US Sports Hockey: Hockey Practice Plan: Maximize Development in Every Session and Alessia Baechler

  • By Jackson Chlebowy

Designing a great hockey practice plan isn’t just about filling the hour—it’s about using that time to maximize player development, build habits, and prepare for real-game situations.

In this guide, you’ll get:

- A complete breakdown of how to structure your practice

- Example drills for each time segment (from warm-up to game play)

- Two proven drills pulled from elite-level coaching clinics

- Links to video demonstrations of featured drills

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why a Hockey Practice Plan Matters

As a coach, you have a limited window to teach, correct, and motivate. A well-built plan keeps players engaged and ensures you’re hitting the right development goals each day.

A simple 60-minute practice might look like this:

0–10 minutes: Dynamic Warm-up – Get players moving and focused

10–25 minutes: Skill Development – Build core puck and skating skills

25–40 minutes: Situational Drills – Reinforce breakout habits and reads

40–50 minutes: Small-Area Games – Build pressure, pace, and creativity

50–60 minutes: Special Teams/Scrimmage – End with energy and fun

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

0–10 min: Dynamic Warm-Up

Drill 1: 3-Lane Warm-Up Skate

Objective: Activate key muscle groups and improve skating coordination

How it Works:

- Players skate in 3 lanes across the ice

- Each lane includes a different skating element (quick feet, crossovers, edge work, backward)

- Add pucks in later rounds to challenge puck control

Coaching Tips:

- Keep reps short and high energy

- Integrate communication (e.g., call for pucks, tap sticks, shout colors)

- Emphasize balance and edge control

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10–25 min: Skill Development

Goal: Build and refine technical skills in a focused, high-rep environment.

Work on: Skating, Shooting, Passing, Stickhandling, etc

Drill 2: Passing Progression Series (3 drills, 1 set-up)

null

Passing Progression Series

Objective: Improve passing accuracy and awareness in multiple game-like situations

How it Works: Three-part drill series

- Stationary Passing – Players pass while standing still

- Passing Under Pressure – Add light pressure to challenge quick decisions

- Passing on the Move – Players pass while skating forward and backward

Coaching Points:

- Emphasize crisp tape-to-tape passes

- Keep head up and communicate through each rep

- Smooth transitions between stages for realistic pace

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

25–40 min: Situational Drills

Goal: Teach team concepts like breakouts, offensive entries, or D-zone coverage

Drill 3: 2-on-1 Continuous

Objective: Reinforce offensive decision-making under pressure

- Drill starts with a 2-on-1 attack

- Defender stays, two new attackers enter for a new 2-on-1

- Cycle continues

Variations:

- Limit passes

- Reward goals with an extra attacker

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

40–50 min: Small-Area Games

Goal: Push tempo, compete, and develop under pressure

Drill 4: Corner Battles

Small area battle

Objective: Build compete level, puck protection, and angling

- 1v1 or 2v2 in a corner or below the goal line

- Play for 20–30 seconds max

- Winner earns possession, next players jump in

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

50–60 min: Scrimmage or Special Teams

Goal: Reinforce power play and penalty kill systems, finish with energy, have fun!

Drill 5: Sled Dog Race Drill

Sled Dog Race

Objective: Build explosive lower-body power and skating strength through resistance

How it Works:

- One player kneels on the ice

- A partner grabs their stick or jersey and pulls them to the far blue line

- Run it as a race or timed event for fun competition

Coaching Points:

- Emphasize strong posture and stride from the pulling player

- Reinforce lower-body drive and arm movement

- Use cones or designated lanes to stay organized

Drill 6: Controlled Scrimmage (Half-Ice with Constraints)

Add constraints like:

- Goals only off passes

- One-touch rule

- Only 2 passes allowed in the zone

Let players have fun but still build habits.

  • Author Haris Alvi

World Cup Tickets: Spanish midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo, a standout performer for Club América, has recently opened up about the increasing conjecture regarding his potential role in the Mexican national squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Fidalgo, who has acquired the Mexican population, is now theoretically capable of representing El Tri, but he has highlighted that a national team call-up is not something he is taking for granted.

His future, both at the club and globally, remains unstipulated as the FIFA World Cup 2026 looms large on the horizon. As expectation continues to shape for the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will mark an important moment with matches presented diagonally across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, many enfranchised companies are being considered as part of expanded national squad schedules.

