US Sports CoachLab: Winning Hockey Dynamic Skating featuring Coach Steve Cady and Matt Cady & Ice Hockey Goalie Drills: Mastering the Basics

Winning Hockey Dynamic Skating featuring Coach Steve Cady and Matt Cady

To be successful in modern hockey, it is essential to master the components of explosive skating. In this comprehensive program, coaches Steve Cady and Matt Cady present numerous skating skills and drills designed to help hockey players at all levels of the game to become great skaters. Ice Hockey Goalie Drills: Mastering the Basics

  • By Emma Martin

Overview

The goaltender position is one of the most important jobs on the ice. They are the ultimate defender, the ultimate player. Goalies need to be prepared to make or break periods, games, championships. How can you prepare?

It always goes back to the basics. Mastering simple goalie skills will build a solid foundation for when you level up your training. Perfecting even the most simple skills can separate being good from being great. So, let’s go over some helpful hockey drills that can provide that strong foundation.

International goalie coach Hiroki Wakabayashi includes three important skills in his online ice hockey goalie training courses. Quick Feet, Hand Eye Coordination and Reaction drills.

Quick Feet

What better way to defeat your opponent than by simply being faster? Due to the extremely fast pace of hockey, speed is everything. Goalies must be prepared for one shot after the next, with no time to spare.

The drills to help goalies master quick feet is practicing defending shots on goal from all angles with just seconds in between. The “two shots and around drill” is a great example of this. The first shooter will take one shot from the face off dot and one from the bottom of the circle. The first shooter will then go behind the net and make a pass to the second shooter on the short side. This drill gives the goalie little time to adjust to the third shot and forces them to practice quick feet.

Winning Hockey Goaltending featuring Coach Richard Shulmistra

A similar drill to practice quick feet is the “One Shot Long Pass”. This drill substitutes the pass behind the net to in front, which increases the pace and forces the goalie to make even faster decisions on their feet.

To execute the “One Shot Long Pass” drill, you will set up one puck on the top of the circle and one on the faceoff dot, as seen above. The first shooter will take a shot from the top of the circle then quickly pass the puck from one side of the faceoff dot to the other where the second shooter will quickly shoot.

There are various ways to mix up the shooting and passing patterns in these drills that will force the goalie to practice quick feet. These rapid drills will prepare goalies for real game paced plays and help them to stay one step ahead of the opponent.

Hand Eye Coordination

Keep your eyes on the puck! This one may seem obvious, but practicing hand eye coordination drills will first help you track the puck, then help you adjust your body movements accordingly.

Pair juggling is one of the most simple drills a goalie can do to maintain a quick reaction time while enhancing their hand eye coordination. This drill is simple, yet crucial. All it takes is a partner, or even a wall.

For straight circulation juggling, you will toss your ball from your right hand to the partners left hand as you catch the ball from the partner with your left hand.

For 3 balls circulation, you will be catching with your right, hand it to your left and toss it to the partners left hand.

For Cross Exchange juggling, toss your ball from your right hand to the partners right hand as you catch the ball from the partners left hand to your left hand.

Similar to the quick feet drills, this drill can be differentiated with slight adjustments. Practicing different juggling patterns will help improve both the body and the mind, ultimately boosting coordination between the two. This fun and simple drill will allow you to work more parts of your body than you may even realize.

Reaction Time

Sometimes there is no time to think, only react. This is often the case for most ice hockey goalies. Reaction drills combine the importance of quick feet and hand eye coordination all in one. Quick hands drills are a simple way to master making saves with minimum movement.

One simple reaction drill is “Quick Hands Short-Side”. This is when two shooters take short-side high shots alternately from the inside hash marks. The goalie stays in butterfly position on the goal line and tracks the shots. You can then repeat that but with the shooters taking far-side high shots. Alternating blocking shots between your short side and far side will increase your reaction time and force you to adjust.

Another beneficial drill for practicing reaction time for when the shot is much closer is the “Gunslinger”. The puck will be on the crease and the goalie is on the goalie line, as seen below. The shooter has one second to take a shot and the goalie attempts to stop it. Wakabayashi touches on the importance of being patient enough to not make the first move.

Goalkeepers must also be able to react fast, despite where the shot is coming from. How will you react to a fast break? How will you react to a shot coming right from the crease? Your reaction is only successful if made at the right time. These reaction drills designed by Wakabayashi help you understand both how and when to react, preparing you for every possible scenario. Reaction time can be what makes the difference between a save and a goal. Which will it be for you?

Summary

These basic drills will help you build a strong foundation and prepare you for real game time scenarios. Wakabayashi has worked with goalies from the beginner to the professional level in various countries and has found these drills to be useful. Whether you're just starting, touching up on or mastering your goalie skills, these drills are crucial to improve your game.

US Sports Hockey: Strength and Conditioning: Tony Greco's Principles of Strength

Ice Hockey demands countless skills to be successful, and one of the most crucial abilities to have as a great hockey player is power. Every sport demands its specific strengths, but hockey is a different animal.

Hockey is difficult to train for as a sport that is played at extremely high speeds and has as many physical demands as football, but Tony Greco knows how to develop hockey players' strength like no other.

