Howard’s Ike Advances to the NCAA East Quarterfinals

Third-year hurdler moves on; sophomore sprinter comes up short

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 23, 2019) – Howard University junior Oluchi Ike (Upper Marlboro, Md.) inched one step closer to Austin after surviving and advancing to the NCAA East 400-meter hurdles Quarterfinals with a 58.81 mark. As a result, the Maryland product finished with one of the fastest non-automatic qualifying times.

“Oluchi [Ike] went out and did exactly what she set out to do [and] qualified for the next round,” said Howard Director of Track & Field David Oliver. “She had a few shaky hurdles in the race, but she has put herself in a great position to make it to the [NCAA] semifinals in Austin [Texas].”

Presented on US Sports Net By StrengthCoach.com!
"When I first got into MLS in 2007, StrengthCoach was a resource that really helped me learn about the 'best practice' methodology of the top people in the industry. Since then, it has remained an indispensable part of my 'network'.  I think every strength coach needs to stay in the network and communicate on a weekly basis with his/her peers, and StrengthCoach.com is a viable tool that I use to do that. StrengthCoach.com is directly responsible for me meeting people like Patrick Ward, Charlie Weingroff, Tim Vagen, and Bill Hartman-- all coaches who have made me a better professional!"   Dave Tenney, Seattle Sounders FC, Fitness Coach

Ike moved on to Friday’s quarterfinals set for 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium, hosted by the University of North Florida. For her to reach Austin, she must finish in the top 12 with either an automatic bid or top 3 non-automatic qualifying time.

Other notable Bison in action included second-year sprinter Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) falling just short of the quarterfinals by one-hundredth of a second.

“My heartbreaks for Ozioma [Scott],” Director Oliver stated. “Missing out on the [NCAA] quarterfinals by one-hundredth of a second is a hard pill to swallow. I've been there as a student-athlete and it haunts you a bit [and] leaves you wondering what more could I have done to get that fraction of a second.”

Despite the tough setback, Scott’s season is not over as she will represent HU in Saturday’s 4x400 relays.

“She is a sophomore,” Director Oliver added. “She will definitely be back next year. She will have that extra fire for her 4x4 leg on Saturday night.”

Ike, Scott, junior Sydney Benson (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and sophomore Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) race Saturday (May 25) at 9:25 p.m.

“Both [Ike and Scott] ran their second fastest times of their careers,” Director Oliver concluded. “This was their first time competing on this stage. In Ike's case, she survived and advanced, [and] unfortunately for Scott, it just wasn't enough."

After Ike’s quarterfinals race, Gbai will compete individually in the NCAA East 200-meter dash First Round. Friday night’s event starts 7:30 p.m.

Blessings Follow in Serving God
By: Joseph B. Glosenger

I'm writing this article to encourage whoever reads to devote their life to God; true blessings come to us when we do the works which God has for us. God pays us in hefty dividends for helping others by his guidance. In this article, I will list some of the major benefits you'll receive for serving God as he leads.

First, we'll talk about the sow/reap principle:

The Sow/Reap Principle

What you sow, you will reap; this is one of God's fundamental laws. Whatever we do to and for other people will always come back to us, both in this earth, and in the new earth.

Reaping what we sow works like this: If we spend our time being evil to other people, our lives will be unhappy, and painful. Nothing will work out for us. On the other hand, if we spend our time doing good for other people, we will receive good in life. God made it this way. It actually is the absolute best way for God to help people to do good in their lives.

There are many references to this principle in the bible; here are a few verses to show the truth of this doctrine:

Proverbs 12:21 "There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief."

Proverbs 11:18 "The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward."

Galatians 6:7-8 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."

John 4:36 "And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together."

God is Very Wise to Order Creation in This Way

It is wonderful to know that by doing good for others, it is guaranteed that good will come back to us. If you think about it, this is a very intelligent way for God to order his creation. He made it this way because it is the best way to guide his creatures to do good for others, because good deeds are rewarded. This shows something of the deep wisdom of God.

God blesses us when we do good. If you dedicate your life to doing God's will, he will have all kinds of good deeds for you to do in the world. After a little while, your life will be quite blessed, as you receive good things in return for doing as God guides.