Fidalgo’s Focus on the Present as Mexico Eyes World Cup

The event will kick off at the fabled Estadio Azteca, and for Mexico, playing on home soil brings both great chance and huge pressure. Amid these circumstances, Álvaro Fidalgo’s name has surfaced among the possible accompaniments to the national troop pool. However, the Spaniard remains humble and measured in his method, making it clear that his chief focus is on the current second rather than on hypothetical states connected to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Fidalgo recently spoke queries nearby his future in a candid manner, admitting that his present situation is shaped not only by his footballing services but also by bond dynamics and training choices. He revealed that his existing contract with Club América is set to expire in the coming year, and no extension has been agreed upon. This raises questions about his long-term presence in Liga MX and his potential obtainability for the Mexican national squad as it prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Fidalgo Reflects on Uncertainty and the Road to the FIFA 2026

Speaking openly, Fidalgo specified, I don’t know how these upcoming months will unfold. I have a one-year agreement, and it’s a complicated topic. There’s a director who may not fancy me, and I can’t predict what will happen to me in the short or long term. His words underline the uncertainty that can shape a player’s course, especially when the stakes are as high as receiving a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 squad.

Despite the gossip about the FIFA World Cup 2026 and Fidalgo’s suitability, the midfielder has chosen not to make assumptions or declare himself a candidate. Instead, he has remained absorbed in delivering his best presentations with Club América. In what has been one of his most creative seasons to date, Fidalgo has continued to validate his value on the pitch through technical skill, originality, and tactical intelligence.

These qualities have made him a fan favorite and a reliable contributor in Liga MX, but he remains cautious about reflecting his international predictions. He remarked, Honestly, if you ask me if I have predictable myself for this, the answer is no. I prefer to focus on the contemporary and what is happening now. Thinking about a potential call-up seems disrespectful to other Mexican players who are also excelling in my location.

Fidalgo Praises Mexico’s Midfield Talent Ahead of FIFA 2026

Fidalgo’s humility and respect for the Mexican football attitude were further evident when he was aware of the depth of talent in the national squad’s midfield. As Mexico prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026, knowing the right blend of skill and form will be crucial. Fidalgo praised several domestic talents, including Erik Lira, Edson Álvarez, Luis Romo, Carlos Rodríguez, and rising star Elías Montiel. Of Montiel, he said he is a very, very good actor, showing his respect for the initial group of Mexican footballers.

This gesture copies Fidalgo’s consciousness that, while he may be capable of playing for Mexico, the rivalry for places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 group is fierce and filled with deserving applicants. As one of the co-host states for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Mexico will be looking to make a deep run in the competition, chiefly with the added stimulus of playing key competitions on home soil.

This unique variety of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will feature an expanded preparation with more teams, more matches, and more chances for players to make history. The choice of accepted players like Fidalgo contributing to the squad adds a fascinating layer to team selection. These companies often bring a varied set of participations and a dissimilar strategic outlook, which can be helpful in stressful settings during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

World Cup Tickets: Balancing Loyalty and New Talent in Mexico’s FIFA 2026 Squad

Fidalgo’s situation highlights the wider challenges national team coaches face as they build their squadrons for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Balancing loyalty to long-serving national squad players with the need to integrate fresh talent and naturalized citizens is never easy. With head coach Javier Aguirre potentially having different preferences, Fidalgo recognizes that assortment is not something he can regulate.

The midfielder has made it clear that he is willing to donate if called upon, but won’t be agitated for a spot. His expert attitude adds credibility to his acts and sets an example for how players should handle FIFA World Cup 2026 speculation. For fans and analysts alike, Álvaro Fidalgo remains a convincing figure in the FIFA World Cup 2026 conversation. His recitals in Liga MX continue to catch the eye, and his eligibility adds valuable suppleness to Mexico’s midfield options.

Yet, as Fidalgo has emphasized recurrently, the road to the FIFA World Cup 2026 is long, and nothing is guaranteed. Injuries, tactical vicissitudes, and competition can all shift the landscape between now and 2026. As the FIFA World Cup 2026 draws near, the stories of companies like Álvaro Fidalgo will continue to shape the description. Whether or not he ultimately wears the Mexican jersey in the world’s principal period.

