Darts is a fun social sport, the history of which can be traced back to the days of the longbow in medieval England. The enduring popularity of the sport can be attributed to its being a game that combines skill, talent, and a bit of luck. The upper classes of the times soon put their own stamp on the game. Henry VIII was well known for his immense love of the game, and was presented with a beautifully ornate set by Anne Boleyn.
The sport began as part of training in the martial art of archery. Historians infer, because it is not known for certain, that teachers of archery shortened some arrows and asked their students to throw them at the bottom of an empty wine barrel. The fact that the bottom of an empty wine barrel was used is a clue to how the game evolved into a pastime. It is believed that the soldiers took their shortened arrows on their visit to the local drinking establishment to exhibit their skill, while having fun there. Gradually, some inventive dart thrower introduced a cross section of a moderate-sized tree. The “board” had rings, and upon drying, further segmentation was provided by the cracks. Thus, from the cracked and dried cross section of a tree evolved the modern-day dart board.
The history of darts in the United States can be traced to the Pilgrims. These tough colonizers are believed to have played the game on board the Mayflower as it made its ocean crossing. Later, the game was played fervently in the United States as a favorite pastime.
It was around 1900 that the rules for darts became what they are today. The size of the board, distance for throwing, and even the size of the darts were standardized. Today, around the world, organized teams play for trophies and professional leagues. The prominent associations worldwide for dart games are World Darts Federation (WDF), British Darts Organization and Darts Federation of Australia.
A set of 18-gram brass darts costs around $10, whereas a set of tungsten darts is $140. Prices vary depending on the material the dart is made of, as well as any extras like movable points or special paint jobs. Prices differ from catalog to catalog as well.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer?

Being a part of the police force is one of the most coveted positions in the United States as well as across the globe. A person who becomes a police officer is bound to face a lot of challenges and responsibilities during his course of his/her job. However, there is an intrinsic motivation and pleasure at being able to help the society at large with your services as a police officer.

A Police officer has to undergo an extensive selection process in which he is tested both physically and mentally. Once he is found to be fit in every aspect, he has to undergo a rigorous training procedure at a police academy. A letter of employment then comes with many strings attached rather than a uniform, badge and keys to your police car, as suspected by many of us wanting to become police officers.

Every state in the United States has a different training procedure for police officers. Each state also has a number of training academies which offer law enforcement training to individuals who are selected for the police force. There are around 274 academies on county, regional or state basis, 249 academies on college, university and technical school level and 103 academies at city or municipal level, making a total of 626 law enforcement academies in the United States.

Some states require candidates to get relevant law enforcement training at the local college and then apply for the police force. Whereas there are some states that require individuals to go through the hiring process and then go through the police academy’s in-house training program. There are some other states, which may require completing the internal training apart from having an external academy certificate. However, in each of these scenarios every selected candidate has to undergo a mix of classroom training, along with strenuous physical training.

The average duration of basic training is around 18 weeks in all these academies. However, they might range from four to six weeks considering the differences in each academy. This includes covering topics like firearms skills, first aid, self defense, criminal law, ethics, health and fitness, patrol procedures, problem solving, mediation skills, stress prevention, human relations etc. On the other hand, this excludes the field training component.  On average, a trainee has to spend 180 hours or about eight weeks in the field while he is tagged along a training officer on routine patrol as well as various other duties. Some states also require continuous education after you have got your training certificate for further promotion and advancement at your job.

