When Children Pump Iron

(Sponsor this newsletter)
From Hercules to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the image of the muscular hero has inspired children for generations. And now, perhaps more than ever, physical education experts at the National Strength and Conditioning Association in Lincoln, Nebraska, are encouraging kids to beef up. Children are spending less and less time playing outdoors and more and more time watching TV or tapping at their computers, according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in 1996. As a result, they're getting heavier.
Over the past two decades, the number of American children who are overweight shot up from 10 percent to 25 percent, according to a 1998 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only half of U.S. children get as much exercise as they need, the researchers found, and as a result, kids are displaying signs of heart disease and diabetes before they even reach their teens.
Fit or Fat
The good news is that almost any kind of vigorous physical activity can help stem the tide of obesity. In addition, studies published in numerous journals, including the 1996 issues of the American Journal of Public Health and Nutrition Review, have found that physically active children are far less susceptible to emotional problems, are more likely to stay away from drugs, resist smoking cigarettes, delay sexual activity; develop more self-confidence and higher self-esteem, and even get better grades.
Weight training offers particular advantages to children who are overweight and struggle to keep up with their peers in more traditional childrens' sports, such as soccer and running. By lifting weights, these kids can improve their strength, endurance and coordination, enhancing their performance in other sports. And when they lift weights, children can exercise in privacy, away from the critical eyes of their schoolmates.
On the other hand, the impetus for weight lifting should come from the children themselves; children who prefer to spend time doing other types of physical activity should be encouraged to do so.
The Right Way
As with any sport, however, children can injure themselves if they take on too much weight or lift in the wrong position. Children should not be treated as miniature adults, particularly in terms of intensity. And training principles for adults must not be imposed on them.
In 1996, the National Strength and Conditioning Association laid out guidelines for children who want to lift weights:
Children should use machines that are properly designed for their size. Machines designed for adults are not safe for most children because children's arms and legs are not long enough to use them correctly. Many children can use only light free weights. Weight-lifting equipment specifically designed for children is available, but even doing squats while holding a broomstick may be a good starting point.
Children must be supervised by professional trainers. Supervising trainers should encourage children to achieve at their own personal best and discourage children from competing with their peers.
Children can begin around the time they would participate in organized sports (about age 7), but each child's readiness needs to be evaluated on an individual basis with careful attention given to their ability to follow directions.
Fitness professionals must closely supervise all children during resistance-training exercises. Children must be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise.

Strength and Power are at the core of any improvement in performance. If your child or a child you know is active in sports. get them started with a Youth Fitness Program from US Sports Strength and Conditioning also for athletes and fitness enthusiasts of all ages Get a leg up on the competition with your very own customized Strength and Power Program.

Youth Strength Training

Youth Strength Training Programs are designed for overall health and the achievement of a leaner, stronger body. These programs are an excellent first step in helping a young person learn how to lift weights safely. Done correctly, and with adult supervision, weight training can be an excellent form of exercise that, once learned, can provide a lifetime of health benefits.

Throughout the length of the Youth Strength Training Programs, the manipulation of the sets and repetitions for each exercise will be based on periodization concepts that involve changing the intensity and the volume of the workouts. The weights are lighter and the repetitions will be higher for added safety!

As with all the programs, the starting point of the workouts are based on the child's initial fitness level. With feedback, the actual progression of the program will follow the child's unique adaptation process to exercise.

Fine tune the programs to include various exercises that can be matched to equipment at home or in the gym! In addition to strength training, encourage children to participate in their favorite sports for a well rounded fitness program. Have fun and get healthy!

Custom Strength and Power Programs

These are a group of Custom Strength and Power Programs with some great additions and variations to the original Strength and Power Programs.

The programs with the word "Olympic" in the title will have the Olympic lifts (power clean, snatch etc) added in. The programs with "Advanced" in the title will use something called "phase jumping". Phase jumping means it includes a set that calls for one rep at an intensity level that is 5-10% higher than the work sets. This set has been added at the end of the descending warmup for the "bigger" or primary strength exercises like squat, power clean, bench etc. The set combinations for these exercises appear rather long, but usually half of them are actually warmup based! These phase jumping sets allow the body to neurally adapt to the training poundages that will be experienced in the next phase of training in the workout.

Included as one of these Custome Programs is an ACL "Functional" Rehab Program that is designed to bring strength levels back up over a 12 week time period. This ACL Rehab Program should not be done unless full range of motion exists in the knee joint, and physician clearence has occurred.

This superstar nutrient just keeps getting better

Co-enzyme Q10 is Not Just
For Your Heart Anymore

If you believe in good nutrition you're probably familiar with co-enzyme Q10, or CoQ10 for short. This is a popular nutritional supplement for folks who want to ensure that their hearts continue to beat longer and stronger.