FIFA 2026 Tickets: Alvaro Fidalgo’s Consistency and Growth Ahead of the World Cup

His journey reflects the evolving nature of global football and the unique dynamics of a dual-national picture. The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be a competition unlike any other, and as preparations intensify, every match, every training session, and every decision will count. Fidalgo knows this better than anyone and is making the only way he knows how by giving everything on the pitch today while letting the future unfold on its terms.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to be more than a display of elite talent; it will be a tribute to diversity and shared ideas. Álvaro Fidalgo’s expedition fits perfectly within that narrative. Through discipline, humility, and staunch consistency, he has emerged as a possible wildcard for the final squad. US Sports Football: Sonny Dykes Teaches You How to Put Together an Offense and Raiders Vs Patriots Game 1 Highlights

  • By Coach Grabowski

As your season wraps up, or as you are preparing to get your camp going in early 2021, it’s time to take a look at what you have available with your personnel and put together a plan that best fits them.  Head coach at SMU Sonny Dykes has a detailed plan in how they go about putting together their offense.

A lot of coordinators start with looking at the quarterback.  Let’s face it, he will be a key piece in making decisions and moving the ball down the field.  However, Coach Dykes looks at the QB last.

For him, it is very important to understand who the guys are upfront, and what they allow the offense to do.  He covers two distinctly different scenarios with evaluation:

Bigger offensive linemen “Road Graders”

- Bigger splits to create 1 on 1’s

- Pass Pro vertical sets and stop bull rushers

- Create lanes for the QB to see/throw through/run through

- Run game - simple and downhill (inside zone and draw)

Smaller and quicker “Athletes”

- Smaller splits allows more double teams

- More athletic/ability to pull and gap scheme (can pull C, G, or T)

- Set more firm - don’t allow penetration and adjust to pass rush

- Allow more run game diversity, set up Play Action, RPO

- More of a lateral run game (OZ)

The five guys up front are the most important organization on the team.  Coach Dykes calls the “Grinders, leaders, glue guys that allow you to become a tough football team.” They need to be the starting point of determining what you run. The offense always must be adjusted to fit them first.

Next, Coach Dykes looks at skill players starting with the wide receivers. Are they bigger guys or smaller quicker guys?

- Smaller quicker create 1 on 1 options

- Bigger jump balls/be physical

Then evaluate the running backs.

- Downhill guy

- Make people miss guy

- Tailor make plays to their strengths

Finally, he evaluates the Quarterback. Can he run? That’s a game changer.  A running QB opens diversity in offense and makes him the great equalizer.

After evaluating those guys, another critical piece which the coach looks for is tight ends and fullbacks.  Many teams have to “create” these players - borrow them from the defense or move them from another position.  Coach feels everyone has a fullback on their team.  You just have to look for him.

- A fullback changes everything

- Football was a 21 personnel game

Advent of the spread and Air Raid saw a move to 11 then 10 personnel. Defenses adjusted like they always do to offense:

- When it’s 10 personnel the defense only has 5 gaps to control

- Defense can get creative with what you are doing up  front

Adding a fullback into your offense can create 6 and 7 man blocking surfaces.  This forces the defense to commit more defenders to be gap sound and therefore can affect their ability to blitz.  The chalk goes back to the offense! Dykes feels that today’s defenses are not designed to hold up against 12 and 21 personnel.

He points out that you must always find a way to get the best players on the field, and a good offensive system has enough diversity in the offense to do that.

His final piece of advice in designing the offense is to remember in critical situations, “players not plays.” Great players make great plays. Design the plan with that in mind.  The game is about fundamentals - teaching guys how to block and tackle and utilize personnel.

Coach illustrates how a single play - what he believes is the best in football, the “Cross,” can provide the versatility to adapt to personnel. He notes that it is difficult to cover if you understand the details.

Here is the play and coaching points:

Split End (9)

- Must outside release

- Restack, get vert, bottom numbers

- Get shoulder square and run as fast as you can

- Trying to get safety off the has if 2 safety look

- 1 safety/man you can get the ball

Slot (3)

- Option route - 5 yard option route

- Looks like out, can sit vs zone and settle

- Can get creative with this route and adjust to fit personnel

- Sell the play with eyes on the 9 and pivot doesn’t happen as fast and qb can stay on the read longer

- Wes Welker route

- Can run it out of backfield -can turn in

Y (5)

- Go under Sam over Mike

- Release flat and you must get overtop of the linebacker

- Eyes back to QB after clearing him

- If grass, you can throttle down (not settle)