An Introduction To Wrestling

Depending on how you view it or how serious you are about wrestling, wrestling is a sport that can either be a fun game, a competition wherein someone wins and someone loses, or a profit-making undertaking wherein you can gain either popularity or notoriety.
* Training the Body to Become a Weapon
Wrestling is a sport where your body is your weapon. If you are serious about becoming a professional wrestler, you need to be constantly training and building up your strength. This means working out throughout the year, even during the off-season, when you aren't participating in dual meets and wrestling tournaments. It also means maintaining or cutting your weight while simultaneously doing strength training.
* Strength Training and Wrestling
Maintaining or cutting weight is important in wrestling because when you are training to become a wrestler, your body requires more nutrients compared to the average individual. If you are trying to take off some weight, strength training becomes even more important since your body uses up its own muscles for food during wrestling practice and actual wrestling matches. In this regard, diet plays a major role in strength training. Your carbohydrate intake is restricted (since your goal is to cut down on your weight); your body turns to the carbohydrates stored in your body and uses those for energy. When the stored carbohydrates are used up, your body will next turn to your liver, where glycogen is stored. If you wrestle the next day, it is this glycogen that your body will use for energy.
* Muscling Up Doesn't Have to Be Expensive
Contrary to what you may think, training to become a professional wrestler and building up the muscles and strength to overcome your opponents doesn't require that you buy expensive training equipment. In addition, there are strength building exercises you can perform easily, without having to pay a lot of money for equipment and facilities. You can read more about essential wrestling gear and accessories at Dick's Sporting Goods Wrestling
* Amateur and Professional Wrestling
Wrestling is a sport that attracts millions of fans worldwide. College wrestling and professional/international wrestling are two divisions of wrestling. College wrestling is amateur wrestling. International and Olympic professional wrestling matches are governed and administered by the Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées or FILA.
In the world of professional wrestling, the World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE (formerly the World Wrestling Federation or WWF) is a powerhouse to reckon with. Many professional wrestlers have been launched to stardom after competing in the WWE, which is considered as the largest professional wrestling organization to date.
Another professional wrestling organization is the Total Nonstop Action or TNA Wrestling. Established in 2002 by father and son Jerry and Jeff Jarret, TNA Wrestling was created after Jeff Jarrett had a falling out with Vince McMahon, chairman of the WWE. Jerry Jarrett took it upon himself to start another professional wrestling organization where his son can wrestle since it was unlikely that Jeff would ever be seen in the WWE ring again.

Get in Shape for Wrestling

Wrestling has always been a sport known for its toughness and need for discipline to achieve such physical skills and movements. The main emphasis in wrestling is the ability to create short, explosive bursts of energy during the match to be able to execute offensive attacks and defensive counter-strikes. There are many different styles of wrestling which not only require these short, explosive bursts of energy, but also require a high level of anaerobic endurance and flexibility.Wrestling has always been a sport known for its toughness and need for discipline to achieve such physical skills and movements. The main emphasis in wrestling is the ability to create short, explosive bursts of energy during the match to be able to execute offensive attacks and defensive counter-strikes. There are many different styles of wrestling which not only require these short, explosive bursts of energy, but also require a high level of anaerobic endurance and flexibility. Training for wrestling is extremely intensive and grueling. It forces you to work in an anaerobic environment where you are almost begging for air. Muscles grow when under stress, and the goal in wrestling is to make them grow as quickly as possible. This is the main reason why wrestlers are the most overtrained athletes in the world. There training split emphasises each muscle group during every workout session. The University of Michigan wrestling team uses the "full-body split," as you can see in their workout:
  • Manual Neck
  • Any Shrug
  • Any Shoulder
  • Chin ups
  • Hammer Flat Bench
  • Rope Climb
  • Hammer Incline
  • Straight Bar Curls
  • Rope-a-Dope
  • Ground Base Push/Pull
  • Dips
  • Any Bicep
  • Hammer Leg Press
  • Wall Sit
  • Blocks
  • Calves

Wrestling is a combination of two different types of athletes: Power distance and endurance. A wrestler must get optimal energy from each of the three different energy systems. That means as a wrestler, you should plan your nutritional intake to support all three systems of energy. You also need to adjust your caloric intake in the off-season to suit your fitness goals. That means if you want to become quicker, simply cut your calories. If your looking to get stronger, then you should increase your calories. As a wrestler, your body is craving more nutrients than that of the average person. That means it is vital that you supplement your already strong training and nutrition program. A good multivitamin that contains an adequate amount of Vitamins A, B, C, and Zinc should be at the top of your supplement list. However, the following supplements are also useful in helping you become a better wrestler:
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Citrulline Malate
  • Calcium
  • Whey Protein
  • Glucosamine Sulfate
  • Creatine
  • Glutamine
Besides football, you will not find a sport that is more physically demanding than that of wrestling. If you`re not in decent enough shape during the match, you will simply be humiliated when you opponent crushes you to pieces in front of hundreds of people. That is why you need to be in great shape. Get your butt to the gym. Until next time, later.

