D.C. Divas Nearly Flawless In 55-6 Rout of New York Sharks

Neal Rozendaal
Landover, MD – The D.C. Divas entered the final week of the regular season with a tenuous grasp of the #1 ranking in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) Eastern Conference standings. The Divas knew that with a strong performance against an excellent New York Sharks team Saturday night, they could secure home field advantage throughout the upcoming WFA playoffs.

The Divas needed to win convincingly, and they did. Boy, did they ever.
The offense scored a touchdown on all eight of their possessions in the game, the defense allowed just one first down outside of penalty, and the D.C. Divas rolled over the New York Sharks, 55-6, in one of their most impressive performances in recent years. The Divas locked up home field advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs and look to be peaking at the right time as they entertain the possibility of their third national championship game appearance in the last four years.
After a 20-minute delay for lightning, the Divas (6-2) chose to receive the opening kickoff. It took four plays until D’Ajah Scott broke off a terrific 49-yard run to the end zone to put the Divas on the board first. The snap on the extra point kick attempt went awry and the Divas fell on it for an unsuccessful PAT, but the Divas still led, 6-0, early in the contest.
The Sharks (6-2) are primarily a passing team offensively, and their offense would struggle all night in the wet, rainy conditions against the powerful Divas defense. The Sharks’ first offensive play led to a 15-yard facemask penalty on the Divas and an automatic first down; that would be the Sharks’ only first down for the first 55 minutes of the game. Soon after, Kianna Murphy closed in on New York quarterback Karen Mulligan as she dropped back to pass and knocked the ball free, and linebacker Tia Watkins recovered the fumble for the Divas at the Sharks’ 40-yard line.
D.C. quarterback Amanda Congialdi drew the Sharks defense offside on third and two to earn the Divas a first down at the 27-yard line, and then an 11-yard pass to wide receiver Kentrina Wilson gave the Divas a first down in the New York red zone. Congialdi soon threw her first scoring pass of the evening, with Shaquanda Gainey making a tough grab in traffic on third down for a 15-yard touchdown reception. Stephanie Nealis would convert all seven of her extra point kick attempts, and her first PAT put the Divas in front, 13-0, with 6:50 left in the first quarter.
The Sharks went three and out on their second drive and were forced to punt, and D’Ajah Scott nearly rocked the Sharks again. Scott reeled in the kick and returned it over sixty yards for an apparent touchdown, but the score was wiped out by a questionable blocking penalty that placed the ball back at the Divas’ 47-yard line.
The D.C. offense went to work again, and not even another penalty setback could slow them down. After a first down, a holding call had the Divas facing first and 20 from their own 48-yard line. But Okiima Trotter gained almost all of the penalty yardage back on a nine-yard run, and on third and nine, Gainey struck again with a great reception for 31 yards to give the Divas first and goal from the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Trotter powered into the end zone from six yards out to give the Divas the lead, 20-0, with just nine seconds left in the first period.
As the second quarter began, the D.C. Divas’ defense continued to assert their dominance. Three incomplete passes forced the Sharks to punt again to the Divas’ 41-yard line.
The Divas started to break out some big plays on their first drive of the second quarter. Two long catches by Wilson for 25 and 16 yards, respectively, netted first downs, and Shelly Freeman had a 15-yard run mixed in the drive as well. Freeman capped off the charge with a six-yard burst into the end zone, and the margin was 27-0 in favor of the Divas with 10:15 left in the first half.
Momentum was clearly on the Divas’ side at that point, and D’Ajah Scott kept the ball rolling when she recovered the ensuing kickoff for the Divas at the Sharks’ 45-yard line. An 11-yard run by Christiana Burton started the drive, but it looked as though the offense would be stalled by another holding penalty that brought up second and 20. Undeterred, Congialdi rushed for 13 yards to make it third and seven, and Freeman responded with an eight-yard run for a first down at the New York 23-yard line.
On fourth and eight, the Divas decided to go for it. Congialdi threw a pass to the end zone, and Lois Cook hauled it in and tiptoed her way in for a touchdown. Cook’s touchdown reception gave the Divas a 34-0 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half.
After losing two yards in three plays, the Sharks were again forced to punt on their next drive, with the Divas taking over at their own 23. The Divas’ offense polished off a magnificent half by putting together a 77-yard scoring drive. It got off to a quick start when Curtina Pope made a dazzling 25-yard run into New York territory. Kentrina Wilson then got into the scoring action, reeling in a 42-yard pass from Congialdi for a touchdown. Six different players scored touchdowns in the first half as the Divas seized a 41-0 advantage with just over a minute left in the second quarter, and that was the score heading into the halftime break.
