Beast Sports-SKIP THE VENDING MACHINE WITH THESE HEALTHY SNACK OPTIONS

Skip The Vending Machine With These Healthy Snack Options
Team Beast writer Matt Weik gives you the lowdown on some healthy snack options to keep you from straying on your diet, and to keep you away from the vending machine.
Whether you're at school or the office, the midday munchies can hit the best of us. When your stomach starts growling and rumbling, most will sprint to the nearest vending machine to make a purchase. Unfortunately, almost everything found in those vending machines is unhealthy and something that does not align with your health and fitness goals. For that reason, I’ve compiled a list of healthy snack options you should always plan to have on hand when those situations arise.
  1. Nuts or Seeds
Healthy fats and protein… who doesn’t love it? Nuts and seeds are one of the best healthy snack options to keep with you at work or school. Grab a handful to eat and you’re good to go. Anything from almonds, cashews, peanuts, pistachios, Brazilian nuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds are all amazing choices. If you can, reach for the “unsalted” or the “lightly salted” varieties.
One tip I’d like to share is to only purchase those items if they are able to be resealed. The last thing you want to do is open a bag and not be able to close and store it. Buy your nuts or seeds in bags that seal or in jars that come with a lid. This will allow you to keep those healthy snack options in the drawer of your desk or backpack for easy and convenient transport.
  1. Beef Jerky
If you eat meat, it’s hard to pass up delicious beef jerky. Whether you get a variety that is seasoned/flavored or the original, you can always count on beef jerky to be on a list of healthy snack options. The packaging hardly takes up any space and you’ll have a protein-packed snack at the ready whenever you need it.
Again, as mentioned above, your best bet is to purchase your beef jerky in a resealable bag. If you go the route of buying one without, just make sure you have a Ziploc bag handy so you can dump the remaining beef jerky into it for safe storage.
  1. Protein or Nutrition Bars
I see protein bars and nutrition bars being used interchangeably when there is actually a clear difference between them. Nutrition bars tend to be a little on the lighter side when looking at calories as well as macronutrients. Protein bars on the other hand, while they can be lower in calories, will be higher in overall protein content. Most nutrition bars will be anywhere from 8-15g of protein while protein bars will be no less than 20g of protein per serving.
With the vast flavors available on the market, choose a bar that suits your caloric and macro needs while being a flavor you’ll enjoy. Protein and nutrition bars are easily transported and convenient to toss in a bag or briefcase (and completely disappear in a desk drawer due to their small size). These are definitely healthy snack options you should consider utilizing.
  1. Nut Butter
Every time I tell people how awesome nut butters are as healthy snack options, I can’t stop thinking of the little jingle, “Peanut… Peanut butter (and jelly).” This is the life I live with a 4-year old in the house. Getting back on track, peanut butter, almond butter, any nut butter you can think of, is a fantastic snack option. Sure, you could take a spoonful of it on its own (or use your finger, I won’t judge), but what I like to do is combine it with a fruit or vegetable.
Take some of your favorite nut butter and put it on things such as an apple, celery, a banana, or whatever (healthy) food item you decide to put it on and use that as a snack between meals when your cravings kick in. The fat from the nut butter will help you feel satiated and should get you through until your next meal.
  1. Trail Mix
Pre-made trail mix can be a lifesaver when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth in the middle of the day. When 3 pm comes around and the craving hits you like a ton of bricks, it’s all you can think about. Rather than grabbing that candy bar from the vending machine, a simple solution is trail mix. Trail mix is one of those healthy snack options you can purchase already prepared at the grocery store. But what I like to do is make my own so I can control my macros by only putting in the items I want.
If you want to make your own, here are a few ideas to consider: Grab a sealable bag or jar with a lid. Gather your favorite nuts, seeds, and dried fruit, and add some of each to your bag/jar. If you want to add some additional goodies for a flavorful explosion in your mouth, consider adding in a little dark chocolate, granola, or even some air-popped popcorn. Seal everything up, give it a good shake to mix the contents, and you’re good to go.
  1. Protein Shakes
When it comes to convenient healthy snack options, it doesn’t get much easier than protein shakes. Grab your favorite protein powder (hopefully it’s Beast Protein) and leave the tub in your office with a shaker bottle. If that’s not an option due to space, use a Ziploc bag or container with a lid to store a few servings of protein in (make sure you have the scoop in there as well if you are storing multiple servings). You can even pack an individual serving of protein powder in a shaker bottle each morning and toss it in your bag or briefcase. Then, all you need to do is add water when you’re ready for your mid-afternoon shake and you’re good to go.
Side note: be sure to rinse out your shaker when you are done with it. Otherwise, it can start to smell before you get the chance to wash it at home (if you’ve ever left a shaker in a hot car you know exactly what I’m talking about).

In my last two videos I addressed the flaws in the latest low-carb vs. high-carb diet study, and then to further illustrate my point I showed you my recent blood test results, which prompted many of you to ask for an example of what I eat in a day.

I put together a video showing one day’s worth of whole food, plant-based meals for me. It’s about 65% carbs, 25% fat, 10% protein. (The majority of fat I eat comes from nuts and seeds. I’m very active and I have a high metabolism. The extra fat calories help me maintain weight.) Enjoy!
Forgot to mention in the video that I use a Berkey Water Filter.

