Barnstormers Drop Heartbreaker to Storm
DES MOINES - It took a last second heave to the end zone and a bobbling touchdown grab for the Sioux Falls Storm (6-1) to hand the Iowa Barnstormers (6-1) their first loss of the year, 36-32, on Saturday, April 20 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Quarterback Lorenzo Brown Jr. got things started for the Sioux Falls Storm, scoring on a quarterback sneak on the first drive to open up, 6-0. The Barnstormers would answer back on their first possession. Quarterback Daquan Neal threw to receiver Raheem Harvey and took back the lead, 7-6.
In the second quarter, Neal scored again, this time with his legs. Neal evaded tacklers and put Iowa up 14-6. Sioux Falls running back Calen Campbell scored from three yards out, cutting Iowa’s lead to 14-12 after another missed extra point. Defensive back Tyrell Pearson returned the ensuing kickoff 58 yards to put the Barnstormers up 20-12. The lead was short-lived, as Storm receiver Brandon Sheperd scored on an end around and kicker Parker Douglass made a field goal as time expired to put Sioux Falls up 22-20 at half.
In the third quarter, both defenses came up big. The Storm defense forced a fumble and the Barnstormers defense forced a stop to open the second half. The only score of the third quarter came when Neal found receiver Ryan Balentine to give Iowa the lead, 26-22.
The Storm opened up the fourth quarter with a touchdown. Brown Jr. hit Sheperd again, this time on a deep ball, allowing Sioux Falls to re-take the lead 29-26. Running back Jamal Tyler answered back right away, scoring on a second-effort touchdown run, 32-29. Iowa’s defense forced a stop, giving the offense the ball back. The Barnstormers offense had an opportunity with four minutes remaining, but the Storm’s defense held strong. The Sioux Falls offense took over with under two minutes to play. With time running down on the clock, Brown Jr. rolled right and threw to the end zone. The ball was dropped by the intended receiver, but receiver Kent Shelby was there and snagged it before it hit the ground. This gave the Storm a 36-32 lead with one second remaining. The kickoff return attempt for the Barnstormers was muffed and the game came to a close.
The Barnstormers will look to bounce back in an away game against the Tucson Sugar Skulls on April 27 before returning to Wells Fargo Arena to take on the Cedar Rapids River Kings on Saturday, May 4. Get Tickets.....
