US Sports Football: Get Your Offense a +1 With the QB Run Game and Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills Game Highlights

  • By Coach Grabowski

“Don’t change the play. Change the presentation.”

It’s something that David Marsh heard often and built in to the philosophy and design of his offense. Marsh is the offensive coordinator at FCS Texas Southern after sebring as the OC at Campbell, and as an assistant at Texas A&M.

Marsh believes in being able to get an advantage for the offense by strategically utilizing the QB run game.  He has systematized that within his offense.

Why the QB Run Game?

- Numbers advantage - Gain a hat - extra blocker or combo

- Schemes can be what you use already

- Simple - snap it to our best player or someone dynamic

- Option - read a different player on every play if you want

- Situational - 3rd and 4th down or scoring zone

- Change-up - present something different - especially a team you see twice in a year

To systematize the QB run attack, Marsh categorizes the Run Types:

- Direct QB Runs - snap it to him and go

- Bluff QB Runs - fake it to someone and run

- Read QB Runs - read any defender in the box

When game planning, for Marsh it all comes down to numbers, and the QB creates the advantage.

Numbers

Box Counts open sets (10P)

5 man box: run  (+1)

6 man box: read (even)

7 man box: throw (-1 move the pocket, get into something else)

QB runs add 1 for offense to all of the above!

Add one to the scenario

5 man: Take advantage of being balanced up with the run ex. Zone Leads, Isos, Counters with RB leading as extra hat.

6 man: 5 blocking, must read vs 6 (can be any of them). With QB - Direct runs for when you don't want QB reading. Ex. Power, Lead Draw

7 man: Covering down receivers with 4 defenders in secondary (cover 0 or Rat) must win on outside with sprint/boot movement to one side or quick and get the ball up and out

Schemes that can be used:

- Zone

- Stretch

- Draw

- Fold

- Gao (power/counter)

- Dart

- Pin-pull

With the list above, it should be apparent that the QB run game fits with what you already do. This makes it simple for the offensive line and allows continuity. Because it’s simple, these work good within a tempo offense as well.

The diagrams below show examples of the Direct and Bluff categories.

Having a system for QB runs like Coach Marsh has put together will allow you to have clarity in your game planning in how you want to attack a defense.  He has put this all together and shared it with game video examples in his course “Quarterback Run Package: Creating a System.”

The best part is when you decide to add this, it only changes the presentation of the play!

Brian Gimmillaro

Head Coach of Women's Volleyball at Long Beach State

"Regarded as one of the top volleyball minds in the country, Brian Gimmillaro will have administrative oversight of both the beach and indoor volleyball programs at Long Beach State.  Honored in 2008 with induction into the AVCA Hall of Fame, Gimmillaro has led his Alma Mater to three NCAA Championships and eight Final Four appearances in women's volleyball, and will help usher in a new era as the leader of an emerging sport in sand volleyball.

Long Beach State has a tremendous tradition of producing fine beach volleyball players that have found great success worldwide. That list would certainly include Misty May-Treanor, arguably the greatest women's beach volleyball player in the world. May-Treanor is the all-time tournament wins leader in both professional and international competition, and with her partner Kerri Walsh, will be attempting to win a third straight Olympic Gold medal in London in 2012 after reaching the sport's pinnacle at both the Athens Olympics in 2004 and the Beijing Olympics in 2008. May-Treanor's journey started at Long Beach State, where as a two-time National Player of the Year, she led the 49ers to the first perfect record in NCAA history on the way to a National Championship in 1998, Gimmillaro's third title.

Many other players have starred in beach volleyball after working under Gimmillaro's tutelage as well. Jenn Snyder and Brittany Hochevar are both among the nation's top money winners in professional beach volleyball. Alicia (Mills) Polzin was a member of Gimmillaro's first NCAA championship team in 1989, and has competed in beach volleyball for over 20 years. Gimmillaro has been consistently one of the best coaches in the indoor game as well. He ranks 14th in Division I history with 789 career wins, and ranks in the Top 10 among active coaches in both total wins and winning percentage at the Division I level. Gimmillaro graduated from Long Beach State in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Gimmillaro has two children, a son, Stefan, and daughter, Lauren."

US Sports Football: The Hot Gap plus 3 Gap Scheme RPO’s to Stress the Defense and Raiders/Chargers Highlights Week 2

  • By Keith Grabowski

The first wave of RPO saw the inside zone and in general, zone runs as the run portion of the RPO. They were simple, allowed for every gap to be accounted for in blocking responsibilities and fit well for many spread teams who implemented RPO. It was and still is the easiest way to use RPO.

Of course, offense is about innovation, so it didn’t take long for Gap Schemes to find their way into the RPO world. With the use of more 11, 12, and 21 trending, Gap Schemes become more and more prevalent including their use in RPO.

Gap schemes do require a different approach though. In gap schemes, the pullers essentially move the gaps to a location in a formation. The movement of the pullers certainly induces linebackers to move to fit those gaps which makes it attractive for RPO.

FAU Offensive Coordinator Brent Dearmonentdearmon">FAU Offensive Coordinator Brent Dearmon probably describes the understanding necessary for the QB in his execution of the Gap Scheme RPO by identifying what he calls the “Hot Gap.”

As Dearmon explains, “You can’t serve two masters.” In other words, each player can only be responsible for one gap.

With this understanding, the QB can avoid being hit while executing a Gap Scheme RPO. It gives the offense a sound approach to using the gap scheme with RPO. Coach Dearmon explains it in this video:

null

That’s a helpful coaching point that allows an offense to remain sound with the Gap Scheme as a run in the RPO.

The other approach which gives the offense a hat on a hat is utilizing a QB run with the RPO.

Let’s take a look at three well-designed QB Gap Scheme RPOs.

#1) QB Power RPO

2021 National Champion Ferris State is at the top of NCAA D2 offensive rankings every year. Their offense features a strong QB running game.

In general, the QB run game balances up numbers, but why not provide the QB with safe options and numbers advantages by putting that run into an RPO.

That’s exactly what Ferris State likes to do and OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator Sam Parker explains it here (click on image for video):

null

#2) QB Counter with Screenreen

A simple way to stress the defense from 20 personnel is to motion one of the backs out and swing him for a screen. The motion puts numbers to the perimeter causing the defense to bump and move the LB away from their run fits. It creates a simple read for the QB and opens up the running lane inside if the defense doesn’t honor the swing screen on the perimeter. Olivet Offensive Coordinator Calvin Renfroe explains it here (click on image for video):

null

#3) QB Counter with TE Pop Pop

Coach Eric Marty has created a tight end driven offense which he utilizes to shred defenses.  Behind this high-powered offense, he’s climbed from JUCO to the FCS and now to the professional level in the USFL as the Michigan Panthers OC.

One of the concepts that put extreme stress on quarters coverage is the QB Counter RPO with TE Pop Pass. It creates big-play potential. The QB run immediately creates a plus one without the fit. The Mike has to fit as well. His guard key pulls left and if he goes, then the Y is open in a void on the pop.

He diagrams it here (click on image for video):

null

The RPO continues to evolve in every type of offense. For the teams who like to run their QB, it’s a great way to stress a defense with the extra hat that can be devoted to the run and passing attachments that take advantage of leverage, early triggers on run fits, and numbers advantages given by defenses trying to stack the box.