- Man coverage stay on the run

- Run OB 21 yards down the field

- Man coverage=stair climb and get flat to stay friendly for QB

Backside (2)

- Post-Curl

- Critical that P/C is adjustable rout

- Make it such that it is 4th read timing

- Years where it’s their most thrown/completed

- Push to 12, toe in the ground sell post to 17 yards, stick toe in ground and find grass back to the quarterback

(4) Running Back

- Protect to swing

- Stretch to bottom of numbers to move the whole player out of the post curl

QB

- Progression = MOR to Option to Cross to PC to Swing

Coach goes over the route in film here:

Coach Dykes provides a powerful plan for building your offense next season in his clinic “How to Put Together an Offense.”  The steps you take this off season are critical in best matching your personnel to your plans.  As coach said, “Players not Plays.” Be sure to check this entire clinic out.

The Rock Almighty: Would Jesus be Welcomed at Your Church? And Stand Up Church!

  • Author Garfield Gregoire

In looking at the above question, it is quite possible that a professing Christian may wonder if this is not a silly question to ask – because you, being a Catholic or Protestant, is more likely to believe and say: Of course, Jesus would be welcomed at our Church and that you and your Church would be ready and willing to believe and do all that He says. But despite you saying that, I would caution you to be a bit more careful in assuming you and your Church would be so ready to welcome Christ – especially when He begins to speak to your Church. But why say such a thing? Let me explain.

People can Profess to Believe on Christ but not Believe what He says

Millions profess to believe on Christ - believing their Church or religious organization is in fellowship with Jesus Christ and God is in their Church. But do you know that while people can profess to believe on Christ, they can still not believe what He says or command them to do? Let us look at an example of this -as revealed in the book of John.

John 8 declares that as Jesus spoke to the people of his day, it says, “… many believed on him” (verse 30). But as you continue to read further on in this same chapter of the Bible, you will find that those many who initially believed on Christ, suddenly turned on Him – by disagreeing with the things he was saying; they fell into such a deep state of disagreement with him that they came to a point of wanting to kill Him (John 8:37).

Having read this, is it not amazing how people can profess to believe on Christ but at the same time these Jews were not willing to believe what He was saying to them; they just had a dislike and a disagreement with what Christ was saying to them; and so, they shut their ears (their heart) from seeing the truth.

Millions Who Profess Christ today do not Believe all that Christ says

Your Church and Pastor would is likely to emphatically say we are not like those Jews who refuse to believe all that Christ said, but would believe his words and do all that He commands us to do. But are you sure?

Let’s imagine that Jesus Christ – being a young man between the age of 32 and 33 - were to come to your Church or to the Catholic Church (the Vatican) and in addressing your congregation, Jesus, for example, began to say these words: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matt. 5:17).

Now, let us think for a moment on this: Jesus is in your Sunday worshipping Church that believe you are under grace and therefore God no longer has any law we must obey because you are now free from the law; you believe God sent Jesus to free you from the law (the Ten Commandments). So, what Jesus just said here to your Church is something that you no longer believe or accept as true; Jesus has now said something you are in disagreement with – because you do not believe that you must continue to keep the Ten Commandments – which include the fourth commandment to keep the Sabbath holy.

So, here now is a problem: You believe God no longer has any law you must obey and now here comes Jesus -the one you profess to believe in - saying that which is the very opposite of what you and your Church believe. In other words, you have a vitally important disagreement with Jesus Christ, because your belief is different than what Christ is telling you; and at such a moment, your Church is not now happy with what this young man – the Son of God, is telling you and your Church; you do not like what He is saying because your belief that the law has been done away is in conflict with Christ who told you to not even think that way.

Jesus is The Word of God

Now you may say, that if you really knew in your heart the person speaking to your Church was the actual Jesus who walked the earth almost 2000 years ago, you would believe Him and do what He says - rather than to believe in the in imaginary scenario of Jesus coming to your Church – as spoken of here. But have you considered that the words of the real Jesus are in the Bible, or that the Bible is actually the word of God in print?

