Playoffs Preview: Jacksonville vs. Columbus

Sharks look to Prey on Lions in Postseason 
JACKSONVILLE – The (13-1) Jacksonville Sharks are riding high on a 13-game win streak and number one seed as they head into the playoffs following a record-breaking 85-30 victory over their in-state rival the Orlando Predators. This Tuesday,  August 6th the Sharks will face the #4 seeded Columbus Lions (6-8) at the Veterans Memorial Arena with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The Sharks swept the Lions in their 2 matchups this season. Columbus will have to defeat a Jacksonville team that hasn’t lost since April.  Is there hope for the Lions? They have defeated the top-seeded team the last 2 years to advance to the Championship game so we will see. The National Arena League has a four-team playoff bracket, this year the Jacksonville Sharks are #1, Carolina Cobras # 2, Massachusetts Pirates #3, and the Columbus Lions #4, each have earned their ticket to the Playoffs but only two can advance to the Championship!
This rivalry dates back to 2017 as the early rivalry between Columbus and Jacksonville has led to some very exciting games. Overall the Sharks are 7-2 against the Columbus Lions and are 5-0 when playing in Jacksonville. The last time these rivals met in the Play was in the first-ever NAL championship game, where the Sharks took down the Lions in a thrilling 27-21 nail biter. Heading into this week, the Sharks are feeling confident after a seven-interception performance against the Orlando Predators (2-12) last weekend. Not only did they record seven pics, they returned three of them for touchdowns. The team set another franchise record for the most points scored in a single game with 85, besting their defeat of the New York Streets 83-51.
The Sharks offense is looking red-hot as both quarterbacks have played well this year. Fafaul and Bane have combined for 3,163 yards, 74 touchdowns, and only 17 interceptions. Wide Receiver Devin Wilson finished the season in second place for receiving yards (1,179) and receiving touchdowns (29). All season long, he has proven to be an unstoppable force and has played a major role in the Sharks high-powered offense.

Between the two teams, the Sharks lead the league in scoring offense (805) while Columbus leads the league in total offensive plays (616). The Lions lead in field goals made (6) and Jacksonville leads the league in deuces made (23). Defensively the Sharks tip the scale in almost every category. The most impressive stat line has Jacksonville leading the league in sacks (40) and interceptions (36). An odd stat has the Lions being haunted by the number 22, giving up 22 sacks and 22 interceptions over the season.  Will it be a BIG day for the Sharks D-line? Be there to find out. Week Two:  It has been 14 weeks since these two teams last played. There have been massive roster changes on both teams in that time, so while the Cobras won the last game these two played 50-22 these are really only the same uniforms.
Playoff Tough: The Carolina Cobras are the defending NAL Champions and are 2-0 in playoff games in their history. This is their second season in the playoffs in two seasons in the league. Massachusetts is also on their second playoff run in two years, but last year they lost in the first round to Columbus, and we hope that will happen again for them this year.
Playoffs: This is the Cobras game you must be at if you possibly can, we need your help Cobra Nation. Tickets are either $10 or $20 for ALL Seats other than Snake Pit Section (first two rows on the sidelines). Yes, you read that right, just $10 or $20 for ALL Seats other than the Snake Pit Section!! How They Rank: This is a battle between the #2 Scoring Offense of the Cobras (51.4/game) vs #3 Scoring Defense of the Pirates (47.1). On the other side of the ball it is the #3 Scoring Offense of the Lions (48.4) vs the #1 Scoring Defense of the Cobras (31.1).
League Leaders: The Cobras finished the regular season as the leaders in the following categories: Scoring Defense (31.1), Total Defense (181.6), Total Offense Yards Per Play (6.2), Rushing Defense (15.9), Pass Defense Efficiency (95.4), Passing Defense (165.6), Passing Yards Per Completion (11.8), Passing Yards Per Attempt (7.0), Field Goal Attempts (17), Fumble Return TDs (4), Opponent Penalties Yards Per Game (55.8), Red Zone Defense (63.6%). Mike Green leads Passes Defended (44 NEW NAL Record). Micah Robinson is #1 in Tackles for Loss with 17.0.
The Real Season Starts Here:  Yes, you can look at the standings, but at this point they mean absolutely nothing. Last season it was #4 Columbus Lions beating the #1 Seed Massachusetts Pirates to make it to the NAL Championship. This is where every mistake counts as does every big play. This is simply win or go home.
Back in the Groove: In talking to Coach Back earlier this week he confessed that the Cobras have been preparing for Massachusetts for the last two weeks, so that, plus his suspension for the game, could explain a lackluster performance against Columbus. Take out that game and the Cobras have shut out their opponents in 12 of the 14 quarters before that game. Watching this team in practice this week you can better believe they are focused on the task at hand.
Turnover Battle: Carolina comes into this game with a +17 turnover ratio which is #2 in the NAL. The Pirates on the other hand come in with a -1 turnover ratio. This is the playoffs, so I am not scared to predict, the team that wins the turnover battle is the eventual winner of the game.
Matchup to Watch: The Trenches You have great playmakers on both sides of the ball, this is going to come down to the dirty jobs. How does the Cobras offensive line hold up against a Pirates defense that has 30 sacks, while the Cobras line has given up 24. On the other hand, can the Cobras defense keep up the pressure, they have 36 sacks on the year compared to the 25 given up by the Pirates.
Last Meeting: April 20, the Cobras dominated the Pirates 50-22 in Greensboro to go 2-0 in week 2.
Series History: Carolina leads the series 4-1 including both games this season.