There are many manifestations of this blessing. You will receive unexpected gifts from God. Your resources will stretch farther. You will be protected from evil by God. Good things will happen for you. People will be more decent to you, in general. When you sow good for others as God leads you to, you reap good in your own life:

Proverbs 16:7 "When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him."

On to our next example of the blessings which we receive from God in serving him:

"Ask, and Ye Shall Receive"

If you are sowing good things for other people, God wants to reward you for your good works. But, we must ask God for things sometimes, to be able to receive them. I've heard people say before that they don't want to ask for things for themselves from God, because they feel that it would be selfish. But, who knows better what a person needs from God, than the person themself? God wants us to ask him for what we need; it actually grieves him when we do not.

And, Christ himself has exhorted us to ask for what we need from God:

John 16:24 "Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."

1 John 3:22 "And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight."

God loves to pay his devoted workers for their good deeds. Consider it your worker's wages. Do not be afraid to ask for things, and do not think that you are being selfish in praying for things for yourself. Ask God in faith for what you need in life, and he will provide it for you. He dearly wants you to ask him for what you really need.

On to the next blessing for us from God, when we follow him and Christ:

In Serving God, Your Life Will Continually Improve

As you do as God guides you to in life, problems in your life will simply work themselves out. Any issues, or unhappy situations will turn into happy ones. When you seek first the Kingdom of God, your problems will be solved, seemingly on their own.

God makes this happen for us, because he knows that we are making other people's lives improve. This is an extension of the sow/reap principle. If we do what we can in our lives to help other people's lives to improve, God will make our lives improve. What a wonderful God we truly have.

But, we have yet to see our greatest rewards for doing God's will on this earth; these rewards are being stored up for us now, to be received on the new earth:

We Will Receive Treasure in Heaven

1 Corinthians 3:8 "Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."

Matthew 6:19-21 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

The Bible says that we have treasure laid up in heaven for us, for doing God's will. God wants us to do works which have eternal good outcomes. Because we do works with eternal good outcomes for others on this passing earth, we will receive eternal rewards on the new earth.

Then, we ought to devote ourselves to doing God's will in this world, knowing that God is rewarding us here, and will reward us with eternal rewards. There is absolutely nothing in this earth which can compare with the gifts that God gives us for serving him wholeheartedly. What we receive from God can only bless us, and he's earnestly hoping that you'll be able to access his blessings, by blessing others in your life.

I exhort you, do make God and Christ your Lords, and diligently follow them. They will show you how to truly help people in your life. It can only happen with their help, and they dearly want all of their children to help their will to be done on the earth. Do the eternal good which they have for you to do today, and you'll reap good both in this life, and in the life to come.

My Prayer for You

I pray that all who read this article will recognize the biblical soundness of these doctrines. I pray that you will take these teachings to heart, and devote your life to doing good for all, through the leading of Christ and God. I earnestly hope that your life will be very fruitful for God's kingdom. I look forward to seeing you on the new earth. May God bless you richly. In Jesus' name, amen.

The Fast and Furiously Fit Challenge: FAQs about Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting (IF) involves using short, sustainable periods of fasting combined with shorter periods of eating to lose fat, gain muscle, balance hormones, increase productivity and basically live a longer, happier life. IF is quickly overtaking keto and paleo as the most popular new diet lifestyle on the planet — but here’s the thing: it’s been around forever.

The Test of Time: Try IF!

Unlike many types of diets we see today, IF in its many forms has been around for centuries, and it’s been used to increase well-being, manage illness, and yes, lose fat and build muscle. However, even with a hefty historical precedent, there are still a lot of questions about IF. Many of these questions arise not because IF is itself complicated  — it’s insanely simple — but because some tenants of IF go against the widespread, hyped-up diet wisdom. But, as anyone who bought tickets to Fyre will will tell you, just because something is widespread and hyped up, doesn’t mean it’s going to deliver.
The results you’ll get from doing Sean’s Fast and Furious Challenge, however, are real. Featuring 20 days of HIIT workouts and a support ebook about IF (delicious recipes included), our beloved and bemuscled trainer has designed this challenge for everyone who wants to see lean muscle gains, without having to adhere to a restriction diet. That’s right, kids: while you should always aim to eat mostly whole, clean, healthy foods, there is nothing  — and we mean nothing — you that is completely off the table when you IF. There are simply times when you cannot eat.
And this leads into our intermittent fasting frequently asked questions. If you’re sweating it out in Sean’s challenge or just curious about IF, read on. Here’s what you need to know about this dietary lifestyle.

