General Fitness Programs are designed for overall health and the achievement of a leaner, stronger body. Best. Exercise. Ever.

I’m often approached and asked to pin down a single exercise as the one that will help lose the most fat and tone the quickest. That’s not an easy question to answer.

You see, I’m very aware of the fact that though an exercise may be perfect for Cindy, it may not be the best choice for Bob—hence my hesitation to label any exercise as the universal best.

That being said, some exercises are definitely better than others. And, yes, there are even a few that I would call the best.

What makes an exercise the best?

When you decide which exercises to include in your routine, it is important to consider the type of movement involved. The simpler the movement, the fewer calories you’ll burn and the fewer muscles you will strengthen. On the other hand, the more complex the movement, the more calories you will burn and the more muscles you will strengthen.

To put it simply, exercises that use complex movements will deliver better results than exercises that use only simple movements. Complex movements recruit multiple muscles, some to stabilize and others to perform the movement. This process keeps your heart rate higher than a simple exercise would, giving you a more intense workout.

What is a complex movement?

A complex movement is a multi-joint movement that recruits large portions of the body to complete the exercise. Let’s compare a simple movement leg exercise with a complex movement leg exercise:

The leg extension machine uses a simple, isolated movement to work the quadriceps. You’re in a seated position moving only your knee joint. There isn’t much involvement, if any, from other muscles and it doesn’t burn very many calories.

Now let’s look at a free weight walking lunge. You start by standing with your feet together and a dumbbell in each hand at your sides (or a barbell across your shoulders, or a medicine ball held at your chest, or even with no weight at all). You take a large step forward and lower your back knee, keeping your front knee at a 90 degree angle. Now you push off your front foot and pull your back leg forward, repeating the movement.

How many muscles did you utilize while performing the lunge? Probably too many to count.

You certainly worked your quadriceps, gluteus, hamstrings, calves, abdominals, supporting muscles in your shoulders, arms and back—just to name a few. You also raised your heart rate and really kicked your metabolism into high gear. That’s what I call a great exercise.

Other ways to increase intensity

Using complex movements are just one of many ways to kick your workout intensity up a notch. Try incorporating a Super Set into your routine. To do so simply perform two or more exercises in a row and then take a short rest.

Or how about a Compound Set? Perform one exercise, rest, then perform an exercise with opposing body parts. To find exercises that compliment one another, choose ones that have similar but opposite motions such as a chest press and a row.

The key to finding the best exercise is to find the ones that bring your workout intensity to a whole new level.

I’d be shortchanging you if I named any exercise as the best. The fact of the matter is that it is a combination of changing your workouts up, using interval training, and even some good old cardio that will ultimately see you to your goal.

These methods will help you to burn more calories, increase your metabolic rate, and will stimulate the production of more fat burning and muscle toning hormones. Of course, there is more involved to achieving your fitness goals.

You need to incorporate fat burning into your routine.

You need to consistently challenge yourself during workouts.

You need to take control of your eating habits and to get your diet dialed in.

Dan’s Story

I came across the Hitch Fit website a few years ago and always thought the results were too good to be true and that is was another online scam. Despite my initial impressions, I was still curious, then one day I recognized an old work colleague on the website and this then gave me the reassurance Hitch FIt was the real deal. It still took me a couple more years to finally commit, I was always concerned how I would manage the requirements of the program around my shift work and family life, but I am glad I finally did, my only regret was putting off the decision for so long.

Micah is very clear at the beginning of the program, you need to be 100% committed to changing your life. I can only reinforce this point, the program is tough, it does impact your lifestyle, your family, and your kids. However, 12 weeks is such a short period of time in your life to ensure you are the fittest and best version of yourself you can be. The effort required to complete the program is worth every bead of sweat and every ounce of pain, as you will NEVER look back once you complete the program.

The first week was brutal, I struggled with the volume of exercise and my body struggled to recover, but as time went by all the unnecessary wasteful things I was doing at home, like watching TV, especially watching nothing in particular became not so important and this freed up time for exercise or food prep. The results as very quick, even at the end of the first week, (despite giving up coffee) I noticed increased energy levels, consistent energy levels, and improved sleep length and quality.

