 which was huge, held their leading scorer to single digits and did a great job defensively as a team”, said head coach Darrell Brooks. “As long as we’re defending a rebounding, we’re a tough team to beat.”

The Bulldogs travel south for their next contest which happens to be at division leading Virginia State on Wednesday (2/18) at 7:30 pm.
