Also used to battle altitude sickness and work productivity as a natural mood balancer. This plant is thought of highly in the Eurasia regions for its uses in muscle recovery such as torn muscles and strains. Only having been recognized in the west once Russian scientist (I.I .Brekhman) realized its notable use for stress relief (1954) and increase of endurance for physical strain in the men and women who took the herb. Used to increase and enhance mental sharpness, this herb is heralded for its ability to ward off flu and cold. Adaptagen, an ingredient shown to reduce the cells reaction to stress put on the body by daily upheavals that we all have to go through. Energy Drinks - Red Bull, Monster, etc.:
These popular Energy drinks on the market today can have potential side effects if not consumed responsibly or as directed. The array of ingredients make the energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster, etc. more likely to produce side effects than just caffeine alone. What’s worse, the safety of energy drinks has become a major issue as consumption has increased among children and teens.
Increased blood pressure.
Heart palpitations.
Anxiety and panic attacks.
Gastrointestinal disturbance (diarrhea)
Increased urination.
Dizziness, irritability, nausea, nervousness, jitters

LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS:
caffeine overdose (which can lead to a number of symptoms, including palpitations, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, convulsions and, in some cases, even death)
type 2 diabetes – as high consumption of caffeine reduces insulin sensitivity.

The Perfect Pill

Good Morning Athletes and Warriors!
The following guest article holds truth backed by science. However there is a new discovery in the Superfood SOUL that has changed the game of pain, inflammation, disease and more. Nothing wrong with using Aspirin as described, but please read with the understanding that there is more available in nature backed by science. Click here to learn more about SOUL and read on!
-Nate

  • The Perfect Pill
How the humble aspirin came to be so hallowed

It can halt a heart attack and stop a stroke. It may prevent certain types of cancer. Down two tablets after a foolish game of tackle football, and you'll probably be able to get out of bed in the morning. Although the active chemical in aspirin, salicylic acid, has been in use since Homer wrote The Iliad, the familiar white stuff has been around for only a little more than 100 years, ever since the German chemist Felix Hoffmann synthesized the substance into acetylsalicylic acid, to help ease his father's arthritis pain. When he saw that the drug also relieved headaches and reduced fevers, Hoffmann passed the word along to his boss, Friedrich Bayer, who soon started selling "aspirin," first as a powder, then as a pill. "Aspirin is as close to a wonder drug as you'll find in medicine today, but you'd never know it," says Dr. Charles Hennekens, a visiting professor of epidemiology at the University of Miami in Florida and one of the country's foremost aspirin researchers. "For the longest time, no one took it seriously because it was so common. My colleagues and I used to say that if aspirin were a prescription drug, cost twice as much, and were half as effective, it probably would have gotten more respect." Now, however, aspirin is getting its due. New research has identified a wealth of health benefits you can reap for a bit more than a penny per pill. Some of the ailments aspirin affects: ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Preliminary studies on the elderly suggest that those who took aspirin regularly (four times a week or more) "have lower rates of cognitive loss and dementia," says Hennekens.ARTHRITIS
Aspirin's famed anti-inflammatory properties shrink joints and tissue swollen by osteoarthritis or the more painful rheumatoid arthritis.CANCER
Research has shown aspirin to inhibit the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like fatty acids that scientists believe may play a role in tumor growth. A long-term study of 90,000 nurses in the United States between 1976 and 1995 showed that those who took four to six aspirins a week were less likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who took fewer. Other research suggests that taking a standard 325-milligram aspirin tablet daily may lower your risk of dying from colorectal cancer by up to 50 percent. Also, preliminary findings associate aspirin use with reducing the risk of esophageal cancer by as much as 90 percent. FLU
Aspirin is a tried-and-true fever reducer. What's not well known is that the drug can slow the development of all flu symptoms, especially achiness. "We're finding now that aspirin may have some important immune-boosting properties," says Hennekens.GALLSTONES
Research done at India's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences has shown that taking 350 milligrams of aspirin daily can improve gallbladder function and impede stone formation in people with gallstone disease. HEADACHE/MUSCLE ACHE
Tension and migraine headaches and muscle injuries trigger the release of prostaglandins, which cause inflammation. Aspirin eases pain by blocking the production of these substances. HEART ATTACK AND STROKE
Since the 1970s, doctors have known that aspirin can shrink inflamed blood vessels and act as an anticoagulant to help prevent the blood clots that trigger most heart attacks and strokes. If you have a history of coronary disease, the American Heart Association suggests you take an aspirin a day to ward off a heart attack (talk to your doctor first). Although no medical organization recommends that healthy people take aspirin as insurance against cardiac problems, there's good reason to think that such advice may be coming soon: In the U.S. Physicians Health Study, an ongoing survey of 22,000 male doctors, Harvard University researchers found that respondents who took an aspirin tablet daily reduced their risk of ever having a heart attack by 44 percent. Aspirin can even help save your life if a heart attack is in progress: At the first signs -- dizziness, shortness of breath, pain or heaviness in the chest, or pain that radiates to your neck or arms -- chew and swallow a regular aspirin tablet. Chewing the pill first helps speed the medication's absorption into your bloodstream, where it may stop a clot from forming or even help break up an existing one, says Hennekens. If you are unable to swallow, putting an aspirin under your tongue will have the same effect. By: Stephen C. George