Dart: Sharpening Darts vs. Rounding Darts

Sharpening and rounding darts for sport or for competition is a good skill to develop, especially if you're a player. The points aren't actually meant to be sharp, even though they may be when you first buy them. Who woulda' thought?

You've been practicing for a while now. You've gotten pretty good. Now you've come to a different dartboard and your darts won't stick. What's the use now?
Sharpening or rounding darts for sport or for competition is a good skill to develop, especially if you're a player. The dart points aren't actually meant to be sharp, even though they may be when you first buy them. Who woulda' thought? Sharp dart points ruin a dartboard by nicking the wires, permanently damaging them. Interestingly, they will cause the darts to bounce quite regularly off the dartboard. Not a good thing at all. And the sharp points won't stay sharp very long. The points will often bend or roll over upon impact.
Many times a burr will form on a sharp pointed dart after sticking. This very small, very thin wire coming off the tip will cause dartboard fibers to be wrenched free when you're pulling them off the board. Burrs are very bad for dart boards. To check for a burr, hold the dart with the tip up. Run a fingernail up the side of the point. If there is a burr, your fingernail will catch on it. Should this happen, a dart sharpener, or sandpaper, can easily be used to remove the burr. Remember that it is a fingernail and not a finger tip to use. A burr is a hell of a splinter to have to remove.
So if you don't want it sharp, then what? Straight up, the point of a dart should be rounded. Rounded just like a ballpoint pen. Rounded tips do not damage a dartboard. They will slide past the wires instead of cutting them. There is no cleaving and, thus no burr will form. Interestingly, rounded-tip darts will stick to a dartboard much more than will sharp-tip darts. How about that? Don't fight it. That's just how it goes. And when you loosen the dart, dartboard fibers will not be pulled free. Even better.
Some dart players believe that a dart point should not be sharp or round. They believe that they don't even need to be maintained. Just play on! This is not good. Oh, no. An unmaintained dart tip will not stay round, it will become flat. This flat-tipped dart will simply bounce right off the dartboard, whether it strikes the wires or the board fibers. And because flat tips compress dartboard fibers upon impact, repeated use will ruin the dartboard, making it very difficult for darts to stick at all.
When the point of a dart begins to flatten, we only want to sharpen the tip enough to round it for use. There are hollow, cylindrical dart sharpening stones that may be used to sharpen the dart tip. These concave stones are fantastic sharpeners for dars. Small, flat rectangular sharpening stones for darts are also available. If all else is unavailable, use very coarse sandpaper. Simply wrap the sandpaper around the tip, pinch it firmly and rotate the tip until the dart becomes sharp.
Now that the tip is sharp, you'll want to round it. Place the tip down on a sharpening stone or sand paper as though it were standing on end. Spin the dart slowly in place just until that tip has dulled a bit. Now tip the dart downward ever so slightly and spin it again just a handful of times. And now you're done. If you don't trust yourself to hold the dart still while spinning it, put the stone and dartor your hand holding the dartflush against a wall, or immobile solid structure, and then round the dart.
If your darts are dirty, clean them with water and a soft soap. Thoroughly dry them. Now they can be stored without worry of rust. But, if they do become rusty, sandpaper will easily do the trick. Lubricate the points with oil, wipe them as dry as possible and then store them. If cared for consistently, your darts, and not the flightsFree Reprint Articles, could last a lifetime.
Remember to keep your darts rounded. Definitely not sharp and surely not flat. It'll only take a couple of minutes of your time to keep them in their best condition. It may improve your scoring and will surely lengthen the life of your dartboard. Good luck!
