US Sports Basketball: Four of Baylor Coach Nicki Collen’s Midseason Pick and Roll Adjustments and EPIC MATCHUP Türkiye vs. Serbia (Highlights)

  • By Grant Young

Midseason adjustments are vital for keeping the pick and roll offense effective as the basketball season unfolds.

While teams may find initial success with this strategy, opponents will quickly analyze and adapt to it. To counter these defenses, coaches need to make strategic adjustments.

One approach is to rotate different players into the roles of the ball handler and screener, creating mismatches and preventing defenses from settling into predictable patterns. Tweaking screen angles and timing can also disrupt defensive schemes.

Simple variations, like faking a screen or changing the roll angle, can create confusion for defenders. Recognizing defensive coverages is also essential—if opponents begin to switch or trap, exploiting rotation gaps through ball movement or off-ball screens becomes crucial.

Developing players’ decision-making abilities will be key. Practicing various scenarios allows them to read defenses quickly and react effectively. By continuously evaluating and adjusting strategies, teams can ensure the pick and roll remains a dynamic and potent offensive weapon throughout the season.

But these are all basic solutions to what can be a complex issue. This is why we’ve left the real analysis to Baylor University head women’s basketball coach Nicki Collen.

Nicki Collen became the Baylor women’s basketball head coach in 2021. She enters her fourth season at the helm in 2024-25, and has started the season with a 16-3 record. Collen came to Baylor from the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream franchise, where she spent the last three seasons as head coach. She earned WNBA Coach of the Year honors in her first season there and helped the franchise to the WNBA Playoff Semifinals.

Coach Collen’s ‘Nicki Collen - Pick and Roll Offense’ clinic contains a ton of fantastic insights that will help you understand what midseason adjustment you can make to the pick and roll to ensure it remains a high-level and efficient offense for the remainder of your season.

Ball Handling

Coach Collen discusses how one way that she tried to minimize turnovers within the pick-and-roll offense is by having all of her players practice ball handling for 5-10 minutes at the start of every practice.

The reason for this is that sloppy ball handling by either the guard who’s dribbling or the post player who could be receiving the pass on a roll can be a common cause for turnovers, which all basketball coaches know can be a death sentence.

Outside Hand Passing

null

In addition to focusing on ball handling, Coach Collen notes that it’s crucial players practice passing the ball with their outside and non-dominant hand in a pick and roll scenario.

This is because in many dribble drive situations off of the pick and roll, the only way a player can get a pass off in the correct location is by utilizing the off-hand. This might be to the roller or it might to be a wing player who gets open because their defender has to help defend the paint.

Also important in practice is that players are starting their pick and roll offense at free throw line extended rather than closer to the top of the key. Free throw line extended should always be the priority when it comes to beginning these offensive sets because it spaces the floor and provides optimal angles for the drive, roll, and kick.

Work Your Feet

Given the fatigue that inevitably sets in for any basketball player in the middle of a season, it’s common to see that players get lazy with their footwork in the pick and roll at this point in the year. This is why Coach Collen stresses footwork during the pick and roll segments of her practice.

To do this, Coach Collen has her guards stutter their feet when moving part of the screen set for them. Once this stutter occurs, they will be able to make a read on whether to pass to the roller, continue driving to the basket, or kick out to a player along the wing.

Another vital aspect of the pick and roll’s success is that the post player who sets the pick separates from the screen as quickly as possible and gets to their correct position. This is because the guard will depend on that player being an option to pass to while also keeping the lane uncongested.

In order to separate as efficiently as possible, the post player needs to have their pivots perfected regardless of where they’re rolling to after the screen. Clumsy footwork in this separation phase can ruin any execution the offense has brewing.

Twist the Screen

null

Another important concept that can add crucial layers to a basic pick and roll offense is what Coach Collen calls “twisting the screen”.

This essentially means that after the additional pick and roll (that should be around the free throw line extended) an extra wrinkle an offense can add is that the post player who sets the pick can pivot back around and set another screen for the same guard, which essentially serves as a misdirection that can throw the defender off guard.

The benefits to this are that it will open up for a baseline drive, a kick out to either corner, and/or set the post player up to roll into the paint or to get the upper hand on an offensive rebound.

