Bulldogs Week #10 Preview - Elizabeth City State

BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State Bulldogs are coming off a record setting 86-14 Homecoming win against the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University. Bowie State set a new record for points scored in a game with the 86 points scored on Saturday.  The Bulldogs improved its record to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in CIAA play. Even after a dominating win, Bowie State remained 20th in the AFCA Coaches' Poll but dropped one spot in the Super Region 2 Poll to the number five team in the region.

Last week the Bulldogs were number four in the region poll and were in place to host a playoff game. In the first round of the playoffs seeds two through four host playoff games as the number one seed receives a first round bye. This a key week for the Bulldogs in terms of playoff seeding.

In terms of CIAA play, the Bulldogs have a lot to play for as well. Bowie State can still clinch the Northern Division title with a win against Elizabeth City and Virginia Union beating Virginia State by 18 points or less. Virginia Union beating Virginia State and the Bulldogs beating Elizabeth City will put all teams at a 6-1 conference record, hence a three-way tie. Breaking that three-way tie will go to point differential in which Virginia State would be +12 in their win over Bowie State (47-35). Bowie State then would be +18 with their win over Virginia Union (40-22). Virginia Union would not only have to beat Virginia State, but win by 19 points or more to clinch the Northern division title to overcome the Bulldogs +18 point differential. Anything 18 points or less in a win for Virginia Union the Bulldogs would advance to the CIAA championship, as long as they defeat Elizabeth City. All of this could also be voided if Virginia State defeats Virginia Union on Saturday as well.

Bowie State will first need to handle their own business against an Elizabeth City State squad who is looking to play spoiler and end a four-year losing streak to the Bulldogs. Elizabeth City State is entering with the reigning Defensive Lineman of the Week in senior Jerrell Timmons who is coming off a three-sack performance against Virginia Union.

The Bulldogs should be prepared as every offensive lineman for the Bulldogs this year has won CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week once this year. On offense the Vikings have duel threat quarterback Daquan Neal who the Bulldogs will look to contain. Senior defensive lineman Sean Copeland and junior, CIAA defensive player of the year candidate Derrick Tate will look to harass Neal all day long. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday in ECSU's Roebuck Stadium.
