Mike Brown’s Round Lake, NY, coffee roasting business hit the jackpot last year when it won the Intuit Quickbooks Small Business Big Game contest. The prize: free advertising during the 2016 (Played Feb. 2017) Super Bowl. We reported back then on the astounding response Death Wish Coffee got to its ad – including 40,000 mailing list subscribers overnight and millions of YouTube views.

Now, six months later, Brown reports that “things are still rolling pretty well.”

Since this time last year, his staff has doubled, revenues are up 500 percent, and he’s in talks with Sam’s Club and Safeway to take his supercaffeinated brand national. “Because of the exposure, we had grocery stores locally and nationally reach out to us,” Brown says.

The ad spot also spurred other small businesses in New York to suggest partnerships. Through one of those, Death Wish has its name on a forthcoming nitrogenized cold coffee, brewed and canned by Olde Saratoga Brewing Company. Brown says the new product will give his business “the opportunity to compete against energy drinks on the market" while going beyond cafes and its own website to reach customers at gas stations and via Amazon.

A collaboration with the Albany Distilling Company resulted in coffee-flavored Death Wish Vodka, and Brown’s coffee beans are also showing up in a line of Death Wish exfoliating soap, scrub, and body cream from Rad Soap Company in Cohoes, NY.  

On September 1, Brown and his team will consolidate four small warehouses into one huge new location with new equipment and machines to handle the increased demand. He says vendors and partners are helping him scale the business.

He’s also working hard to keep tabs on all the growth. Brown says he speaks several times weekly with his accountant and is “finally at a point in the business where my financial reports are excellent.” It helps that his business won a lifetime subscription to Intuit’s Quickbooks platform as part of the Big Game contest. “Before the commercial ran, there were a lot of question marks,” he says. “I wasn’t sure if I should purchase or finance new equipment. Now I have all the data I need fill in those variables and make smarter decisions and be confident that I won’t put my business in a poor position.”

Perhaps the simplest takeaway from Death Wish Coffee’s experience in the past year: Compete for challenges like Intuit’s contest. You’ve got to be in it to win it.

African American Women's Olympic Firsts

The first two African American females to qualify for the Olympics were Louise Stokes and Tydie Pickett. Louise Stokes and Tydie Pickett were trained at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama after Tuskegee organized one of the nation's first female track and field teams in 1929 and campaigned for the inclusion of its black athletes in the Olympic Games, starting with the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932. Although, Stokes and Pickett qualified by defeating other members of their team, U.S. Olympic officials replaced Stokes and Pickett at the last minute with white team members they had previously defeated. Again, in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, U.S. Olympic officials replaced Stokes and Pickett at the last minute with white team members they had defeated in qualifying races. U.S. politics, Jim Crow laws and racist policies played as significant a role as foreign influences in both the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. In 1936, some observers blamed the German government for forcing a change in the line-up of the U.S. women's track and field team because of the German leadership's attitude toward non-Aryans. This included their own athlete, Gretel Bergmann, a 20-year-old high jumper from Stuttgart, Germany. The nation’s official sports club, the German Track and Field Association, barred Bergmann and other Jews from its membership and controlled all athletic activities in the nation, following government policy regulating which members of its population would participate in the Olympics. This policy against non-Aryans may have caused the Americans to remove Louise Stokes and Tydie Pickett from the line-up. Disallowing Jews, living in Germany, from competing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics ignited worldwide protests of the Berlin Games; more than 10,000 gathered at Madison Square Garden in New York to protest. In the end, though, Ireland was the only country in the world to officially boycott the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The United States was represented in Berlin by an Olympic team that included Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals in track and field wearing German-made athletic shoes. The Olympic Games were cancelled in 1940 and 1944 because of the world's involvement in World War II. The next Games were held in 1948 in London, in which African American female track and field stars: Audrey Patterson of Tennessee State won a bronze medal for the 200-meter dash (the first time the 200-meter race was included for females); and Alice Coachman of Tuskegee Institute won a gold medal for the high jump (the first gold medal won by an African American woman). Since 1948, African American female Olympians have been winning gold medals, making Olympic history and showing the world who they are.