This extra screen twist is perfect to institute into an offense in the middle of the season to throw defenses off balance and give them something else to prepare for.

US Sports Football: Put your 3 Deep Coverage in a Better Position with Zone Alert Rotations and US Sports Football Feat. Florida vs #4 Miami Highlights

  • By Coach Grabowski

Is your 3 deep zone always in the best rotation?  Or is the offense getting ready to target your static 3 deep zone?

This is something that Chris Lachney, defensive coordinator at Southeast Louisiana feels is important to putting your defenders in an optimal situation.

Sitting in a single version of Cover 3 against every formation or personnel group makes your defenders sitting ducks that the offense can now pick on.

Coach Lachney likes using 3 Deep Zone because of its ability to get 8 players into the run fit quickly. He certainly understands the weaknesses and how the coverage will be attacked, but they’ve added a concept they refer to as “Zone Alert” to get them into the best rotation against the formations and/or the personnel they are facing.

For Lachney it starts with well defined pieces of the puzzle.  The SCIF player has an important job.  Lachney explained exactly why they added verbs for better learning if the SCIF assignment. Instead of teaching just “Seam-Curl-Flat,” Lachney’s players are taught and understand it this way:

Protect the Seam

Cover the Curl

Tackle the Flat

Lachney gives the details of how they coach the SCIF in this video:

null

Why be Multiple?

For Lachney it goes back to putting his personnel in the best position for their skill sets.  Having multiple options for rotation for the different formations and personnel groups allows them to do that.

Lachney explains it here:

null

Lachney covers their rotations for the following situations with instructionals and game film:

2x2 Formations

3x1 Formations

Y-off Formations

Formation into Boundary

Here is an example with Mike in the 4-man rush:

null

Having these in their toolbox for their Cover 3 allows them to keep their players in the best position possible to take away what the offense will try to do. Instead of letting the defense target your static 3 deep coverage, make it more dynamic with the Zone Alert Concept.

Coach Lachney’s explains it all in his clinic, “The Zone Alert Concept for a More Dynamic Formation Match 3 Deep Zone.”

US Sports Baseball: Three Baseball Offseason Strength and Conditioning Essentials and Dodgers @ Diamondbacks Highlights

  • By Grant Young

All baseball coaches recognize the undeniable importance of strength and conditioning during the offseason, as it’s a crucial opportunity for athletes to enhance their physical readiness, improve endurance, and minimize injury risks as they gear up for the demanding season ahead.

However, many coaches lack a clear understanding of which techniques and exercises should be prioritized at this point in the season. While traditional strength training, like weightlifting, is commonly emphasized, it’s vital to go beyond these basics.

Coaches should focus on sport-specific conditioning that targets the unique requirements of baseball. This involves integrating dynamic exercises such as medicine ball drills, plyometrics, and rotational movements to mirror the actual actions performed during games.

Moreover, a comprehensive approach that includes recovery strategies and mobility work is essential for sustaining athletes’ capabilities and preventing injuries. Many coaches may underestimate the impact of incorporating yoga, dynamic stretching, and proper nutrition into their training programs. These elements not only enhance performance but also support players’ overall health throughout the season.

While all baseball coaches recognize and appreciate the significance of strength and conditioning during the offseason, bridging the gap in understanding which techniques to prioritize is crucial. By embracing a tailored, well-rounded training program, coaches can equip their players with the tools they need to excel on the field and ensure a successful, injury-free season.

This is why we’ve selected three offseason strength and conditioning exercises and techniques that high-level coaches and trainers swear by to help your team get right before Opening Day.

DJ Edwards - Proper Baseball Conditioning

DJ Edwards is the Owner and Director of Push Performance. He played college baseball at Metro State University and has his Performance Enhancement Specialist and the United States Weight Lifting Certification.

Coach Edwards has developed many programs for a wide range of elite athletes. He uses his knowledge in corrective exercise, flexibility limitations, and biomechanics to develop personalized programs for each client. He has worked with over 100 baseball players at all levels in this program.

Coach Edwards’ ‘Strength and Conditioning for Baseball Players’ course details what he considers the perfect conditioning practices for baseball players at any age and skill level.

