Notes On Nutrition And Supplements

Simply use Supplements to enhance and compliment your comprehensive strength and conditioning program. You can take all of the fat burners your want, but if your program is nonexistent, so is your muscle building and fat loss.  -Nate
By BOB MYHAL
    • ** When using a thermogenic product (such as Ripped Fuel, Hydroxycut, EPH 833, etc.) to stimulate fat loss, be sure to take in sufficient amounts of protein'at least 20 grams every 3 hours;to prevent your body from cannibalizing muscle tissue. The easiest, most effective way to do this is with a low-fat protein powder or MRP.

    • *** As far as thermogenics or so-called fat-burners are concerned, ephedrine is still the king of the hill, but when you're deciding on your weightloss supplementation program don't overlook hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

HCA is derived from the tamarind fruit and seems to work by inhibiting excess carbohydrates from being stored as bodyfat. MuscleTech's Hydroxycut is a popular product containing HCA.

    • *** The chemistry of 19-norandrostenedione is telling. Basically, 19-norandrostenedione is structurally identical to a testosterone molecule right up the chain with two key exceptions: first, it is missing the hydrogen atom in the 17th position and second, it also lacks a carbon atom in the 19th position.

What happens is that when the liver processes the norandrostenedione molecule it adds a hydrogen atom in the 17th position. The liver, however, has no mechanism for adding the carbon atom in the 19th position.

What results is virtually a testosterone molecule missing the carbon atom. This molecule has the anabolic properties of testosterone (it may in fact have 2 or 3 times the anabolic effect of testosterone) without the level of androgenic side effects typically seen with extended testosterone use.

    • *** If you're looking to drop fat and get lean, you'll benefit from 3-5 cardiovascular training sessions per week. Ideally, each session should be 30-45 minutes in duration.

For fat burning, it's actually more beneficial to train at a consistent level of intensity throughout the session rather than using some sort of interval training (as with some of the machines which stimulate a series of inclines and declines).

Its also crucial for you to do your cardio training on an empty stomach'otherwise you'll simply be burning up glycogen stores (sugar rather than fat). First thing in the morning is the best time for cardio training. If this isn't possible, at least try not to eat for 3 or 4 hours prior to your cardio session, that way you'll be primarily burning fat stores.

Flu Fighters -- Stock Up On These Immunity-boosting Foods

With all of the talk of infectious diseases and the fear and hysteria surrounding them. You may not be aware that you have the ammunition to fight back and essentially never get sick if you keep your body rich with antioxidants and helped with exercise, rest, and hydration.  And yes, that includes fighting the Ebola Virus
-Nate
Flu Fighters -- Stock Up On These Immunity-boosting Foods
BY KRISTINE NAPIER, R.D.
The history of cold and flu containment reads like a catalog of neuroses, from the once-popular practice of avoiding cold weather (or at least wearing a hat) to our current compulsion to wash our hands and wipe our phones in avoidance of microbial mingling. Now the latest research tells us to eat functional foods to combat infection. At least this new trend requires somewhat less clinical behavior.
AthletesThe Fat Burning WorkoutPolice, Fire, Military > Warriors
The phrase "functional" is shorthand for the ancient belief that eating the right foods not only prevents illness  from cancer and hypertension to colds and flu  but may even help cure it. "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food," said Hippocrates. Science is only now playing catch-up. Recently, a landmark study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute suggested that food can be as effective as drugs by showing that a lowfat diet containing lots of fruits, vegetables and dairy products radically reduced blood pressure.
"Nature constructed food to fight disease in a way that we can't replicate," says Joseph V. Formica, Ph.D., professor of microbiology at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine. Still, scientists can isolate the chemical makeup of fruits, vegetables, fish, grains and other foods that affect our cells , and our health. Stock up on the following so you don't have to hoard Kleenex.
Flavonoids: These substances are a type of PHYTOCHEMICAL, natural compounds that protect plants against disease and have been found to prevent cancer and heart disease in humans. Recent lab tests here and in France have shown that flavonoids can actually stop viruses from reproducing. "Flavonoids seem to bind to the outside protective coat of viruses and then damage their DNA," explains Formica. Best sources: red wine and tea, as well as raw or cooked onions, kale, broccoli, tomatoes and citrus fruits.
Protein: "Protein is especially important for powering the immune system," says Frances Tyus, R.D., a nutritional consultant at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Immune-system worker bees, like antibodies and T cells, are actually made of protein, and you need a constant supply for reinforcement. To make sure your body is well defended, especially when you're about to get sick, aim for 50 to 75 grams a day; that's about two servings of meat, poultry or fish, plus a serving of beans and two glasses of milk.
Minerals: Your body can't do much with protein unless it has three minerals (magnesium, iron and zinc) and three B vitamins (B6, thiamine and riboflavin) to help transform it into muscle and other tissue. This seems like a lot to remember, but you can get most of these nutrients in one shot from sources like fish, lentils, whole grains, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin A: Mucous membranes that line the eyes, nose, lungs and stomach are your immune system's first line of defense against invading cold and flu viruses. Vitamin A helps keep these membranes healthy. Although fatty foods like butter, milk and eggs are packed with the vitamin, many fruits and vegetables contain compounds that the body converts to vitamin A as it needs it. Go for orange, red and dark green hues like sweet potatoes, papaya, spinach, carrots, squash and cantaloupe.
Vitamin C: This vitamin is needed to produce a healthy stock of infection-gobbling white blood cells. "It's easy to get the amount you need from food," says Tyus. In addition to drinking orange juice, eat raw tomatoes, kiwis, papaya, strawberries, spinach, sweet potatoes and red peppers.
Not that you should stop washing your hands to kill microbes or brave the cold with a naked head. The first is still good science, and the second just makes sense.