Organic Superfood/Greens Powders I like
LUNCHA variation on my Coconut Berry Smoothie with these additions
DINNERSweet Potato Black Bean Quinoa Quesadillas
Serves 2. Takes about 45 minutes to prepare. We have this a few times per month.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup cooked quinoa (1/2 cup uncooked)
  • 1 medium sweet potato, cubed
  • olive oil, for roasting the potato
  • 1 poblano pepper
  • a few big handfuls of arugula or baby salad greens
  • a few big pinches of sea salt
  • a handful of chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 cup organic black beans, cooked and rinsed
  • 1/2 teaspoon each, chile powder, cumin, and paprika
  • 4 organic whole grain (Ezekiel 4:9), organic whole wheat flour, or organic corn tortillas
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 lime
Dressing
  • 1/4 c organic cold-pressed olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
  • a drizzle of honey or maple syrup
  • a pinch of salt & a few cracks of pepper
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread sweet potato cubes on a baking sheet and lightly drizzle with olive oil and a few pinches of sea salt. Place the poblano pepper (whole) on the same baking sheet. Roast for 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are golden brown, and the pepper’s skin has started to blacken in spots.
  2. Meanwhile, whisk all dressing ingredients together and set aside.
  3. Remove the roasting sheet from the oven. When the poblano is cool to the touch, remove the ribbing and seeds and chop into 1/2 inch pieces. (or, optional: leave it in the oven until it’s blistered so you can peel the skin before you chop it).
  4. Toss everything together with the dressing. Taste and add more dressing and a few pinches of sea salt, if needed.
  5. Mix quinoa together with roasted sweet potatoes, a little olive oil, sea salt, and additional spices to taste. Add black beans and additional spices to taste.
  6. Place tortilla in a small skillet over medium heat. Add filling. Fold tortilla in half and press down with the back of a spatula to crisp it up.
  7. Flip and cook for a few more minutes. Remove from heat, slice, and serve with whatever garnishes you like (avocado, cilantro and lime).
This is a variation of a recipe Micah found at loveandlemons.com

The suspect wrecked out on Hosea Dolphus Sr. Ave. about two blocks from where the officer terminated the pursuit. He then shot at a witness who tried to make him stop as he fled the scene on foot. The witness had a CHL and returned fire on the suspect. The witness was not hit and we do not believe the suspect was hit either. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Department at 936-633-0356. #thanksfortheblinkerbuddy Dash Cam camera video released by the Lufkin Police Department captures a high-speed chase on Friday night. “The vehicle pulled to the side of the road as if it was going to stop, and about the time the officer was going to get out of his vehicle the suspect vehicle pulled away,” said Jessica Pebsworth, Lufkin Police Department Public Information Officer. That’s when the suspect vehicle accelerated speeds well over 100 mph and continued northbound on Loop 287 and then took a left onto Sayers Street. The officer pursued until the supervisor called off the pursuit due to it being in a residential neighborhood. “Whenever a pursuit happens there really is a case by case basis, there is different factors depending on the time of day, the weather, the area, if a pursuit does run into a residential area we usually terminate due to safety for the community,” said Pebsworth. Roughly two blocks away from where the pursuit was terminated the suspect vehicle crashed out on Hosea Dolphus Senior Avenue, hitting a witness vehicle. “The suspect fled on foot, a witness yelled at him to come back and actually ran after him and the suspect then turned and fired off a round at the witness and the witnessed fired back a shot at him in self-defense and the witnessed did a have a concealed handgun licensed,’ said Pebsworth. The Lufkin Police Department says other witnesses have been assisting in the incident. “There were a lot of people that witnessed this incident, the traffic incident and the shooting back and forth and so people have been cooperative, and we are just following up on those leads,” said Pebsworth. The Lufkin Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact their office. 🚨♦Disclaimer🚨: This video is NOT intended to be violent or glorify violence in any way. Wait Patiently

Adapted from the resource James: The Biblical Commentary - by Joyce MeyerJames starts his epistle writing about patience, and here in the last chapter he writes about patience again. Patience is not just the ability to wait; it is the ability to keep a good attitude while we are waiting.
Patience is a fruit of the Spirit that can only be developed under trial. That is the reason God permits us to go through times of testing and difficulty instead of delivering us from them as quickly as we would like. God always has a plan for our deliverance, but He wants us to grow and stretch so we will be stronger when we come out of the trial.
Isaiah 40:31 is a well-known verse about waiting on the Lord: But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] will gain new strength and renew their power; they will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun]; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not grow tired (AMP).
This verse teaches us that waiting on God is expecting, looking for, and hoping in Him. It is spending time with Him in His Word and in His presence. We do not worry while we wait on God; we do not get frustrated while we wait on God; we do not get upset while we wait on God. We rest in faith believing God will do what needs to be done for us at the right time.
Learning to wait with patience and hopeful expectation is a mark of spiritual maturity. When we find ourselves having to wait on something, we can patiently take a seat in Him and rest in God’s presence. The promise of God’s peace is not made to those who work and struggle in their own strength but to those who rest in Christ Jesus. As we wait on Him, our strength is renewed.
Prayer Starter: Father, help me to wait well—with patience and hopeful expectation. Help me to use the challenging times in life as opportunities to grow closer to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