Well the day finally came to see my progress from week one, I was apprehensive, I had worked so hard during the week I did not see any difference in the mirror and did not want to be disappointed. I stepped on the scales, well was I surprised, I had lost 3.3 lbs in the first week, whilst some of this is probably water weight, I continued to lose weight and inches every week, in numbers I would never have expected to be maintained.

Week five came along and I hit a hurdle, I injured my back and couldn’t move for two days, I was flat on my back in bed. I thought the week was going to be a write off, the world was working against me to stop me completing the program. I sought treatment and rested for the two days and managed to continue the program for the remainder of the week.

“I found the program interesting and the changing weight program every four weeks, helped keep the motivation levels high.”

12 weeks to awesome

Another challenge I found was the nutrition plan, whilst I generally enjoy most foods, I have never enjoyed or even liked oatmeal. It was a real struggle for me and the beginning of the program, well it’s amazing what 12 weeks does, as it is now my preferred breakfast, even after finishing the program.

The program is both physically and mentally exhausting, my main advice to anyone contemplating the program, trust yourself, commit to the journey, commit to becoming the best version of yourself, and trust the program. You will have highs and low through the program, enjoy the highs, work hard through the lows. You will have obstacles, these are to test you, not to stop you. The results and benefits are worth every bit of energy you expend on the program.

Thought you needed this

Self-sabotage is your subconscious way of protecting yourself.

Sounds crazy, but it makes sense when you realize that it is a defense mechanism meant to keep things in your life from changing. You say that you want to lose weight to look and feel amazing, but your subconscious is pulling the strings behind the scenes, keeping your goals just out of reach. As long as your subconscious believes that you are safer being out-of-shape then you'll be stuck. Your most valiant efforts will be undermined by self-sabotage every single time. Frustrating, right?

But don't give up. There's a way to turn everything around, and it all starts with finding out the reason that your subconscious views being out-of-shape as being safe. Once you turn the light on to that reason then it will no longer have any power over you. So, lets dig around for your reason.

Do you believe...Change is bad? It’s common to fear the unknown, but this could very well be the reason that you’re not reaching your goal. Being comfortable with where you are today could be the reason that you sabotage your efforts to improve your life through change.

Do you believe...Success will bring loss? If you met your weight loss goal, would it bring out resentment and jealousy in your friends and family? Are they counting on you to be the ‘screw-up’?

Do you believe...You don’t deserve it? Has someone in your life made you believe that you aren’t worthy of success? Or that they wouldn’t accept you if you were more successful than they are?

Do you believe...You’re not capable? Are you unable to imagine yourself at your goal weight? Does the possibility of achieving your goal not seem real?

Spend time thinking about these tough questions and discover why it is that you aren’t meeting your goals. Once your whole mind is primed for success, then nothing will be able to stop you.

Today’s transformation really puts a smile on my face. Desiree lives in the Kansas City area, so she was able to come and work with me in person. She has gone through so much in her 36 years. Part of her struggles included being at 250 pounds 3 different times in her life. Her weight is something she has struggled with her entire life. The first day she came into the gym, she was hopeful, but uncertain. Her weight was at 178 pounds at that time, she just wanted to get to a place where she felt comfortable and confident. She wanted to wear a bikini with confidence. She wanted to see her abs for the first time in her life. She had tried so many things, and nothing seemed to work to get where she wanted to be. I took a look at where she was, and explained that we would be aiming for a little over 20 pound loss to get there, and I assured her it was possible if she was willing to follow the plan. She said, “I’ll do whatever you tell me.” She was ready.

Desiree is a busy mother and business owner. But she was committed to the process. She did her Bikini Body Plan and supplemented that with coming in to the gym to see me twice a week. She was diligent and committed, and we started to see the scale come down and body fat start to reduce. She started to see changes in her body. Some days I’d have her do an exercise in front of the mirror so she could see what I did as far as new definition in her muscles. To see her face light up every time she saw a new muscle pop through was priceless.

