Salt in your diet
Salt has often been deemed the 'bad guy' of meal planning. Although we especially in the west tend to abuse this nutrient, it is still an essential nutrient that if implemented into your meal plan properly; can be a major player in your healthy lifestyle.
-Nate Salt in your diet. Many people regard salt as just another item on the list of "bad foods" that should be avoided in our diet. They mistakenly believe that excessive salt, or sodium, intake will lead to high blood pressure, or hypertension. When people talk about salt in the diet they are usually referring to table salt or sodium chloride. In fact, sodium chloride is just one of many salts that are in our food. Chemically a food is described as a salt when it shares common chemical characteristics. We can recognize these chemicals on food labels when we see the tags --ide (as in chloride), --ate (as in borate) or --ite (as in sulfite). If you take a look at the labels on prepared foods you can understand why we don't need to add table salt to our diet. If we don't have a diet high in fresh foods there's a good chance we've already consumed far more salt than we need. Interestingly, research has shown that salt has little or no effect on most people with normal blood pressure as well as many people with hypertension. There are, however, many individuals who are salt sensitive. They react unfavorably to salt in any form because it puts strain on the kidneys, increasing blood volume. If the arteries are unable to dilate sufficiently to accommodate this increased blood volume, blood pressure will rise. Depending on who you ask, most health promotion educators recommend that adults limit sodium intake to 1000 milligrams per day--that's about one teaspoon. To reduce the amount of salt in your diet, minimize the amount of canned and processed foods, smoked meats, condiments, chips, and soft drinks you consume. Of course, it's always a good idea to discuss health concerns with your physician, but moderation seems to be the key in most dietary matters, including salt.

Try These Fatigue-Fighting Foods
Feel sluggish in the afternoon?
Ready to crash come evening?
You're not alone.
Many people, especially women, are constantly suffering from a lack of energy. Fatigue can be caused by a number of different factors, but for many people, poor nutrition is to blame.
Since food is the body's fuel, how well you're able to perform during the day may be directly related to what foods you fill up with during meal and snack time.
When it comes to energy levels, foods and drinks that play the biggest role are carbohydrates, protein, water, and caffeine.
Here's how to include them in your diet:
Carbs for Energy
Your body needs some carbs. Yes, you heard it right. Carbs!
A combination of complex and simple carbs is what to aim for to get maximum benefit. Complex carbs are slower to burn and include foods like whole grains and starchy vegetables (squash, potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin). Whole grains that are high in fiber are what you need for sustained, long-lasting energy. Look for bread that contains two to three grams of fiber per slice.
For a healthy dose of simple carbs, stick with fresh, whole fruits.
Protein for Stamina
While carbs supply energy, protein is responsible for releasing the energy.
Protein is also essential for cell growth, the transport of nutrients and hormones through the body, healthy muscles, and a properly working immune system.
Be sure to eat a source of protein at each meal, whether lean meat, fish, poultry, beans, eggs, soy, nuts, or low-fat dairy.
Water for Refreshment
Essential to survival, water is also essential for energy.
When you consider that two-thirds of your body is made of water, you're reminded how important water is to health and wellness. Water helps to control your temperature, helps you digest food, lubricates your organs, and plays a major role in creating energy molecules.
If you're depleted of water, you probably feel depleted of energy. If you're dehydrated, you'll feel completely dragged out. Without enough water, your body will work overtime to re-hydrate itself instead of producing energy.
Caffeine for Stimulation
Caffeine is a stimulant that works by exaggerating the effects of your natural hormones, causing your heart to beat faster and your breathing to increase, making you feel more alert.
Perhaps you're one of the millions of people who drink one or more cups of coffee in the morning. If so, you know the powerful effect caffeine has to jumpstart your energy level.
Besides coffee, caffeine is also found in tea, sodas, herbs, and chocolate. Be aware that too much caffeine can make you feel jittery, interfere with your sleep, and cause dehydration.
Additional Tips
Keep in mind that overeating, no matter what food, may cause sluggishness.
Instead of three large meals, try eating several small meals (don't forget breakfast!) throughout the day to give you constant bursts of energy.
Too much alcohol or a vitamin deficiency is often to blame for low energy levels. For women, a dragged out feeling could be caused by anemia (low iron) due to their monthly menstruation.
If you still feel fatigued and lethargic after eating a well-balanced diet, contact a food professional or your physician. Stress, medications, diseases, sleep problems, or lack of exercise may be to blame, and getting these under control will get your energy level back where it belongs.
One of the most proven ways to increase your energy levels is to participate in a consistent, challenging exercise program.
My passion is to help people, just like you, improve their energy levels and their overall quality of life.