Phone Etiquette at the Gym: The Do's and Don’ts

It pains me to even need to put out such an article but we live in a world where an item that never seems to leave our hand is our phone. Phone etiquette goes a long way in public and is even more important (especially for privacy reasons) at the gym. Remember the days where people would train to a boombox in the corner and everyone was checking their form in the mirror? No, me neither. That was WAY too long ago. Nowadays, what people are listening to is music streaming from their phone while snapping selfies of themselves in the mirrors with good downlighting. All I can do is shake my head. 
This article I want to lay some ground rules for proper phone etiquette at the gym. If you follow them, you’ll go unnoticed. Heed my advice.
8 Things You NEED to Know
  1. DO listen to music or podcasts on your phone
It’s extremely boring to exercise without anything playing in the background. For that reason, many people listen to their favorite music or even an educational podcast to help them improve a skill set or learn something while exercising (killing two birds with one stone). Regardless, be respectful and don’t blast your music or podcast and do yourself and everyone around you a favor by not singing along with your tunes. Get in a zone with what you want to listen to and crush your workout.

  1. DON’T sit on equipment and watch videos between sets 
The gym isn’t a movie theater. You can’t simply lay down on the leg press with your feet up and start watching videos, shows, or movies. Do that on your own time. Your rest periods should be short so you keep your workout intense. Try not to rest for more than a minute if you’re looking to build muscle and even shorter if you’re trying to lose weight and burn calories. You can watch Netflix or whatever you want to view when you get home.

  1. DO track your workout
If you want to track your workout, great. However, when you are done, put your phone back in your pocket. Having your phone simply laying around or constantly in your hand gives people an uneasy feeling. Not only could your phone get broken if stepped on or if a weight were to fall on it, but having it always in your hand makes you seem like a creeper who is going around taking pictures of people. Log your set in your phone, see what your next exercise is and weight needed and keep moving. Tracking your workout is a great way to ensure you are progressing and overloading the muscle each workout to see progress. You could bypass all of this by simply purchasing a workout log or workout journal where you simply use a pen/pencil and document your workout – no phone needed. 

  1. DON’T waste time texting and emailing
When you go to the gym, are you there to exercise or to chit-chat? Exercise, right? Then why are you spending time on your phone texting and emailing? You’re taking up space in the gym that could be occupied by another person. You’re wasting not only your time but the time of others by having improper phone etiquette. Save your conversations on your phone until after your workout. If you have time to text and email on your phone, you’re not putting in maximum effort and intensity with your workout. Get in your workout and then return those messages later when you get home or back to work.

  1. DO talk to people at the gym and offer your support and encouragement
Everyone is at the gym for the same reason – to achieve their goals. Helping others stay motivated is an amazing way to create an ideal environment in the gym. Strength is in numbers and when everyone is supporting each other, motivation levels are high, you stay committed to your workouts and coming to the gym, and it helps you stay accountable. Supporting and encouraging others at the gym also shows you’re personable and not some miserable person who comes to pick things up and put them down and then leave without making eye contact with anyone or cracking a smile.

  1. DON’T talk to people on your phone
This is a phone etiquette no-no that I see way too many people doing. Whether you’re talking on your phone directly or through a headset, you are going to annoy just about everyone in the gym. The gym is a place for people to get away from everyday life and work and simply escape to get in a killer workout. You’re hurting the atmosphere of the gym by bringing your affairs with you to the gym. No one wants to hear what you’re doing tonight or how terrible your meeting was at work.

  1. DO take progress pictures (at home)
There’s no better feeling in the world than looking at old photos and seeing your transformation. Use your phone for something good (outside of the gym) by taking pictures of yourself. Try to be consistent by taking weekly pictures, bi-weekly, or monthly. This will show you how you’re progressing as time passes. It will show all the hard work you have put in with your diet and with your training.