    Back Pain and Your Job

United-Games-300x250.pngBack pain for Athletes and Warriors can be a very inconvenient mystery. But managed right through strength, flexibility, nutrition and rest, anyone can slowly and gradually break free from this menace. Read on freedom warriors!
    -Nate

    Back Pain and Your Job
This article is reprinted from, and is the property of the Back Association of Canada (BAC).

Sit much? Well, how much? What causes most people's back pain? The person who finds a cut and dried answer to that one will win the Nobel Prize. Not that the question hasn't been studied. Over the years, many back pain researchers have directed their energies to the issue of cause.

This does not mean, however, that you cannot be treated successfully. Quite the contrary! Over the past few years, health care professionals have realized that, when it comes to treating back pain, it's almost always enough to know the category - or categories - into which the problem falls. Narrowing the problem down further doesn't usually make a whole lot of difference since the conservative treatment for each category is more or less the same.

A few decades ago, trauma (falls, for instance) was extremely popular as a cause while, in recent years, a lot of attention has been paid to sitting. During the years between, lifting has been at the top of the list. So has "cause unknown". For instance, Dr. C. Hirsch, an American researcher, found that it was impossible to pinpoint the cause for six out of ten of the back pain sufferers he studied.

The problem is that back pain is complex. Just for openers, we are talking about a problem whose source - never mind whose cause - cannot, in many cases, be identified. (Is the pain coming from the 4th lumbar vertebra, or the 5th? The facet joint or the disc?). A second issue is that a person's state of mind plays an important role. An anxious person who has a back injury can end up with a serious, long-lasting problem, while someone else is back to normal in a couple of days. So it makes sense that linking cause and effect can be a nightmare.

With that in mind, an interesting study was published by another American researcher, Dr. Alexander Magora. Rather than trying to link back pain with a specific cause - like a fall or a poor lifting technique - Dr. Magora studied the occupations of more than 3,300 people. He was interested to know how much of their work day people spent doing three particular kinds of tasks: tasks that required them to sit; tasks that required them to stand; and, tasks that required them to lift.

In the case of sitting and standing, the workers were divided into three categories. Oftenmeant that a person sat for more than 4 hours each working day; sometimes meant between two and four hours each day, on average; and rarely or nevermeant that a person sat for less than two hours a day. (In the case of lifting, the categories were a bit different since the weight of the object also had to be considered.)

The results were very interesting, especially when it came to sitting. For example, hardly any of the back pain sufferers in Dr. Magora's study (3.5%) had jobs that required them to sit "sometimes". On the other hand, more than half of the back pain sufferers sat "rarely, or never" (54%). And a little less than half of them had jobs which required them to sit "often" (42%).

"Both too much sitting, and too little sitting," Dr. Magora concluded, "seems to be related to low back pain ." To put it simply, people are far less likely to suffer from a bad back if their jobs require them to do a variety of tasks - some sitting, some standing, some lifting - during the course of the work day.

It will require a commitment from management if a change in job routine is going to happen on a large scale. In the meantime, however, many of us could change our work habits, if we made it a priority in our own minds. For instance, if you have three hours of typing and two hours of filing, why not divide it up into 20 minute chunks? At the very least, it can't do your back any harm.

These Runner and Back Rehab Programs were designed to develop overall strength, but also take into account the potential for lower back pain that runners experience. These programs utilize basic back stabilization exercises and specific stretches to help strengthen the entire back. Also, the other exercises in the program help to minimize any further back pain.

Throughout the length of the Runner and Back Rehab Program, the manipulation of the sets and repetitions for each exercise will be based on periodization concepts that involve changing the intensity and the volume of the workouts. This variation provides a more consistent "programmed response" to exercise which will help to avoid those depressing plateau's in progress.

The starting point of the program is based on an initial fitness level. With feedback, the actual progression of the program will follow the body's unique adaptation process to exercise. Fine tune the program to include all the exercises that feel the best!