Off-ice training can be challenging to determine what exercises and coaches to listen to, but Tony is a trainer with outstanding expertise. These circuits are not only beneficial for on-ice abilities but teach players the pace and difficulty they should be training with for many off-seasons to come.

As Canada’s leading fitness specialist, Tony has worked with some of the biggest names in the NHL including; Claude Giroux, Brandt Clarkea and Jack Quinn. He is a top graduate of the Sports Performance Institute, and certification from his academy surpassed the National Fitness Leaders Advisory Council policies in all of personal, strength and aerobics training.

Not only does Tony offer outstanding opportunities for players to succeed on the ice but also provides knowledge as to how players should be eating, resting, and treating their mindset. Tony truly supplies players with the capability to become the top one percent of hockey players.

This 12-week program is for any position from goaltender, defenseman, or offensive player. Tony’s course is for those who refuse to cut any corners and are determined to become not just great, but exceptional hockey players. Pro Hockey Academy introduces you to the limits beyond the ones you already have and guides you on how to stay at that level for the rest of your career.

Tony’s main principles of the Pro Hockey Academy 12-week Program include:

Metabolic Conditioning

Mobility

Speed

Nutrition

Linear and Lateral Movement

Mindset

Upper Body Strength

Lower Body Strength

Go here to view Tony’s entire Pro Hockey Academy Program Course

Speed Training

Tony has varied training focus points varying from week to week throughout his 12-week program, but what he centers the majority of his training around is speed.

While there are various exercises and methods Tony does to exploit speed in hockey for his students, this circuit provides students with a great workout that focuses on explosiveness. Being able to escape your defender can be difficult if you don’t have the power, and this circuit provides you the tools to escape anyone.

Tony’s workouts are all quick-paced with multiple exercises in each round, and this circuit is no different. Despite all of these circuits being challenging, find the beauty in the pain and the capability to push as hard as you can.

This circuit is 5 rounds, 5 reps for each exercise, including; back split lunges

weighted squat jumps, plate overhead lunges, lateral squat to knee drive, and stiff-legged eccentric deadlift. Take a look for yourself.

Mobility

Strength is certainly an important aspect of hockey, but flexibility and mobility are also incredibly essential.

To perform at the highest degree your body has to be warmed up, and Tony teaches his students how to appropriately do so. We often try to jump into training very quickly, but Tony acquaints his students with how to warm up properly and apply it to not only off-ice training but could also surely be applied on the ice before games.

Tony may have a large focus on strength in his course, but he prides himself on teaching his students the importance of being loose and flexible. So every player is fully able to train safely and also perform to the best of their ability.

Here are some of Tony’s favorite warm-up routines and stretches.

null

Strength Training

Strength is the main focus for anyone getting into off-ice training, and this module will do you justice.

Gaining strength is not easy, and this module equips participants with the power every player wants in the game of hockey. And while gaining strength is something every athlete desires, this circuit is not for the faint-hearted. These workouts make you earn it, no doubt about it.

These exercises are quick and challenging, but undoubtedly routines you can imagine aiding you to become a great hockey player. Tony encourages you to push beyond your limits, and this will indeed introduce you to your limits.

This circuit is five reps for each exercise, and four rounds with the following exercises; hang clean to press, alternating splitter hang cleans, split lunges to press and finishing off with splitters to skaters. May sound like some peculiar training, but make sense once you watch the video below.

Description

Module 2: Defensive Zone. This module starts with defensive zone fundamentals.  We explore the zone without the puck, and then with puck possession.  The breakout section is quite extensive, and gets a lot of traffic.  Defensive zone tactics can have subtle variations at higher levels but all systems have common principles.  We’ll stick to the key concepts, but explore them in detail in some of the videos.  This is the module most members spend the most time studying, and revisiting often.  We encourage you to take your time here.

Defensive Pressure
The other team is so good, so how can we stop them from scoring? This module addresses key principles of defensive zone coverage that can be used on novice teams, and NHL teams alike. Not much changes as the level gets higher, the allowable margin of error just shrinks to zero. When you are done here you'll have a more complete understanding of team goals in your own zone.

Defensive Coverage
Understanding these concepts gives us a better idea of how to dictate the play while on defense. Our body position, stick placement, speed and angle of pursuit all affect the offensive players decision making.

Breakouts
We finally got the puck, now how do we get out of our zone? In this module we look at the key principles of getting out of your zone together, which always varies depending on the pressure you are getting from the opposing team. There are a few universally accepted breakouts that have withstood the test of time. We think teaching those concepts is a great place to start in this course.

Complete Course Goals
The goal of this course is to create a progression in learning from A to Z, from Module 1 to 5, but feel free to pick and choose the modules you need the most. Learning the international language of hockey is paramount in expanding your overall game understanding. If you do skip ahead, and hear terms in later modules that you do not understand, we recommend starting back at Module 1 and working your way through the entire set of modules.  We built the curriculum step by step, teaching first the terminology, then explore every zone of the ice, from defensive, to neutral, and on to offensive zone without, then with the puck.  Our final module teaches powerplay and penalty killing systems.  Get started now!
