Today's guest articles deals with something many of us adults have to address, particularly as we are coming off the "parteyying" of the Holiday season. I get more questions about alcohol consumption this time of year than I do ab workouts! Here are some more smart folks with some good guidelines to help you manage while having fun.

The Bar Facts -- The Truth About Alcohol, Straight Up

The health risks for young women who drink are higher than they are for men. "It's OK to enjoy yourself and drink in moderation," says Meir Stampfer, M.D., professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "But young women shouldn't think it's going to be a health plus." Here, we answer some key questions about alcohol.

Q: Does a glass of wine a day protect against heart disease?

A: Many studies suggest that moderate alcohol consumption (no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men) helps prevent heart disease the leading cause of death among women. What's the catch? For women, risk of heart disease remains low until menopause (usually around age 50). So for premenopausal women, the protective value of a glass of wine is nil.

Q: Does drinking make you fat?

A: Alcohol is high in CALORIES. But moderate drinking is unlikely to have much of an effect on your weight.

Conventional diet wisdom says that if you drink, you tend to eat more. But the true effect of alcohol on weight is controversial. In one large-scale study of female nurses, those who were moderate drinkers weighed less than women who abstained. Why? Dr. Stampfer, one of the study's authors, is reluctant to link alcohol consumption with leanness. Other research, he says, suggests moderate drinkers may be more active and therefore weigh less. Some other experts believe that much of the energy in alcohol is quickly burned off as heat and is therefore not stored by the body as FAT but so far this is only theory.

Q: Can women not handle as much alcohol as men because of their smaller body size?

A: Within minutes of drinking the same amount of alcohol as a man, a woman's blood alcohol level is much higher. But the difference is only partly due to a woman's smaller size. Another key factor: Alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme that starts to metabolize alcohol in the stomach, is less active in young women than in men, so more alcohol goes directly into a woman's bloodstream, and it gets there more quickly. This not only means you get drunker faster, it also means you're more vulnerable to the negative health effects of alcohol, such as alcohol-related liver damage.

Q: Is breast cancer the biggest health risk for women who drink heavily?

A: Studies suggest that heavy drinkers face increased breast cancer risk and that moderate drinkers may have a small increase in risk. But the greater and more immediate risks of drinking are impaired judgment and its consequences unprotected sex, car accidents or of harming a fetus by drinking during pregnancy.

Q: How much drinking is OK?

A: There is no one-size-fits-all advice. For some people it is unwise to drink at all for example, if you're pregnant or if alcohol-related problems run in your family (which may place you at risk for alcohol abuse).

Otherwise, the levels believed to pose little or no health risk are no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men. (A "drink" is 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or one-and-a-half ounces of 80-proof liquor.) Don't panic if you occasionally split a carafe of wine with a friend. But don't make a habit of it.

Bikini Body Plan Changes This Mom and Business Owners’ Life

Bikini Body Plan for Moms

Today’s transformation really puts a smile on my face. Desiree lives in the Kansas City area, so she was able to come and work with me in person. She has gone through so much in her 36 years. Part of her struggles included being at 250 pounds 3 different times in her life. Her weight is something she has struggled with her entire life. The first day she came into the gym, she was hopeful, but uncertain. Her weight was at 178 pounds at that time, she just wanted to get to a place where she felt comfortable and confident. She wanted to wear a bikini with confidence. She wanted to see her abs for the first time in her life. She had tried so many things, and nothing seemed to work to get where she wanted to be. I took a look at where she was, and explained that we would be aiming for a little over 20 pound loss to get there, and I assured her it was possible if she was willing to follow the plan. She said, “I’ll do whatever you tell me.” She was ready.

Desiree is a busy mother and business owner. But she was committed to the process. She did her Bikini Body Plan and supplemented that with coming in to the gym to see me twice a week. She was diligent and committed, and we started to see the scale come down and body fat start to reduce. She started to see changes in her body. Some days I’d have her do an exercise in front of the mirror so she could see what I did as far as new definition in her muscles. To see her face light up every time she saw a new muscle pop through was priceless.

In 16 week’s Desiree’s body had totally transformed. She nailed her goals, and got the bikini body that she was aiming for. She shared with me that one of her dreams was to take Bikini pictures on a truck that she could show her husband. Well, we got to do just that for her after pix! Even though it was pretty darn cold out, she got in that bikini and took those pictures she had dreamed of being confident enough to do. It was an amazing day. I’m so proud of this gal, so proud of her diligence and dedication, and so proud of her inspiring success! Congrats Des!!

Desiree’s Story:

“To me it sounds like the typical story..

I have weighed 250 lbs 3 times in my life.