CoQ10 is actually part of every cell in your body. It works deep inside cell mitochondria — the tiny "energy factories" you have in every cell. CoQ10 helps your cells produce the ATP molecule that is required for muscle contraction — in other words, you can't move without it.

Continued below. . .

Cancer Cells Killed by Eating This...
There is a nutrient in your kitchen, right now, that acts like a "smart bomb" against cancer cells.

It's one of the main phytonutrients in a specific type of food. Researchers are hailing it as a breakthrough that offers real hope for preventing and defeating cancer.

A new research study has shown how it can selectively target and kill cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells alone. The findings are breakthrough for its potential use in cancer prevention and treatment.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. There's also:
  • A natural cholesterol fighter that brings bad levels down 30%;
  • An effective method to lowering your blood pressure without harmful drugs;
  • A fruit that can fight Alzheimer's Disease;
Dr. Victor Marchione, aka the Food Doctor is revealing this and 16 other amazing "healing foods" in his newest report that you can see here.

And since your heart is an extremely important muscle in your body that contracts all day long for years on end, you can see why CoQ10 supplements would be a natural choice for anyone trying to improve heart health!

When University of Texas cardiologist Dr. Peter Langsjoen used CoQ10 to treat congestive heart failure, he described the improvements he saw in the patients' health as "nothing short of dramatic."

But long-time readers of this newsletter know it's more than just a heart supplement. CoQ10 is a potent cancer-fighter, too!
Even establishment doctors admit
CoQ10 is the real deal
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant that can help strengthen your immune system and protect your cells from free radical damage.

Even some mainstream medical establishments such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society give this nutrient "two thumbs up" as a first-rate immune system booster. And it's not often that these groups recommend nutritional solutions.

Because free radicals also can damage your DNA, some researchers have linked these harmful molecules to the development of certain cancers. But ongoing research seems to point to CoQ10 as a free radical's worst nightmare…

As early as 1961, researchers noted that some cancer patients had lower-than-normal amounts of CoQ10 in their bloodstream. In fact, patients with cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, pancreas, colon, kidney, and head and neck have all been shown to have low blood levels of CoQ10.

Is this just a coincidence? Probably not!

In 1993, University of Texas biochemist Dr. Peter Folkers, PhD, took note of these amazing CoQ10 benefits when he followed six cancer patients who took CoQ10 for congestive heart failure.

When he tracked the progress of the four lung cancer patients and the other two breast cancer patients—he found that ALL of them experienced remissions! Dr. Folkers was convinced that this was due to CoQ10.

And he is not alone in championing the benefits of CoQ10 treatments…
International studies show CoQ10 provides
natural chemotherapy benefits!
Although the American medical establishment prefers to push cancer drugs, radiation and surgery as the best cancer treatments—the global scientific community is far more open to researching CoQ10 as a complementary treatment, i.e. a treatment that can be used alongside drugs, radiation, etc.

Researchers have noted that the effects of chemotherapy drugs actually have beenstrengthened when doctors add CoQ10 as a supplement.

Because chemo drugs are so toxic, doctors have to limit the dosage they can administer. The problem is that high dosage chemotherapy treatments damage both cancerous and healthy cells.

What's more, chemotherapy can suppress a person's immune system permanently—leaving the patient open to other harmful and deadly infections.

But international studies are demonstrating the benefits of adding CoQ10 to traditional chemotherapy treatments. Here are some examples from around the world...
  • Italy—researchers treated children with leukemia or lymphoma with either the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin combined with a CoQ10 supplement, or chemo treatment alone. Doxorubicin is known to cause damage to the heart muscle.

Scientists observed that the CoQ10 supplements appeared to provide "a protective effect" on cardiac function.
  • India—a team of biochemical researchers at the Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in Madras conducted studies to prove that CoQ10 and other vitamins could help manage cancer even before chemotherapy was administered. Their studies indicated that CoQ10 prevented healthy cells from undergoing malignant changes.
  • Japan— researchers at the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Tokyo used the deadly chemical azoxymethane to induce colon cancer in rats. Some animals were fed a diet containing CoQ10 while another group received an unsupplemented diet.

When investigators saw first signs of colon cancer, they found that rats who received CoQ10 had less than half the cancers seen in the unsupplemented group. The scientists chalked it up to CoQ10 providing chemopreventive benefits.
What IS a co-enzyme, anyway?
If you read these articles regularly, you already know I'm a big fan of enzymes. And what's not to love?

These proteins help jump start many important chemical reactions that help power up your body and sustain your life.

The enzymes in your body increase the pace of these natural chemical reactions to help you:
  • Balance your cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Digest foods properly
  • Enhance your brain function
  • Maintain a healthy metabolism
  • Purge unwanted viruses from your bloodstream
  • Shed unwanted pounds
  • And much MORE!
In order to facilitate these reactions, enzymes must attach themselves to molecules (for example, a molecule of an apple you just ate) to "unlock" their energy. In order to get a good fit—a related protein called a co-enzyme steps up to assist.

