DALLAS – A three-run eighth inning doomed Oklahoma Tuesday night as Dallas Baptist knocked off the Cowboys, 7-5, at Horner Ballpark.
The Cowboys led for six innings but could not hold the lead late as they fell to 12-7 on the season. DBU improved to 15-5.
"We just have to keep working," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "No one is going to get down about it. Conference play opens on Friday, and that part of the schedule is critical because Big 12 baseball and how you compete every single weekend against the teams in this league is a great challenge. We're going to rest up and keep these kids positive, motivate them and inspire them to be better, which we're going to, and keep plugging away."
Carson McCusker led the Cowboys at the plate against DBU with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in four at-bats, while Hueston Morrill also had two hits and drove in a run.
Peyton Battenfield took the loss on the mound to fall to 3-2 after allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings; the right-hander entered the game having given up just three runs in 19 innings over seven appearances this season.
With the Cowboys leading 5-4, DBU rallied for three runs against Battenfield in the decisive eighth. After a one-out walk and a passed ball, a base hit put runners on second and third. Blayne Jones then gave the Patriots their first lead of the game with a triple to deep center field, and an RBI single off the bat of Christian Boulware made the score 7-5.
Down to its final three outs, OSU mounted a rally in the ninth. Andrew Navigato and Cade Cabbiness led off the frame with back-to-back infield singles before both advanced to scoring position with no outs following a wild pitch.
But Trevor Boone and Christian Funk struck out before McCusker flew out to center field to end the game.
OSU took command of the game early with a two-out rally in the second inning as the Cowboys sent 11 batters to plate and tallied five runs to build a 5-0 advantage.
With a pair of runners on and two outs, a check-swing RBI double down the right-field line by McCusker brought home the Cowboys' first runs of the night. Up next an RBI single by Max Hewitt extended the OSU lead to 3-0.
The Pokes weren't done as Morrill followed with OSU's third consecutive RBI hit, and two batters later, Bryce Carter picked up an RBI on an infield single to complete the scoring.
DBU would cut into the Cowboys' lead in the bottom of the inning, however, as the Patriots took advantage of four walks and two errors to plate four runs against C.J. Varela and trim the OSU to lead to 5-4.
OSU returns home to open Big 12 Conference play Friday night against Kansas State. First pitch for the opener is set for 6:05 p.m.
