Bulldogs Fall 65-63 to Elizabeth City State
· BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State men's basketball team got a 20-point showing from the bench, but fell 65-63 to the visiting Elizabeth City State Vikings at home Thursday night in A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Bulldogs (6-19, 4-9 CIAA, 2-5 North) had two players score in double figures, led by senior Quinton Drayton, who had 18 points. Junior Joel Webb tacked on 16 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Caleb Johnson added four points and two steals.
Led by Webb's five offensive rebounds, Bowie State pulled down 14 offensive boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
Bowie State's defense held Elizabeth City State (11-13, 5-8 CIAA, 4-3 North) to only 33.3-percent shooting from the field, including 23.8-percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 24-22 advantage, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run with 2:44 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from senior Keith Duffin, Jr., to increase its lead to 30-22. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 30-27 advantage. BSU did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 30 points close to the basket.
The Vikings proceeded to tie things up at 47-47 before Bowie State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by junior Anthony Carpenter's three, to seize a 52-47 lead with 8:52 to go in the contest. Elizabeth City State then asserted control, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-11 the rest of the way to hand Bowie State the 65-63 loss. The Bulldogs got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 33 total points.