With the prospect of more lightning looming, a running clock was instituted after halftime, which made the second half move extremely quickly. The Sharks received the second half kickoff, and Miteka Trueheart soon cashed in on New York’s third turnover of the game. Trueheart snared Mulligan’s pass and returned it to the Sharks’ 37-yard line, setting the Divas’ offense up for success again.
Three runs by Shelly Freeman netted 23 yards to the New York 14, and Christiana Burton then toted the ball for eight yards down to the six-yard line. Freeman finished it from there, carrying the ball the final six yards into the end zone for her second touchdown of the contest. The Divas led, 48-0, midway through the third quarter.
On their next drive, the Sharks gained nine yards on first down and were threatening for their first non-penalty first down of the game. But the D.C. defense forced three straight incomplete passes, with Kucheria Eades swatting down a pass on fourth and one to turn the Sharks over on downs at their own 39-yard line. The Divas’ defense allowed just three non-penalty yards of offense and no non-penalty first downs in the first three quarters of play.
The Divas would only have time for two more offensive plays in the third quarter before the running clock signaled the end of the third period with the Divas on top, 48-0.
Courtney Smith started the fourth quarter with an eight-yard reception on third and seven to net the Divas a first down at the New York 28. Curtina Pope then made another sparkling run, this time for 20 yards to bring up first and goal at the eight-yard line. After a three-yard run by Pope, Okiima Trotter scored her second touchdown of the game on a five-yard blast over the goal line. The Divas held a 55-0 lead with 11:10 left in the game.
The running clock was running even faster now, and the Sharks went three and out after gaining no yards and were forced to punt with six minutes remaining in the contest. But then the Divas, who had played a nearly flawless game to that point, made their first of two rare miscues on the evening. The Divas’ punt returner touched the ball on the ensuing punt, and the Sharks recovered the fumble at the Divas’ 32-yard line with five and a half minutes left in the game.
On the very next play, Karen Mulligan dropped back and found Brilynn Fields behind the D.C. defense for a 32-yard touchdown pass with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The pass resulted in the final points scored in the regular season in New York Sharks history, and it also counted as the Sharks’ first and only non-penalty first down of the contest. The extra point kick attempt sailed wide of the mark, but the Sharks eluded a shutout, 55-6.
The Sharks kicked off but were penalized and forced to re-kick, and by the time the Divas recovered the second kickoff, the rapidly running clock signaled the end of the game. The D.C. Divas defeated the New York Sharks, 55-6, and held on to their claim as the winningest team in the history of women’s football.
The Sharks, who have announced that the 2018 season will be their last, concluded their final regular season with an all-time record of 130-46. Their 130 victories are the second-most in women’s football history, behind the D.C. Divas’ all-time record of 132-42. Despite the loss, the Sharks – who compete in the WFA’s Division II – earned the top seed in the WFA2 Eastern Conference playoffs and will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs themselves.
For the D.C. Divas, their victory locked up home field advantage in the Eastern Conference playoffs in the WFA’s Division I. The Divas will make their 15th postseason appearance in franchise history – a women’s football record they will share with the Sharks – on June 30 at home against the Atlanta Phoenix in an Eastern Conference semifinal matchup.

D.C. Divas Announce 2018 Season Schedule and Home Field

Divas Set to Return to Landover for 2018 Campaign
Neal Rozendaal
Washington, DC – The D.C. Divas announced their schedule for the 2018 season today, once again taking on some of the top competition in all of women’s football. The Divas also announced that they will be returning to the Prince George’s Sports Complex as their home field in 2018, making their home in Landover for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
The D.C. Divas are the winningest team in women’s football history, earning a record 126 victories against just 40 losses in 17 seasons of play. The Divas have won three national championships in 2006, 2015, and 2016, and they were the first team in the history of the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) to win back-to-back national championships with their titles in 2015 and 2016.
The Divas embrace playing one of the toughest schedules in women’s football; the Divas’ strength of schedule has been ranked as one of the two most difficult in the sport eight of the last nine years. D.C. Divas fans will see another outstanding slate of home games in 2018, featuring some of the best competition women’s football has to offer.
