Try These Fatigue-Fighting Foods

You're not alone.

Many people, especially women, are constantly suffering from a lack of energy. Fatigue can be caused by a number of different factors, but for many people, poor nutrition is to blame.

Since food is the body's fuel, how well you're able to perform during the day may be directly related to what foods you fill up with during meal and snack time.

When it comes to energy levels, foods and drinks that play the biggest role are carbohydrates, protein, water, and caffeine.

Here's how to include them in your diet:

Carbs for Energy
Your body needs some carbs. Yes, you heard it right. Carbs!

A combination of complex and simple carbs is what to aim for to get maximum benefit. Complex carbs are slower to burn and include foods like whole grains and starchy vegetables (squash, potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin). Whole grains that are high in fiber are what you need for sustained, long-lasting energy. Look for bread that contains two to three grams of fiber per slice.

For a healthy dose of simple carbs, stick with fresh, whole fruits.

Protein for Stamina
While carbs supply energy, protein is responsible for releasing the energy.

Protein is also essential for cell growth, the transport of nutrients and hormones through the body, healthy muscles, and a properly working immune system.

Be sure to eat a source of protein at each meal, whether lean meat, fish, poultry, beans, eggs, soy, nuts, or low-fat dairy.

Water for Refreshment
Essential to survival, water is also essential for energy.

When you consider that two-thirds of your body is made of water, you're reminded how important water is to health and wellness. Water helps to control your temperature, helps you digest food, lubricates your organs, and plays a major role in creating energy molecules.

If you're depleted of water, you probably feel depleted of energy. If you're dehydrated, you'll feel completely dragged out. Without enough water, your body will work overtime to re-hydrate itself instead of producing energy.

Caffeine for Stimulation
Caffeine is a stimulant that works by exaggerating the effects of your natural hormones, causing your heart to beat faster and your breathing to increase, making you feel more alert.

Perhaps you're one of the millions of people who drink one or more cups of coffee in the morning. If so, you know the powerful effect caffeine has to jumpstart your energy level.

Besides coffee, caffeine is also found in tea, sodas, herbs, and chocolate. Be aware that too much caffeine can make you feel jittery, interfere with your sleep, and cause dehydration.

Additional Tips
Keep in mind that overeating, no matter what food, may cause sluggishness.

Instead of three large meals, try eating several small meals (don't forget breakfast!) throughout the day to give you constant bursts of energy.

Too much alcohol or a vitamin deficiency is often to blame for low energy levels. For women, a dragged out feeling could be caused by anemia (low iron) due to their monthly menstruation.

If you still feel fatigued and lethargic after eating a well-balanced diet, contact a food professional or your physician. Stress, medications, diseases, sleep problems, or lack of exercise may be to blame, and getting these under control will get your energy level back where it belongs.

Skinny Fat to Six Pack Abs for this Mother of FOUR!

Nate-and-Becky.jpg'Skinny-Fat' Athletes and Warriors is a term born out of the late 90's that describes those unfortunate folks who shunned lifting weights thinking that it would make them too bulky and instead went on insane diets and did lots of boring cardio.
This usually results in this not-so-rare condition where you lose muscle and achieve a sick looking flabby physique where it appears that your flesh is about to fall off of your bones. 5 Steps to Curb Closet Eating

  • I prefer to eat in private, where no one else can see.
  • I eat healthy in front of others but then indulge recklessly in private.
  • I follow a healthy diet during the day, only to fall off the wagon at night.
  • I sneak food secretly and eat it away from others.
If you can relate to any of the above statements then you may be engaging in closet eating. This "secret eating life" of yours sabotages your fitness goals, making it impossible to achieve the body that you want.

Before we dive into this topic, it's important to approach yourself from a place of love and respect. Resist the urge to look at yourself as a failure as you strive to discard unhealthy eating habits.

Use the following 5 steps to curb your closet eating once and for all:

Step #1: Learn Your Triggers
Journal about the feelings you experience before, during and after an episode of closet eating. Was there a particular trigger that caused you to feel stressed, or angry, or helpless before the urge to eat in secrecy hit you?

Refer back to your journal after a handful of episodes and try to determine a pattern. This will allow you to prepare yourself with an exit plan before the next potential episode.

For example, if you find that your closet eating occurs mainly when your spouse goes out of town on business, then make plans to visit with friends rather than be alone at home with food.

Step #2: Log Every Calorie
Let's face the facts. Just because no one sees you eat it, doesn't mean that the calories don't exist. The simple act of tallying each food item that you eat will force you to be more mindful of your eating habits.

Find your ideal calorie range by consulting your doctor, and be aware of how close you come to that range each day. Resist the urge to not log foods that are eaten in secrecy.

The point is to bring accountability to the situation, so be vigilant.

Step #3: Carry Healthy Snacks
When the urge to eat in secrecy hits you, it may be useful to allow yourself the snack, but change the script slightly by making it healthy and portion controlled.