Dr. Molan believes the flowers of the native New Zealand manuka bush produce honey with antibacterial properties head and shoulders above other products.
Let me explain what it is about manuka honey that makes it such a promising treatment—even for cancer patients with wounds to heal.
An enzyme that bees add to the nectar produces hydrogen peroxide in all honeys. Dr. Molan said that manuka honey—and its close relative which is made from the Australia jellybush—contains a little extra something…
But after more than two decades of research, Molan still couldn't say just what that special something is. He decided to call it the unique manuka factor (UMF).
Another researcher, Professor Thomas Henle form the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, determined that the extra 'kick' in manuka honey comes from methylglyoxal (MG).
Small amounts of MG are in most types of honey. In manuka honey, MG comes from the conversion of dihydroxyacetone—which is found in higher concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers.
So maybe it's that extra MG that makes manuka honey such a strong antibacterial.
According to Dr. Molan, when he compares the bacteria fighting ability of the UMF in manuka honey to other carbolic or phenol antiseptics, the results are nothing short of amazing.
the toughest bacteria run for cover!
Superbugs such as the dreaded Staphylococcus aureas and its evil cousin MRSA are no match for this amazing natural antibiotic.
A group of Canadian researchers published findings in the journal Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery, which concluded that manuka honey has "bactericidal properties superior to those of most commonly used antimicrobials."
Similarly, a 2002 review found that despite the small number of clinical studies on living patients (in vivo), the antibacterial properties of manuka and other honeys had been demonstrated in studies of lab cultures (in vitro).
These reviewers concluded that there was a potential for its use in "the management of a large number of wound types."
Dr. Molan is quoted in a BBC News interview as saying, "We know it has a very broad spectrum of action… we haven't found anything it doesn't work on among infectious organisms."
that we're just finding out?
Its natural antibiotic properties helped keep the wounds from becoming infected—which could also lead to other health problems. For many years I've heard authorities in natural medicine recommend honey as a wound dressing to prevent infection. It appears that manuka may be quite a bit more powerful than the average honey.
Manuka honey is being touted as a marvelous all-purpose medicine that can help:
- Heal surgical wounds, particularly for diabetic patients.
- Improve superficial burns
- Stop uncomfortable inflammation in its tracks
- Treat leg ulcers, pressure sores and wounds from cancers that break through skin
- And much more!
Believe it or not, the FDA approved manuka honey as a wound management treatment in 2007.
And you better believe that watchful entrepreneurs got their wagons rolling not long after this decision…
For example, the New Jersey company Derma Sciences Inc., a maker of advanced wound care products, started selling the first honey-based dressings in the U.S.
Their product is called Medihoney. It's made from a highly absorbent seaweed-based material saturated with manuka honey.
Dr. Molan also developed wound dressings that are marketed by the New Zealand companyComvita.
These dressings could be especially helpful to cancer patients who experience wounds or ulcers as a result of radiation therapy.
But if you're not in the market for wound dressings — don't despair! There are other manuka honey products available from reputable companies. For example, you'll find manuka honey oil, throat spray, lozenges and other products marketed by Manuka Health-New Zealand (http://www.manukahoneyus.com/ ).
See what kind of protection and sweet relief you experience by discovering the power of this ancient health remedy!

A Nutritional Supplement is Just That. To Supplement Your Good Eating Habits
By BOB MYHAL
When using a thermogenic product (such as Ripped Fuel, Hydroxycut, EPH 833, etc.) to stimulate fat loss, be sure to take in sufficient amounts of protein at least 20 grams every 3 hours to prevent your body from cannibalizing muscle tissue. The easiest, most effective way to do this is with a low-fat protein powder or MRP.
If you frequently experience painful muscle cramps during or after your training, then you should try taking 1 or 2 grams of the amino acid taurine approximately 2 hours prior to training it has powerful and proven anti-cramping properties.
As far as thermogenics or so-called fat-burners are concerned, ephedrine is still the king of the hill, but when you're deciding on your weightloss supplementation program don't overlook hydroxycitric acid (HCA).
HCA is derived from the tamarind fruit and seems to work by inhibiting excess carbohydrates from being stored as bodyfat. MuscleTech's Hydroxycut is a popular product containing HCA.
The chemistry of 19-norandrostenedione is telling. Basically, 19-norandrostenedione is structurally identical to a testosterone molecule right up the chain with two key exceptions: first, it is missing the hydrogen atom in the 17th position and second, it also lacks a carbon atom in the 19th position.
What happens is that when the liver processes the norandrostenedione molecule it adds a hydrogen atom in the 17th position. The liver, however, has no mechanism for adding the carbon atom in the 19th position.
What results is virtually a testosterone molecule missing the carbon atom. This molecule has the anabolic properties of testosterone (it may in fact have 2 or 3 times the anabolic effect of testosterone) without the level of androgenic side effects typically seen with extended testosterone use.
If you're looking to drop fat and get lean, you'll benefit from 3-5 cardiovascular training sessions per week. Ideally, each session should be 30-45 minutes in duration.
For fat burning, it's actually more beneficial to train at a consistent level of intensity throughout the session rather than using some sort of interval training (as with some of the machines which stimulate a series of inclines and declines).
It"s also crucial for you to do your cardio training on an empty stomach otherwise you'll simply be burning up glycogen stores (sugar rather than fat). First thing in the morning is the best time for cardio training. If this isn't possible, at least try not to eat for 3 or 4 hours prior to your cardio session that way you'll be primarily burning fat stores.