CoQ10 is the most well-known nutrient in this category. I won't be surprised if more important co-enzymes are identified in the future.
Get the BEST form of CoQ10
The evidence about CoQ10's health benefits is convincing. And while investigators continue their studies, you don't have to wait for this remarkable food to be approved by the medical bosses. You can reap the benefits by taking CoQ10 supplements that are widely available in health food stores and on the Internet.

Ubiquinone is the common form of CoQ10, the one that's found in most supplements. However, the most powerful form of CoQ10 is ubiquinol. Ubiquinol is more expensive than ubiquinone, but it's worth it because it packs 8 times the punch.

I've heard of heart and cancer patients taking as much as 3,000 mg. of the cheaper ubiquinone to get the desired result. With the more potent ubiquinol you won't have to do that.

But if you don't have heart disease or cancer at this time, and you're strapped for cash, you don't need 3,000 mg, and the less expensive form of CoQ10 may be just fine.

It certainly can't hurt to boost your body's supply of a safe, natural nutrient known to fight dangerous free radicals… protect yourself from mutant cancer cells… and energize your body from the inside out!

Painless "Blowtorch" Procedure
Creates Mutiny in Cancer Cells

Imagine a riot inside the body of a cancer sufferer: Diseased cells turn on and destroy each other. . .induce their own death. . .and bring down all their fellow cancer cells.

But this "riot" leaves the healthy cells around them untouched.

It may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but new research has tapped incredible promise in a new, low-temperature "plasma blowtorch." This scene could soon be a reality for cancer patients. Keep reading for more. . .

Continued below. . .

Video: 10-Cent 'Tummy Tuck' Trims Masses of Belly Fat Without Surgery
Have you seen the incredible video that explains one doctor's solution for melting away big slabs of belly fat?

Apparently even overweight couch potatoes lost 26 square centimeters of belly fat -- without surgery or frightening drugs or even changing their eating habits one bit! This shocking new video has been sent to more than 1.3 million people already. If you haven't seen it yet, here's your chance. While it's still available, watch it for free here.

And just wait until you hear what it does for diabetes... watch free now.

The cold plasma blowtorch method
The blowtorch approach generates a beam of room-temperature plasma, safe enough to touch with your hand. A plasma is a sort of gas containing ionized or charged molecules. The plasma in this new treatment comes from nontoxic, room-temperature gases like helium, along with gases found in the air we breathe.

To make the plasma, scientists force fast-moving electrons through the previously mentioned room-temperature gases. This sparks such a massive energy burst that the outer strings of electron bonds collide with the atoms and molecules inside the gases. The electrons and ions that are knocked free then form a non-bonded, "soupy" mixture. The energy required to break the electrons away from their atoms dispels quickly, so the gas ions stay cool.

The plasma is directed in a pencil-point beam that uses short pulses with high voltage to pump out a low-temperature plume. A blowtorch is one analogy. You could also describe it as a sort of plasma gun, or perhaps a fire hose. But I'm neither a techie nor an engineer, so take my comments accordingly.

The point is that it shoots out a directed stream of particles that wreck cancer cells.

Dr. Mounir Laroussie, who directs the Laser and Plasma Engineering Institute at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, along with his team, wanted to test the effects of this plasma mixture on cancers. They took aim at leukemia cells and got a double surprise.

The first surprise was that nothing happened to the cells right after the plasma treatment. They didn't react, and they certainly didn't die ... at first.

But about four hours later — and in some cases, as long as eight hours later — things started happening. The cancer cells began to die. But of equal importance was the fact that normal cells around them were unaffected.

Further testing showed compelling results: Over 90 percent of leukemia cells were obliterated after only 10 minutes of treatment with this cold plasma blowtorch.

Loroussie believes there's a biochemical reaction that takes place when cancer cells are shot with cold plasma, which is what prompts the cancer cells to self-destruct while healthy cells are left unharmed.
Why healthy cells stay protected
The secret ingredient in this procedure may come down to ozone, which is one of the key molecules in cold plasma.

Ozone is a particularly reactive molecule with three oxygen atoms, as opposed to the two oxygen atoms found in the air we breathe. Ozone is increasingly useful in modern medicine. It's known to kill bacterial infections, which is important considering the increase we're seeing in drug-resistant bacteria.

As it turns out, ozone is a natural byproduct of a cell's metabolic cycle. And when you compare cancer cells to healthy cells, the cancer cells have much higher metabolisms. This naturally leads to elevated ozone levels.

