You need all the help you can get, so I want to recommend a book. I asked my friend Cindy, a home care expert, to find a truly useful book on cancer caregiving. She recommended Cancer Caregiving A-to-Z: An At-Home Guide for Patients and Families, and now that I've read it, I can see why.
It's surprisingly tough to find a caregiving book that feels user-friendly. Most of them are filled with thick, technical paragraphs that give you a headache just looking at them, or they contain encouraging, but empty fluff.Cancer Caregiving A to Z is different.
For one thing, it's organized in the easiest possible way, alphabetically addressing topics from Anxiety to Weight Changes. (They cheated; there is no Z.) Each section gives you crucial background information, then lists "What the Patient Can Do", "What Caregivers Can Do"; and "When to Call the Doctor." Even if you're so exhausted that you can barely open your eyes, you'll still be able to read this book. Order on Amazon, if you're interested.
I'm glad I did. I found much here to interest me, since I'm the caregiver to my husband, who's recovering from a major stroke that paralyzed his left side. I need to learn as much as I can about Poor Appetite, Pressure Sores, Seizures, and lots of other topics that are well-covered here.
But I'm also impressed by the plentiful advice on problems specific to cancer caregiving. For instance, suppose your family is facing chemotherapy. You can quickly read the chapter devoted to that topic for a good overview of what's coming, and to learn how patient and caregiver can make informed decisions during treatment.
But, in addition, you'll find separate chapters on each of chemotherapy's most common side effects, with expert advice to help ease their difficulties. When should you call the doctor if your loved one is vomiting? What kind of grooming techniques will help you minimize hair loss? What is the optimum time for giving pain medications to a patient with mouth sores? This book's straightforward, easy-to-find answers could make all the difference for your loved one.
As the introduction points out, cancer patients are now living longer, which is good news indeed. But patients are receiving treatments in outpatient settings that used to be performed in a hospital. And often they get discharged early from the hospital, while still suffering from the side effects of the treatment.
These policies force patients to come home in pain and discomfort, putting tremendous demands upon their caregivers. I’m horrified when I walk by the baked goods section of the supermarket and see cakes or cookies drenched in garish colored icing. Valentine’s Day brings cookies iced with dark red or hot pink. St. Patrick’s Day means foods dyed greener than any healthy lawn. I’ve even seen cakes on Halloween that are completely covered in orange and black icing.
The stuff doesn’t even look appetizing. It looks like brightly-colored plastic toys (and that may be the idea). But I wouldn’t be surprised if plastic is less toxic than some of the dyes in our foods these days.

Manufacturers add about 15 million pounds of synthetic dyes to our foods each year. They do it because dyes are supposed to make foods look tastier and healthier. But they’re deceptive, not to mention poisonous. The fake coloring simulates healthful, colorful fruits and vegetables –ironic, considering the adverse effect of the toxic ingredients in these foods.
It’s practically an epidemic. The dyes are in just about everything, from breakfast cereals to salad dressings to every type of candy out there. Fruit drinks, sodas, and ice cream are also contaminated, not to mention certain breads. Because food dyes are so prevalent, our per capita consumption is up 500 percent from what it was about 50 years ago.
Manufacturers claim they add dye to foods for the following reasons:
  • To enhance the color of food
  • To add color to food that’s has none
  • To avoid color loss that’s a result of environmental elements
  • To deliver consistency when colors vary in food
  • Most of the colorings are synthetically produced. That’s where you get names like Blue No. 1 and Green No. 3. The three most widely used dyes are Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 – all of which are contaminated with cancer-causing agents.
    Another dye, Red 3, has actually been identified as a carcinogen by the FDA, but incredibly is still used commercially! On top of that, many of the most common food dyes are petroleum-based.
    Three of the most commonly used dyes contain carcinogens. Four of them cause serious allergic reactions. And studies show that seven of the most common dyes caused cancer in lab animals, including colon cancer, brain tumors, and testicular tumors.