In John 1:1, Jesus (before He became flesh) existed with God as the very Word of God; it says: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The “Word” of God comes from a Greek word which means “spokesman” – meaning that the Word or the one who became Jesus was the one who spoke for God, and the things God the Father told Him do speak are written in the Bible – making the Bible, the very word of God – given to us in print. Jesus himself said the Father told him what to say (John 12:49); and so, the very words of the living Christ are there for us to heed and obey; we do not have to have the literal person of Christ coming to speak to us -as God speaks to us from the pages of the Bible; and so, the point is that Jesus is speaking – telling people we must keep the Ten Commandments; that we are to keep the Sabbath holy and not to think He came to destroy the law. But as you can see, this professing Christian world continues to reject what Christ said; they refuse to listen but would rather follow the traditions of men who teaches Christ came to do away with the law rather than believe what the living Christ who continues to say from the bible: “Think not that I came to destroy the law ….”. Millions of Church goers disagree with Christ by continuing this false belief and practice of believing Jesus came to do away with the law of God. I ask again, are you sure Jesus would be welcomed in your Church? If you do not now believe what He tells you now from the Bible – especially in relation to the keeping of the Ten Commandments, don’t be so sure Jesus would be welcomed in your Church.

Watch Germany

(I would like to add an unrelated comment here – by saying that I have been writing articles here on Article Biz telling people that Bible prophecy has forewarned that a union or federation of ten nations are to rise up out of the current European union - led by Germany - which is going to become a military powerhouse – leading to World War III – resulting in a third of the American people dying of nuclear bombs - which are going to be dropped on our cities.

Germany was involved in World War I and World War II and they are certainly now rising up to lead Ten European nations to turn and rend our nation in the final World War III; And in light of the fact that we are headed in the direction of the coming fulfillment of this major end time prophecy, I would like to point out some of the News related to this rise of Germany to become a military powerhouse.

Notice this headline from News week – dated May 2025:

“German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to turn the Bundeswehr into the strongest conventional army in Europe by giving it all the financial resources it needs to become so. Merz also said he would introduce a new volunteer military service.”

The Newsweek Report goes on to say:

"This is more than appropriate for the most populous and economically strongest country in Europe," Merz said of his plans for the Bundeswehr, POLITICO reported. "Our friends and partners also expect this from us, and what's more, they are actually demanding it."

Notice another report form Reuters:

Berlin (Reuters) – Germany is preparing a wave of multi-billion -euro procurement orders, including 30 Eurofighter jest, up to 3,000 armored vehicles, and as many as 3,500 Patria infantry fighting vehicles …”

The report states it is part of the Chancellor of Germanys push to build Europe’s most powerful conventional army, “aiming to reduce reliance on an unpredictable ally, the United States, and take greater responsibility for European security.”

President Trump has all along - expressed his desire for Europe to become militarily independent of the United States and recently entered into a massive trade deal with Europe in July 2025; and included in that deal, the European union agreed to purchase significant amounts of U.S. military equipment.” Knowing what Bible prophecy says about the great harm a United Europe is going to bring to the United States, one has to realize that the United States selling its military equipment to Europe is likened to creating a Frankenstein monster that turns on its creator.

To people’s mind this may sound unbelievable - too fantastic to accept that our nation is going to be destroyed in warfare by European powers, but almighty God – your creator says it is going to HAPPEN; it is surely going to come to pass. The people of Noah’s day would not believe a worldwide flood was coming but it did; the great Babylonian kingdom never thought it would fall but it did, and so did the mighty Roman empire, but it too fell.

People are going to caught off guard and be caught in trap when all these things suddenly come upon our people; Jesus said, “For as a snare shall it come up on all them that dwell on the face of the earth” (Luke 21:35). It is only God’s true servants who believe and understand these dire prophecies and are watching world events that are going to be counted worthy to escape these things- while the rest of the world will be snared and taken. I tell you we are living in very dangerous times, and though it may not seem that way to you, we are a nation in trouble; troubles are coming our way in an intensified form and no President is going to be able to save us. Jesus told us to watch the things going on; we all have a responsibility to watch for these prophecies of God to come to pass, but unfortunately, not everyone truly believe what God says; and for those failing to believe God, they are going to be caught off guard when these things suddenly come upon the world).

If anyone is interested knowing where the United States is spoken of in prophecy - please go here https://www.amazon.com/America-Prophecy-Israel-people-consider-ebook/dp/B0C4M8R77J

I am an old man who has, long ago, came to the realization that this professing Christian world – with all its Mega Churches and various denominations do not proclaim the true teaching of the Bible - as they fail to correctly teach many vitally important doctrinal truths of the Bible.

