BPI Sports-Five Common Beginner Questions: Answered

beginner
Many of you may be new to this whole working out thing, so as your trusted resource for everything fitness, we took the liberty of answering some questions we hear on a regular basis. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced athlete, it never hurts to brush up on the basics.

1. How long should I rest between sets?

The answer to this beginner question depends on your goal. If you’re trying to lose weight, shorter rest periods will help keep your heart rate up, for greater cardiovascular benefits. Short rest periods are also the key to maximizing your pump. However, if you’re trying to build strength, short rest intervals will only hinder you.
Heavier weights require recovery in between sets. Your workout is not a race, and the goal is to increase your strength. If you only rest for 60-90 seconds, chances are you won’t be able to give the next set all you’ve got. As a rule of thumb, rest for as long as it takes for you to be able to take on the next set effectively.
For a longer answer to this question, read our blog dedicated to the topic.

2. Does it matter when I eat?

Everyone is different. You may have great success with intermittent fasting, while another beginner may have to eat every two hours. So instead of focusing so much on when you’re eating, focus on how much you are eating.
If you are just starting a workout program, you will need to adjust your daily macros. Depending on your goal, calculate how much protein, carbs and fat you need each day to reach it. Tracking your food in this way will give you a better idea of what you’re putting in your body, and help hold you accountable on a daily basis.
For a more in-depth answer, read this blog.

3. Should I eat less on days that I am not lifting?

Again, if a weight-training program is new to you, this beginner question probably seems perfectly reasonable. If you aren’t lifting, your body requires less calories, right? Wrong.
Rest days are just as important to your muscle-building and weight loss goals as the days you work out, if not more so! Rest days allow your body to recover and rebuild. Without rest, you’ll never see any progress. And this is especially true if you deprive your body of the calories necessary to repair the muscle damage you caused in your training sessions. Stick to your macros like you would on a normal workout day and fuel your progress!

4. How long should I spend warming up?

Warming up is both overrated and underrated. First of all, you don’t need to spend 30 minutes getting warm. Our guess is you don’t have an extra 30 minutes to begin with, and it’s simply not necessary. However, not warming up at all is highly discouraged, especially if you’re planning to lift heavy.
To compromise, try to find time to work on your mobility outside of the gym. When you’re watching TV or getting ready for bed, do a few basic stretches to keep your muscles limber. Then, when you do get into the gym, you only need to spend about 15 minutes getting warmed up.
Not sure how to warm up? Start with 5 minutes on an elliptical or other low-impact cardio machine. Don’t exhaust yourself, but be sure to get your heart pumping and your muscles warm. Next, grab a very low weight and do a few sets of an exercise that works the muscle you plan to focus on. For example, if you’re training biceps and triceps do 20 bicep curls and 20 overhead triceps extensions. Focus on feeling the movement and waking up the connection between your mind and the muscle.

5. What is mind-muscle connection?

You’ll hear the term mind-muscle connection a lot in conversations about staying focused at the gym. It’s not always easy, but your brain plays just as much of a role in your workout as your muscles, so it is important.
Obviously, everything your body does is controlled by your brain. When it comes to working out, this specifically applies to muscle contractions. A signal is sent from your brain telling a muscle to contract. At the same time, your brain releases a chemical neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This chemical crosses the synapses between the nerves and the muscle to bind to receptors on the muscle fibers, which causes a contraction.
During this communication, your mind and your muscles connect. The more you improve the communication, the more muscle fibers you will recruit. The more fibers you recruit, the better the quality of the contraction, and the more effective your workout becomes.

Navy SEALs vs Green Berets (Differences, Similarities)

By: James Kara Murat

Both Navy SEALs and Green Berets are special covert groups they differ in function, but to a large extent are trained in almost the same skills. The Navy SEALs generally do not interfere in matters of politics and international coalition on foreign soil, while the Green Berets have a greater part to play in those matters.

Green Berets

The Green Berets also known as ‘United States Army Special Forces’ were formally established in 1952, by Brigadier General Robert McClure with the purpose of carrying out sensitive operations for the United States.

Joining the Green Beret’s is no easy task, only trained soldiers are permitted. The process is long and tedious and designed to discourage the weak willed. Instruction and Preparation: a thirty day course to instruct and brief the soldiers for the physical and mental pressure they will undoubtedly undergo.

The Sifting: a daylong event dedicated to determining that only the finest will be able to proceed further for the Special Forces training.

Instructions: on language, cultures, customs and traditions of numerous countries where they are likely to be posted.

SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape): Prisoner of War training, which includes resistance to torture.

Navy SEALs

The Navy SEALs, although dating back to the time of the invasion of Japan by America, only became an official body in the early 1960’s.