So if you add extra ozone to the already-elevated ozone levels in cancer cells, it pushes those cancer cells to self-destruct in a frenzy of apoptosis. But, since healthy cells have lower levels of ozone to begin with, adding this additional ozone dose doesn't push them over the edge. They stay safe and unharmed.

That's the reason there's so much excitement behind this treatment. It's also why cold plasma treatment could be a major breakthrough for leukemia patients. Because even though leukemia patients often go on to lead healthy lives after overcoming cancer, they chronically suffer from the long-term side effects of interventions like chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplants. The side effects can include everything from hair loss to memory impairment to nerve damage.
Highway to cell death
Cold plasma treatment is getting a lot of attention, thanks to the findings described above. Researchers are hopeful it can be developed for other cancers, beyond leukemia. Research is already underway on how to properly dose skin, lung, and brain cancers with plasma treatments.

Low-temperature plasma may also help with a host of other unmanageable diseases and drug-resistant bacterial infections. One hope is that it can be used to curb the plaques that prompt Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Of course, it's not widely available yet and has to jump through a bunch of regulatory hoops. Fortunately, it doesn't appear to have long-term side effects.

At the very least, it tells us we need to find out more about how plasma prompts cell death. The complexities of different cancers make it hard to come up with effective treatments. But if the cold plasma route is as effective as some researchers think it could be, all that's left is to work out specific doses for different types of cancers.

UDC Men's Basketball Falls to Roberts Wesleyan, 77-67

December 15, 2012

Firebirds Fall to Roberts Wesleyan, 77-67

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team suffered its seventh straight loss as the Firebirds fell to 1-8 on the season with a 77-67 defeat at home against East Coast Conference newcomer, Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at UDC Gym.
Just a five-point game at halftime, the Redhawks used two separate 8-0 runs in the second half to bolster their lead to double-digits, and they hung on for a 10-point margin of victory despite a frantic late rally by the Firebirds.
With the win, Roberts Wesleyan improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in its inaugural ECC season while District of Columbia fell to 0-2 in league play.
The Redhawks were led by their senior forward Devin Grimes, who packed the stat sheet with 23 points, 16 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Guard Mike Stone also added 16 points on 5-of-7 FG shooting (3-of-5 from three-point range) and Tyrel Dixon pitched in with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Junior transfer Ralph Watts (Sociology – Peekskill, NY/UAlbany) had a team-high 16 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Firebirds. Junior transfer guard Michael Terry(Criminal Justice – Philadelphia, PA/Boston U) added 13 points, two steals and a block, and fellow junior transfer backcourt mate Quasim Jones (Business Management – Philadelphia, PA/Johnson CC) recorded 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Also, senior transfer forward D'Angelo Johnson (Mass Media – Washington, DC/Virginia State) notched his second straight double-figure scoring game, coming off the bench to record 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior starting guard Keith Brooks (Journalism – Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy HS) gave the Firebirds a great effort as well with nine points, eight rebounds (which tied his career-high), four assists and two steals. District of Columbia was without starting forward Ziad Ashmawy, as he has suffered a torn meniscus. The timetable on his return is indefinite.
Roberts Wesleyan grabbed an 11-2 lead in the opening 3:20 of play, but the Firebirds fought their way back into the game with a 7-2 run to close the gap to four, 13-9, with the 15-minute mark approaching. The Redhawks' lead hovered between four and nine points for the next 10 minutes when, trailing 26-20, Johnson's pair of free-throws and jumper in back-to-back possessions brought District of Columbia within two, 26-24. The two teams traded baskets after that, but RWC scored the final three points of the half – a 1-of-2 trip at the foul line by Stone and a layup by William Kemp-harris, and took a 31-26 lead at intermission.
Watts buried a jumper 48 seconds into the action for the first points of the second half to bring the Firebirds within three, 31-28, but that was as close as District of Columbia would get the rest of the way. Trailing 35-30, the Firebirds allowed the Redhawks on an 8-0 run, capped by a William Bromirski three-pointer to put RWC up, 43-30 at the 14:43 mark. Then after District of Columbia cut the lead back down to seven with consecutive three-pointers by Terry and Brooks, respectively, the Redhawks used another 8-0 run capped by Stone's three-pointer and took a 51-36 lead with 12:25 remaining.
Roberts Wesleyan, which shot 17-of-27 (63-percent) from the field and 5-of-7 (71-percent) from three-point range in the second half, grew its lead to as many as 17, before a frantic 14-4 Firebird run saw District of Columbia close the deficit to seven with 1:22 left in regulation. The Redhawks only made 6-of-10 free-throws down the stretch, but the Firebirds only lost ground as they shot just 1-for-5 from the field and 1-for-4 from the stripe in that time, resulting in a 10-point loss, 77-67.
The Firebirds have 15 days off for the winter holiday break before they visit non-conference foe UMass-Lowell on December 30th in their final game of the 2012 calendar year.