In 16 week’s Desiree’s body had totally transformed. She nailed her goals, and got the bikini body that she was aiming for. She shared with me that one of her dreams was to take Bikini pictures on a truck that she could show her husband. Well, we got to do just that for her after pix! Even though it was pretty darn cold out, she got in that bikini and took those pictures she had dreamed of being confident enough to do. It was an amazing day. I’m so proud of this gal, so proud of her diligence and dedication, and so proud of her inspiring success! Congrats Des!!

Desiree’s Story:

“To me it sounds like the typical story..

I have weighed 250 lbs 3 times in my life.

The first time I lost weight with a “fad diet” but put it right back on. The second time I had hit the turning point in my life. I knew if I didn’t change my eating habits and lifestlye that it would kill me. So I started doing cardio everyday. Within 6 months I weighed 175. I stayed at this weight for years until I got pregnant with my beautiful daughter. Which put me right back at 250 pounds. It took me 6 months of cardio to lose the weight again back to 175.

At this time I had a lot of extra skin that hung from my body. I called a plastic surgeon and thought this is the way to “see the abs” that I feel under my skin. I went threw with lower body lift. And still after that I continued my cardio and still my abs never came. Trying every fat loss pill on the market. They still never came.

I have always watched people At the gym an thought wow how do they look like that. Muscle definition was my new goal. I didn’t care to “lose weight” because I had never been smaller than 175 since I was 13 years old. I did not believe it was possible. I told my husband that I wanted a trainer so he sent me to a football coach!! “Thanks babe” That did not work out AT ALL because the no-carb diet made me crash within two weeks. I have always known it had to be the way I eat. I ate healthy foods but would starve myself if I saw the scale get to 178. I decided that if I got a trainer I wanted it to be someone that looks like they work out. Not someone that is bigger than me telling me what I need to do. I wanted my trainer to “walk the walk”.

I searched diligently online for a female trainer. Even after the first time I met Diana. I was still skeptical. She told me to see my abs I would I have to weigh 154. I said ok but I can’t get to that. I have never weighed that.

Diana put together my nutrition plan. Again I thought NO WAY can I eat that much food in one day. I was used to drinking coffee all day to curb hunger and maybe eat once a day.

16 weeks later. Here I am! Goal weight met! I can see my abs! And I honestly can not believe that I look like this. For the first time in my life I got in a bikini and was proud! This has completely changed my life!

There were some days I would go into the gym and think I do not have time today. Or would be so stressed out from work that I could not even think. So busy running a business and being a mommy.

Diana made me relax every time I was around her. She helped build my strength mentally and physically. God put her in my life at the most needed time. She is such an inspiration to me as a business owner, a trainer, and in her faith! Diana, I hope you know how much your story has touched me & and how much your tools have changed my life. I thought, “Great I can only jog 2 mins at a time. Now I can run 30-45 minutes straight and have been able to since the end of my second week of training. Types of Exercise

Fitness is most easily understood by examining its components--cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility.

Cardiovascular endurance is the body's ability to do large muscle work, i.e. moving the body over a period of time. This ability is dependent on the cardiovascular system's ability to pump blood and deliver oxygen through your body. Cardiovascular endurance should be a central component of your overall fitness program. Improving cardiovascular endurance increases your supply of oxygen and energy to your body. It also decreases your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and other life-threatening diseases.

When a heart is well-conditioned, it is like any other muscle--it becomes stronger and more efficient. A normal heart beats at a rate of approximately 70 beats per minute at rest or about 100,000 beats a day. The well-conditioned heart can actually beat as few as 40 times a minute at rest or approximately 50,000 beats per day. A well-conditioned heart conserves energy, and can supply oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body with half the effort.

Strength is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert an amount of force, typically in a one-time burst of effort. Weight-lifting (or "resistance training") is a classic example of strength-training because it increases muscle strength and mass, as well as bone strength, by placing more strain on muscles and bones than they are used to. When you lift weights, muscles are forced to meet that challenge by generating more force-generating proteins to feed the "fibers" that grow during exercise.