A Navy SEAL is trained to handle missions on the sea, in the air or over land. Operations include underwater demolitions, over land missions, infiltration, rescue, reconnaissance, unconventional warfare and anti-terrorist activities.

Selection

Rigorous training is required to become a Navy SEAL. A seven month long course covering, general instruction, conditioning, underwater demolition and on-land combat as well. Known to be one of the most physically grueling and mentally challenging trainings known to man, it’s no surprise that very few who start it, actually mange to finish.

During the training the candidate undergoes the following:

Indoctrination: to mentally and physically prepare them for the training ahead. Basic Conditioning: Aimed at conditioning the body and testing the limits of physical endurance.

SCUBA training: two and a half months of water based training in sabotage, underwater demolition, infiltration etc.

Land-warfare training: roughly three months of on the ground training in weapons combat, hand-to-hand combat and other land warfare.

Similarities

Both Green Berets and Navy SEALs have to undergo very concentrated and demanding training programs to qualify. The physical aspects of both training programs are very similar.

The U.S. Navy SEALs and the Green Berets are both Special Forces trained to perform various combat tactics and reconnaissance; the Green Berets officially hold the title of Special Forces.

Differences

Unlike Navy SEALs, Green Berets are also trained in languages, diplomacy, politics, culture, disinformation and psychological warfare.

While Navy SEALs assist in providing security, The Green Berets also work with foreign governments in areas of operation to advice on Political administration and Economical situations.

Most Green Berets are highly educated before entering the program itself; some with even a postgraduate degree.

My Sheep hear My Voice: How to hear from God and Prosper?

By: Joseph Ho

You may wonder what was it that motivated me to want to hear his voice. Well, it’s sad but true, we do not seek God until we need him desperately. For me, I had 5 crises that happened to me in the year 1997, I needed a miracle in short. I found God and he spoke to me. God also gave me confirmations through scriptures that he is the one who spoke to me. This gave me peace and assurance, he is a good God, and we should not fear that we will hear a different voice. I was elated, surprised and very excited about this new found counselor. Then, I read that God can do anything even impossible things, and that is when I decided that God can speak to me in anyways he chose. The bible says in John 10:27, "My sheep hears my voice; I know them and they follow Me." and again in John 10:3 – 5, "The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and he sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice."

Here is a simply analogy, I want you to reflect on your natural father; how do you recognize your father’s voice when he calls you on the phone. What is it about the voice that makes you recognize that it is your true father on the other line? First, it was the tone of his voice, and second it is the way he uses certain words, and thirdly, it is the way he speaks and his unique speech, fourth, it was the historical relationship with him that he can use certain events to jolt your memories all these combined together, gave you an idea that it is truly your father who is speaking to you. So have no fear that you will hear a wrong voice, we have a way to know if God is the one speaking to us.

Finally, be blessed in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and my prayers will accompany you as you seek to hear his voice. He promised me through the bible verse: Isaiah 32:3, "Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen. Then the mind of the rash will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear." Let your ears and eyes be opened as you seek to hear from him, and may he also cause you to hear, and see what goodness he has prepared for those who seek him. Finding him is finding an eternal treasure, for if God is for you, who can be against you. Whatever may be your situation, if God speaks to you, you will find a second chance and a way in the wilderness and he will lead you out of your trouble, I know because I came out of the wilderness because I hear his voice and like a sheep I followed the voice of the Shepherd and I came out of my pits. Truthfully, what have you got to lose? Go check out this book which was created to serve those who sincerely want to find a connection to the throne of God. SteveAxman Steve Axman Former Assistant Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator at University of Idaho
Steve Axman was most recently the quarterback coach at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Previous to that, he was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Idaho. Prior to that, he was the wide receivers coach at the University of Washington, a position he assumed before the 2004 season. It was Axman’s second stint on the Huskies staff. Previously, he served as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Axman oversaw the work of UW record-setting quarterbacks Marques Tuiasosopo and Cody Pickett. During the 2003 season, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UCLA.

Axman is no stranger to wide-open, multiple offense football or producing top- flight collegiate quarterbacks. During his career, he has worked at four Pac-10 schools (UCLA, Arizona, Stanford, and Washington). Among his former collegiate pupils are Troy Aikman and Drew Olsen (UCLA), Neil O’Donnell (Maryland), Jeff Lewis and Travis Brown (Northern Arizona), and Nate Enderle (Idaho). In 1998 (prior to joining the UW staff the first time), Axman served as the quarterbacks coach at Minnesota under Glen Mason. Before that, Axman was the head coach at Northern Arizona from 1990-97. He inherited a NAU program that had experienced just three winning seasons during the 1980s and had never qualified for the Division I-AA post-season playoffs. During his eight years with the Lumberjacks, Axman guided the team to a 48-41 record, making him the second-winningest coach in Northern Arizona’s history.