The 2018 D.C. Divas will make their home debut on Saturday, April 21, against the Philadelphia Phantomz. In last year’s season opener, the Divas went on the road and held off the Phantomz for a competitive 28-8 victory. Philadelphia, which competed last season in the WFA’s Division II, finished second in the regular season in WFA2’s Northeast Region and will be a strong contender for postseason honors again this year.
The Divas then return home in mid-May for the start of a daunting two-game home stand. First, the Divas welcome their archrivals, the Boston Renegades, to D.C. on May 19. The Renegades, the defending WFA Eastern Conference champions, eliminated the Divas from the playoffs last season by a 27-24 score. Their appearance in D.C. last year resulted in a dramatic 26-22 overtime win for the Renegades, and this year’s contest should feature the same level of excitement and competitive play. Boston has competed in four of the last eight national title games – winning three – and has compiled an 82-12 record over the last nine seasons.
Just one week later, the D.C. Divas will host their longtime rivals, the Pittsburgh Passion, in a Memorial Day weekend game on May 26. The Divas topped the Passion in thrilling fashion last season in D.C., securing a 35-34 overtime win on the final play of the game. Pittsburgh has assembled a record of 92-19 over the past 11 seasons.
Finally, on June 9, the D.C. Divas will conclude their 2018 regular season with a special home game against the venerable New York Sharks. Holding an overall record of 124-44 over 19 seasons of play, the Sharks rank second all-time in victories in women’s football history, two behind the Divas’ 126. The New York Sharks have announced that their 20th season of play in 2018 will be their last, making the June 9th contest against the Divas the final regular season game in the Sharks’ storied history. The Sharks’ regular season finale will be a contest between the two winningest teams in the sport’s history, two franchises with a combined 250 victories between them.
The Divas will play their 2018 home games at Prince George’s Sports Complex in Landover, Maryland. After one year in Northern Virginia, the Divas are returning to their familiar surroundings across the street from FedEx Field in Landover. Prince George’s Sports Complex was the Divas’ home field from 2006-2016, and the Divas are pleased to be returning to Landover for their 2018 campaign.
Season tickets for the 2018 D.C. Divas are now on sale at http://dcdivas.com/tickets/ All home games will be held at the Prince George’s Sports Complex in Landover, MD, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. List the Divas player you would like to support during checkout, and 100 percent of the proceeds from your purchase will be applied to the training fee of that player.

D.C. Divas Survive Late New York Rally, Hold Off Sharks, 21-18

Neal Rozendaal
New York, NY – The D.C. Divas came into Saturday night as the winningest team in women’s football history, one win ahead of the New York Sharks. The Divas will retain that title for a few more weeks at least…but the Sharks certainly made them earn it.
The D.C. Divas built an early 21-0 lead and then survived 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to stave off the New York Sharks by a 21-18 final score. The Divas improved to 122-36 in franchise history, while the Sharks dropped to 120-40 after this battle between two of the most storied teams in women’s football.
The game could not have started better for the Divas (2-0). The Divas elected to kick off, and New York fielded the kick at the five-yard line. As the punt returner tried to make a play, Genaya Davis forced a fumble. The ball bounded into the end zone and Whitney Simms recovered it for a Divas touchdown. Stephanie Nealis kicked the extra point, and the Divas led, 7-0, just seconds into the game.
The Divas’ defense then went to work, forcing a three and out on New York’s first offensive possession before a short Sharks punt gave the Divas the ball at the New York 20-yard line. But the Divas were only able to gain one yard in three plays, and a 36-yard field goal attempt by Nealis came up short of the crossbar to keep the Divas’ lead at seven points.
The Sharks (1-1) drove the ball deep into D.C. territory on their next possession. The Divas’ defense eventually stiffened, however, stopping the Sharks two yards short of a first down on fourth and long at the D.C. 20-yard line.
The Divas were unable to do anything offensively, and after a punt to their own 45-yard line, the Sharks were on the march again. They drove into the D.C. red zone, but on third and long, the Divas’ defense made New York pay. Safi Mojidi picked off a pass by New York quarterback Karen Mulligan, and with the help of several nice blocks, Mojidi returned the interception 94 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half. Nealis’ extra point kick put the Divas in front, 14-0, after one quarter of play.
The Divas continued their strong play as the second quarter began. Following a three and out by the Sharks, D’Ajah Scott made an electrifying punt return all the way down to the New York 10-yard line. Okiima Pickett punched the ball over the goal line from two yards out, and her first score of the year gave D.C. a 21-0 advantage early in the second quarter.