Coach Edwards recommends two to three minutes of medicine ball work in any strength training program. These can be utilizing different planes of motion and arm angles that activate the many different arm muscles. Some examples of this can be medicine ball throws into a wall, overhead slams, or shotput tosses. The key with these is to prioritize both arms instead of just the throwing arm.

When it comes to conditioning, Coach Edwards explains that sprint intervals are a great way to simulate running the bases. More so, tempo runs (a jog into a sprint and back into a jog, or something similar) are another great way to mimic the cardiovascular demands that baseball requires.

A sprint interval example will be placing cones 50 yards out and have players sprint 10 yards. They then walk back to the starting point, sprint 30 yards, walk back, then sprint through the full 50 yards before taking a brief rest.

Nathan Hemphill - Velocity Gain in the Weight Room (Pitchers)

null

Nathan Hemphill began studying strength and conditioning during his undergraduate studies at Missouri State University in 2006. There, Coach Hemphill actively contributed to the strength and conditioning department, assisting in program implementation across all sports teams.

Summers were spent overseeing the strength and conditioning program for the St. Louis Cardinals, working with their AA Springfield team in 2008 and the Rookie Johnson City team in 2009. Driven by a passion to impart high-level athletic knowledge to younger athletes, he founded PSP3 (Premier Sports Performance) in March 2014.

In his ‘Strength & Conditioning for the High School Athlete’ course, Coach Hemphill details the precise steps he’d take to improve pitcher velocities.

He says that the most obvious way to do this to get stronger is by being consistent in the weight room. But the key is to know that at a certain point of strength and flexibility, there is to way to keep increasing velocity. In other words, a pitcher’s velocity will eventually plateau, regardless of how flexible they are or how heavy they can squat.

This is why Coach Hemphill emphasizes balancing out strength and flexibility to minimize injury risk. This will allow players to continue building and maintaining their strength and flexibility while remaining healthy enough to improve their mechanics on the mound, which is the next best way to improve velocity.

Steve Zawrotny - Romanian Dead Lift

Steve Zawrotny is one of just a handful of individuals with experience as an NCAA Div 1 pitcher and coach with the CSCS credential. His training programs - designed specifically for baseball and softball players - combine solid clinical research and Steve's 30 years of playing, coaching, & training.

He's a certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has a B.S. in Physical Education from BYU.

Coach Zawrotny’s ‘Arm and Bat Speed Training’ course details the Romanian dead lift (RDL), which is inarguably one of the best exercises a baseball player can employ during the offseason.

The RDL is a strength exercise that focuses on the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. Improving posterior chain strength and flexibility enhances power and stability during baseball movements like hitting and throwing is another benefit to RDLs.

Coach Zawrotny explains that this exercise helps prevent injuries by promoting proper lifting mechanics and developing core strength, which is essential for all baseball players, regardless of position. Plus an RDL can be done with minimal added weight, which decreases the risk of injury.

The Rock Almighty. Rise of the Illuminati and Charlie Kirk Sure Is A Strange 'Racist'

  • Author Kyle Seifert

Shrouded in Mystery and Myth

From Hollywood blockbusters to imagery found printed on US currency, the allure of secret societies has infiltrated the minds of people around the world. Shrouded in mystery, conspiracy, and myth, little is known about these top-secret groups and how they’ve influenced history and events throughout history. However, tracing back to the late 18th century, we can understand why many prominent individuals throughout the Enlightenment era wanted to create a place where they could push their agendas and share their ideology with others.

Away from the prying eyes of society and other influential organizations such as the church and local governments, The Illuminati quickly became one of the most well-known and important secret societies of the 18th century. With some believing that they still hold sway and power over current events to this very day, The Illuminati has captivated countless people around the world, becoming the topic of conspiracy, myth, and influencing popular culture.

An Era of Enlightenment and Secrecy

Throughout the late 1700’s the world was changing and evolving rapidly. With events such as the American Revolutionary War in 1775, to scientific advancements and political changes, these changes brought with them new ways of thinking which helped pave the way for many secret societies. The rise of secret societies and organizations such as the Illuminati gave progressive thinkers of the Enlightenment era a place to gather, discuss, and brainstorm under a structured system with like-minded individuals.