The first time I lost weight with a “fad diet” but put it right back on. The second time I had hit the turning point in my life. I knew if I didn’t change my eating habits and lifestlye that it would kill me. So I started doing cardio everyday. Within 6 months I weighed 175. I stayed at this weight for years until I got pregnant with my beautiful daughter. Which put me right back at 250 pounds. It took me 6 months of cardio to lose the weight again back to 175.

At this time I had a lot of extra skin that hung from my body. I called a plastic surgeon and thought this is the way to “see the abs” that I feel under my skin. I went threw with lower body lift. And still after that I continued my cardio and still my abs never came. Trying every fat loss pill on the market. They still never came.

I have always watched people At the gym an thought wow how do they look like that. Muscle definition was my new goal. I didn’t care to “lose weight” because I had never been smaller than 175 since I was 13 years old. I did not believe it was possible. I told my husband that I wanted a trainer so he sent me to a football coach!! “Thanks babe” That did not work out AT ALL because the no-carb diet made me crash within two weeks. I have always known it had to be the way I eat. I ate healthy foods but would starve myself if I saw the scale get to 178. I decided that if I got a trainer I wanted it to be someone that looks like they work out. Not someone that is bigger than me telling me what I need to do. I wanted my trainer to “walk the walk”.

I searched diligently online for a female trainer. Even after the first time I met Diana. I was still skeptical. She told me to see my abs I would I have to weigh 154. I said ok but I can’t get to that. I have never weighed that.

Diana put together my nutrition plan. Again I thought NO WAY can I eat that much food in one day. I was used to drinking coffee all day to curb hunger and maybe eat once a day.

16 weeks later. Here I am! Goal weight met! I can see my abs! And I honestly can not believe that I look like this. For the first time in my life I got in a bikini and was proud! This has completely changed my life!

There were some days I would go into the gym and think I do not have time today. Or would be so stressed out from work that I could not even think. So busy running a business and being a mommy.

Diana made me relax every time I was around her. She helped build my strength mentally and physically. God put her in my life at the most needed time. She is such an inspiration to me as a business owner, a trainer, and in her faith! Diana, I hope you know how much your story has touched me & and how much your tools have changed my life. Thank you for everything I am so thankful to have met you! And to Micah…the first day I felt so Intimidated when you said you want to see your abs “start running”. I thought, “Great I can only jog 2 mins at a time. Now I can run 30-45 minutes straight and have been able to since the end of my second week of training. Blame it on the food, blame it on Micah’s words, blame it on NEVER GIVING UP!

Just a quick note. We will be switching your programs to more "football like training" depending on the days that you are training here is what your programs will be called. This switch will take effect this weekend and your workouts will be ready to go as of this coming Monday.

If you are training 5-6 days per week then you will be switched to the NFL Combine Workout. You can see a sample here

IMPROVE YOUR CORE CHEERLEADING STRENGTH WITH THESE 3 CHEERLEADING WORKOUTS

Good morning Athletes and Warriors!
As we set out in 2017 to do better, what we have been doing for over 18 years now; that's of course help as many athletes and warriors that we can. We reach out the what I personally believe are pound-for-pound the best all around athletes at your school. The Cheer Leaders!

That's right. With the combination of dance, gymnastics, balance and endurance, few sports are more demanding. So when you see your Squad on the sidelines this fall, the best will train year round to perform better and avoid the typical injuries that occur.

If you're ready to take your cheerleading skills to the next level then it's time to incorporate some cheer-specific core workouts into your regimen.If you're ready to take your cheerleading skills to the next level then it's time to incorporate some cheer-specific core workouts into your regimen.

Core exercises will help to ensure that you maintain good base stability so that each and every time you land from a jump, you're able to stay on top of your feet and carry on right to the next movement. Those dancers who have poor core strength will really struggle with this, which can significantly hinder their performance.

To help boost your core, let's look at some great exercises to incorporate into your training.

Handstand Plank
The first of the core exercises that you'll definitely want to get in place is a plank on an exercise ball. The plank itself is excellent for generating good muscle endurance and strength and then by placing the hands up on the exercise ball, you only intensify it.

Note that this one is rather advanced to do, so if you can't hold a normal plank for at least 30 seconds on its own, work on building up to that first and then advancing from there.
If you jump onto the ball too soon, you won't be able to stabilize yourself.

Roll-Up on Core Ball
Next is the Roll-Up on Core Ball. When performing this exercise make sure to keep your core engaged. Because you're working with a core ball you get the added benefit of working the core muscles in the front of the stomach as well as the obliques, so really is a great choice all around.

Perform it in a slow and controlled movement pattern to keep as much tension as possible on the muscles at all times.

Supine Lateral Ball Roll with Hip Extension
Finally, last but not least, consider the Supine Lateral Ball Roll with Hip Extension. This is a good one to add to your cheerleading workouts because it's core focused and hits several muscle groups. Furthermore, it's great to maintain good body control as well, which can be helpful when doing more advanced cheerleading movements.