    Of course, the FDA supposedly regulates food color additives with the goal of making them safe for human consumption. FDA approval includes studying the composition, health effects, and safety effects of dyes, along with ensuring colors are labeled on food so people know what they’re eating.
    That regulation is pointless, since synthetic chemicals shouldn’t even be in our foods. They do nothing to enhance the nutritional quality. They don’t make the foods safer (quite the opposite). We’re seeing them trigger not only allergies, but also behavior problems in children like hyperactivity, and as I mentioned, the scariest of all – cancer.
    Beware of “natural additives” as well
    Some food colorings come from natural elements, like the pigments of vegetables, minerals, and sometimes even animals. But I’d caution you to steer clear of anything with “natural additives.”
    Caramel color is a good example of a natural additive that can be toxic. It’s commonly used to give sodas that rich, brown color (by the way, caramel color has no connection to real caramel, which is made from sugar). According to a 2013 report from market research firms Mintel and Leatherhead Food Research, caramel color is the single most used food coloring in the world. But two of the four types of caramel color contain something called 4-MeI, which is a potential carcinogen.
    Most people have never heard of 4-MeI. But you need to know how dangerous it may be, especially since a two-year government study showed it causes cancer in mice. Worse, it’s hard to tell which sodas have 4-MeI, since all the food label will say is “caramel color,” leaving you to wonder whether you’re drinking one of the “safe” varieties of this dye.
    In 2013, Consumer Reports conducted tests on a variety of carbonated beverages, including Pepsi, Coke, and Malta Goya to determine levels of 4-MeI. Their results showed quite a bit of variation. Pepsi and Malta Goya had significant levels of 4-MeI – both averaging more than 29 micrograms per can or bottle. (Note: 29 micrograms was used as the cutoff point because that’s the level that poses a one in 100,000 risk of cancer according to the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.)
    Like many of the poisons in our diet, there are no federal limits on how much 4-MeI can be put in a beverage. Most Americans drink 2.5 glasses a day of brown sodas. (I don’t drink any, so someone else must be drinking five to make up for me!)
    I’ve got a wild, crazy idea:
    Eat real foods
    Over the last couple years, prominent watchdog groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have said food dyes pose major health risks and that the U.S. government should ban them. In most of Europe, they’ve already been banned.
    The health risks are huge, especially for young children. In 2008, CSPI petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban use of these toxic dyes. It’s outrageous that the FDA hasn’t done something, especially considering how easy it is to replace those colorings with safe, natural ingredients. Companies want to keep using the dyes because they’re cheaper, more stable, and brighter than most natural colorings.
    Yet, there are safe, saleable alternatives. Consider strawberry-flavored Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain cereal bars. In the U.S., the bars are colored with Red No. 40, Yellow No. 6, and Blue No. 1. In the U.K., where food dyes are outlawed, the exact same cereal bar by Kellogg’s is colored with beetroot, annatto, and paprika extract.
    Or, look at the strawberry shake sold by McDonald’s. That pretty pink color comes from Red dye No. 40 if you drink your shake in the U.S. But in Britain, the shake that goes by the same name is colored with concentrated beetroot juice.
    Even Fanta orange soda is better for you in Britain. There, it’s dyed orange with pumpkin and carrot extract. The U.S. version is laced with Red 40 and Yellow 6.
    Read labels!
    It’s your only protection
    Given the wide array of medical problems I had when I was young, I started reading ingredient labels at an early age. It’s a good habit to get into. By the time I hit the ripe old age of 60 I didn’t have to read labels much anymore because I had simply stopped buying processed, manufactured foods.
    If you want to limit your exposure to potential carcinogens like 4-MeI and all the other toxins, stay away from products with ingredients like “caramel color,” “artificial color,” or anything with a number in the name (like “Red No. 3"). Especially stay away from Red No. 3, Citrus Red No. 2, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1, Blue No. 2, and Green No. 3. These dyes have compelling links to cancer development.