Many of these societies were invitation-only, and not every society shared the same ideology. This led to entirely new societies forming around the same secretive structure system that was rising in popularity at the time. Although many of these societies remained similar to one another, many had their own agendas and ideas and used their status within society or the workplace to promote their beliefs and agendas. Whether driven by science, politics, religion, or a combination of radical changes, these new secret societies would play a pivotal role throughout the 18th century and into the modern age.

While the Enlightenment era gave birth to many secret societies around the world, some have stood the test of time and continue to influence events to this day. Others such as The Ancient Noble Order of the Gormogons, or The Grand Orange Lodge, were short-lived with no record of accomplishments or goals. However, their secrecy and mysterious meetings have helped grow intrigue and mystery around the operations and agendas of secret societies as a whole.

Rise of The Illuminati

Founded in 1776 by Professor Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria, the Illuminati was formed with the stated goals of opposing superstition, obscurantism, and religious influence over public life as well as the abuse of state power. Professor of canon law and practical philosophy, Adam Weishaupt was one of the few non-clerical professors at the University of Ingolstadt in 1773.

Fed up with the religious influence and power that it held over him as an educator, he became heavily anti-clerical and devoted himself to finding a way to spread the ideas of enlightenment away from the watchful eyes of religious governing. This led him to found the secret Illuminati society in 1776 where he and other like-minded individuals could spread their ideas of enlightenment without religious influence or intimidation freely and on their terms.

It came as no surprise that many conservative and religious critics felt threatened and disgruntled by the formation of such a society. So much so that with encouragement from the Catholic Church, Charles Theodore, the Elector of Bavaria at the time outlawed such secret societies entirely in 1784, 1785, 1787, and again in 1790. While being outlawed and illegal, rumors began to spread about the group's activity. Sparking both interest and fear from the general population as well as many church and state officials.

Rumors and Propaganda

As the secret meetings and gatherings continued underground and away from the public eye, many rumors began to circulate about what their true intentions were. Those loyal to the church and the conservative way believed that many secret organizations such as the Illuminati were conspiring against their way of life, government, or religious institutions. Some of these rumors went as far as to blame the Illuminati for the French Revolution which fueled some people's distrust and dislike of the organization.

While many of these rumors and propaganda cannot be confirmed or denied with 100% certainty, they were used as a tool against the secret societies and convinced many of the general public to grow distrustful and even fearful of such groups. Even to this day, many believe that the majority of the world is controlled by societies such as The Illuminati which place “agents” within high-ranking government positions and businesses. Due to the secrecy of such societies and the fact that they remain so exclusive, it’s nearly impossible to differentiate between what is fact and fiction when it comes to their dealings in worldly affairs.

The Illuminati is also believed to hold great sway and power within the entertainment and music industry today. This can be backed by the fact that The Illuminati can be found in hit TV series, movies, and novels around the world. Some theorists also believe that the organization is responsible for pulling the strings within the production and marketing of modern music such as hip-hop. It is thought that they use these outlets as a way to further their agendas and influence society through cleverly crafted lyrics and videos to push the general population towards their “new world order.”

In Popular Culture

Throughout the years The Illuminati has been at the epicenter of myth and conspiracy. This has made the organization an easy way for many artists, filmmakers, and authors to create stories, games, and blockbuster films with The Illuminati playing a pivotal role. Everything from comic books and cartoons, to hit films such as Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code starring the likes of Tom Hanks, The Illuminati continues to live on through popular culture and can be found in many modern media such as some listed below.

The cartoon series Gargoyles

Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider

Netflix’s animation series Inside Job

Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, and Angels & Demons are both novels and films featuring The Illuminati

The MMORPG The Secret World video game

Street Fighter video games

These are just a few of the more modern outlets where The Illuminati can be found being used as inspiration. Throughout many outlets of popular culture as both a main focal point, or working behind the shadows in secrecy, The Illuminati has inspired many popular stories, games, books, comics, and music throughout the years.