Kyaja Williams Layup Lifts Bowie State Bulldogs to 54-52 Win Against Winston-Salem State


BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University women’s basketball overcame a 19-point deficit and rallied to defeat Winston-Salem State University 54-52 on Saturday (12/31) afternoon. The win, Bowie State’s eighth in a row, improves the Bulldogs record to an impressive 11-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in CIAA play.

The Bulldogs defense held the Rams to just four fourth quarter points while scoring a game-high 22 points in the decisive quarter. Junior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) came off the bench for the first time this season and led the Bulldogs in scoring with 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) fell just short of a double-double, contributing 11 points and nine rebounds.

Bowie State junior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) recorded nine points followed by junior Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) and freshman Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) with six and five points respectively. Junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) tallied four points and five rebounds while sophomore Lea Whitehead rounded out the Bulldogs scorers with two points.

Winston-Salem State (5-7, 1-1 CIAA) was led in scoring by seniors Taylor Boyd (Saint Louis, Mo.) and Jasmine Carter (Lexington, N.C.) with 12 and 10 points respectively. Senior Trei Torain (Roxboro, N.C.) hauled down a team-high rebounds and Boyd pulled down seven rebounds in the loss.

The Rams led 13-6 after one quarter and went into halftime with a 31-17 advantage over the Bulldogs and shot 59.1 percent from the field (13-of-22) in the first 20 minutes of action. Compare that to Bowie State’s frigid 20 percent first half shooting (7-of-35).

The Bulldogs used a 12-8 third quarter run, trimming the deficit to ten points (39-29) by the 3:08 mark. However, the Rams closed the third quarter with a 10-3 run to take a 48-32 lead into the final quarter.

Bowie State closed the gap back to ten (50-40) with 6:23 remaining in the game and really began to put the clamps on the Rams. A layup by WSSU’s Carter at the 4:49 mark would be the final points for the visitors with the Rams holding a 52-43 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs closed out the final 4:49 with an 11-0 run to snatch a huge victory over the Rams. A pair of free throws and a layup by Clyde closed the margin to 52-47 with 1:58 on the A.C. Jordan Arena clock. Colston sank two free throws and back-to-back layups by Williams, shifted the advantage over to Bowie State for the very first time all afternoon at 53-52 with 27 seconds left in the game. Colston added one final free throw to account for the final margin.

Bowie State women’s basketball hits the road for its next three games, starting with a Thursday (January 5th)conference clash at Saint Augustine’s University. Game time for the Bulldogs and Lady Falcons is 5:30 p.m.

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University men’s basketball squad closed out 2016 with an easy 82-68 home conference win against visiting Winston-Salem State University on Saturday afternoon in the A.C. Jordan Arena. With the victory, the Bulldogs win its second consecutive conference game and improve to 3-0 in the league and 6-7 overall.

Junior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a career-best 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting (5-of-7 beyond the arc) to pace five Bulldogs in double figure scoring. Senior Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) pumped in 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and tied his career-high in blocks with four. Seniors Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.), Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) and Khary Doby (College Park, Md.) tallied 11 points each.

Junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) scored a personal season-low six points and sophomore Christopher Manning (Randallstown, Md.) chipped in two points for the Bulldogs.

As a team, Bowie State closed out the contest with a field goal shooting percentage of 46.7 (28-of-60) and knocked down 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of their free throws.

The Bulldogs held a very comfortable 43-26 lead at the half, shooting 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the field over the first 20 minutes and an impressive 8-of-10 at the charity stripe.

On the flip side, Winston-Salem State made 11-of-37 first half field goals (29.7 percent), which included 1-of-9 behind the 3-point line and converted 3-of-10 at the free throw line.

Outside of the games’ first nine minutes, the Rams trailed by double-digits most of the game, but were able to pull within eight at 50-42 at the 11:10 mark of the second half following a William Crandall (Bethel, N.C.) dunk. From that point, Bowie State went on an 11-0 run to erase any hopes for Winston-Salem State.

Winston-Salem State (5-6, 1-1 CIAA) had three players score in double figures with Ameer Jackson (Concord, N.C.) leading the way with 20 points. Crandall notched a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds while Carlos Rankins (Greensboro, N.C.) was responsible for 13 points in the loss.

Julius Barnes (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jamel McAllister (Raleigh, N.C.) chipped in six points apiece for the Rams while the duo of Robert Colon (Jacksonville, N.C.) and TJ Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) contributed four points each.

The Bulldogs hit the road for a three-game CIAA Southern Division swing, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Saint Augustine’s on Thursday, January 5th in SAU’s Emery Gymnasium.