Eat one of these snacks every few hours to prevent from becoming overly hungry, thus more susceptible to reckless eating.

Look below for a list of healthy, portion controlled snacks to incorporate into your diet.

Step #4: Don't Stock Bad Food
Most cases of closet eating are said to occur in the comfort of your own home. Be proactive by not stocking your favorite indulgences in the kitchen.

When you have the urge to sneak a few bites of ice cream before bed, you'll be unable to do so if there isn't any ice cream to be found. Be careful not to fall into the trap of "buying it for the kids," as this is a slippery slope.

No one in the family benefits from having junk food stocked in the house. Get it out.

Step #5: Exercise Regularly
How can exercising regularly help you overcome closet eating? It's simple. When you are actively working towards a goal, and are supported, you'll be less likely to self-sabotage.

This 60 Year Old Grandmother Dropped 20 lbs and Inspires Her Students

I LOVE today’s transformation story!! When women who are over 60 come to us, wondering if it’s too late for them to get in great shape, to be strong and fit, and to look and feel great, we always say NO! The Need For Speed: It's Time To Sprint For Your Six-Pack

The Need For Speed: It's Time To Sprint For Your Six-Pack

Close your eyes and imagine the Olympic 100m final: some of the most powerful men and women on the planet are blasting down the track. Their arms and legs are pumping and exploding like powerful pistons. Immense force is being generated on both sides of the body as it pulls and twists the spine and body back and forth.

Sprint training involves high-intensity, all-out movement that engages your core muscles like no other exercise can in such a short duration."Whoaaaa….my core muscles have never been worked like that!?" This is the expression I usually hear from my clients after they go through one of their first sprint workouts. It's funny to see the surprise on their faces that their core, not their legs, get the brunt of the workout.

Summer is approaching, and there is no better time to get your core engaged like never before. Who doesn't want to look shredded in their bikini or board shorts this Summer? It's time to get out of the gym and head to the track!

Why is sprinting so good for your core?

The best exercises have two things in common that determine muscle function and growth: degree of muscle activation and length of time that muscle is under tension.

There is no exercise that generates more force in the abdominal musculature than sprinting, and therefore no exercise can mimic the developmental stimulus it provides.

How is the body is able to stay ridged and upright under this immense pressure? The abdominal wall elicits tremendous degrees of force and pressure stabilization. A monumental effort takes place to engage the entire abdominal cavity and forces engagement and stabilization of the trunk and internal organs.

This force is so powerful that even one 10-15 second sprint can induce massive muscular stimulus on the midsection.

First and foremost it's sprinting, not jogging ladies and gentlemen

The explosive power generated through sprinting can be done by anybody too. You just have to run at the maximum efforts your body can handle to fully engage your musculature.

It may seem awkward at first to run so fast, but proficiency at high intensity sprinting comes the same as with any exercise: through proper training and coaching.

Best of all, the workouts are short and fun! You will not be slogging through endless miles pounding the pavement, but rather getting in touch with your inner athlete.

In doing so, you will engage all the major muscles in your body, such as the arms, legs and glutes - and of course the core.

The Best Core Exercise in the World Needs to Burn Fat as well as Build Muscle

There are a lot of people with super strong cores, but they have excess body fat covering up their "internal six pack." To be considered the best ab exercise in the world you need to do two things: build muscle and burn fat. Sprinting accomplishes both feats with flying colors!

In addition, sprinting also gives the gift of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), which basically means there is an acute elevation in energy used even after the exercise has stopped.

EPOC causes a biochemical effect to burn excess fat stores to help your body recover from the performance surge you put it through propelling yourself down the track. Yes, sprinting is the gift that keeps on giving well after your workout is completed.

5 Tips to Get Started on Your Strongest Core Ever!

1. Warm-up well: jog for a few minutes followed by plyometric and mobility drills that include several sets of high knees, butt kickers, hip openers, strides to get up to race pace, etc; you NEVER want to sprint until you are properly warmed up and increasing the intensity SLOWLY is key with any sprint program.

2. Form is crucial: you sprint on your toes and balls of your feet, keep your arms bent at 90 degree angles at your sides (do not cross the body with your arms) while the hands reach levels between your shoulders and your eyes. Remember, your arms and legs are powerful pistons!

3. Push versus pull: your foot strike should push away from the ground from the hip (pushing backwards versus pulling from the front to the back). Many hamstrings have been pulled from not doing this properly.

4. Control your core: the core and low back should be engaged the entire time; do not collapse either one. Keep the chest upright and proud even in the forward lean as you hit your top speeds.

5. Run through the line: give yourself a good amount of room to finish and slow down properly. You never want to stop suddenly at the finish line. Glide through the finish and gradually slow up your muscles.

    Do You Have the Stubborn Fat Blues?
    Every year at about this time frustrated people around the globe look in the mirror and realize that their waist is larger, hips are wider, and their New Year’s resolve has fizzled.