Modern Day Illuminati

Many organizations around the world claim to stem from the original Illuminati of old, however, it’s believed that the original Illuminati did not survive their suppression in Bavaria in the late 18th century. Groups such as The Illuminati Order and The Ordo Templi Orientis have used and adapted the Illuminati name to be used within their societies today. Whether used as a title within the organization or the order name itself, there is no evidence of these groups having original ties with the original Illuminati.

Many theorists believe that the order is still active to this day and has been since its formation in 1776. Some believe that the group is responsible for world events such as the French Revolution, the Battle of Waterloo, and even the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Hidden behind the scenes and pulling the strings of current events to hasten what many call the “new world order” and their agenda. Many US presidents are being called out as members of the Illuminati due to their status, family history, position within office, and the power they hold.

Fact, or Fiction?

Perhaps there is a group of individuals who meet to decide the fate of the world, then again, perhaps not. What is known is that these societies still exist in one form or another, and have certainly captured the interest and attention of the public. From movies and TV shows to video games, literature, and music, the mystery of The Illuminati continues to captivate and intrigue people around the world.

So whether The Illuminati is actively influencing society from behind the scenes today, or if they truly died out in the late 18th century during their persecution, the secret organization will continue to live on in the minds of conspiracy theorists, historians, and populations around the world. Playing an important part in modern culture and history alike, the myth and mystery of secret organizations such as The Illuminati has helped shape the world into what it is today.

US Sports Football: Are You Causing a 14 Point Turnaround...Against Your Team? And #8 Mater Dei vs #2 Bishop Gorman HSFB Highlights

  • By Coach Grabowski

For many of us, it is the offseason.  It is a time of development for us as coaches and especially for our players.

When I go back through my 30 years of coaching the one physical component I know there never is enough of is SPEED!

Having spent 30 years coaching, I can admit that unless a football coach has experience in track, he really doesn’t know how to train speed. I see the same mistakes made over and over, and utilizing track knowledge would be an incredibly smart decision.

There is a coach who is perfectly suited to learn from and apply his knowledge to your players’ development, and that is Tony Holler.

Tony Holler is the track coach at Plainfield North High School. He has 40 years of coaching experience in football, basketball, and track. He is a member of Illinois Track & Field Hall of Fame and Co-director of Track Football Consortium along with Chris Korfist. Holler created the revolutionary, "Feed the Cats" program in 1999.

If you don’t know Tony, here’s his background and some background on how he developed “Feed the Cats:”

So let’s get into it…

We are either here or we’ve been here...believers in the GRIND. It’s a concept that is in the psyche of football coaches and in many ways our country as a whole.  You gotta GRIND! Holler identifies it as the “religion of football.”

2019 NFL 1st-team All Pro Christian McCaffery doesn’t think so as Holler explains in this video:

Holler explains how subscribing to the grind is like a 14-point turnaround.  For everyday that you go out and do a bunch of senseless conditioning, you are missing out on an opportunity to train speed and power.  It is like being on the 1 yard line and throwing an interception that goes 99 yards for a touchdown the other way.  Prioritizing speed and power is a must. Watch:

The other mistake I see is equating speed training as something only applying to skill players.  IT IS FOR EVERY ATHLETE ON YOUR TEAM! SPEED AMPLIFIES POWER.  Holler illustrates this concept with video of JaDaveon Clowney in this video:

Clowney ran 4.53 at 266 at the NFL combine. Your players need to get off the ball and be explosive! They may not carry that explosion down the field for 40 yards like Clowney, but I promise, a big man with the explosiveness off the line will be winning his match-up often.

OK, maybe you are seeing the value now, but how do we get “in-shape?”

Holler explains how stacking anaerobic work will get your team aerobically fit.  He talks about that and Brian Kula’s work with McCaffery in this video:

What does this look like for your team? Holler explains the “Performance Day” in this video.

There are so many things in football that are preference and style designed to fit your team, but the concepts of developing speed are universal.  I can’t recommend what Holler has put together enough!

He has 4 courses he identifies as essential to upgrading your team’s performance this off season:

Sprint Based Football

Sprint Based Football II

The Offseason Speed Workout

The X-Factor

One thing about this offseason is undeniable. You can’t go wrong in making your team faster and more explosive.  Do not let the opportunity pass!
