Fit Flagellation: Why Feeling Guilty Over Missed Workouts Is Ruining Your Results
You've
missed a workout. You planned to do it, but you woke up late. Or got
called into work early. Or your usually rough-and-tumble kid is home
with flu, sucky and needs you within spitting distance at all times. Or,
maybe, you just don't damn well feel like it. Not today, at least, and
there doesn't seem to be a reason why, which makes the ensuing guilt
over your missed workout worse. The guilt: that's worse for you than
actually missing the workout. Missed workouts are going to happen —
that's part of life — but what doesn't have to be part of life is the
fit flagellation that comes with not being able to slide into beast mode
every single day of your life. Working out is supposed to be something
you enjoy, and when it's not — when it becomes something that feels
more like a punishment — it's not going to be an activity you're going
to want to stick with long-term. And your long-term relationship with
fitness needs to be nurtured. Sure, short-term goals are important to
keep us focussed and accountable, but the long-term is where the real
results happen. The visible lean gains. The reduced risk of heart
disease, diabetes and cancer. The improved hormonal balance. The fat
loss. These take time — time you won't give yourself if you're
constantly berating yourself over a missed workout. You’ll be more
likely to give up entirely.
Guilt: Motivator and Menace
Guilt has a place. Feeling it can let us know when we've done something wrong. From a societal standpoint, it can help us be better people.
However, in a world awash with Insta-Fit Queens and Kings perpetuating
what seems to be an effortless love affair with working out, it's easy
to let this emotion run a bit too rampant. If you're feeling guilty
because you NEVER work out, okay, your guilt in this context can be a
powerful motivator to help you be a healthier, happier person. But, if
you usually workout and have just had a bad day or week — or hell —
even weeks, then it may be time to back the hell off yourself and show
yourself some TLC and understanding. You want to get back in the gains
game, to be sure, but you want to get back in the game willingly, even
enthusiastically, most of the time (cause let’s face it, even the most
dedicated of us has days we just don’t want to work out.) If you’ve been unmotivated for awhile, however, consider why. Is it because you’re tired and need a rest day? Then
take it! Banish any feelings of guilt with the knowledge you’ll come
back to your next workout with renewed strength and focus, ready to
crush your sweat ‘sesh. Also be aware that over-exercising can lead to
feelings of anxiety, so if you’re feeling super guilty and irritated,
you may need that rest day more than you think. Are you not working out because you don’t have time?Fair
enough — we’re all busy, and some days, there actually won’t be time,
especially when last-minute emergencies pop up that need attention. This
said, you may also need to revisit your idea of how much time you need
to get a good workout. As little as 12 minutes of HIIT a day has been
shown to significantly reduce fat, build muscle, improve brain and
cardiovascular health and enhance focus. And when you train withSweatflix
from home, you don’t need to drive to a gym, or even get dressed.
Workout in your gitch. Workout in your pjs. Just stop whatever you’re
doing, and workout. If you’re new to Sweatflix, you don’t even have to
feel guilty about spending money, since you can get your first 30 days
for free. Are you not working out because you’re bored? If
you’re doing the same workout or type of workout all the time, you will
be! And your motivation will fly out the window. Variety is key. Again,
lean onSweatflix.
We have thousands of workouts including combat, rep-based, timed,
strength, cardio, plyometrics, yoga and more. Boredom is not an option.
Also, battle boredom by picking up new equipment. New toys can breathe new life into your workouts, making them more fun, more challenging and as a result, yielding more gains. Are you not working out because you’re depressed or stressed? You probably already know that exercise has been shown
to help make you happier and less stressed, but knowing this and
actually gathering the motivation to act on it are two different things.
We get it. A few months ago, we published the story of one of the
members of our #FitFam, Lesley, who shared her fit journey with us. Part
of the journey involved the tragic death of her daughter.
Understandably, finding the motivation to workout was a struggle. “Along came September 15, 2018
when my life changed forever. My oldest daughter (only 22), took her
life. I felt lost and alone. I reached out to Jo Bolger, my first time
ever communicating with anyone from the BodyRock community. She has
helped me in so many ways and I am so grateful. It is so amazing that
this community can connect you with people that help heal your soul.
When I told her I couldn’t work out anymore because it made me cry, she
said, “Cry the whole time, scream if you have to.” So that’s what I
did.” You can read the whole story here, and join our community here.
Lesley’s example is an extreme one, and not everyone will deal with
this heartbreaking situation the same way, but the point is this: your
workouts are supposed to be the safe space you come to when life is
kicking the shit outta you. They aren’t supposed to be the source of the
shit. Whether you workout or take a break, don’t let your fitness
become a punishment. Your workouts are reward for the gift of a body,
breath and life.
If it doesn’t feel this way, then
it’s time to rethink the way you think about your fitness, and why you
workout. You’re reading this, and that’s a good start. We want to know: do you experience fit flagellation? What, if anything, do you do about it? Tell us in the comments.