  1. DON’T block the gym mirror for selfies
I saved the best (or you could say the worst) phone etiquette offense for last. Any gym you go to, you will experience this many times and we all know “those people” who are the worst offenders. They are the people who stand in front of the mirror and snap photo after photo of them posing. They’ll change poses, move into better lighting, make funny faces, and then sit there for the next 10 minutes posting the photo to social media, making sure they get all the best hashtags. STOP! The mirrors in the gym are to help you focus on your form and posture – not for you to stand there and snap selfies all day.

Phone Etiquette is IMPORTANT
As you can see, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things at the gym when it comes to the use of your phone. Phone etiquette is something I wish more gyms would regulate. But to stay on the good side of the other members of the gym, keep your phone in your car or locker, only use it when necessary (such as to change songs or log a set), and abide by the phone etiquette rules mentioned above.

Dunwoody, Georgia --- DUNWOODY POLICE DEPARTMENT --- On Thursday, August 01, 2019, at 11:35 AM, Dunwoody Police officers observed a driver violating the Georgia hands-free law on Ashford Dunwoody Road near Interstate 285 west. Officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, 35-year-old Derric Alexander Simpson of Decatur, GA.
 While speaking with Mr. Simpson during the traffic stop, Mr. Simpson began to put the vehicle in gear. Dunwoody Police Officer Nathan Daley reached into the vehicle in an attempt to stop Mr. Simpson from fleeing. Mr. Simpson accelerated with Officer Daley still partially inside the vehicle. Officer Daley held on to the vehicle as Mr. Simpson sped away.
 While holding on to the vehicle, Officer Daley told Mr. Simpson to stop the car multiple times, but Mr. Simpson would not stop. Once on I-285 west, Mr. Simpson struck a white Ford van, knocking Officer Daley to the ground. 
 Another Dunwoody Police officer pursued Mr. Simpson west on I-285. Mr. Simpson was involved in a multi-vehicle crash just before Roswell Road. The Dunwoody Police officer pursuing Mr. Simpson pulled up as Mr. Simpson was fleeing on foot from the wrecked vehicle. The officer gave chase and took Mr. Simpson into custody moments later.

• Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer

You Don’t Have to Know

We all have situations that we don't see how they're going to work out. We do our best to find a solution, but there are some things God doesn't want us to know. He has the solution, but if He showed you right now, it wouldn't take any faith. If you could see the provision, the healing, the favor that He is going to bring, it would be easy to believe. The test comes when we don't have the answers. Thoughts tell us, "How are you going to make it after you retire? What if your health doesn't improve?" Sometimes there is no logical solution. The more we try to reason it out, the more discouraged we get. This is what faith is all about. You don't have to figure it out and come up with a plan. You have to be comfortable not knowing.
When Moses led the two million Israelites out of slavery into the desert and toward the Promised Land, they were excited. God had just delivered them from Pharaoh after hundreds of years of captivity. I can imagine them asking Moses, "What route are we going to take?" Moses answered, "I don't know." "Where are we going to get food and water?" "I don't know." "How are we going to protect ourselves?" "I don't know." They could have said, "Moses, what kind of leader are you?" But just because you don't know doesn't mean God doesn't have a plan. Moses was comfortable not knowing. He had such a trust in God that he didn't have to understand how everything was going to work out. He took it one step of faith at a time. Take the pressure off. You don't have to know; God knows.
I'm the type of person who wants to know. I like to have a plan. I'm always trying to figure things out. When I don't see a way, I used to get stressed. It's very freeing when you learn this principle that it's okay to say as Moses did, "I don't know how it's going to work out, but I'm at peace." You're taking yourself off the throne and putting God on the throne. When we're trying to figure everything out and manipulate a solution, we're being God. As long as you're on the throne, God will step back. But when you say, "God, I'm not going to spend all my time trying to fix something that only You can fix. I trust You. I know Your plans for me are for good." When you're comfortable not knowing, God will get you to where you're supposed to be.

I'm following the listed series as suggested below and/or leave a rest day/active rest day after 3 days of working out in a row, if I feel it's too intense and I need a bit of a break.

I didn't work out on a regular basis during the last few years—it was rather an on & off thing—but decided to commit myself this time to make it to the intermediate level again. Looking through the programs and the forum I was missing a more structured approach to progress and decided to create my own instead.
About Hanni…
I've been active in fitness since 2002, mostly playing volleyball and hitting the gym regularly. Eventually, I left this behind and started working out with BR in 2010–back then I was on an intermediate fitness level—but fell off the wagon in 2015. Afterwards, I've been working out on and off with BR, other fitness providers and created my own programs for a while, but decided now, to give BR another shot with more dedication to the journey.
So, thanks so much to the whole team for making so many different training programs available. I absolutely enjoy & really appreciated them