Once you’ve signed up, be sure to join the BodyRock Insiders Group on Facebook to get the support you need to crush all your fit goals. You can also follow Sean on Instagram (@bodyrocktvseanlight) for a daily hit of motivation.
Q: Do I need equipment to do the Fast and Furiously Fit Challenge?
A: Nope, but you’ll get better results if you do use equipment. The equipment used in the challenge includes the dumbbells, step riser, yoga mat,Booty Band bundle, Pink Thing, Mini Challengers and the sandbag. You can get it all for 20% off here in the Fast & Furiously Fit Bundle.
Q: Is there a deal or a coupon on the gear needed for the Fast and Furiously Fit Challenge?
A: You bet! You can get 20% off and a great deal on the accompanying ShredFastebook.
Q: How long do I IF?
A: While some types of IF involve not eating for 24 hours, the most commonly used method is the 16:8 fast/feed, meaning fasting periods are around 16 hours long and eating windows are within a spread of 8 hours. Which exact hours you choose to fast and eat will depend on your lifestyle and personal preferences, but the majority of fasting is done while you are asleep.
Q: Is it okay to skip breakfast when I IF?
A: Absolutely. Your first meal of the day is important, but that first meal doesn’t have to be what we conventionally consider breakfast at what we conventionally call breakfast time. Studies show that you do not need to eat within the first hour or two of waking up to lose weight.
Just enough good clean fuel to support your body’s needs and your goals. Again, for more information on how much fuel your body needs and the best diet for IF, grab our ebook.
Q: Do I have to massively restrict my calories to IF?
A: No. You restrict when you eat not the amount you eat. You still need to get all your macros everyday from mostly healthy foods and not overeat, but IF is not a deprivation diet.
Q: Are there any foods I cannot eat when you IF?
A: No. You can eat wheat, dairy, red meat, and even small amounts of junk foods. The key is to make sure 80-90% of your diet is comprised of clean, whole, healthy food and that your are hitting your required macronutrient intake per day. If you don’t know what your macronutrient intake should be, read this for macro measuring made easy. If you’re really looking to get a solid understanding of how to practically (and deliciously) ensure you get your daily macros, get the Fast and Furiously Fit ebook.
Q: Can I IF if I’m being treated for a medical condition?
A:That depends. Check with your doctor. Some medical conditions have been shown to improve with IF; others are contraindicated all together, or at least without medical approval. These conditions include, but are not limited to:
  • Diabetics
  • Those with gout
  • Those taking medications
  • Those with GERD
Q: Will I be hungry all the time if I IF?
A: Nope! You’re still eating everything you need to eat everyday: just in an 8 hour window. To learn more about how IF can actually help regulate your hormones and your hunger, read our ebook!
Q: Can I workout fasted?
A:Definitely! In fact, you’ll burn more fat if you do. Just be sure to schedule your workouts so you can eat within an hour or two of your workout.
Q: Do you lose muscle if you IF?
A: Nope!In fact, IF can increase human growth hormone by up to five times. In addition to further fueling the fat burning process, a higher level of human growth hormone will also support major muscle gains.
Q: Can I drink artificial sweetened/stevia sweetened drinks if I IF?
A: No.Studies are inconclusive as to whether these affect your blood sugar levels. For surest results, stick to water or black tea or coffee.
Q: Do I need to use a ‘snake juice’ (electrolyte beverage) when I IF?
A: No. You’re just fasting 16 hours. With proper hydration and proper nutrition during your feeding window, you will not need to balance electrolytes.
Q: Do I need to IF for 16 hours everyday?
A: No, you can still see results if you fast 5 or 6 days a week, or if you shorten your fasting window to 13 or 14 hours. Some experts suggest that women in particular may need to modify their fasting schedule and/or shorten their fasting windows by an hour or two. This said, many women have no problem fasting for the full 16 hours. Try to do it as much as you can and listen to your body!
Q: Can I fast for more than 16 hours a day?
A: you can even extend your fast to 17 or 18 hours now and then if you really want to max your fat burn for an hour or two longer, but it is nothing you have to do  — certainly not regularly. And if you do extend your fast a bit, keep in mind youstill need to consume all your macros for the day.If you don’t think you can pack in a day’s worth of nutrients in 6 hours, don’t do it.
Q: Can I IF if I’m pregnant or nursing?
A:No. Despite all the incredible benefits brought on by intermittent fasting, there are some people who should abstain from the practice as a lifestyle choice due to their more complex energy requirements and/or hormonal changes. These people include:
  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • Nursing women
  • Women in early postpartum
Q: Can my child IF?
A: No, not unless recommended by your child’s doctor. Refer to the answer above.