    I’d also caution you to look past pretty pictures. Photos of brightly colored fruits on packaging might give you a false impression of what’s inside. Instead, always read the label. Or, shop at chains like Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's, which drastically limit the amount of foods they carry with artificial coloring.
    There’s no question that the FDA needs to ban these toxic petrochemicals from all food. Then the food industry would be forced to use colors made with natural dyes. The safe alternatives include things like blueberry juice concentrate, carrot juice, paprika, grape skin extract, beet juice, purple sweet potato, corn, and red cabbage. They all sound delicious to me. But until their use is common, make sure you protect yourself by reading labels and boycotting artificially dyed foods.
    There’s another point worth making here: When you hear about all the wonderful, cheap, abundant food we have here in the United States, think twice. “Cheap” is not “good.” It’s true the typical American family spends only 13 percent of its budget on food. In 1900 families spent a staggering 43 percent of their money just getting enough to eat.
    Spending so little of our income on foods sounds like progress, but it’s not – at least not entirely. One of the reasons is that most of that inexpensive food comes out of a factory. We’re consuming some pink chemical in our strawberry shake, not the natural red of strawberries. And the farms themselves are factories – I don’t need to repeat all that for you today; I’m sure you’ve seen the horror stories: chickens or cattle crammed together with no space to move and stuffed with drugs to make them get fat faster, crops genetically modified and drenched in pesticides and herbicides.
    I’m an avid radio listener and I keep hearing a public service commercial about how one child in 88 now has autism, a disease that virtually didn’t exist a hundred years ago. And I could mention five, ten or probably two dozen diseases in the same category.
    If you don’t think nutrition has a lot to do with it, you’re fooling yourself.
    So spending only 13 percent of your budget on food is NOT a good idea. Spend more and eat right. Here’s a benefit: It also tastes better.
    I eat tons of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. As for meat, I eat it much less frequently than does the average American, but when I do eat meat it’s the finest cuts – grass fed beef, free range chicken, heritage pork richly marbled with tasty fat (unlike conventionally grown factory pork that has all the fat bred out of it and tastes like leather; in one of its sporadic, irrational efforts to help us “eat right,” mainstream medicine decided saturated fat was bad, and the pork industry obliged by breeding low-fat pigs. This was a disaster for flavor AND for health. And margarine – a factory food that’s a real killer – was another one of mainstream medicine's brainstorms).

    A group of researchers from the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain conducted a study that shows manuka honey contains properties that can block tumor growth in the breasts, colon, and skin.
    According to study results published in the PLOS ONE scientific journal, Professor Basel Al Ramadi, head of the Microbiology and Immunology Department at UAE University, led a research team to determine the extent of manuka honey's ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
    The team learned that this type of honey directly caused apoptosis or programmed cell death!
    Your body uses apoptosis to balance the creation of new cells with the demise of older ones. It’s essential to your health to keep these two processes in balance, for two main reasons:
    1. Excessive apoptosis will cause your tissues to atrophy, and
    2. Insufficient apoptosis leads to uncontrolled cell growth, similar to what happens when a person has cancer.
    The UAE University research suggests that manuka honey helps eliminate cancer cells by bringing on apoptosis.
    Manuka honey has amazing
    antibacterial properties, too!
    Scrubbing cancer cells from your body isn’t the only health benefit of this sweet syrup. Recent tests conducted at Sydney University's School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences showed that manuka honey killed every type of bacteria tested.
    Scientists from the University of Ottawa, and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa achieved similar results when testing honey against pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and staphylococcus aureus (SA).
    The Canadian group conducted in vitro (i.e. lab culture) testing of honey against these strains of bacteria. They found the honey to be effective in killing 100 percent of the isolates in their planktonic form. And when the germs were made into biofilms, the manuka honey killed 63 percent of the PA bacteria and 91 percent of the SA. (A biofilm is a group of microorganisms that stick to one another on a surface. Planktonic cells, by contrast, exist individually, each by itself.)
    The researchers said these rates were significantly higher than those achieved when using antibiotic drugs against staphyloccus bacteria.