Most muscles have a combination of two types of fibers that are challenged during strength-training activities: Fast-twitch fibers provide the explosive force needed for weight-lifting or activities such as sprint racing. Slow-twitch fibers are for endurance, such as the ability for muscle to withstand fatigue. Most muscles have a 50-50 blend of fast-and slow-twitch fibers, but others have an advantage one way or the other. When you make muscles work harder, you actually tear these fibers. As they rebuild, they get stronger and bigger, resulting in harder, tighter and larger muscles.

Muscle Endurance is the ability to resist fatigue and continue to exercise over long periods of time. While strength-training is needed to maintain muscle strength, endurance training is required to achieve stamina. Muscular endurance is the ability of muscles to continue working strong without rest, such as the ability of a quarterback to throw long pass after pass.

Flexibility is the ability of joints and muscles to achieve a full range of motion. This results in the preventing injuries and helps keep your body feel comfortable after exercise. Despite popular opinion, there's no evidence that you should lose flexibility as you build muscle.

Unfortunately, there is truth that the natural aging process can rob you of muscular strength, endurance and flexibility--if you don't maintain them. That's why a regular fitness regimen becomes increasingly important as you age.

I wasn’t really looking for a change when I came to Hitchfit. A friend of mine asked me if I would want to try the program with him and I agreed, why not? We talk so much about Hitch Fit being about a healthy lifestyle change, a Lifetime Fitness Plan that can be utilized at any time in the future. We encourage clients to develop and embrace new eating and exercise habits for life since that is the only key to long term success! Not every client completes transformation in 12 or 16 weeks, there are a lot of things in life that can come up. And guess what, that is o.k.! Since the goal is a lifestyle change, this isn’t a journey that just ends in 12 weeks time. And if it takes longer than 12 weeks to get to that healthy and balanced place in your life, that’s also o.k. (and guess what, very normal for a lot of people!!). We always encourage clients who fall off track or back into old habits, or who have curve balls of life thrown at them, to just get back on track as soon as they can, and just keep moving forward. There’s nothing that can be done about yesterdays choices, but there IS something that can be done about today’s!

In light of this, I was so delighted to receive a message from a Hitch Fit Online Personal Training client who signed up for her program back in 2012. She did incredible for her first 10 weeks and made wonderful progress. But the pressures of school and exams and other life issues caught up with her and she found herself sliding backwards. Ashley’s Story:

“In 2012, I moved across the country leaving all my familiar surroundings behind. I was starting my first year of University and moved into residents to get the full University experience. Along with this experience came many things, a breakdown in my long-term relationship and a steady weight gain. I traded in going to the gym and making healthy choices for unhealthy foods and alcohol. I was so unhappy. It was right before Christmas break that I realized that I had hit rock bottom. I needed something. I began looking online to try and find help and guidance for an online personal trainer to get me back on track. This is when I found Diana & Micah at Hitch Fit. I sent my email and soon after Diana sent me my new program! I felt so many emotions. I was overwhelmed with excitement and was eager to get started! She provided me with endless information about how to be successful. It was soon after that I realized this was going to be important to me for the rest of my life. I knew from the beginning it wasn’t going to be easy. I was making my meal plan work with cafeteria food and making some of my meals in our community kitchen. It was added stress of “I wonder if the cafeteria food will fit my meal plan tonight” but I made it work. Getting workouts in plus cooking on top of my first year course load wasn’t easy. A lot of sacrifices were made and I got a lot of comments like “how do you do it .. you’re crazy”. For 10 weeks I shared my results with Diana weekly and I had lost many inches and dropped my body fat %. At that point I had “quit”. It was exam season and I fell for the sugary treats and late night pizza. My unhealthy relationship with food was overpowering.

It was a long summer of trying and failing and eventually hitting my heaviest weight of 185 in October 2013. I was once again striving to try and find BALANCE in my life using the nutrition and mental strategies that Diana taught me back in 2012. At this point, when none of my clothes fit I knew I needed change. I worked endlessly finding just the balance that I had been looking for. It may have taken me longer than I had planned but I am so happy to say that I have finally achieved what I had always been striving for. I feel strong, healthy, fit and most importantly HAPPY! Hitch Fit gave me so much confidence and the mindset that when you really want something there is a way to get there.