The world is full of dangerous situations. Even stepping out our own front door can be risky. The thought of being without some sort of safeguard against danger can be so frightening, some people may be afraid to leave home. Thankfully, there’s a higher power in whom we can trust to keep us safe from harm on all levels.
When we rely on our own efforts to stay safe, there’s always a possibility that something could go wrong. Relying on God, however, gives us access to a level of protection the world doesn’t have. This knowledge gives us peace of mind from worry and fear, and allows us to rest easy. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
There are plenty of people who don’t fear God, and it shows in what they do. Crime and violence are never far away, and it’s easy to get rattled if we focus solely on this. However, God promises to watch over those who trust in Him for their security. When we respect and honor Him and give His Word more consideration that what’s going on around us, evil will be supernaturally kept at bay. “The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil” (Proverbs 19:23).
Some individuals constantly fret about accidents and mishaps that could befall them. Focusing on that possibility can magnify this fear and make it seem enormous. However, focusing on God and His promises to us has a way of putting everything into perspective. “If you say, ‘The LORD is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:9-12, NIV). No matter where we go or what we do, God will watch over us, if we trust in Him to do so.
Sometimes we can let our minds play tricks on us and we imagine the worst possible scenario. This traps us in the wrong mindset, and we end up making ourselves miserable. Contemplating God’s Word, however, gives us hope; it reassures us that disaster is not waiting for us just around the corner. “You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety” (Job 11:18, NIV). This boosts our confidence and helps us maintain a positive frame of mind.
Letting our fears determine everything we do or don’t do isn’t God’s will for us. He wants us to enjoy exciting and adventurous lives, without the dread of something bad happening. When we trust in God, we have protection from every threat, regardless of where it may come from. “But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster” (1 Kings 5:4, NIV). We may live in turbulent times, but relying on God to shield us from evil gives us peace.

  • Get drills that integrate actions and movements--even if they are not volleyball related--to help the kids to develop their coordination
Develop a solid partnership between parent and child to help one another on the court as they learn their skills with Ruth Nelson, former head women's volleyball coach at University of Houston (where she coached volleyball legends such as Flo Hyman and Rita Crockett), LSU and Iowa; currently working with youth volleyball players Volleyball coach and youth trainer extraordinaire Ruth Nelson explains how she teaches parents to work with their kids in this video shot on-location at the 2011 AVCA convention in San Antonio. Coach Nelson works with a group of 7 year-old girls and their parents instructing them in a positive and creative way so that all can learn proper habits on the court. Learning proper habits on the court at such a young age allows players to develop faster and retain more as they continue down the path to becoming a volleyball player. The parent involvement in this process is key. The parents must know and understand the proper habits and techniques as well so that they can teach and give correct cues to encourage their young ones to play the ball correctly. Nelson shows a variety of drills that teach different volleyball skills. She starts the drills with tennis balls, progresses to a soft bigger ball, then a green soft ball the size of a volleyball and finally a real volleyball. She has created a practice system for the girls but tries to introduce new drills that build on ones they have already done. Nelson keeps the practice fun with agility drills that incorporate many different moves, including jump roping and doing cartwheels. Many of the drills are done on one side of the court to keep the girls close to each other, and the parents are on the court and included in every drill. The end result is parent and player forming a positive bond and everyone, parent and player alike, becoming a better volleyball player. Nelson has laid the groundwork to start kids early in the game of volleyball. She shows a system where she is able to teach 5-10 year olds all the skills needed to develop into successful athletes and volleyball players. This video is an excellent look at a wonderful way to develop youth volleyball players, encourage parent involvement with their children and promote the game of volleyball.