US Sports Track and Field: Two Valuable Hammer Throw Training Tips and European Throwing Cup Nicosia 2025 Highlights

  • By Grant Young

The journey from being a good hammer thrower to a great one often hinges on subtle coaching nuances and slight shifts in hammer throw workouts that may not always be immediately visible.

While an athlete might have the physical prowess and a fundamental understanding of the sport, it is often the less obvious elements introduced by a knowledgeable coach that can unlock the athlete's full potential. These small coaching details contribute to refining skills and enhancing performance in ways that can be transformative.

The impact of tailored feedback during training sessions cannot be understated; it allows athletes to discover and fine-tune their unique throwing styles. Coaches help cultivate an environment where athletes can develop confidence in their abilities and learn to tackle the mental aspects of competition, which can significantly differentiate a good performance from a great one.

The relationship between coach and athlete plays a pivotal role in nurturing the right mindset. A great coach knows how to inspire their athlete, fostering resilience and a sense of purpose that can elevate competition outcomes. As athletes learn to embrace challenges and visualize success, they often find themselves approaching competitions with a new level of composure and determination.

The evolution from good to great in hammer throwing illustrates how small but intentional guidance from a coach can shift an athlete's trajectory. These understated yet critical contributions create a ripple effect, influencing not just technique but the overall approach to both training and competition, leading to extraordinary results.

With this in mind, we have pulled two vital hammer throw tips from two proven track and field coaches that could end up becoming key in your quest to unlock the potential that your hammer throwers are destined for.

Paddy McGrath - Swings

Patrick McGrath is a 1995 graduate of Manhattan College and a former track and field Olympian and current assistant coach at Manhattan College and founder of The New York Hammer Squad. He oversaw the trio of Nina Bjorkman, Lasma Padedze and Alexandra Preckajlo that accounted for two golds, three silvers, one bronze and 54 total points at the 2021 MAAC Outdoor Women's Track & Field Championship.

Following the season, he helped Rudy Winkler to the USA Championship in the hammer throw and a seventh place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

With experience at the international, collegiate and high school levels, McGrath has mentored NCAA, Senior National, Junior, and Youth champions. Ten of his athletes have won high school national titles, and four have claimed New York State championships. McGrath also coached Track and Field News' 2013 High School Boys Athlete of the Year. In 2019, three of his Manhattan throwers qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regionals.

In his ‘Athlete Development: How Rudy Winkler Went From Beginner to American Record’ clinic, Coach McGrath details how a consistent dedication to the technical work is needed to be great, and that starts with the swing.

Coach McGrath noted how he likes to see the ball in front of the thrower as they prepare their swing. For a right-handed thrower, their weight should be on the left while they’re singing on the right side.

A term that he loves using with his athletes is “brush the hair” when discussing how close he wants the hammer swing to be to their head. Of course, they mustn’t get too close where they run a risk of whacking their head with the hammer.

Another training strategy that he likes athletes to use is starting the swing with three fingers, moving down to two fingers, and then ultimately finishing with only swinging while using their pinky finger. This is so the athlete learns to let the ball do its own and create and sustain its own momentum, which is crucial for conserving energy.

Nathan Ott - Catch

Nathan Ott begins his third season guiding Penn State’s throws group in 2024-25. During his coaching career, Ott has coached All-Americans in each and every one of the throws events. In his first two season with the Nittany Lions, Ott has mentored a pair of First Team All-Americans and has seen three school records toppled.

During the summer of 2023, Ott returned to the World Athletics Championships, this time with a contingent of four professional hammer throwers under his guidance. Brooke Andersen (U.S.A.), Nayoka Clunis (Jamaica), Beatrice Llano (Norway), and Stamatia Scarvelis (Greece) traveled to Budapest with Ott as their coach. Clunis became the first Jamaican hammer thrower ever to make the World Championship final in the event.

In his ‘Hammer Training: Tales of Connection and Engine Work’ clinic, Coach Ott discusses how his “catch” term is a core part of solidifying a hammer throw’s technique.

Coach Ott explains that the catch is the point where an athlete reestablishes double support in their throw.

He goes on to note that good catches have weight firmly on the left side (if the athlete is a right-handed thrower). The thrower can’t be collapsing on the right side or aggressively dropping, instead being stable once the right foot touches.

Because of this good connection, the athlete will immediately become capable of working on an effective implementation which will lead to a good throw.

A poor catch is when the weight collapses into the right leg, where the athlete isn’t immediately able to explode out of that position. The ball should always be back and the athlete should keep connected with it.