    Sounds wild, but I remember reading some 30 years ago that honey is a highly effective wound dressing because it kills microbes. And, as I mentioned before, our ancestors knew this before the time of Christ.
    So the recent scientific findings simply echo what ancient civilizations already knew about the healing properties of honey. Manuka honey takes no prisoners when it comes up against:
    1. Helicobacter pylori- which causes most stomach ulcers
    2. Escherichia coli - the culprit behind most infected wounds
    3. Streptococcus pyogenes - which causes sore throats
    What’s more, manuka honey is also being touted as a marvelous all-purpose medicine that can help:
    • Heal superficial burns
    • Cover and heal surgical wounds, particularly for diabetic patients
    • Soothe inflammation
    • Treat leg ulcers, pressure sores and wounds from skin cancers
    How do you use this all-purpose honey healer?
    There’s no special method or preparation you need in order to use honey. You can apply manuka honey directly to your skin as a balm for infections, or to soothe insect bites and cuts.
    And you most certainly can swallow a spoonful or mix it with some tea to help soothe your throat and digestive tract.
    Because manuka honey is a food, you can eat it the way you would any other honey product and enjoy the health benefits!
    With all this positive press... you might be wondering if there’s any downside to using manuka honey. Well, ease your mind because no earth shattering revelations are coming your way!
    There are no known side effects of active manuka honey when used internally, unless you are allergic to honey (as some people are). But there are some reasonable warnings and cautions.
    It should be no surprise that diabetics might need to avoid or limit their intake of honey because of the high sugar content.
    And you shouldn’t give honey to children under 12 months old (I’m guessing this is because of the potential for allergic reactions). You should also know that active manuka honey has stronger properties than regular manuka honey.
    “Active” manuka honey contains an additional, non-peroxide component known as methyl glyoxal. Scientists don’t know why, but this element is not found in all manuka honey, only in some. When present, it makes the honey vastly more powerful at fighting bacteria.
    So powerful, in fact, that researchers have devised a special rating system for manuka honey based on a batch’s “unique manuka factor” or UMF. It’s used as a marker to determine the honey’s therapeutic value.
    At times, active manuka honey applied directly on an external wound can sting. If you find this to be true in your case, simply use regular manuka honey instead.
    Regardless of how you may choose to use the honey—you can be sure that you’ll be tapping into one of Nature’s sweetest health healers!

And I’d venture a guess that very few Americans eat a diet that’s less than two-thirds cooked foods. Meaning, all of us are immune-system-compromised.

    3. Hormonal benefits. Studies show that people may be able to break down the hormones in sprouts and turn them into usable human hormones.     Broccoli sprouts have decided advantages over mature broccoli.
    Johns Hopkins scientists found that three-day old broccoli sprouts consistently packed 20 to 50 times the chemo-protective compounds found in mature broccoli heads.
    When you eat a sprout, you’re eating the entire plant at a very young age. That is, you eat the root, stem, and head in one concentrated little package.
    As the plant sucks water and grows, the cancer-protective compounds called sulforaphanes (part of a group called glucosinolates) are diluted. They’re still there, in roughly the same amount. But now instead of merely eating a sprouted seed to get them, you have to eat the entire plant!
    When you buy broccoli at the store, you’re buying just a portion of the whole plant. Glucosinolates were left in the ground (the root), others are in the leaves you discarded, and others were removed when the stem was cut off (many people just eat the florets).
    You might be wondering, why not just eat the seed before it even sprouts? Well you could… but sprouts are far more tasty, nutritious and easier to digest. Non-sprouted broccoli seeds taste terrible!
    Sprouted broccoli seed may also offer a simple dietary means of reducing prostate and colon cancer risk.
    Plus, they may bolster your defense against heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol, while at the same time they support your eye health, lung health, and immune system. When eaten during pregnancy, they may provide children with life-long protection from cardiovascular disease.
    That’s a lot of benefit from a humble seed and its pennies-per-serving sprouts.