Iron Supplementation In Athletes - Current Recommendations

From our friends at the I.S.S.A

-Nate

By I.S.S.A.
There is still debate in the literature on whether or not endurance athletes tend to have low iron stores. In this article, we propose that endurance athletes really are at risk of becoming iron deficient due to an imbalance between absorption of dietary iron and exercise- induced iron loss. The purpose of this article is to present a critical review of the literature on iron supplementation in sport. The effect of iron deficiency on performance, its diagnosis and suggestions for treatment are also discussed.
Studies of the nutritional status of athletes in various disciplines have shown that male, but not female, athletes clearly achieve the recommended dietary intake of iron (10 to 15 mg/day). This reflects the situation in the general population, with menstruating women beings the main risk group for mild iron deficiency, even in developed countries. Whereas the benefit of iron supplementation in athletes with iron deficiency anaemia is well established, this is apparently not true for non- anaemic athletes who have exhausted iron stores alone (prelatent iron deficiency); most of the studies in the literature show no significant changes due to supplementation in the physical capacity of athletes with prelatent iron deficiency. However, the treatment protocols used in some of these studies do not meet the general recommendations for the optimal clinical management of iron deficiency, that is, with respect to adequate daily dosage, mode of administration and treatment period. For future studies, we recommend a prolonged treatment period (greater than or equal to 3 months) with standardised conditions of administration (use of a pharmaceutical iron preparation with known high bioavailability and a dosage of ferrous (Fe++) iron 100 mg/day, taken on an empty stomach).
We believe that there are sufficient arguments to support controlled iron supplementation in all athletes with low serum ferritin levels. Firstly, the development of iron deficiency is prevented. Secondly, the nonspecific upregulation of intestinal metal ion absorption is reverted to normal, thus limiting the hyperabsorption of potentially toxic lead and cadmium even in individuals with mild iron deficiency.

Nutrition Lies On The Web

Internet Health Myths
(MSNBC Health,)  Along with increased access to helpful health information, the Internet also offers inaccurate information that can distract people from healthful activities, and persuade others to take actions that are sometimes downright dangerous.
FOR EXAMPLE, a weight loss diet including only grapefruit, vegetables, eggs and meat has been circulating on the Internet for several years. Supposedly, the world-famous Mayo Clinic recommended it, and it can melt pounds away. The Mayo Clinic never recommended such a diet. A single call to its nutrition department clarified that. Comparing this diet with recommendations from a wide range of nutrition and weight-loss experts will tell you more. People may temporarily lose weight on this diet because of very low calorie intake, but there is no magical effect of the grapefruit or combinations of the foods prescribed. When people get tired of the monotony of this diet, they tend to regain any weight lost. And the diet is not healthy; it is grossly inadequate nutritionally.
Another story that has appeared on the Internet for several months involves aspartame (NutraSweet). The story contains a long list of illnesses linked to aspartame, including multiple sclerosis (MS), brain cancer and seizures, and it talks about the danger of aspartame to body cells. The medical literature, however, shows that aspartame is not absorbed into the body; it is first broken down into phenylalanine and asparatic acid (amino acids that are building blocks of protein) and methanol.
The Internet story goes into detail about the damage from methanol, yet according to a review in the respected medical journal Lancet, fruit juice can contain twice as much methanol as soda with aspartame. Alcoholic drinks contain even more than that. The amino acid phenylalanine that is blasted in the Internet letter is far more concentrated in eggs, milk and most meat. The senior medical advisor for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation describes the Internet article as scandalously misinformative.
Before you act on any information from the Internet, or pass it on to anyone else, check the sources. Call organizations cited to make sure they were quoted accurately. Check that the organizations themselves are credible sources of information, and check on the background of any cited experts. If that's hard to do, it's not a good sign for the accuracy of the story.
You can verify information on diet and cancer risk by calling the American Institute for Cancer Research toll-free nutrition hotline at 800-843-8114.

