Bowie State Cruises to 37-3 Home Victory over Fayetteville State



BOWIE, Md. - The Bulldogs of Bowie State University scored 34 straight points and went on to cruise past Fayetteville State University 37-3 on Saturday evening in CIAA action.

Bowie State (3-2, 2-0 CIAA) ran 89 plays for 581 yards of offense, including 52 plays run in the first half. Fayetteville State managed only 164 yards of total offense, 155 yards of kick returns, and only converted 2-of-16 of their third down attempts.

Sophomore quarterback Amir Hall (Bowie, Md.) continues to torch opposing defenses, completing 29-of-51 passes for a game-high 422 yards in the win. The 422 yards were five short off his own school record of 427 yards set versus Seton Hill in the 2016 season opener.

Redshirt sophomore Brandon Britton (Columbia. Md.) led all receivers with a personal career-high 120 reception yards while sophomore Robert Chesson (Annapolis, Md.) toted the pigskin 15 times for a game-high 88 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Redshirt senior Jordan Garrison (Baltimore, Md.) caught a game-high seven receptions (57 yards) and redshirt freshman Geordan Clark (White Plains, Md.) recorded a personal season-best six receptions for 51 yards.

Senior Sean Copeland (Baltimore, Md.) paced the stingy Bowie State defense with nine tackles. Senior Heleaince Gates (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied seven tackles, one sack and two quarterback hurries while graduate student Kevaugn Townsend (Fort Washington, Md.) was responsible for a half dozen tackles which included 3.5 tackles for a loss.

In the first quarter, Bowie State scored first with a 31 yard field goal by freshman Gen Carson, II (Accokeek, Md.) at the 11:14 mark. The Broncos responded with a 35 yard field goal of their own from David Lamb(Pineville, NC) with 9:21 remaining in the quarter. Bowie State managed to produce an 11-play, 68 yard drive before the end of the first for a 10-3 advantage, capped off by a Chesson one yard score.

Fayetteville State (0-5, 0-2 CIAA) fell into a deeper hole in the second quarter. The Bulldogs outscored the Broncos 20-0 in the second for a 30-3 halftime lead. Chesson’s second and third touchdown runs were from four and one yard out.

The Bulldogs scored their final points of the contest early in the fourth quarter (12:15) when redshirt freshman Brandon Abrams (Baltimore, Md.) recorded his fourth TD run of the season, punching it in for six from one yard out.

Travis Scales (Southern Pines, N.C.) had a game-high 11 tackles, including 10 solo. David Stevenson (Stone Mountain, GA) followed with nine tackles and a pass breakup and Brian Walker (Charlotte, NC) had three solo tackles to go along with an interception.

Gedari Liverman (Elizabeth City, N.C.) had 154 total yards, including four kick returns for 115 yards and six catches for 23 yards. Devin Knudsen (Fresno, Calif.) completed 11-of-24 passes for 87 yards with an interception while Stevie Green (Washington, D.C.) had 78 yards on 22 carries.

Bowie State travels to Chowan University next Saturday (10/8) to face the Hawks at 3 p.m.