    Store-bought organic produce has a dark side
    If all this isn’t enough to convince you to try sprouting, consider the reality of the organic foods your grocer carries.
    By the time you buy your organic produce, it’s likely been refrigerated for days, weeks, or even longer. Farms store it before shipment, and it travels for days to arrive at your store, where it’s stored yet again. By the time you get it, it may have lost its freshness.
    Most phytonutrients are inactive after about three weeks. Vitamins reportedly decline to a fraction of their original levels. The plant hormones may no longer be viable, and enzymes no longer active.
    Your organic produce is massively compromised by the time it reaches you. A farmer’s market is a better choice, but why not grow your own and eat them at their peak of freshness?
    Eating organic does lower your toxic load from pesticides. But you’re still losing the freshness you could have if you grew your own sprouts.
    So why not earmark some of your current produce budget to buy seeds you can sprout at home?
    How to grow your own sprouts
    So, are you ready to embark on this new and exciting, yet simple, adventure in eating? You just need a little basic equipment and some seeds.
    You can get canning jar lids and sprout your seeds in a canning jar. It’s the cheapest way to get started, but drainage is a real problem.
    An 8x10 tray two-section stackable sprouter such as the Sprout Master ( is a much easier way to go. They cost about $20 each, and come with tray, drain tray and cover. For greater variety and rotation, buy two trays. We have no affiliation with this provider.
    This is your only investment for most sprouts, besides your organic seeds. While broccoli is loaded with amazing benefits, it’s wise to consume a wide variety, for interest and nutrition. Try broccoli, alfalfa, radish, cabbage, peas, beans, and lentils.
    For tiny seeds like alfalfa, four tablespoons of seed will make a full 8x10 tray full, enough for one or two people for a few days. A tray of organic sprouts costs about $1.00 to $1.50, depending on your seed type and source… a far cry from a $6 plastic tub of organic greens.
    And growing them is simple!
    1. Select your seeds and soak in water for 10-12 hours in a bowl. Allow for a 300% expansion.
    2. Pour the soaked seeds into the drainable tray, and spray them gently to even them out.
    3. Rinse and drain, morning and evening to keep seeds moist.
    4. Sprout with the lid on. In hot climates, use a warm, damp cloth without lid for better airflow. Keep sprouter out of direct sunlight. Sprouts grow best at 75 to 80 degrees.
    5. Taste in three or four days. When you like the taste, leave them uncovered but out of direct sunlight to develop greenness.
    6. Refrigerate to stop growth. Tray units with lid/tray make excellent crispers.
    7. Scrub tray thoroughly before reusing.
    Sprouting times vary according to type of seed.
    Sprouts are an extremely cost-effective way to get your fill of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
    They’re far cheaper than high-quality supplements or organic vegetables from 2,000 miles away. Eating them may be the safest and best way of getting outlandishly fresh produce with no risk of contamination.
    And who knows? Besides their load of vitamins, you may find yourself able to shed a few pounds too. Why not give it a try?

    We’ve often told our readers that a doctor can lose his license for recommending alternative cancer treatments, or virtually any natural treatment. I personally know of at least four cases of doctors who were arrested and tried for practicing natural medicine in the United States.
    One went to jail, one saw his internationally famous clinic closed down, and two of them got off after spending a huge amount of money on legal bills. And I know a fifth doctor who was not arrested but was hauled before his medical board and had his license taken away.
    Now a doctor just wrote to tell me he got fired for the same “offense.” It makes for interesting reading, especially if you STILL think “my doctor would tell me about alternative treatments if they really worked.” That might be true if your doctor is also planning to go into another line of work.     To protect his privacy, we’ll call him “Doctor M.” He was a radiologist who performed mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and other diagnostic procedures.
    Breast radiologists like Dr. M interpret these body images to diagnose and treat medical conditions. You can imagine that he had many opportunities to deliver both good and bad news about what he saw.
    Dr. M felt that an important part of his professional responsibility was to give sound advice on preventive strategies to help reduce his patients’ risk for breast cancer.
