Study Gives Overweight Adults Hope For Health

 
For years, being overweight was among the worst health stigmas and with good reason. To be obese medically classified as being at least 20 percent above your ideal body weight  was associated with a lack of self-discipline, as well as an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer. It was considered common knowledge that extra poundage  plain and simple would always lead to an early grave.
But does it?
While being overweight is certainly a health risk, a recent study suggests that the odds of dying of cardiovascular disease may be linked more closely to fitness than to fatness. In the March 1999 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers report that overweight men who were physically fit (as measured by performance on a treadmill) were less likely to die of all causes, including heart disease, than men who were lean but unfit.

Overall, it's better to be lean than to be fat, because fatness is still an independent risk factor for cardiac disease as well as many other diseases, says Kerry J. Stewart, Ed.D., an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins and director of cardiac rehabilitation and prevention at its Bayview Medical Center. But among those who are fat, the handful who are fit seem to have a good degree of protection from death from various causes.

Specifically, the study followed nearly 22,000 men aged 30 to 83 years for an average of eight years. They were broadly categorized by cardiovascular fitness level (fit or unfit) and body weight (lean, normal or obese). Regardless of their body weight, those who were fit had lower death rates. In fact, unfit lean men had more than twice the risk of dying of all causes than obese men who were physically fit.

The results of this study are encouraging for those who exercise regularly and achieve fitness, but are still overweight. Although body weight is determined mainly by how much you eat and exercise, genetics can play a part. Some people will never be thin, even if they exercise daily. Nevertheless, these people will still be better off in terms of better health, a better quality of life and a lowered risk of death.

Big Train Fall To Braves

 

The Big Train had their eyes set on victory as they played the Herndon Braves on a hot Tuesday night at Povich Field.  Bo Logan (Florida Atlantic) took the mound for the first inning for the Big Train in a 4-3 loss in extra innings.  Ray Lambert (Cal State Northridge) came in to the game in the second inning and pitched four innings giving up one run on five hits.

Luis Collazo (Virginia Tech) pitched the next four innings for the Big Train and secured the hold, giving up no runs and no hits.

Cody Brown (Mississippi State) hit a solo shot in his first action as the lead off hitter for the Big Train.  This home run marked Brown's his third homer in four games and his third game in a row with a homer at Povich.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Braves were able to score two runs on five hard-hit singles off of Logan.

The Braves crossed the plate for another run in the 3rd inning to give them a 3-1 lead over the Big Train.

The Big Train were able to tie the ball game at three in the top of the 5th.  The bases were loaded after a Justin Morris (Maryland) walk, and singles by Cody Brown and Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth).  With Brandon Lowe (Maryland) batting, Morris scored on a wild pitch that also moved Brown to third base.  Brown scored later in the at-bat after Lowe grounded out to first base.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Braves threatened to score but all hope was quelled when Cody Brown gunned a Braves runner out at third base trying to go first to third on a single.  Lambert then struck out the next batter to end the inning.

The 10th inning was the last of the game, as the Braves hit a walk off double to score a runner who was hit by a pitch.

Exercise Can Ward Off Gallstones

 
Study Offers More Reason to Get Fit
(MSNBC News Services, )  Exercise isn't just good for the heart your gallbladder will thank you, too. Women who exercise two to three hours a week cut their risk of excruciatingly painful gallstones by nearly one-third compared with women who don't exercise at all, according to a study at the Harvard School of Public Health.
THE USUAL treatment for painful gallstones is removal of the gallbladder, and about 500,000 Americans, two-thirds of them women, have their gallbladders taken out each year. The operations and hospitalization cost more than $5 billion a year, and the problem is the most common and costly digestive disease requiring hospitalization, according to the National Institutes of Health.
An earlier study by the same group looked only at men, even though women are twice as likely to develop gallstones. This study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, confirmed the earlier findings.
STUDY DETAILS
The researchers, led by Dr. Michael F. Leitzmann, looked at 60,290 women who were ages 40 to 65 in 1986 and had no history of gallstone disease. The women filled in surveys every two years about their activity. Overall, women who exercised about 30 minutes a day cut their risk of gallbladder surgery by 31 percent.
Obesity increases the risk of gallstones, as does rapid weight loss. But even after the researchers took obesity and recent weight changes into account, the exercisers were still 20 percent less likely to undergo gallbladder surgery.
POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS
The researchers theorize that exercise may reduce the cholesterol content of bile, the digestive juice stored in the gallbladder. That could reduce the number of gallstones, since 80 percent of the gallstones in this country are solid cholesterol. Also, people who exercise have more active large intestines and better levels of blood sugar and insulin, all of which may reduce the risk of gallstones.
Women who sit for 41 to 60 hours a week  that's most women with desk jobs were found to be 42 percent more likely to need their gallbladders removed than those who spend six hours or less sitting down. At more than 60 hours a week, the risk skyrockets: A woman is 132 times as likely to need gall bladder surgery as someone who spends most of her waking hours on her feet.
I think many diseases that are problems for us in the United States are lifestyle-oriented, said Dr. Joe Hines, a professor at UCLA Medical School. I think this is another study which points out the importance of Americans being more physically active.
Dr. Rudra Rai, a professor of gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University, said the results aren't surprising, but the study was the first he has seen to sort the effects of exercise out from a vast array of other factors, such as weight, age, hormone replacement therapy, diabetes, smoking, alcohol and caffeine.

