CHARLOTTE, N.C.
– Fourth-seeded Bowie State University outscored Fayetteville
State University 13-5 in overtime, taking a 72-64 win over the
top-seeded Broncos in the quarterfinals of the 2018 CIAA Tournament at
Bojangles’ Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
This game marked the 12th time the Bulldogs and Lady Broncos have met in the CIAA Tournament and Bowie State holds a 7-4 advantage.
Fayetteville
State got on the scoreboard first, but the long ball was working early
for Bowie State. Proctor and Jing knocked down triples they helped the
Bulldogs jump out to an early 10-6 lead by the first under five-minute
media timeout. Both team struggled to generate points following the
timeout with Bowie State leading 13-11 after 10 minutes thanks to a
layup by BSU freshman Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant,
Md.) as time expired.
The
Bulldogs pushed their lead to 18-11 before the Broncos responded with
an 8-0 to take a 19-18 lead. However, Bowie State answered with a 7-0
run to regain
the lead at 25-19 and led 28-21 at the 5:45 mark of the second quarter.
A
pair of free throws by FSU sophomore Shantel Bennett followed by a Noni
Kumba (Tracy, Calif.) trimmed Bowie State’s lead down to three (28-25).
Bowie
State’s Williams stuck a jumper only to have Fayetteville State score
the last five points, capped off by a 3-point heave by senior Breona
Jones (Henderson, N.C.), sending the teams into halftime tied at 30-all.
The
Broncos shot 42.9 percent from the field over the first half of play,
making 12-of-28 shots compared to 34.5 percent (10-of-29) for the
Bulldogs. Bowie
State out-rebounded Fayetteville State 24-16 with Williams hauling down eight to lead both teams.
Fayetteville State opened the second half with four unanswered points before the a Colston jumper stopped the mini-run.
Sophomore
Danaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) knocked down a shot baseline jumper
to cut the Bulldogs deficit to 36-35 just prior to the under-five media
time out in the third quarter. Graduate student Sade Chatman
(Minneapolis, Minn.) made one of two free throws to tie the game at
36-all and jumper in paint by Proctor gave the lead back to Bowie State
at 38-36.
The
BSU lead didn’t last long as Kuumab drilled a triple in front of the
Broncos bench to give the lead back to Fayetteville State at 39-38.
Back-to-back
field goals by Chi Chi Madeuebgunam (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jones gave
the Lady Broncos at 43-39. FSU’s Jones converted two free throws that
enabled Fayetteville State to take a 45-39 after three quarters.
Bowie
State’s Christian hot a pair of free throws and Jing followed with
baseline jumper to pull the Bulldogs within two at 45-43 to start the
fourth quarter.
Redshirt junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) tied the game at 46-all
at the 7:02 mark.
Williams
was fouled on a layup and completed the three-point play to shift the
advantage over the Bowie State’s Bulldogs at 49-46.
The
Broncos used a 13-4 burst to take a 59-53 lead with just under three
minutes remaining in the game only to see the Bulldogs close the gap to
59-57 after
a Chatman layup with 1:36 remaining.
Colston made one of two free throws to tie the game at 59-all with 41 seconds and the score remained tied, creating overtime.
Proctor
drilled a three from the wing to begin overtime and Williams knocked
down a pair of free throws to give Bowie State the 64-59 lead.
Bennett
gave Fayetteville State its first two points of the overtime via a pair
of free throws and Best followed with one of two free throws with 2:16 left
to cut the Bulldogs lead to 64-62.
With
time running down on the shot clock, Colston banked a straight away
3-pointer, was fouled on the play and made the free throw for the 68-62
advantage.
Following an FSU miss, Sade Chatman knocked down a free throw to extend the lead to 69-62 with 1:13 to play. Fayetteville State would then commit a costly turnover that led to two more free throws, this time by Lisa Jing, making it 71-62.
Another Bronco turnover ended with another Chatman free throw to end the BSU scoring. FSU’s Shaiquanda James provided the 72-64 final with a jumper with 21 seconds remaining, as BSU ran out the clock to take the upset win.
Fayetteville
State (16-9) was paced by Shantel Bennett, as she had a game-high 20
points. Teammate Noni Kuumba had 15 points while Courtney Best secured
a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
FSU shot 42.6% from the field (23-of-54) while BSU shot just 33.9% (21-of-62).
Bowie State had two players post double-doubles, with Kyaja Williams netting 16 points and 10 rebounds and Sade Chatman scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Kiara Colston and Lisa Jing also had a productive outing, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The win improves BSU to 19-8 on the season while FSU finishes their year at 16-10 overall.
Bowie State will advance to play the winner of the Winston-Salem State/Virginia State game on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte.
