The world is full of dangerous situations. Even stepping out our own front door can be risky. The thought of being without some sort of safeguard against danger can be so frightening, some people may be afraid to leave home. Thankfully, there’s a higher power in whom we can trust to keep us safe from harm on all levels.
When we rely on our own efforts to stay safe, there’s always a possibility that something could go wrong. Relying on God, however, gives us access to a level of protection the world doesn’t have. This knowledge gives us peace of mind from worry and fear, and allows us to rest easy. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
There are plenty of people who don’t fear God, and it shows in what they do. Crime and violence are never far away, and it’s easy to get rattled if we focus solely on this. However, God promises to watch over those who trust in Him for their security. When we respect and honor Him and give His Word more consideration that what’s going on around us, evil will be supernaturally kept at bay. “The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil” (Proverbs 19:23).
Some individuals constantly fret about accidents and mishaps that could befall them. Focusing on that possibility can magnify this fear and make it seem enormous. However, focusing on God and His promises to us has a way of putting everything into perspective. “If you say, ‘The LORD is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:9-12, NIV). No matter where we go or what we do, God will watch over us, if we trust in Him to do so.
Sometimes we can let our minds play tricks on us and we imagine the worst possible scenario. This traps us in the wrong mindset, and we end up making ourselves miserable. Contemplating God’s Word, however, gives us hope; it reassures us that disaster is not waiting for us just around the corner. “You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety” (Job 11:18, NIV). This boosts our confidence and helps us maintain a positive frame of mind.
Letting our fears determine everything we do or don’t do isn’t God’s will for us. He wants us to enjoy exciting and adventurous lives, without the dread of something bad happening. When we trust in God, we have protection from every threat, regardless of where it may come from. “But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster” (1 Kings 5:4, NIV). We may live in turbulent times, but relying on God to shield us from evil gives us peace.