John LevraFormer defense line coach for the Buffalo Bills

John Levra retired from coaching after serving for 44 years in the profession. He finished his career as the defense line coach for the Buffalo Bills (five years). He served in the same position with the Minnesota Vikings for three years. For two years at the Denver Broncos, he was the offensive line coach. Prior to that experience, he coached the defensive line for the Chicago Bears for seven years. His first NFL position was as the running backs coach for the New Orleans Saints (five years). In 1980, he was the defensive line coach for the British Columbia Lions of the CFL. In his 15 years as a defensive line coach, his units averaged 46 sacks a season. John spent seven years as a high school coach in Kansas before his college coaching career began at New Mexico Highlands as an assistant in 1966. He then became the Cowboys’ head coach (1967–70) and posted the best coaching record (35-4-1) in school history. He was named the athletic director and head football coach at Stephen F. Austin University in 1971, where he established the second-best winning percentage in the school’s history. In 1974, he moved to the University of Kansas, where he served as the Jayhawk’s offensive coordinator for four seasons. He then accepted the same position at North Texas State for one season (1979). John is a graduate of Pittsburg (KS) State, where he earned All-Central Intercollegiate Conference honors as a guard/linebacker. John is widely respected as one of the most outstanding “teachers” in the coaching profession. He is a much sought-after clinic speaker and has produced three best-selling instructional videos: Pass Rush Fundamentals and Techniques, Pass Rush Games and Stunts, and Pass Rush Drills.

PERHAPS THE ULTIMATE RAPE ESCAPE - GRIP IT & RIP IT In 1992, a burglar tried to rape a sleeping, middle-aged nurse, Curtescine Lloyd, in Edwards, Mississippi. He punched and threatened to kill her unless she submitted to rape. Instead, she grabbed his penis with one hand, his testicles with the other and wrenched them in opposite directions. He screamed and pummeled her some more but she refused to let go. They struggled until she shoved him outdoors half naked. In 2001, a woman walked into Chicago’s police headquarters holding a pair of testicles she'd bitten off an attacker. Abi Grant awakened with a burglar on top of her, threatening to kill her, and punching her face. She punched back. She thought she was going to be killed. When he put his tongue in her mouth, she bit it hard and grabbed his penis and dug in her nails. When he tired of hitting her, she used his penis for leverage and managed to head-butt him. He fled. Even when erect, a penis is merely soft tissue that's attached to a man's body only by weak, blood-engorged, spongy tissue, skin, nerves, and blood vessels – not by bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon, or anything at all sturdy. The same goes for the testicles and scrotum. Thus, a man's genitalia are extremely vulnerable. A rapist's genitalia is within reach of the (unbound) victim – either from behind or in front – and many martial artists claim that it can be easily torn off his body. However, a lack of volunteers to test this theory forces it to remain part of martial arts’ lore. Yet, if you think about it, this very same lack of volunteers makes it blatantly obvious that it's far too dangerous for anyone in his right mind to try finding out – even a failed attempt could maim. So it's a safe bet that a woman ferociously wrenching a rapist's genitalia like wringing out a washcloth – even one-handed – will seize absolute control of the encounter. With the utmost irony, his fragile tool of crime suddenly becomes his undoing – truly poetic justice. TAKING A BITE OUT OF CRIME Or, if you're forced to perform fellatio, his penis or testicles can easily be bitten off. Either biting off or tearing off his genitalia will cause a rapist to suffer severe pain, blood loss, reactive shock, and panic. In all likelihood, he'll frantically scramble to get away from you – especially if you keep furiously attacking him until you suddenly flee – and the police will easily find him when he desperately seeks attention at a hospital. If he tries to kiss you, bite into his lips until your teeth meet – chomp down as hard as possible – then vigorously shake your head side-to-side to cause maximal damage. Then immediately attack him furiously to ensure your escape. While calmly reading this, you may feel that maiming a rapist is too gruesome an act for you. That, of course, is your decision – though you'll likely feel very differently during an actual attack. Yet you still have a very powerful option: grabbing his genitalia with a crushing grip and holding on until you can maneuver him into a situation from which you can safely escape – as did Curtescine Lloyd in Rape-Escape-Options

I was seriously abused throughout my childhood. My life was horrible! I don’t remember ever being really happy until I was in my twenties. My mind was a mess, my emotions were a mess...everything was a mess!

But thank God, I didn’t stay that way! God has dealt with me, changed me and brought me through it all. Now I have a great relationship with God, real peace and joy, good relationships with family and friends, and I’m doing what God has called me to do.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us that God rewards those who diligently seek Him. I’ve discovered that anything I sacrificed to get closer to God and obey Him, I received back from Him many times over. And what He gave me was always much better.

You may be thinking, But Joyce, you don’t know what I’m dealing with. It’s so hard!

I understand—I’ve been through some really hard stuff, too. But God will reward those who seek Him. Be determined to seek Him in the midst of your hardship. He is more than able to clean up your messes!

Prayer Starter: God, I believe You can clean up my messes. Instead of staying stuck in my troubles, I earnestly seek You today and expect You to do something good in me.