Axman’s NAU teams were known for their offensive fireworks. During his eight-year career, Axman’s teams averaged 30 points per game. His 1996 Lumberjack squad set or tied 14 national records and averaged 43.2 points per game en route to a 9-3 overall record and a 6-1 record in the Big Sky Conference. That season produced a secondplace finish in the Big Sky, the school’s first post-season appearance, and a school-best No. 6 national ranking. In 1989, Axman served as quarterbacks coach for Maryland, where he worked with O’Donnell. In 1987-88, he was the offensive coordinator at UCLA, where he coached Aikman. Prior to UCLA, Axman coached at Stanford (1986), with the Denver Gold of the United States Football League (1985), and at the University of Arizona (1980-1984), as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Axman previously spent a year at Illinois, three seasons at Army, and one season at Albany State. Prior to that, Axman’s first collegiate coaching assignment was at East Stroudsburg State in 1974. A 1969 graduate of C.W. Post College in Greenvale, NY, Axman went on to earn his first master’s degree from Long Island University in 1972 and his second in 1975 while coaching at East Stroudsburg State College.

Axman has authored 12 instructional books on football. He has also been featured on seven well-received instructional videos on football. He is nationally renowned for his knowledge of offensive fundamentals, schemes, and techniques, particularly quarterback play.

Yahoo Small Business Presents: How To Improve The Search Engine Rankings Of Your Blog

By: Tantawi Sagara

Traffic is like a source of life to bloggers, therefore search engine ranking is the thing that give bloggers their source of life; traffic. Bloggers who are interested in reaching a large audience with their blog should consider paying special attention to search engine optimization of their blog. Reaching a large audience may be a priority for a number of different reasons. One of the obvious reasons to attempt to generate increased traffic to a blog is to generate a profit. Bloggers who rely on high blog traffic for their revenue are obviously interested in increasing traffic. However, bloggers who create their blog to promote a cause may also be interested in increasing traffic simply to allow their message to reach a larger audience. Regardless of the reason to want to increase traffic, one of the best ways to do this is by optimizing the blog for search engines. This article I wrote will discuss the importance of search engine rankings and offer tips for optimizing a blog that I learnt.

Why Search Engine Rankings are Important

The importance of high search engine rankings is they can contribute to increased Internet traffic to the blog. This is because Internet users who use search engines to find information on a particular topic are much more likely to visit websites which appear on the first page of the search results than they are to visit websites which appear on subsequent pages of the search results. The websites appearing on the first page of the results are likely to get the most traffic. However, Internet users are not likely to search through more than a page or two of the search results when looking for more information on a particular subject. That's why being at the first and the second is already a big difference.

High search engine rankings essentially act as free advertisement for a blog or website. This is because many website users rely on popular search engines to assist them in finding useful information on the Internet. The search engines apply complex algorithms to evaluate websites and rank them accordingly for specific search terms. As a result Internet users put a great deal of value on the search results produced and trust these results to lead them to the best available websites relevant to the keywords they specified in the search.

Tips for Optimizing a Blog for Search Engines

One of the most common ways to optimize a blog or website for search engines is through the use of relevant keywords. Specifically the practice of applying specific keyword densities to the content of the blog is a common search engine optimization tactic employed. Blog owners and others who attempt to optimize their websites do not always agree on the optimal density for keywords but many believe a percentage of approximately 2%-3% is appropriate.

Another method for optimizing a search engine optimization is to place relevant keywords into the code of the website. This includes the title tags and META tags. This is important because search engines often consider the prominence of keywords when evaluating a website. This refers to the location in which the keywords first appear. Placing keywords early in the content of the website is helpful but it is important to note the search engines view the code first so keywords appearing before the body of the blog will be crawled first by the search engines.

Strength Training Develops Solid Softball Players

By: Lynn Vandyke

Softball is a popular sport these days. Corporations, adult leagues and inner-city competitions are fueling the demand for skilled and competitive players. While softball may be experiencing a surge of interest, the basic techniques to improve your game and gain a competitive edge have remained the same.

Many do not realize that basic softball movements such as batting and throwing are not a directly related to arm strength. The movement begins in the legs. The power is then transferred into the hips, the torso, the upper back, the chest, the shoulders and then the arms.

A proper softball strength training routine will include an exercise for each muscle group. During the off-season, athletes will be able to strength train 2-3 times per week. Training should be reduced to 1-2 times per week during the season. Each exercise should be performed 8-12 times for 1-3 sets.