Top 10 Things You Can do for Your Sweetheart's Health

Wind-Sprints-510x341.jpgI can go out on a limb and say that few would argue that in any committed relationship, that the healthier and stronger each partner is, more than likely that health and strength can carry over into the life of the relationship. It's not as deep as it may sound. Check out our guest article for the particulars.
    -Nate

Top 10 Things You Can do for Your Sweetheart's Health
(Prevention, August ) - What's the best way to show your sweetheart you care? Play doctor -- with his or her health, that is. Giving your loved one the support and information he or she needs to make important lifestyle changes is the best gift you could offer. Remember: A little effort's better than none at all. If you find some of the changes we suggest too daunting, try taking small steps, like skipping red meat for one week, or walking for 15 minutes each night. Before you know it, you and your sweetheart will have made positive changes toward a healthier lifestyle -- and a longer life together. And now, the top ten:

Stock your fridge with fruits and veggies
Is your sweetheart overweight? Help him eat more, not less. That's right. Study after study shows that people who eat more naturally low-fat, low-calorie whole foods -- particularly fruits and vegetables -- eat less of the fattening, unhealthful fare that contributes to disease. Chop up raw vegetables for midnight snacks, and serve a large portion of delicately steamed vegetables with your romantic dinner for two. Nothing against Ben & Jerry, but saving sweets for the occasional treat is a lot better than keeping your sweetie's favorite indulgence on hand. For some, fruits and veggies are an acquired taste; remind him how much better he feels when he doesn't stuff himself.

    Axe the animal fat
Studies show that the biggest single risk factor for heart disease is the amount of animal fat in a person's diet. Saturated fatty acids and dietary cholesterol are the worst culprits when it comes to raising blood cholesterol and increasing heart disease risk, so avoid them whenever possible. The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your total fat intake to no more than 30% of total calories; some health organizations suggest even lower percentages. Reducing your intake of fatty meats, dairy products, oils and desserts helps; always read a product's food label before buying. A good lifestyle fix? Next time you go out for dinner, try a vegetarian restaurant. Better yet, buy her a veggie cookbook and try cooking up something together!

    Put out your cigarettes
If your sweetheart smokes, support his efforts to quit. If you light up on occasion, think about what smoke does to your loved ones and ask your sweetheart to help you kick the habit. According to the American Heart Association, smoking accounts for about 417,000 of the more than 2 million annual deaths in the U.S. Smokers have a greater risk of developing chronic disorders such as atherosclerosis, several types of cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Set aside a regular "fitness date"
How many nights have you come home from work and planted yourselves in front of the TV together? If your sweetheart's exercise regimen needs an extra kick, help him out by signing up for a physical activity you can do together several times a week. Martial arts, swing dancing, circus arts, boxing, self-defense, yoga and walking are just a few of the activities you could try. The secret is to meet there each week, so he doesn't have to choose whether or not to go -- it's just a part of his schedule. Classes also make a great gift.

    Make relaxation a priority
Research shows that many "type A" traits -- impatience, hostility, intolerance, quickness to anger -- increase a person's risk of heart disease. Hostility in particular has been shown to contribute to high blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat. Short-term symptoms of stress include fatigue, headaches, neck and jaw pain. Unfortunately, a recent Prevention magazine survey found that 50% of the respondents vented their tension by becoming snappish toward their partner; 47% also reported that they respond to stress by eating! Tension is at its highest for most people in the post-work, early evening hours, so planning anxiety-reducing exercise, yoga, relaxation techniques or a walk during this time is ideal. Also, don't skimp on vacations -- looking forward to getting away is half the fun.

    Sleep together
Getting adequate sleep is essential to beating stress and maintaining health. Most of us need eight hours to feel rested. If your partner has a lot of trouble getting up in the morning, dozes off easily or tires during the day, lack of sleep could be the culprit. Try to eat, work out and eat dinner a little earlier, if possible, and stock the nightstand with good reading material. The herb valerian has also been shown to perform as a sleep aid in a pinch.

    Keep him under cover
Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in the U.S. In the past two decades, its rate has doubled in both men and women. Although anybody can get it, basal and squamous cell carcinomas -- cancerous scabby looking bumps and fast-growing eczema-looking patches, respectively -- occur more frequently in fair people with a history of sunburn and a tendency to have atypical moles. Keep sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 handy at all times, and try to get your sweetie to use it as part of his or her daily ablutions (like brushing his teeth).

    Pack her lunch
For some people, lunch is more of a diet-killer than any other meal. Waiting too long to eat can cause your blood sugar to drop, prompting sugar and fat cravings. But packing your sweetie's lunch can do more than deliver needed energy, cut fat and save her money -- it will give her time to go for a walk or visit the gym during her lunch break. One word of caution: Eating at one's desk is not a good health move. Encourage your sweetheart to get out of the office to eat.Get tested
Many curable health problems are discovered too late for optimal treatment. Have your sweetie ask his health practitioner which tests are appropriate for his age, gender and health bracket. If you don't have health insurance or your plan doesn't cover some standard tests, set up a payment plan, or call local clinics in your area.