New York would threaten on their next drive, however. Mulligan found a receiver behind the Divas’ defense and completed a pass down to the D.C. 13-yard line. But for the second week in a row, Trigger McNair – a 19-year veteran of the game – intercepted a pass deep in D.C. territory to stave off the scoring threat.
The Divas’ offense responded with a nice drive to midfield before being forced to punt. The Sharks charged through and blocked the punt, giving them possession at midfield. The Sharks and Divas exchanged punts to end the first half, and the Divas went to intermission on top, 21-0.
New York kicked off to the D.C. 21-yard line to start the second half, and incredibly, the entire third quarter would be played inside the Divas’ 30-yard line. Just as remarkably, the stout Divas defense would allow New York no points in the third quarter despite playing 15 minutes within thirty yards of the D.C. goal line.
The Divas gained just seven yards in three plays to start the third quarter, and D.C. decided to go for it on their own 28-yard line. The gamble didn’t pay off, however; a fourth-down pass fell incomplete and the Sharks were set up with great field position.
The D.C. defense rose to the occasion. After New York gained a first and goal at the D.C. four-yard line, Dex Walker recovered a Sharks fumble to halt the Sharks’ drive. But the Divas were unable to advance the ball from the shadow of their own end zone, and a bad snap on the ensuing punt led to New York taking over at the D.C. four-yard line.
The defense responded, forcing an incomplete pass from Mulligan on fourth and goal. But once again, the offense could not pick up a first down, and another bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Sharks another chance at the D.C. 15.
The Divas then made yet another ferocious defensive stand. Mulligan threw an incomplete pass in the end zone on fourth down, but the Divas were flagged for pass interference, giving the Sharks first and goal from the three-yard line. The defense held strong again, and on fourth down, Mulligan once again threw incomplete in the end zone. But the Divas were again tagged with a fourth-down penalty, giving the Sharks yet another first down at the three-yard line.
The D.C. defense stopped the Sharks on three straight plays, bringing up fourth and goal as time expired in the third quarter. On the first play of the final period, Mulligan threw incomplete in the end zone, and this time, there were no flags. The Divas turned the Sharks back on 12 successive plays at their goal line and the Divas took over at their own two-yard line.
The offense still could not find any rhythm deep in their own territory. After two straight failed punt plays, the Divas decided to try a surprise fake punt at their own eight-yard line. But the pass fell incomplete, and the Sharks once again had first and goal, this time at the D.C. 8.
The Sharks cashed in with their first score of the game in the most improbable way possible. Mulligan threw a pass that ricocheted off of her intended receiver and up into the air. New York offensive lineman Dayna Moneta snatched the ball out of the air and ran it into the end zone for New York’s first touchdown. After a failed extra point run, the Divas led, 21-6, early in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing drive, the Divas’ offense finally had some decent field position for the first time in the second half. But Kendra Bates – who entered the game in relief of Amanda Congialdi in the second half – threw an incomplete pass on fourth down at the New York 43-yard line to turn the ball over on downs.
The Divas’ defense, which had been dominant for so much of the game, then had its biggest lapse of the contest. On the very next play, Sharks wide receiver Brilynn Fields slipped behind the Divas’ defense, and Mulligan hit her for a 57-yard touchdown. Although the two-point conversion pass was incomplete, the Divas’ lead had shrunk to 21-12 with eight and a half minutes remaining in the contest.
The Divas worked to bleed the clock, driving into the New York red zone before turning the ball over on downs at the New York 16-yard line. The two teams then traded possessions in Sharks territory, further running the clock down as the Divas clung to a nine-point lead.
With Mulligan at the controls, the Sharks made one last rally against the Divas’ defense. New York took advantage of a few completed passes and a couple of timely D.C. penalties to drive the ball down the field, and Mulligan threw a 12-yard touchdown strike with less than a minute remaining in the game.
The two-point conversion pass was incomplete, but shockingly, the Sharks had scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and cut the Divas’ seemingly comfortable lead after three quarters to 21-18 with under a minute to play. The Sharks’ onside kick attempt was unsuccessful, however, and the Divas ran out the clock to preserve a hard-fought 21-18 victory over the New York Sharks.
The Divas return to action on April 22 for their 2017 home opener against their archrivals, the Boston Renegades.