    So what do you do about the stubborn and seemingly permanent fat?

    Sink into a depression?

    Well, the easiest thing to do is to throw a pity party. Then before you know it your feelings of self pity begin to snowball into a full blown case of the Stubborn Fat Blues.

    How do you know if you have the Stubborn Fat Blues?
    • Your pants are tighter today than they were a year ago
    • You’ve tried to lose weight only to fail.
    • You feel trapped.
    • You’re close to giving up on yourself.
    If you can relate to any of the above statements then you have the Stubborn Fat Blues—quite an unpleasant condition to have.

    Fortunately, there is a cure.

    It all starts with your mind. The thing about the Stubborn Fat Blues is that it affects your mind more than anything.

    You see, your mental state is critical in determining your shape and size. When you focus on all of the things that you hate about your current body like the size of your thighs, the shape of your butt, or the way your belly looks then you’re putting all of your energy on the negative.

    The more you think about how unhappy you are, the unhappier you will become.

    Makes sense, right?

    So instead of wallowing, use the following techniques to conquer the Stubborn Fat Blues:

    1. Take it one battle at a time.
    You may have 20, 50 or 100 pounds to lose before you reach your ideal weight—and, boy, that can be overwhelming. The truth is that weight loss like that won’t happen overnight—it takes months of dedication. It’s no wonder so many people simply give up.

    Don’t worry about winning the entire war today, instead focus on conquering one battle at a time. Take it one meal at a time, and one day at a time. A healthy meal, a good workout and you’ve won a battle. Remember, 100 pounds is broken down into 350,000 calories. Sure, that sounds like a lot, but all you have to do is focus on burning more calories than you take in today – in the end weight loss will be inevitable.

    2. Use a trigger. 
    How many times throughout your day do you find yourself plagued with negative thoughts? I’m too fat. I’ll never look as good as I used to. I’m not attractive. Yikes! Thoughts like these will ruin your chance at regaining your figure—they are total momentum killers.

    Here’s what I want you to do. Whenever a negative thought enters your mind instantly do the following:
    • Breathe out and squeeze your abs for 5 seconds – 3 times
    • Throw away any junk food within arms reach
    • Plan to exercise that day
    Make negative thoughts a trigger to take positive action toward your goal—the results will amaze you.

    3. See what you want.
    If you have weight to lose, mirrors are a nightmare. Every lump and pouch seems to jump out with alarming illumination. And it doesn’t help that most of us see things as worse than they really are.

    When was the last time that you closed your eyes and pictured the body that you wished you had? It may sound hokey, but I’m serious. Your mind is very impressionable, and when you bombard it with only the negative then you will be stuck on that image.

    Take time each day to visualize your ideal body. Close your eyes and put yourself in that ideal body – feel what it feels like to be fit and attractive. This exercise is a powerful way to fixate your mind on your goal in a way that will leave you no room for failure.

    4. Get serious.
    Sooner or later you will decide that you are fed up with the Stubborn Fat Blues. You will decide that your health is important. You will decide that you deserve to look great. And you will do what it takes to achieve amazing results.

    Sneaky Calorie Burning
    What are your plans for this weekend? A great way to promote weight loss is to pack your weekends with physical activities. Weed the garden, walk the dog, plan a bike trip, or clean out the garage. The key is to keep on moving.

    Turkey-Stuffed Bell Peppers
    Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring! These turkey-stuffed bell peppers are the perfect meal for those days when you’re bored of eating healthy. Shhhh, your taste buds won't suspect that this dish is low-carb and protein-filled. Serve over a bed of greens for a complete meal.

    Servings: 5

    Here’s what you need…
    • 5 organic bell peppers
    • 1 teaspoon olive oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 Tablespoons fresh basil, minced
    • 1 yellow onion, minced
    • 1 Tablespoon fresh rosemary, minced
    • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
    • dash of salt and pepper
    • 20 oz organic ground turkey, 99% fat free
    • 1 organic tomato, chopped
    • 3/4 cup spaghetti sauce
    • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    1. Bring a large pot of water to boil, add a pinch of salt. Cut the tops off the bell peppers and remove the seeds. Place in the boiling water, using a spoon to keep them submerged for 3 minutes or until the skin is slightly softened. Drain and set aside.
    2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
    3. In a large skillet heat the oil on medium. Add the garlic, basil, onion, rosemary, parsley, salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions begin to soften. Add the ground turkey and continue to heat until the meat is browned. Add the tomato and cook for another 2 minutes.
    4. Remove from heat. Pour the spaghetti sauce into the turkey mixture and mix well. Add the cheese and mix until well combined.
    5. Stuff each prepared bell pepper with the turkey mixture and place on prepared baking sheet. Cook for 15-20 minutes until the bell peppers are tender.
    Nutritional Analysis: One serving equals: 193 calories, 3 fat, 256mg sodium, 14g carbohydrate, 3g fiber, and 28g protein.