    Listen to each other
You'll never know what's wrong -- or what's right -- until she tells you. Ditto for him. So what if he thinks every little ache is one of the ten warning signs of cancer? Indulge him. There's no monthly premium on affection.

New Basics of Rotator Cuff Injuries

    United-Games-300x250.pngGood Morning Athletes and Warriors.
According to PubMed.Gov rotator cuff injuries ailments and surgeries linked to them are on the rise. As more people in general, not just varsity or pro athletes become more active and involve themselves in different sports activities. The movements required, if not trained for and executed properly, could present a risk in injury or ailment. There are a number of rehab and more importantly preventative measures every active person can take to help reduce and eliminate the opportunity for rotator cuff injuries to occur. Read on and learn more.
    -Nate

    Basics of Rotator Cuff Injuries

    by Dr. Richard Edelson

Physicians see more rotator cuff injuries than almost any other musculoskeletal injury. A patient with a rotator cuff injury will experience pain and weakness in the shoulder, but not swelling. Sometimes the patient does not have symptoms. Usually, though, the patient will have increased weakness and pain when active. This is especially true when raising the arm higher than shoulder level. Fortunately, there are quite a few treatments available for rotator cuff injury. The type of treatment that is suitable would depend upon the patient's age and the type of injury experienced.

Rotator cuff injuries occur in two ways. You could either have rotator cuff tendonitis or a rotator cuff tear. It is important to realize that there are a few other conditions that can cause the type of pain one experiences with a rotator cuff injury. For an accurate diagnosis, you will need to see your physician. The first step your physician will take is a physical examination. Following the examination, your doctor may inject your injured shoulder with a local anesthetic. This process will help your doctor in determining exactly what kind of injury you have. If your doctor decides that you have a rotator cuff tear, he or she may send you for some imaging tests. Imaging tests will help pinpoint the location of the injury and confirm whether or not the injury is a tear.

Rotator cuff tendonitis is more common than rotator cuff tear, but the treatment is similar for both. Rest, ice, compression and elevation, also known as RICE therapy, is prescribed for both conditions. Your doctor may also tell you to take an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen. You may also be referred to a physical therapist who will help you to understand how to modify your activities to avoid pain and may also give you instructions on exercises to help strengthen your shoulder. If these measures don't help, your doctor may give you a shot of a steroid/anesthetic mix. This injection will be made directly into the joint to help address your pain.

This sort of non-surgical intervention usually has a 50-50 chance of being effective. If it is to work, you will probably see results in 6 - 12 weeks. Using non-invasive techniques of this sort can be good in a number of ways. When you do not have surgery, you also do not have recovery time. Furthermore, you do not experience any of the risks commonly associated with surgery such as complications caused by anesthesia, permanent stiffening of the joint, or infection. One thing to realize, however, is that this approach can cause the original tear to increase in size. Additionally, even though there is not a set recovery time, you will be operating at less than your usual ability until you have completely recovered. Aside from these considerations is the fact that non-invasive techniques may not be effective. You may end up having surgery after all. If your injury is quite severe, your doctor may bypass the non-invasive option and recommend surgery right from the start.

When rotator cuff injury is treated with surgery, there are generally three options.

The method that allows the surgeon to operate most freely is called open repair surgery. This method utilizes a full incision in the shoulder. This option can leave a rather large scar.

Another method that utilizes both an incision and arthroscopy is called mini-open repair surgery. This is an outpatient procedure in which the surgeon makes a smaller incision and uses an arthroscope to see the interior of the shoulder structure. This procedure leaves a much smaller scar.

The third method is known as all arthroscopic surgery. This is the simplest option in that it is an outpatient procedure, and it also leaves the smallest scar.

The doctor will determine which procedure will work best based on the specific injury.

The majority of patients who have rotator cuff surgery experience a decrease in pain and an increase in ROM (range of motion) within four to six months following surgery. In fact, eighty to ninety-five percent of people who have this surgery report satisfaction with the results.

The expertise of the surgeon is a very important factor in the successful outcome of the surgery. However, there are some variables to keep in mind when considering speed and success of recovery. Among them are the type of tear, tissue quality, the patients age, and the amount the patient complies with the doctors instructions.

Some patients experience complications from surgery; however, these are rare. One to two percent may experience nerve injury. Approximately one percent may contract infection. Less than one percent may have detachment of the deltoid muscle. Less than one percent may experience stiffness. Tendon re-tear is experienced by approximately six percent of patients.