University of the District of Columbia Announces Hiring of Kaitlyn Pasko as Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach

WASHINGTON, DC – Head coach Melynda Brown has announced the hiring of Kaitlyn Pasko as the Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach at the University of the District of Columbia on July 1st, 2014.
 
"We are incredibly fortunate to have Kaitlyn join our staff here at UDC," Brown said. "She brings the experience of playing and coaching at the Division I level as well as her successful coaching and recruiting ability from the Division II level. Kaitlyn will help our program continue to improve with her strong work ethic and knowledge of the game."
 
Pasko, who served as an Assistant Coach at Division I George Mason this past season, will assist Brown with recruiting, practices, and all day-to-day operations of the women's lacrosse program which enters its second season in Spring 2015.
 
At George Mason, Pasko helped guide the Patriots to a 7-9 overall record – a two-win improvement from the previous season that included an 11-9 victory at St. Bonaventure in their first ever conference game as a member of the Atlantic 10. Mid-season, she seamlessly assumed the roles of offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, and helped steer three of her players toward All-Atlantic 10 honors, including senior Rachel Obregon, who finished 6th in the league with 45 points behind 33 goals and 12 assists. Pasko also took on a number of administrative tasks such as uploading film from each home game in compliance with IWLCA regulations, scheduling and budgeting all team meals and travel, and supervising the team's study-hall hours each week. Additionally, she served as Assistant Director of TRIO Lacrosse Camps.
 
Before GMU, Pasko spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Le Moyne. While at Le Moyne, Pasko helped lead the Dolphins to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals in 2011 and 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2013. Le Moyne captured the regular season Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 2012 and 2013 and the NE-10 Tournament Championship in 2013.
 
At Le Moyne, Pasko acted as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and assistant director of Ultimate Draw Lacrosse Camps. She was responsible for preparing and managing the team budget and travel, opponent scouting reports, summer/winter workout conditioning packets and individual workout routines. As the offensive coordinator, Pasko designed, coordinated and directed all offensive plays, establishing a unit that included seven players with 25+ points in 2013. Her tenure culminated in six NCAA Division II First Team All-Americans, including the 2013 IWLCA Midfielder of the Year and the 2012 and 2013 Northeast-10 Players of the Year.
 
Pasko was a four-year varsity lacrosse letter winner at Oregon, while also participating four years with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and making the Dean's List and MPSF All-Academic Team. She is a 2010 graduate of the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and earned a Masters of Business Administration in May 2013 from Le Moyne College.

Big Train Fall To Redbirds 


On Monday night, the Bethesda Big Train looked to get back on track after losing the night before as they traveled to Baltimore to play the Redbirds. Henry Sisson (North Carolina) -- pictured above -- got the start and went six innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs against six strikeouts.  The Big Train lost 4-3, and have their first two-game losing streak of the season.

The Big Train opened up the scoring in the top of third.  Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth) hit a sacrifice fly to score Andrew Brown (San Diego State).  Later in the inning, Brandon Lowe (Maryland) singled and scored Tony DiLeo (Eastern Michigan) to make the score 2-0 Big Train.

The two run lead was safe until the Redbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th.  And in the bottom of the 8th, the Redbirds tacked on two more runs to give them a 4-2 lead.

In the 9th inning, the Big Train looked to rally and make a comeback but were unable to and only scored one run in the top of the 9th.

NPR's Weekend Edition ran a piece Sunday on the fading art of baseball score keeping-and told the story through the words of people at a Bethesda Big Train baseball game.

Don Gonyea, NPR's national political correspondent, put campaigns and elections aside for one night and reported on baseball spectators and officials who chronicle every pitch and play. Gonyea interviewed Big Train founder Bruce Adams; his wife, author and playwright Peggy Engel; and official scorer Glenn Orlin-all three of whom know a thing or two about baseball.
