Clubhead Speed: The Holy Grail of Driving Distance
By: Steve Pratt
Most golfers want to hit the ball
farther. Although club companies entice us to buy a new titanium driver
every year, claiming that you will hit further, the public’s average
drive still remains around 200 yards. A recent study showed that
in most cases, longer drives and second shots will lower the average
golfer’s score by up to several strokes. Let’s take a look at levels of
clubhead speeds. The average golfer swing in the neighborhood
of 80 miles per hour. This player’s average drive will travel around
200 yards, while a perfect drive will travel 224. The average player on
the PGA Tour swings around 111 mph and drives an average of around 284
yards. A pro’s perfect drive will wind up around 310 yards from the
tee, when everything syncs up. Theoretically, the average golfer
should gain about 2.5 yards for every mile per hour of increase in
swing speed. Better golfers routinely hit the ball exactly in the
middle of the clubface and generally have optimally fitting equipment,
will gain 2.6 or even 2.7 yards per mph increase. A perfectly struck
golf ball with optimum launch angle, backspin, and angle of attack will
travel 2.8 yards for every mile per hour of clubhead speed. Overall the speed of the clubhead is the biggest factor is hitting longer drives. The first milestone you should shoot for is 90 mph clubhead speed. At
this speed you will be able to reach all the holes on any regulation
golf course (from the appropriate tees for your skill) in the allotted
amount of strokes. For example, an average drive of 225 yards followed
by a 200 yard fairway wood would reach 425 yards. There are very few
par fours on regulation golf courses that play longer than this distance
from the middle tees, even with headwind. Therefore, you will be able
to drop up to 7 strokes per round when you reach level of clubhead
speed. The 100 mile per hour level is another significant dip in
average score. This is because your best drive and your best fairway
wood shot will reach some par fives in 2 shots. You will also have a
shorter club into par fours, allowing you to control the ball better
with more backspin. There are many people on the web that
advocate their programs for increasing your clubhead speed. However,
too many of these instructors fail to do enough real research on whether
their program will really work. You should find a teacher who has a
good track record for increasing his students’ clubhead speed. Talk to
some of them and find out how much distance they have gained, as well as
how much clubhead speed. If the program is online, make sure that the
creator has a background in applicable sciences. In other words, do
your own homework before you buy.

Many golfers think all it takes to
warm up for a round of golf is hitting the range. They will go and work
on different swings depending on the conditions, but this is not all it
takes to get fully warmed up and ready to play your round. Of
course, it is a bit different to warm up on a windy day compared to a
calm day. You might also be affected by the temperature depending on if
it is really hot or a bit cooler. Here are a few things you can do to
get fully warmed up for your regular game of golf.
Hitting the
driving range is a good thing, but you want to start off very slow with
shorter clubs before you move onto the longer clubs. This will help
your muscles relax and warm up slowly. If you go straight to your
driver, you risk injury instead of just warming up properly. You want
to work your way up through your bag to your driver. One of the best
ways to do this is to choose a wedge to start, then one of your shorter
irons, then a longer iron, finally a three wood, then your driver. Once
you make it to the driver, work back down the shorter clubs, and finish
with the clubs you plan to hit off the first tee. You want to
do more than just hit a few balls, though. You need to stretch
thoroughly, putt enough to get a feel for the greens, and even hit a few
chips or bunker shots. This will help you get a full warm up for every
part of your game. Starting with shorter shots or putts will help you
get warmed up before you hit the range. You need to understand you will
do more than just tee off so warm up all parts of your game. In
addition, you want to work on getting your emotions under control and
preparing your mind. You don't want to catch yourself taking out
frustrations on the course, so warm up your mind as well. Focus on some
of the good shots you have hit on the range and in the past. This will
help you see better shots and get into a positive frame of mind. It is
no secret that a bad mood can affect your game. You can even
test a new club or a swing technique in your warm up, but don't work on
anything specific. This is the time for you to get ready for your round
and find out what your game looks like for the day. You want to
practice the type of shots you plan to use and you want to make sure you
get the right swing ready to go for your round. You also want to
loosen all your muscles and get them ready to play the game. If you are
trying to change your entire swing during your warm up, then you won't
be able to get warmed up completely. With a proper warm-up, you will
have a much better chance of performing better on the course and you
won't have to wait five or six holes to start hitting the ball
correctly. Think about past rounds you have played without a
warm up. Chances are you started off cold or didn't finish all that
well. You may have hit a bad shot off the first tee. Alternatively,
even struggled down the stretch. With a proper warm-up, you take this
off the table and you can start off well from the beginning. You can
get a few of your bad shots out of the way when working through a warm
up. Your muscles will be ready, you can avoid injury, and you will
start with full confidence while you play.
Northern France provides some of the best golf courses you will ever find in the entire world. After playing in over 30 countries all around the world, it is obvious that my favorite course still remains as Cote d'Opale, which is not far from London. A few hidden gems can be found since the area has many renowned courses. Below you will find five of the top choices for Northern France Golf Courses: AA Saint Omer Golf Club This course is perfect for players of any level and has quite a bit to offer. With different tees, anybody can find the right length from a touring pro to a beginner just taking the game up. The beauty is found with lush forests, on this course, along with the great views and rolling terrain. You will get to hit your driver plenty, but you do want to be careful with the approach shot, as many greens are protected well. You can also choose to stay at the amazing three-star hotel that overlooks the final hole at the AA Saint Omer course, which will become one of your favorites after you play. Hardelot Les Pins This one of my favorites hosts the French Open qualifying round. I have been playing this course since I was a young child and it still looks great today. You will need to choose between risk and reward on many holes and you may be able to cut corners with your driver, but be careful of the three-level greens. A favorite of many this bright and gorgeous course provides a great golf holiday for anybody wanting to travel to Northern France. Le Touquet La Mer Le Touquet La Mer provides a challenge for all golfers from the first hole to the final hole. Perfect for all golfers, this type of course will may, however, not be the most forgiving at times. Do you want to know the secrets to a successful round of golf? Start by warming up properly, plan each shot, and don't get too greedy out on the course. This course is perfect if you like a quaint type. It is a link style course with the feeling of being close to home. He is called the beast and he earned it. Arras Golf The ladies play here often for the French Open and this course is a favorite of many. You start with a nine filled with water and finish with one that gives you plenty of chances to scores. This is a hot course that many love. A nice hotel in this historic city will allow you to enjoy your stay. A great value can be found within an hour of Calais when you choose to play at Arras Belle Dune Golf Club This course isn't an easy course and if the wind starts to blow, you may miss how beautiful it is because of the challenge it presents. You will be right in the middle of some of Europe's nature reserves and this makes for a great walk through your round along with the great design of the course. Even though this is a smaller club, it has made great progress over the years. The most charming Northern France golf is certainly found at Belle Dune. British golfers don't have any excuse because these courses are only a hop, skip, and a jump from England. You can take a golfing weekend for three or four days or even spend a full summer in Northern France. Either way, a trip to this area is necessary for all golfers.