Sprint, Super, Beast, Trifecta. Shop Spartan Race Series Gear Today!

Quickness, speed, agility, balance, explosiveness, and power will be enhanced as the strength training program progresses. Below is a list of sample exercises for the commonly used muscles in softball. There are many other exercises you could perform, but this will provide a starting point.

Quadriceps- Squats, One-Legged Squats, Jump Squats

Hams and Glutes- Lunges, Explosive Lunges, Bridge on Ball

Hip Adductors/Abductors- Lying Side Leg Raises, Ball Squeeze

Obliques- Oblique Crunch on Ball

Rectus Abdominis- Ball Crunch, 180 Ball Crunch

Erector Spinae- Plank Pose

Deltoids- Shoulder Press, Military Press

Pectoralis Major- Chest Fly, Chest Press, Push ups

Latissimus Dorsi- Bent Over Row, Reverse Fly

Triceps- Overhead Extensions, Skull crushers

Biceps- Bicep Curl, Hammer Curl

A powerful softball strength training program will produce powerful players. Use a full ROM (range of motion) for each exercise. Generally free weights provide a better ROM than machines, but use which ever feels best to you. The ultimate goal is to create a solid program that will deliver a well-rounded athlete.

BPI Sports-How to Stack the Liquid Water Enhancers

stack
You already know how easy the Liquid Water Enhancers are to use, now let’s talk about how easily you can incorporate them into your existing supplement regimen. Below we’ve created four stacks – one for each of the Liquid Water Enhancers. Find out which products they pair best with and how the benefits line up with your goal.

The Weight Loss Stack

garcinia LWE stack
If your goal is to lose weight, consider stacking these three products together. Garcinia Cambogia is a popular weight loss ingredient traditionally used to make meals more filling. Combining the Garcinia Liquid Water Enhancer with Garcinia + Carnitine makes it easier to get the recommended dose of garcinia throughout the day.
Adding CLA + Coconut Oil + Aminos continues to support your efforts, particularly the CLA and coconut oil. Numerous studies show that CLA helps burn stored body fat for fuel, while the MCTs in coconut oil may boost metabolism.
Take your Garcinia + Carnitine first thing in the morning, take CLA + Coconut Oil + Aminos before your workout and use the Garcinia Liquid Water Enhancer to flavor your water and help you drink more throughout the day.

The Aesthetics Stack

carnitine LWE stack
Everyone has an ideal physique in mind, likely with toned muscles and sculpted abs. Use this stack to help get you closer to that reflection in the mirror. Carnitine works as a fat transporter, taking freed up fat cells to the mitochondria where they are burned for energy. By taking CLA + Carnitine and supplementing throughout the day with the Carnitine Liquid Water Enhancer, it’s easier to make sure you get the correct dose for results. Plus, carnitine, CLA and BCAAs all fight fat and promote lean muscle.
Take your CLA + Carnitine first thing in the morning, take Best BCAA™ before your workout and add the Carnitine Liquid Water Enhancer to your water bottle so you can sip on it all day.

The Muscle Building Stack

best aminos LWE stack
If you’re trying to put on muscle, amino acids and protein are a no-brainer – muscle is made up of protein, and protein is made up of amino acids. Stacking the Best Aminos™ Liquid Water Enhancer with Best BCAA™ w/ Energy means you can supplement with BCAAs all day, no matter where you are. Best Protein™ provides a convenient way to get your protein macros, while offering an alternative to the chicken, rice and veggie diet, day in and day out.
Best BCAA™ w/ Energy is low-stim, so you can use it as a pre-workout or even a midday pick-me-up. Take Best Protein™ after your workout and then round your regimen out with a squirt of Best Aminos™ Liquid Water Enhancer in every glass of water you drink.

The Performance Stack

best energy LWE stack
If you’ve been working out for a while, perhaps you’re focused more on your performance than your appearance. This stack can help you take your workouts to the next level. Let’s start with Best Energy™, a great addition to any non-stim product. It provides just enough caffeine to function as a pre-workout or to get you over that midday slump. That extra boost could also be the push you need to get in a few more reps.
Creatine essentially acts as an energy source for your muscles, so adding it to your workout program can help increase strength and reduce fatigue during intense training. BCAAs are also used as an energy source, preventing your body from breaking down hard-earned muscle instead. As they are metabolized in your skeletal muscle, BCAAs are converted to fuel to potentially improve your performance.
Take Best BCAA Shredded™ first thing in the morning, especially if you do fasted cardio. Take one scoop of Best Creatine™ before and after your workout. Drink a bottle of water with a squirt of the Best Energy™ Liquid Water Enhancer with your pre-workout creatine or whenever you need an extra burst of energy.