    He found some great websites that he was eager to share with patients—and that’s what he did on a regular basis.
    But his fellow practitioners didn’t agree…
    Dr. M said other clinicians objected to his sharing tips on nutrition and supplements to help battle breast cancer. They often felt uncomfortable when patients asked questions based on information Dr. M shared with them.
     And then there's the fact that if people listened to his advice and tried some of the cancer-prevention strategies…
    …the medical establishment might not have as many cancer victims to slash, poison and burn with their traditional treatments!
    So how do you solve a problem like Dr M? You FIRE him!

    By now you must be wondering, “What on earth was Dr. M telling people?”
    For starters, he was telling them about iodine. This nutrient is found in abundance in the ocean. But it’s not as plentiful in the soil that grows most of the foods we eat.
    Many people know that an iodine deficiency can produce thyroid problems. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends 165 mg of iodine to prevent thyroid cancer in the event of a radiation emergency.
    But you might not know it can play a key role in maintaining healthy breasts too.
    Breast tissue and breast milk actually have higher concentrations of iodine than your thyroid. This is because iodine is critical for the healthy development of a newborn infant’s brain.
    Little wonder that several scientific studies have shown iodine helps prevent or treat breast cancer. If you’d like to see the full story on this, check out Issue #9.
    In one study, scientists found iodine actually deactivates genes that promote cancer—and turns on genes that promote cancer cell apoptosis (natural cell death).
    Iodine also helps regulate your cortisone levels and normalize your immune system. When cortisol levels are out of whack—you may face a higher risk of breast cancer and fibrocystic breast disease.
    But the cancer industry would prefer that you not know any of this since they can’t patent iodine. And remember…

    This rogue radiologist even went as far as sharing a website that, by its own admission, contains:
    “…information on how various foods and other factors affect breast cancer risk, prevention and prognosis. The findings are drawn exclusively from scientific studies and updated as new research becomes available.”
    The site is called Food for Breast Cancer ( Its goal is to provide information that helps breast cancer patients, those at risk of breast cancer, and survivors prevent and reverse this terrifying disease.
    This site even provides articles on what to eat based on a specific type of breast cancer you may be battling. I guess Doctor M’s colleagues were shocked that he’d steer patients to articles like these listed on the site:
    What should breast cancer patients and survivors eat during tamoxifen treatment?
    What should triple negative breast cancer patients and survivors eat?
    Does Type 2 diabetes increase the risk of breast cancer?
    Red wine: Should breast cancer patients and those at high risk drink it?
    By searching this site, I found out which oils and condiments made the list of recommended foods.
    I even learned why avocados and papayas made the list of foods to avoid.
    But I think the most shocking thing I saw were the links to dozens of scientific studies to support these food recommendations! My, that Dr. M. had a nerve!
    Dr. M’s colleagues thought he was out of line to share this information with people who were seeking solutions for a possible cancer diagnosis.
    But Dr. M didn’t stop there. He also told patients about…
    The organization that wants people to
    Dr. M found a ton of helpful information made available by the Life Extension Foundation (LEF) ( This nonprofit, tax-exempt organization says its goal is to conquer the aging process within the next decade.
    That sounds ambitious, but LEF appears to be well on the way, offering a vast collection of information on nutrition, vitamins and supplements to address many of the diseases that wreck people’s health. I buy quite of few of their products myself and I’m a fan of their excellent magazine.
    Their website includes discussions on the pros and cons of traditional cancer therapies as well as complementary alternative cancer therapies.
    In their discussion on “Cancer Adjuvant Therapy,” LEF cites a survey from The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center stating that of the 99.3% of patients who’d heard of complementary medicine, about 75% (i.e. nearly all of them) wanted more information about these options.
    And about one-half of those participating in the survey wanted the information to come from their own physician!
    We can only hope that Dr. M’s former colleagues bend to the will of the people and begin to provide this helpful advice. Had they done so sooner—they would still have the talented and idealistic Dr. M to help them out!