Available in hardcover, e-book and audio book, read by yours truly. :) Your Body is Screaming For Water! Part - 1
By: Rob Barrie
Hi everyone! Finally got
enough juices to start writing again! It has been a while since my last
article about water hydration, but I have been busy reading new books. I
want to share some Yes! water hydration news! This is the first of 12
article chapters on water hydration. I have been a water drinker all my
life. I have been drinking alkaline water for the past 3yrs. I found out
through reading books and talking to doctors across the country that
the human body possesses a variety of sophisticated indicators when it
runs short of water-emergency indicators of dehydration and thirst. The
body has many more than one "dry mouth" indicator of water shortage. Equally
obvious, the greatest tragedy in medical history is the fact that
medical professionals have not understood the human body's variety of
calls for water! They have traditionally restore to using chemicals and
"procedures" to deal with chronic dehydration of the body! This is a
monumental mistake, but a blatant fact!! We are now at the dawn of a new
era in the medical science. It is chronic water shortage in the body
that causes most of the diseases of the human body! The original design
of the human body is more complete than you can imagine.
If we
have not known how to maintain it until now, it is our own fault. We
have to stop and think, if the body is mainly water, where will it get
its top-up if we don't drink water on regular basis? The health care
crisis of America that bankrupt the nation if permitted to continue in
its present trend, is not caused by the way it is operated Nor is it
entirely the result of greed based pricing. It caused by most primitive
mistake in the basic premise in science of physiology that is foundation
to all medical and scientific knowledge of the human body. It is caused
because the public and the professionals don't yet know when the human
body is thirsty for water! Be sure and read part-2 of Your Body Is
Screaming For Water! I will discuss Why"Medicine Doesn't cure Disease.

Baltimore Police released the body worn camera footage of Sergeant Ethan
Newberg from an incident on May 30th. Police say Lee Dotson passed a
criticism of the officer as he was arresting someone and making him sit
on a wet curb. Dotson was walking away when Newberg chased. Then the
younger officer with Newberg also charged Dotson, tackling him — knee in
his back. The other view from that officer's body worn camera shows him
pointing his weapon at the man they originally stopped...which
qualifies as use of force. Once things calm down and more officers make
the scene on Ashton Street in Southwest Baltimore
Newberg wasn't done
chastising the man who criticized him. “He is under arrest,” Newberg
yelled at the other officers, “For what? For what? What am I under
arrest for?” you hear Dotson ask, “Just go to jail and take your charge
like a man…Take your charge!” Newberg fired back.“What am I going to
jail for?” Dotson again asked. “Because you don't know how to act!”
yelled Newberg. Dotson was charged with disorderly and sent to central
booking. Once this video was seen by prosecutors, the charge was
dropped. Commissioner Michael Harrison called it part of a horrible
culture and is interested to see how pervasive it is in the department.
Newberg has since been charged with misconduct, false imprisonment and
assault; he is suspended without pay. The younger officer is suspended
with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not
to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think
with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has
assigned.
Proud people compare themselves to others and feel superior if they are able to do something others cannot do.
In 1 Corinthians 15:10, the apostle Paul wrote, But by grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) o God I am what I am (AMPC). If you do not realize you are what you are by the grace of God, you will think more highly of yourself than you should.
You should judge yourself soberly, knowing
that without God you can do nothing of value. Success only comes by His
grace. Your accomplishments and abilities are not yours to take credit
for—they are gifts from a loving Father.
Prayer Starter:
Lord, thank You for Your grace that enables me to do everything. Help
me to always treat others with an attitude of humility. Help me to
constantly lean on You and humbly receive Your help. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
“Give, and it shall be given
unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running
over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye
mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6:38). As believers, we have inside
us the authority to determine what kind of life we have. The more we
give, the more blessings come back to us.

Don't despise the day of small beginnings. God is teaching us to trust,
little by little. He is revealing His plan, little by little.
This is message #697, "Walk In Your Heavenly Father's Shoes", by Victoria Osteen.
We all face situations that look like they'll never change.
In our career, it seems as though we've reached our limits. When we look
at the bank account, it says we're stuck. When we look at the medical
report or a relationship, there's no sign of it improving. The Scripture
says, "The things we see are temporary, but the things that we can't
see are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18). Don't get discouraged by what you
see; it's not permanent. One translation says, "The things we see are
subject to change." Your health may not be good, but it's subject to
change. Your dream may seem impossible, but it's subject to change. When
thoughts tell you it's permanent, turn it around and say, "It may look
that way, but it's subject to change." You can't be moved by what you
see; you have to be moved by what you know. God is on the throne. He's
working behind the scenes. What He promised will come to pass.
When a caterpillar is crawling on the ground, I can imagine he looks
up and sees a beautiful butterfly flying through the air and thinks,
"It's not fair. Why can't I fly? I'll always be grounded." When he looks
at his circumstances, there's nothing about them that says he's going
to get off the ground and fly. If an expert examined his body, they
would give him no chance of taking flight. He has no wings. But in its
DNA, the caterpillar has been programmed to develop wings at a certain
time. One day it turns into a beautiful butterfly and soars through the
air.
All your circumstances may look as though you'll never fly. You don't
have the training, the experience, and don't come from the right
family. Thoughts will tell you, "You'll always be grounded. You'll
always struggle in your finances and be addicted." No, get ready. Your
wings are coming. Where you are is not permanent. God didn't create you
in His own image, breathe life into you, crown you with favor, so you
would crawl and go through life struggling. He created you to soar, to
set new standards, to take new ground, to go further than you've
imagined.
Now quit being discouraged by what you see. It's subject to change.
You don't know what God is doing behind the scenes. You may have been
grounded, but I have good news. Your caterpillar days are over. I
believe and declare that your wings are coming. God is about to take you
higher. You're going to accomplish more than you thought
possible—acceleration, new levels, breakthroughs, the fullness of your
destiny, in Jesus' Name.