Can This Herb Reduce Aging?

Does Ginkgo Biloba Reverse Aging?
(From MSN Health by WebMD, October 18 1999)
Question: I read in an article that ginkgo biloba reverses aging. Is this true?
Answer: Ginkgo biloba is an herb that has received acclaim as a memory enhancer and anti-aging product. It's now among the ten most popular dietary supplements sold in the United States.
The Ginkgo Biloba Tree, also referred to as the Maidenhair Tree
Although it has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine for lung disorders, ginkgo extract has more recently been used in Europe and North America against the symptoms of aging. It is believed to stimulate circulation and oxygen flow to the brain, which can improve problem-solving and enhance memory.
Effects of ginkgo
  • May increase blood flow in cerebrovascular disease
  • May improve poor circulation in the limbs
  • Improves memory and alertness
  • Improves communication, orientation and mobility
  • Improves symptoms of vertigo and tinnitus
In a group of older people with mobility problems, ginkgo improved pain-free walking distance by as much as 30 percent. Long-term ginkgo use appears to reduce cardiovascular risks. It has also been shown to improve the cognitive function of Alzheimer's Disease patients.
Differences in the production, labeling and marketing of this extract make it essential that consumers scrutinize the products they buy in order to maximize positive benefits while minimizing risks.
Before purchasing a product, you should inspect the label. Manufacturers are now required to label their products with nutritional labeling that lists ingredients in descending order. Look for information on the label that indicates that a standardized extract of 24 percent ginkgo flavonglycosides and 6 percent terpenes has been used to prepare the product. The flavonoids are antioxidants. Both flavonoids and terpenes are believed to help protect brain function. Because herbal medicines are made from crude extracts of plants, look to see if there is any indication that the manufacturing process has removed any pesticides that may have been used in the plant cultivation. In addition, the product should have an expiration date.
Don't expect to feel it right away. It may be several weeks before any effect will be noticeable. Many people also believe that it's a good idea to give the body a rest periodically by taking some time off from using the extract, for example, by taking one month off after six months of use.
It is also important to be aware that herbal medicines can have drug interactions with other herbal preparations you may be taking, or with other over the counter or prescription medicines. For this reason, you should consult with your physician or pharmacist before taking any herbal preparation. For example, ginkgo diminishes the blood's ability to clot. It should definitely not be taken with anticoagulants such as coumadin or aspirin. With very large doses, side effects of ginkgo can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, irritability and restlessness.
The American Botanical Council has recently published the Complete German Commission E Monographs, which describe the potential therapeutic applications of a variety of herbal medicines.

Why Most Health Foods are a Waste of Money

From the desk of Lee Euler, Editor and Publisher

Why Most Health Foods
are a Waste of Money
A Free Video Presentation
At last, here's the real reason you can take vitamins,
minerals and herbs by the handful and still suffer poor health
Our diets lack a vital food —
and even most alternative doctors don't know it!
  • A man with kidney cancer, given days to live, was alive and well 15 years later thanks to this supplement
  • It's the second most popular pain reliever in Germany after aspirin - yet it’s almost unknown elsewhere
  • Injured athletes who take it get back on the field twice as fast as those who don't
  • Studies show the nutrient thins the blood, breaks up blood clots and heals inflamed blood vessels like magic
  • One mother said her lifelong migraine problem disappeared immediately
  • And I got rid of a 20-year spastic colon problem!
Does it sound incredible that one supplement can help all these diseases — and more? Then ask yourself this: What if you had NO vitamins in your diet — none at all? You'd be very sick.
Guess what: this nutrient is just as important as vitamins and you're getting approximately ZERO.
